A New Year, a new start
I've been watching her a lot the past week as I've been taking care of her, the most beautiful and strong woman I know. Helping her through the restless dreams caused by the fever. I knew the flu can make you very sick, but I've never seen it this bad. I talked to Beth, her doctor, she said she'd drop by later. Sitting by her bedside I had plenty of time to think about the past year, a rough year on the both of us.
At the beginning of the year everything went smooth, we solved a lot of cases, even a couple of which we thought we never would. By March things started to change. I had been dating a nice lady for a while and DeeDee just met what seemed to be a nice guy, we went on double dates sometimes. They looked real happy together. Within three weeks I noticed her change, she was snapping at people, acting very agitated and looking very tired. When I asked her if there was anything wrong she almost bit my head of. The thing that worried me the most was that I wasn't allowed to touch her like I used to, she would avoid me. This went on for a month or two when I found out by accident what was actually going on. I came by her house one evening to bring her something and she and her boyfriend were having a huge fight. I looked through the window and saw him beat her. Well you know me; I broke the door down and went straight for the guy knocking his lights out. He was put away for a long time. DeeDee was taking it hard; she just couldn't believe this happened to her. That she didn't put a stop to it sooner, I felt awful too for not noticing. I took on the job of helping her get through which cost me my relationship, but I didn't mind my love for DeeDee was growing already.
She got through and by July she moved in with me, the only person she felt save with she said. A lot of people weren't surprised to see us get together, not even Charlie. It did mean he had to break us up as partners, we didn't mind. I asked her to be my wife and she accepted, we were supposed to be married early September. Three days before the event I got shot at a drug bust, two rounds in the chest, it was touch and go. DeeDee never left my side the first week. Charlie told me they just couldn't persuade her to go home for some food let alone sleep, we both made it. After four weeks they let me out.
Now I can only look forward to the New Year, a new beginning. The year in which we will be married, start a family and just make each other happy. She's so beautiful when she's asleep, I think her fever broke.
