Authors Note: I wondered what happened to Winston when the Tomb Raider Movie came out. This is my explanation. Hope you enjoy it!
Loss
Five years had passed since Lara Croft had been entombed in Horus' tomb, and for five long years had Von Croy searched for her. Finally, Von Croy desperate to find her, came into a small African village. A tall, young woman left one of the huts and smiled in delight as she laid eyes on him. She ran to him and he saw it was none other than his lost student Lara.

Lara stepped through the iron gate towards her mansion. It seemed to be in slight neglect and the evidence of Winston's careful cleaning was missing. Concerned, she looked up at Von Croy who had come to help her settle back in her home. "What happened to Winston?"
Werner sighed and looked down. "Winston was deeply saddened when he thought you had died. He loved you so much…" he trailed off and looked back up at Lara's worried face.
Lara swallowed. "What happened to him?" she asked again.
Werner shook his head. "He suffered a heart attack a short while after you disappeared. We think he died of a broken heart caused from missing you so much."
Lara's eyes teared up and Werner guided her back to the house.
He stayed with her through that hard time, sleeping in the guest room next to her room. Many times in the night, he could her sobbing. Time passed and Lara stopped sobbing openly. Inside though, it was a steady ache. She hired Hillary and Bryce to be her assistants. She grew close to them, but Winston is still thought of as a beloved grandfather.
