My New Best Friend
I met a new friend today. I must say that he was great. He had smooth, pale skin and black hair with a tinge of blue that almost covering his eyes, which by the way was icy blue. Those eyes of his sent out a most penetrating look. I could feel him see right through all my pretences and into my soul.
Upon our meeting, I greeted him with a half smile, and he returned it. It was rather funny how he seemed to understand me right away. He also gave me the impression that he knows exactly what I wanted to say.
He listened to my problems. I told him how much those pesky cheerleaders' screams disrupt my thoughts and how much they annoy me. I told him how much my school work is suffering due to all the attention devoted to basketball practice. I also told him how much my parents pressure me.
I unloaded all my miseries upon him, and yet his icy exterior never changed, except for the tiny glimmer of understanding shown in his cobalt eyes. It seemed that he had been there too. I sighed. We talked a little. More like I talked.
Then, I talked about my dreams. Our aim is one and the same. We dream to be the number one basketball player in Japan, then emerge as the best even in NBA. I could feel my determination swell inside me. When I looked at him, I could see that his face was set and his eyes held a 'I'll be the very best' look. A soft smile grazed my lips.
Never once did I feel judged when I sat there, just opposite of him, under his unwavering gaze. Instead, I feel comfortable. He too seemed relaxed. I felt an aura of acceptance and understanding that he emitted. Honestly, I don't get that from all my ahem admirers at school.
He never once interrupted me when I was speaking. He just sat there, listening very patiently and didn't go away. Neither did he give me any advice because I don't need them and he knows that somehow.
I was very grateful for that. Not much people would sit and listen to me rant about myself. Well, maybe my, umm fans would, but they would never understand. I wanted to show him how much this meant to me.
As I went to hug him, something startled me. I put my arms in front of me and went to pull him nearer for a tight embrace. Then, I realized that my new best friend was nothing but a mirror.
