Friendship of an Elf
~As told by Gimli the Dwarf~
Disclaimer: I own nothing mentioned in this story, only the actual words of the characters. Some of this goes back to the movie, some of it to the book.
Summary: Simple- Gimli reflects on his unlikely friendship with Legolas.
Author's note: No, this isn't slash, and it doesn't deviate from the original story. It's just a point of view. Enjoy!

Well, it's not like I ever planned on it.
Ha. Had you come to me a year earlier, I'd tell you all elves were unpleasent sorts, and worse, not in the least trustworthy. Who'd want to trust something of importance to one of the laughing, prancing folks? Ha. That's what I would have said. Oh, and I'm still not sure about some of them. And most of them aren't so sure about me, I'll warrant.
The first day I met Legolas, was in Rivendell, a nice place, but I couldn't appreciate it. Not with all the elves watching me like hawks, no lad. There was this elf fellow, very sure of himself, very proud. Well, there's nothing as sets me off quite like a proud elf. We got ourselves into a fair argument, which involved most of the folks in Elrond's secret council. There was a dispute, you see, about the Great Ring. It had to be destroyed, that much was plain. But I, for I was awfully proud myself, refused to allow an elf to carry the ring. Yes, I put my foot down.
Legolas, that was his name, of course, these days, I can't imagine hating the lad. Neither dwarf nor elf ended up carrying the Great Ring. However, me and this Legolas, we ended up traveling together. Agh, those first few days were tough. Ho ho, I suppose all the days were tough until Moria. I swear, Gandalf may have come out alright in the end, but I'll never forgive myself for going in there. Thing is, that's where this Legolas saved my life, though he almost killed my beard. That was a hard time for us all, but I began to understand the elves a little more, as well as Legolas himself. Before I knew it, I ended up laughing with him, and sharing his horse.
"A strange picture we must make. A horse of men, on it a nimble elf, steadying a stocky dwarf!" I thought to myself. We rode across the countryside of Rohan, me with these thoughts in my head, and Legolas with something in his elvish mind, I can't begin to guess what. Then we met up with old Gandalf again, looking more wonderful than ever. He brought news from Galadriel, the beautiful elf queen, oh well, but no words can do her justice. To Aragorn and to Legolas she brought warnings- to me, words of comfort. I was glad of her words, but worried for my friends. This was my first surprise. Since when had I cared as much about Legolas as I did about Aragorn?
Ha. Since then, pretty much. I hadn't realized the friendship that had developed between Legolas and I until then. Oh I still laugh about what a strange picture the two of us made. A dwarf and an elf, laughing, riding together? Ha! My old self would have despised me! Oh, it's a strange thought, knowing you've changed, but not noticing it. At least not until it's too late! Well, it's not like I ever planned on it! Hoho. But I am glad it happened!
