::Winter Symphony::

He saw an empty bottle was frozen into the snow. Tendrils of ice winding around the green glass. Oddly beautiful.

Buildings of crass brick stood as an ugly background, blurring behind the snowflakes plummeting from the transparent sky. Few windows were lit with a soft, incandescent light from half melted candlesticks.

Ragged children stood in bare feet, the cold setting in their bones. But they smiled. Smiled because they saw the he saw. They saw the way the snow drifted, the way the people seemed to break the wall they usually put up, the frost on thin windowpanes, delicate patterns. They saw beauty.

He walked slowly to a shop front, peering into the dark. Something glittered.

The blue of midnight stretched across the plane above him. Tiny stars scintillating. Wispy branches from cracking trees reached for them, their leaves gone in autumn.

Lady Winter had cast her charm on the city. It's usual ugly replaced with elegance. Ice coated the lakes, beckoning couples to skate, their cheeks rouged from the cold and their eyes alight. Streetlamps flickered with each snowflake that fell upon their flames.

He would sit on a bench in the frosted park and just look at the white trees with a few small birds perched on their branches. An elderly lady had smiled at him once when he had sat next to her. She tossed crumbs of bread to the birds, and they flew to her feet.

Carolers would often pass him by on the street, their voices seemingly belonging to seraphim.

And when he turned to go home, to walk across the stretching bridge, he would remember what he had seen and he would smile.

The others would ask him when he returned, 'Where ya been Spot?'

And he would answer, 'Out walkin' with the most beautiful thing.'

They would laugh, thinking he meant a girl. He would smile, knowing better.

Winter.
