Ancient Past

Chapter 5

Miyu's eyes fluttered open and she leaned up, her eyes landing on the prince's sleeping form. She had been near Atem's side since he'd collapsed yesterday afternoon. Getting up, she walked out onto the balcony into the cool night air, taking a moment to stretch. She took a deep breath then exhaled, having it come out as a deep sigh. A slight gasp escaped her throat as a pair of arms wrapped themselves around her waist.

"Atem?" He kissed her neck softly.

"Yes?" She spun around in his arms, hugging him tight as though he would disappear if she let go.

"Atem, you're okay," her voice became muffled as she buried her face in his shoulder. Atem hugged her back, gently stroking her long blue hair.

"Shhh... It's okay, Miyu. It's okay." He suddenly felt his shoulder become damp as tears sprang from her eyes. He pulled away slightly, looking at her face, her eyes sparkling with droplets of sorrow. "Oh, Miyu, don't cry. I'm right here."

"I-I thought I was going to lose you... I-I..." She broke down again. He leaned forward, bringing his hand beneath her chin and kissing the liquid crystals away.

"Well, it's over now. Please don't cry. I-I don't want to see you upset." She pulled away, turning her back to him and clasping her hands close to her chest.

"Atem, who were those people? Did you know them? What did they want?" He sighed, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"Yes, I knew them. They wanted to take this world for themselves and they were using my father..." he paused. "...and me to do it. They had to be stopped. And I think that's why my father was acting the way he was." She thought over this new information a moment, trying to make sense of it all.

"Oh, yes, your father wanted me to tell you that he went to inform the Pharaoh of Lower Egypt himself. He's meeting him in a town halfway. That way, he'll be home tomorrow," she whispered. Atem was curious as to why his father needed to go himself but decided to not think too much into it. He was still exhausted from the prior events that occured yesterday.

"Hmmm... and he let you stay with me?" She nodded, walking over and leaning on the rail, facing him. Atem also walked over and reached up with one hand and brushed away the tears that were falling. His other arm found its way around her waist again, pulling her closer.

"Please stop crying. I don't like seeing you cry. Where's that smile I found? It looks so much better on you." She gave a small chuckle, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.

"So you're saying I don't look good right now?"

"That's not what I said at all," he said with a frown, knowing she was only being playful. She chuckled again as he smiled at her. "What do you think you are? Funny?"

"Perhaps," she replied.

"Oh, really?" She giggled. "No, really." She looked up at him. "I can't imagine there being anything more beautiful than you." She blushed, looking away to hide her face with her hair.

"Atem, you are embarrassing me." He put his hand under her chin, lifting it. Then he leaned down, capturing her lips with his. When they parted, the blush had grown darker on her face. This brought a smile to his face.

"Bahihic, Miyu."

"Bahihac, Atem."

Morning sunlight poured through, spilling into the young prince's room. Miyu yawned sleepily, looking over to find Atem already awake and watching her. He was propped up on his arm with his head in his hand, a smile on his face as he watched her sleep.

"Morning, habi," he said softly. Her reply was a kiss. They both then got up and realized they had slept in their clothes from yesterday. "I guess we fell right to sleep when we came in," he said as he began stretching.

"I guess."

"So what did you want to do today, habi," he asked, running a hand through his tri-colored hair. She smiled, giving him a playful shrug as she began running her fingers through her own hair to attempt to smooth it out from sleep.

I don't know, hab-" She was interrupted by a scream coming from the city streets just outside. Giving each other a terrified glance, they rushed to the balcony to see all the guards running into the city.

"What's going on."

"Look!" Miyu pointed down farther into the city at smoke that was rising. "Is something on fire?"

"No, that's dust. I think it's a stampede. Someone's cattle probably got loose."

"Oh, I can't see it that well," she said, trying to lean over the rail a bit to try and see better. Atem jumped a bit, grabbing her shoulder and shaking his head to show he didn't want her doing that in fear of her falling over.

"Yeah, well, come on."

"Where are we going?" Miyu asked as she raced after her lover.

"To see if my father returned yet." They hurried to find the throne room completely empty of guards and servants. "Strange. There is absolutely no one in here."

"Where did they all go," she murmured, her eyes scanning the area.

"I don't know," Atem mumbled. "Hmm... come on." They searched everywhere, not finding any of the servants at all.

"Did all the guards go? And where are the other dancers?"

