Disclaimer: Ryou Bakura and Yami Bakura belong to Yu-Gi-Oh, which I don't own. "Backwards" is taken from the title of an Apartment 26 song.

Author's note: This is a rather short fic. However, it is based on a true experience from my youth.

"Backwards"
By: Aesa Bast

Ryou sat in his room... alone. Once again, his family was off doing their own things - father away and mother and sister shopping. Sigh. Once again, his so-called friends - Yugi, Joey, Tristan, and Tea - had been ignoring him. Double sigh.

"Although, I suppose it is preferable to being picked on and bullied."

He paused.

"And now I'm talking to myself. This is certainly a sign of impending madness. Maybe I should just end it all. I doubt anyone would even notice if I was gone."

He looked around his room slowly. If anyone would realize he was going to kill himself, it would be the spirit of the Millenium Ring. It was nice to be appreciated, even if was only out the convenience of using his body for whatever nefarious deed. No one else was there.

However, nor was there any convenient device laying about to use in his self-destruction. And he did not feel like leaving his room to find some such device either.

"I suppose there is only one way to do this, then," he thought, and proceeded to wrap his hands around his throat to throttle himself to death.

"You know, you can't kill yourself like that."

Ryou looked over towards the door. It was the spirit of the Ring.

"I just can't take it any more. I'm all alone. No one cares about me or ever will. I know it."

The spirit sighed.

"Don't be ridiculous. I'm here."

"You don't care. You just need my body in order to take over the world. You haven't even given me your name."

"Maybe I can't tell you my name."

"Why not?"

"Because..."

"Because?"

The spirit looked out of the window, at the street below. He did not want to appear weak to Ryou by telling the young man that he couldn't remember his own name. He decided to instead change the subject.

"If you were going to kill yourself, why didn't you jump out of the window?"

"I'm afraid of heights."

That explained a lot... like why Ryou hated climbing the tower when he, Tea, and Tristan were sneaking around Pegasus' castle. However, Ryou seemed afraid of many things... maybe he was just timid.

"Would you kill me?"

"Are you serious, Ryou?!"

"Yes... I just can't take any of this anymore. Maybe you could find a new host... someone who would go along with your plans..."

"Do you really want me to kill you?"

"I said, 'yes,' didn't I?"

Strong hands slowly closed around Ryou's throat as spirit and young man looked at each other. Ryou closed his eyes as he began to lose his breath. But it hurt! It hurt so much!

Crying, Ryou struggled to speak out: "Stop! It... hurts! Stop! ... Please!"

The spirit seemed not to hear.

"Stop! Please... stop! Stop!"

The spirit let go and left the room as quietly as he entered, not looking back inside.
