Her eyes wandered from her lesson to the window, where rain was falling
madly, and she feared that thunder and lightening were soon to come. She
stared at the sidewalk, as the younger children walked home with their
mothers and fathers, and their bright assortment of umbrellas looked dull
through the cascading rain.
I could be an umbrella, she thought, somewhat bitterly. She was sure there was something special about her, something more than what she was now. Just what was she anyway? Nothing really special. Just your normal everyday high school girl. She studied hard, she had good friends, and secret crushes. Nothing about Kagome Higurashi was abnormal.
She hated that.
Her life was...boring. She grinned happily, wondering if she could ever be like the heroines in those shoujo mangas. After a whole day of rain and schoolwork, nothing sounded more exciting then some foreign adventure. She knew though, that she'd get home, clean her room, do her homework, eat dinner, then go to bed, just like every night.
When school was finally over, she walked out, in automatic, barely even noticing how the rain had stopped. The bright sunlight in her face did nothing to draw her away from the dreamland she was in. In fact, she probably would have walked right into the oncoming traffic if not for a tug on the back of her blouse.
She snapped out of her thoughts and saw Rhanea, an older, goth looking girl, smirking at her.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?! Pay attention to what you're doing, stupid girl!" she said, staring down at her.
Kagome blinked, obviously confused, and just as she was about to open her mouth to ask what this girl's problem was, she continued.
"I mean, you almost walked right into the street! Were you even thinking? Who do you think you are?"
Kagome sighed, and said, "Just another girl."
Rhanea rolled her eyes and said, "Obviously not, if you think you can walk across busy streets without getting hurt. Take care of yourself, you're worth more than you think."
She watched the girl walk off, and this time, Kagome paid attention to the traffic laws, and crossed the street unharmed, but the moment her foot touched the curb she started to fall back into her fantasy. Before she knew it, she was home, and was greeted by her younger brother.
"Hey, Kagome, any chance you can get the cat out of the well?"
She sighed her consent and bounded into the ancient shrine...
Funny how beliefs can change so quickly.