"Forget just the dancers... where did everyone go?" the prince asked, a bit of anger in his voice. They wandered into the garden, not seeing a single soul there either. "Well, that's it. We've searched everywhere." Atem rubbed his forehead, showing he was gaining a headache. He was then snapped out of his thoughts as a sharp scream pierced the silence. He turned to see that cloaked figure had come up behind Miyu and stabbed her through her stomach! "NO!" Atem ran over as the attacker made a break for it. However, not wanting to leave Miyu alone, he didn't follow. "Miyu..." Tears swelled in his eyes as he sank to his knees by her side. She was now on her knees holding her stomach, doubled over, using her other arm for support. She seemed to be holding her breath as if it was painful to do so now. He started to help her up. "Here, let me help y-" He froze as she cried out.

"Atem..." She leaned on him, tears streaming down her face. In one smooth motion, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her inside, stiffening every time she whimpered.

"Please, Miyu, stay awake."

"I-I'll try, Atem." He soon found himself in his room where he placed her on his bed. "Atem..." He looked over the wound, seeing his sheets already soaking in the blood that oozed from it. He could feel his heart straining at the sight of the crimson liquid, feeling helpless as she laid before him in pain. Bringing a hand to his head, his eyes raked over her still form, trying to think of what he needed to do.

"Shhh... everything is going to be fine. I just need you to stay awake," he pleaded. He took her hand in his as he collapsed to his knees beside the bed, squeezing it gently to give her a sort of comfort. He didn't know what to do.

"But it's so hard. I'm so dizzy," she mumbled, her eyes fluttering.

"That's from the blood loss. Just stay awake." He looked around to find something that could help when he heard a noise out in the hall. "Huh?"

"Atem, what's wrong..."

"I think there is someone here. You stay awake. I'm going to get them so they can help, okay." She nodded wearily. Then as he went to go, she clutched his hand.

"What if it's him? The... one who j-just stabbed me, Atem. I don't... want you getting hurt." She had been wincing as she spoke. Atem could see the fear and worry in her eyes.

"It's not him. Don't worry. I saw him leave."

"Atem.." she protested, her voice sounding weaker.

"Shh..." He leaned up onto his feet, "you're more important right now." He ran out to hurry back. "Hello! Is somebody there?" He heard the noise again. This time further down the hall. Atem followed, stopping dead in his tracks as he heard Miyu scream again. "No," he whispered, spinning around. Rushing in, Atem immediately went to Miyu's side only to now find a deep wound in her chest. "No..." He knelt down, taking her hand. "No..." Tears found their way down his face as he cried. He quieted down as he felt thin fingers fiddle with his hair. He looked up to find Miyu using her other hand to play with his golden bangs. "Miyu.." She gave a slight cough, blood coming up to the corner of her mouth. He got up and walked around, quickly laying down next to her, gently wrapping his arms around her, not caring that he was being soaked with her blood.

"At...em..."

"Shh... don't talk...save your strength.." He knew she was dying and that there was no way he could fix this. All he could do now was comfort her. "I'll always love you," he whispered. She nodded slightly as he kissed her forehead.

"Habi, Nut is coming. It's getting dark." He cried, remembering the night he told her about that. She suddenly began breathing a bit harder as if it was more difficult, her small frame shaking. "Don't cry, habi. I'll... always be... here." She slowly moved to place her fingertip against his chest. As soon as she, she slowly closed her eyes and stopped breathing, never to open them again.

"I can't help crying for you," he whispered, bringing her hand up to kiss it. He laid there for awhile, just staring at her still form, crying. Suddenly, he heard something behind him. Turning onto his back, Atem felt someone clamp their hand over his mouth. Of course, as a reflex, he tried to pry it off. It was then he felt a blinding pain in his chest as he tried to scream. Looking up, he couldn't see the face of his attacker but his cloak darkened his face. Atem suddenly felt weaker as his life slipped through his fingers and into this mysterious person's clutches. His executioner lifted his hand, knowing Atem was now too weak to scream. He turned and walked out, wiping the blood off his dagger. "Help..." Atem's voice come out low and raspy. Gasping for air, he looked over at Miyu. "I guess I'll see you soon." He reached over and took her hand, entwining his fingers with her as he slowly faded into a world of darkness.

"Atem. Atem." The ruby-eyed male awoke to hearing his name, his vision blurred. As he came into focus he realized that he no longer felt any of the pain he was suffering form before and his clothing was clean and repaired. He instantly looked around as his sight cleared, realizing he was no longer in his bedroom and Miyu was nowhere to be found.

