The Dramatic Return
small sobs and sniffles, sound of a door opening and closing and footsteps down what sounds like
an empty hallway.
silence.
"You're back?"
"Yes."
"Where did you go?"
"Nowhere."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Oh." sniff
"Have you been" gestures toward him "Like this since I left?"
silence
"Doctor?"
silence
"Doctor? Have you-"
"Yes, okay?! Yes, I have! Since you left I've been sitting here curled into and interestingly
shaped ball and crying at myself, alright?! Are you happy?"
sigh "I can't be 'happy', 'happy' is a feeling and as a Vulcan-"
"Half Vulcan."
pause "Half Vulcan, that is correct." pause "Why were you crying?"
"I... I was lonely."
raise eyebrow "Lonely?"
"And... and, well..." takes a deep breath "I thought you had left for good and I missed you
and... and..."
"You were crying because I left?"
"Yes."
"That... that..." pauses, regains composure "That isn't logical."
"I believe we've been over this?"
"Correct. Doctor, why were you crying? I understand that you were upset that I left, but other
than that?"
"WHy do you have to pry so much?"
"Pry?"
"Never mind."
"Answer the question, please."
"Well, you understand that you are physically dead, right?"
"Yes."
"And you understand that when I get rid of you, and you go do whatever it is that katra's do on
Vulcan, I'll never be able to talk to you again, right?"
"Yes."
"And I thought you left. Permanently."
"I see... you realize of course that I can't leave permanently, yes?"
"No. I don't know anything about this katra transporting stuff."
"I understandnow." pause "Why is my presence so important?"
"You are taking up space in here. You're a tenant."
"Tenant?"
"Tenant."
"I see."
silence
"Well, Doctor-"
"Haven't I told you not to call me that?"
"Why didn't you say something earlier?"
"I was bordering hysteria earlier, Spock."
"Oh yes, of course. Dr. McCoy."
"Better."
"What happens when you fall asleep?"
"My subconsious takes over and I am free to wander."
"I'll have to wait for you to sleep before I leave then. I would not want to cause any distress."
"That would be..." pause "Nice."
"Nice?"
"Nice."
"Nice."
"Yes."
"I see..." pause "How long until you go to sleep?"
"I am a bit drowsy."
"Yes."
"I have a question."
"Yes?"
"Do you hate me?"
"Vulcans do not hate. They mildly dislike, they oppose, but they do not hate."
"Then, do you mislike me? Do you mildly oppose me?"
"No."
smile "Good to know."
"Yes." pause "Go to sleep."
giggles and salutes "Yes, sir."
A/N: Okay, I'm sorry it's been so long since I wrote this and actually posted it. I blame it on
my computer. The modem fell out. But here it is. Are you happy?
