This is a spin off of Jack and the Beanstalk. It is my first story, so I'd

Everyone knows the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Or, at least, everyone thinks they know. But it wasn't Jack that climbed the beanstalk; it was his sister, Jackie. And there weren't any giants, either. Although, to Jackie, they must have seemed gigantic. For, you see, Jackie was a fairy. Contradictory to popular myth and legend, fairies cannot fly. They do have wings, which they can use to hover for a few moments, or to jump big distances (which, for a fairy, would be about a meter). They are about half the size of a bumble bee and are very good climbers. They can also use magic.
Jackie lived in a hole in a maple tree with her mother Josephine and her little brother Jack. Her father had died years ago. They lived in the Kingdom of the Fairies. Her mother was the Sovereign of the Fairies. Their kingdom was, for the most part, peaceful. Until one day, when the Big, Bad Thing happened.

Jackie was doing her chores (watering the flowers and feeding her pet caterpillar, Magi), when, all of a sudden, a terrible cry arose. She ran to see what it was. When she saw it, she stood there, numb with shock. The barrier was gone! For centuries, the fairies had kept their kingdom hidden from prying eyes, using magic to cloak their presence. Something mush have gone wrong.
In the confusion, she managed to find her mother.
"What happened?" she asked.
"It's time I told you the truth," Josephine said. "Our magic has been running low for years. We used to be able to just call the magic with our songs, but now, all of the magic in our land couldn't shield a pebble. The magic has almost run out. Our kingdom is dying.
"The other adult fairies and I can protect the kingdom for a time, but we will need help. You are the only one old enough to take care of yourself out there. I would send an adult, but we'll need everyone we can get to keep our kingdom safe. I need you to find magic or other magical beings to help us. It is our only hope.
"I need you to gather your things as quickly as you can. Make sure to include your sling, you may need it. I'll pack you some food for the journey. I'll make sure your brother doesn't tag along. You'll need to leave at first light tomorrow, so get some rest."
Jackie just stood there, staring blankly into space. Then, she realized that her mother was close to tears. She didn't want to make it any worse for her than it already was. She smiled confidently and said, "I'll do it mom. Don't worry, I'll find some magic for us." Her mother smiled, trying her best to look happy, even though they both knew she wasn't.
