Sometime after January 28th, 2010, Light's victory against Near.
Teru was now one of Light's bodyguards. He was upset he can no longer be in the role of the executioner for Kira, but he knew his job was not to question, but to do as his god wishes. However, he still had unanswered questions that made it uncomfortable for him to sleep at night, he resolved he must get answers.
On one afternoon, when Teru was able to get Light alone, he opened up about these concerns. Teru tells Light about the relationship he had with his mother, Tokie. Light was able to gather that Teru was close to her, but he did not know what to say or advise him because Light himself was never close to his own mother.
"God...why didn't my mommy believe in justice?"
"...You're a grown man and you still call your mother, 'mommy?'" Light responds in surprise. And he goes on to say, "How would I know? I never met her."
"How can you NOT know her!? You created her!", Teru says, while he grabs Light's shoulders in desperation.
"Are you crazy?" Light asks, somewhat taken back by Teru's passion, unsure of how to proceed, he thinks, I always thought he was kind of weird, but he can be more of a serious nut job than I first anticipated.
To Light's reaction, disappointment and realization crept up on Teru, as he began to understand Kira is, in fact, not a god. He knew his god will never leave him on a cliffhanger like this!
His hands on Light's shoulders, made their way around Light's neck and Teru began to strangle him. In absolute fury, Teru declares, "You're not god! What the hell is this? Look what you've gotten me into! You're no god, you're just...scum."
With all of his strength, Teru squeezes Light's neck until his face turned blue and Light was no more...
He throws Light's corpse to the side and angrily whispers, "Delete," to himself.
A few minutes later, Misa Amane enters the room, which does not improve Teru Mikami's mood in the least.
Upon seeing Light's dead body Misa screams and hugs Light. She looks up to Teru and yells, "YOU did this! How could you?!"
Misa runs up to him and begins to throw punches at Teru's chest.
Teru, snapping out of his daze, yells back at her, "And you're no goddess! You...you slut! You yellow nightmare!"
With ease, Teru wraps his hands around Misa's neck and begins to strangle her as well.
But before he could do any damage, from the realm beyond the humans, the 500th Shinigami who was created to fall in love with and die for Misa wrote Teru's name down into his death note. This Shinigami was never given a name because his sole purpose is for the aforementioned reason above. Teru Mikami dies because Misa must survive, no matter what. Every last living being must drop dead before anything could happen to Misa.
