It's Complicated

It was like they were kids all over again. You know those tree house gangs? With the secret meetings and the 'no boys!' sign and the coveted secret password. Except back then the password was something goofy like 'green macaroni dogs' or 'fluffy pink poka-dot hat'. Now the password was 'it's complicated' and cooties were the least of their worries.

She and Spike were the only members in their special 'super powers unite, super duper love life tragedy' club. He wanted her, she didn't know where he belonged in her life. He got a soul and went insane. She got a super baddie and a super ass kicking. Oh, and can't forget the clincher - he was a vampire, she was the vampire slayer.

Match made in heaven, no?

It's complicated..

He was egotistical only to cover his softness. She used him because she hated herself. He engaged her in degrading sex becuase he loved her. She wanted everything from him. He would give anything. She was all take, only take. He gave until he could give no more.

No one understood and it made her feel so old to be here trying to explain it to these slayers in waiting. They knew nothing. She didn't even know where to begin to explain it. It was primal and it was urgent and it was beyond all reason and beyond love. It was a connection of the deepest.

He was the one that could have killed her. She was the one that owned him entirely. They were the only ones who understood each other. The light, the dark. The power. They never had to hold back.

There were levels of understanding. Even now with these baby slayers she felt it, glanced over their heads and shared a look with Xander. That was one level, the one she shared with the Scoobies. They were her loyal followers. She glanced up the stairs and smiled softly to Dawn in reassurance. That was another level, her own blood. But he was above all that, they didn't need stolen glances or silly teenage touches, they could feel one another.

They were on their own plane, above all else, practically speaking another language.

It's complicated, but it's real. It was what she needed to get her through. The connection made her strong, she wasn't alone. Love could wait, but the connection she would never deny.

It's complicated, and it would get more complicated as the days wore on, but together they would make it. They would pull strength from the compassion and understanding only they could have for one another and in the end they would both stand strong.

A/N: Just a little ditty before I go to bed. Not sure where it came from..it's just, I've always been intrigued by the Spuffy 'ship specifically for the reason that their whole relationship is so paradoxical and yet so right on ALL the levels..they are a perfect match.
