*Summary* When Rafe comes back to Pearl without Danny, Evelyn vows to find him.
*A/N* This is an alternate ending story. Danny doesnt die but is taken prisoner and hopefully is alive in China.

Rafe McCawley was sitting on the Chinese plane flying back to Pearl Harbor. He kept thinking of all he had lost in the last couple of weeks. After the attack at Pearl, and seeing Evelyn with Danny, he thought his life was over. Then finding out that Evelyn was pregnant with Danny's child was the breaking point. Now, Danny was gone, who knew if he would survive the Japanese prison? What would he tell Evelyn? Should he tell her that Danny was dead? Or that he might be alive?
All these thoughts swam around in his head. If only he could have saved Danny, things might be different. But there was nothing that he could do now. He was on his way to face Evelyn, and Danny was with the Japs.

Evelyn Johnson waited patiently with the other people at the airstrip, awaiting the return of the boys on the Doolittle Raid. She could hardly fight down the feeling of nausea that had consumed her body. She was sick with worry about Danny and Rafe. She loved Danny with all her heart. Now, carrying his child, there was nothing that could break that love. But how could she forget the months she had with Rafe? She thought her life was over when she thought Rafe was dead, but somehow, Danny comforted her, and they fell in love. She couldnt help but think what would happen if Danny didnt return. But the mere thought of it made her eyes well up with tears.
Suddenly, the roar of planes was heard over the murmer of the crowd. An eerie silence fell over the group as everyone held their breaths for the return of their loved ones. It seemed to take forever for the planes to land, but when they did, a feeling of fear surged through the group. The door was opened and out stepped the first pilot. A shout of joy from an estatic wife broke the silence. This continued until the pilots gradually slowed, when crying could be heard. With each soldier, Evelyn's heart sank some. Finally, out of the plane stepped Rafe. Evelyn's heart jumped with momentary hope. But something about the look on Rafe's face made her believe that Danny wasn't behind him.
Rafe walked over to Evelyn with tears in his eyes. The lump in his throat kept him from talking, but his actions said enough. Evelyn, looking like she was going to fall, grasped for Rafe. He pulled her into his arms and held her there. Evelyn's body was racked by sobs that made Rafe's heart break. When Evelyn finally opened her eyes to look at Rafe, she smiled at the way he was so concerned about her.
"Ev, i'm so sorry." Rafe whispered. "But he's not dead. He's a prisoner. There still is hope. Everything will be alright."
Evelyn looked into his dark eyes with the faint realization that things wont be okay.
