"Where's Jace?" Alec demanded. Isabelle shrugged in response. Alec turned to Church, but the cat just licked his paw and dragged it over his ear. Goddammit. "Does no one know where Jace is?"
"Did you ask Hodge?" Isabelle asked.
Alec nodded. "Yeah. He doesn't know where Jace is either." He growled, pain starting to form under his head. "Goddammit Jace!"
"I'm sure he's fine," Isabelle offered.
Alec shot her a look. "Fine, Izzy? I swear, if he comes back and has to spend time in the infirmary…" He let out an angry hiss.
"What are you so worked up about, anyway?" Isabelle questioned, coming to stand beside her brother.
"He just…" Alec struggled for words. "He keeps doing this, alright? Just keeps running off and getting himself injured. He's reckless. He should have brought me along! We're parabatai! I could have protected him!"
"Jace is a good Shadowhunter," Isabelle said, her voice reassuring. "He can handle himself."
"He thinks he can, at least," Alec muttered.
"Alec, come on," Isabelle said, but before she could say more, the elevator began making sounds. Alec whipped towards it, hopeful, and Jace soon came out, covered in blood.
"Jace!" Alec called out, running towards him. "Are you okay?"
Jace looked up at him, wiping blood away from one of his eyes. "I'm fine. It's not my blood."
Taking a second look at his parabatai, Alec realized that it was, in fact, demon blood. Flushing a little in embarrassment, he pulled back. Isabelle came up to Jace as well at that moment. "Come on, Jace. You should get to the infirmary."
Jace raised his eyebrows. "Like I told Alec, it's not my blood."
"And how do I know you aren't lying?" Isabelle countered. "You'd definitely lie that way. Makes you seem tougher or something. Come on." Isabelle began to guide Jace to the infirmary, Church trotting after them. Alec began to follow, but Isabelle said, "You can come later, Alec."
Alec gaped at her. "What?"
"I want a moment between just Jace and I," Isabelle said. "I want to talk to him calmly before you go in with your foul temper."
"Church is going with you!" Alec protested.
Isabelle glanced at the cat, who rubbed against her legs. "He's different. He's a cat."
And then, the three of them left, leaving Alec alone.
When Isabelle found Alec again, in his room, he was angrily punching the wall. "Alec…"
Immediately Alec whipped towards Isabelle. "Jace. Is he okay?" Isabelle nodded, and Alec sagged down onto his bed in relief. "Thank god."
"He's still exhausted, so he'll have to stay in the infirmary for a bit," Isabelle explained. "But otherwise, he's doing fine."
"I was so worried…" Alec began, his voice faltering.
"I know," Isabelle murmured, sitting down next to him and taking one of his bruised hands in hers. "I know."
Alec was content to sit there in silence for a while, and it seemed that Isabelle followed his lead with that. They just sat there, thinking about Jace.
Alec was definitely going to visit him soon.