"What?" He looked around to find a dark haired, dark eyed girl looking at him. She was wearing a long white gown with long sleeves to which ended halfway down her hands. Upon her head was a gold band going across her forehead and large golden earrings the shape of triangles as though she were wearing the great pyramids. She seemed to give off this faint silvery light to her, making Atem feel somewhat safe. "What happened? Where am I?"

"You died, Atem. Remember?" He looked up at her, feeling empty and alone. He swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat, finding his voice once again.

"Who are you?" he asked, beginning to feel anger swelling within him.

"I am the goddess, Isis. Wife of Osiris. I have come to reward you," she replied calmly. She watched his eyes go wide, a look of surprise gracing his features. He took a step back, his brow creasing in annoyance.

"Reward me? What can you possibly do for me now?"

"I'm giving you another chance at life," came the reply. He backed away a bit more, shaking his head.

"What? I don't want to go back. Not without her...," he murmured, his gaze falling to the ground. He chest felt heavy, bringing his hand up to place it over his heart. In the corner of his eye he could see her shake her head, her dark hair fluttering behind her with the motion.

"No, not that life. Atem, for saving the world from destruction I am going to seal your soul away."

"In what?"

"In this," she replied as she held up her hand. The Millennium Puzzle floated just over her palm as if a force was holding it up. It slowly turned in the air, the light from her presence causing it to shimmer slightly. "Once your soul is inside it will shatter and be stored away."

"Some second chance," he mumbled as he rubbed his arm, turning away from her completely. She chuckled, moving her hand upward a bit to hang the puzzle in the air without her hand to hold it. It continued to float beside her even as she moved to get closer to the prince.

"No, when someone finishes the puzzle, you will awaken but, Atem, whoever finishes this you must protect because it is said that the one who completes it will have an affect on the world like you did," she said. He scoffed, shaking his head before turning to his side to give her a glance.

"And the circle starts again. That's just great. So someone is going to suffer when they finish that." He gave a frustrated sigh. "Fine, whatever, I guess I don't have a choice."

"Atem..." she murmured, feeling as though this was torturing him instead. Isis shook her head. "Oh, there's something I want you to see."

"Hm?"

"You have been dead for hours now and well, your father came home..." She waved her arm, the black ground opening up similar to the portal that the twins were trying to use to get into his world. Below them, Atem saw his father hugging his son's dead body, crying. The bed was drenched with red, the sight making Atem queasy. On the other side of the bed he could see Miyu, her form frozen the way he remembered it before fading from consciousness. Her hand was still outstretched a bit from when she had reached out to him, her eyes still closed. Though he knew she was dead, if not for the blood and tattered clothing he would have thought she was merely asleep.

"W-why are you showing me this?" he whispered so low he almost did not hear himself.

"So you know that it was Hikari and Kage's fault for his behavior and that he did love you." Atem shivered at seeing himself dead, bringing his arms up to hug himself. A gasp escaped his lips as he realized Isis was suddenly standing right in front of him. She pressed her fingertips to his forehead. "Now sleep and rest, Atem. You deserve it..." He eyes felt heavy, his ruby orbs closing once more.

~5000 years later~

"Wow, I finally finished the puzzle," said the young boy named Yugi. Suddenly the puzzle emitted a bright light, causing the youth to shield his eyes. When it died down, Yugi saw what looked like a slightly older version of himself. This 'older version' looked around at his new surroundings until his crimson eyes fell upon the small violet-eyed teen. "W-who are you?" The newcomer paused a moment at the question, feeling a pain as he tried to recall his own name. He memories were fuzzy, his mind drawing a complete blank.

~Yami.~ The word entered his mind, his head feeling a release of pressure. It was then that knowledge of the language the youth before him was using entered his mind, his gaze finally refocusing on the child before him.

"A friend. Please do not be afraid. Namae wa Yami desu. O-namae wa nan desu ka?"

"Ore wa Yugi desu," the teen replied, still unsure what it was that was going on. Yami bowed slightly, bringing his arm across his torso as he bent over.

"Yoroshiku onegaishimasu, Yugi-kun." The young boy smiled. "I've been sent to protect you, watashi no hikari. I am your darkness..."

A/N:

Atem: One question... who killed us *quickly points to Miyu and himself*

Hotaru: Well, actually, I'm going to let the readers guess, though there are few to point fingers at. Well, you can guess if you want but I still need to write an alternate ending/the beginning of 'Vampire Blood' so you'll find out then.

Till then, reviews are greatly, greatly appreciated and thank you for taking the time to read.

Ja ne,
