"Mom!" an 8 year old Mirella screeched walking into the kitchen "Mommy, come on!"
"I'm coming!!" Abby yelled back
Moments later Abby walked into the kitchen being followed by her 4 year old son, Cameron.
"Mama, look at what I drew!" Cameron said pointing to the drawing of an elephant on the refrigerator with one hand, and hold in his mother's hand with the other.
"Good job!" Abby said, sitting on the stool at the counter.
Mirella stood in the doorway impatiently.
"Hun, we've still got a little while before you have to leave."
"But mommy, this is my first day! We've gotta be on time!" Mirella said back.
"I know, and we will be. But mommy isn't feeling so good today.."
Mirella looked at her impatiently still and Abby got up, picking up her keys off the counter.
"Mommmmy pick me up!"
"No, sweetie, not right now." Cam pouted all the way out to the car before seeing his favorite dinosaur toy laying in his car seat.
After dropping off her anxious daughter at school, she drove back home.
"Cam go play in your room, moms gunna take a nap."
"Alright" he said skipping up the steps, as Abby fell back onto the black leather couch. She quickly fell asleep. She awoke about a half an hour later by the sound of the phone ringing in her ear. Almost unconsciously, Abby reached over and answered the phone.
"Hello?"
"Abby Carter?" "Yes..who's this?" She said pushing her hair back with her hand and sitting up.
"This is the nurse at West Rye Elementary school..it seems your daughter has not shown up for school this morning..is there a reason?" West Rye is a suburban town right out of Chicago.
"What?! There has to be some mistake! I dropped her off this morning!"
"Well, Mrs. Carter, we've checked several times. There is no sign of Mirella.
"Oh my god..I'm coming down. I saw her go inside this morning!" She said chocking back tears and leaping off the couch.
"Cameron!! Get down here!"
He game down the stairs and into the living room. "I didn't do it!" he said with a confusing look on his face.
She grabbed his hand and raced out the door.
5 minutes later she arrived at the school, little Cameron on her hip. She raced inside and straight into the nurse's office.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yea..where is my daughter!?"
"M'am, please calm down"
"I can't! What do you expect me to do? You can't find my daughter!! I saw her walk into this school this morning, and now you are saying she's not here!"
45 minutes later- At County
"ER" Helah said answering the phone.
The woman on the other end was in total hysterics.
"Hello?"
"Helah?"
"yeah..Abby? Is that you?" "Helah, get me John.." Abby said wiping a tear from her eye.
Helah walked down the hall to curtain 2 where John was stitching up a man's leg.
"Dr.Carter..Abby's on the phone. Sounds like she's really upset."
"Ok Mr. Alfonzario, I'll be right back." He said to the man before racing down to the phone. He knew it was serious because Abby doesn't get upset very easily.
"Abby? What's wrong?"
"Jonh..I'm at the school..they can't find Mirella anywhere! They called the police..they're looking for her" she said again bursting out into tears.
"What? How did this happen?"
"I don't know! I saw her walking right through the doors this morning when I dropped her off! She was so excited..she didn't want to be late."
"Alright, I'm coming right now. I love you." He said hanging up quickly.
"Susan, Tell Kerry I've got a family emergency and I need to leave" John yelled to Susan who was passing by while he ran out the door.
