Chapter 3
INT. BEAU'S BEDROOM – NIGHT
CLOSE ON BEAU'S DREAMCATCHER as a FEMALE'S HAND moves into frame, turns it. INCLUDE THE FEMALE'S BACK as she moves around the room, touching his stuff. Picking things up, curious, setting them down just a little out of place. It's creepy.
Finally, her hand falls on a RED T-SHIRT draped over a rocking chair. As she brings it to her nose, we SEE HER FACE - IT'S RILEY! Pale white, chiselled features, eyes BLOOD RED. A vampire.
She inhales Beau's scent then stuffs it into her jacket and exits his room. We FOLLOW HER DOWN THE STAIRS and into -
INT. BEAU'S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM (CONTINUOUS) – NIGHT
Riley soundlessly enters to find Charlie asleep on the couch. He's in uniform, a case file spread out, some of it resting on his chest. Riley leans over him, SEES a PHOTO of herself (it's her case file), and a newspaper article.
INSERT NEWSPAPER – SERIAL MURDERS RISE IN SEATTLE
OFF RILEY, intrigued, taking in the news and her own file, and Charlie who's unaware of the danger just inches away…
Riley stares casually at Charlie's holster. Silently, uncannily smoothly, removes his gun. Stares right down the barrel. Yep. There's a bullet.
Riley points the gun at Charlie's head. Smiles. This could be fun. How far can she pull the trigger without it going off? She squeezes – the hammer goes back -
Then Riley notices the picture on Charlie's chest… her smiling, human self. Reaches out to it.
INT. BEAU'S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – NIGHT
Beau comes in the front door. The living room is empty and quiet. Eerily so. Suddenly -
CHARLIE (O.S.)
You know, Edythe could at least respect meal times.
Beau turns, startled. Charlie leans in the kitchen doorway, indicating his watch.
BEAU
I was with Julie, actually.
CHARLIE
(pleased)
Oh. Good.
There's a KNOCK on the door. Charlie knows who it is, heads back into the kitchen with a small, self-satisfied smile.
CHARLIE
I'll just give you two some privacy.
Beau girds himself. Then opens the door to find Edythe.
EDYTHE
Do you have any idea how worried I've been?
BEAU
- I was perfectly safe -
EDYTHE
- I nearly broke the treaty to make sure -
Abruptly she stops. Inhales. Her face alarmed.
BEAU
I get it, I smell like a dog -
EDYTHE
- No, something's wrong -
She moves into the living room. DARTS throughout the first floor, checking it. Charlie doesn't see… he's concentrating on the photo of Riley, whose FACE has been SCRATCHED OUT.
BEAU
What? What is it?
EDYTHE
Stay here.
And she bolts upstairs. He hurries after her -
INT. BEAU'S ROOM (CONTINUOUS) – NIGHT
- Beau enters to find Edythe holding the dreamcatcher.
BEAU
Edythe. What's wrong?
EDYTHE
(grim)
Someone's been in here.
INT. CULLEN HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – NIGHT
Edythe paces, frustrated. Archie is stressed. Beau tries to track their fast-paced conversation with Carine, Royal, and Earnest.
EDYTHE
No, Archie - It was a stranger. I didn't recognize her scent.
(beat)
That's not helpful, Royal.
BEAU
Would you mind… speaking out loud?
EDYTHE
Sorry.
EARNEST
A nomad passing through? -
ROYAL
- A passer-by wouldn't have left Beau's father alive.
Beau chilled by the thought. Earnest puts a comforting hand on his shoulder just as the door bursts open. Jessamine enters.
JESSAMINE
Her scent disappeared about five miles south of Beau's house.
EDYTHE
Someone's orchestrating this -
CARINE
- Victor -
EDYTHE
- No, it has to be the Volturi -
BEAU
- Checking to see if I've changed?
ARCHIE
- I don't think it's the Volturi either. I've been watching Sulpicia's decisions.
ELEANOR
We gotta find whoever this is and get some answers from them.
CARINE
We'll also need to take shifts guarding Beau at his house -
ROYAL
- Another protection detail? -
EARNEST
- Royal -
BEAU
- No, he's right. You can't protect me, watch my Dad, and search for the intruder -
ROYAL
- And for Victor -
BEAU
- And keep yourselves fed. All your eyes are black -
EDYTHE
- I'm not gonna leave you defenceless -
BEAU
- Well I'm not about let you starve.
He stops… a beat. An idea occurring. He looks at her, a tiny glimmer of optimism flashing on his face.
EDYTHE
(wary)
… What are you thinking?
BEAU
A way to ensure I won't be unprotected and so you all can hunt.
EXT. BEAU'S HOUSE – FRONT YARD - DAY
Edythe stands at the curb, frozen in place, waiting, eyes unblinkingly watching the front door. Finally, it opens, Beau exits. Behind him, Julie.
Edythe meets them halfway. Edythe is calm, calculating; Julie is hotheaded, fractious.
JULIE
Whoever it was left her stink behind. It'll be hard to miss when we cross it again.
(to Edythe)
We'll handle it from here.
EDYTHE
We don't need you or your dogs to "handle" anything. Or anyone.
Julie steps towards Edythe who doesn't move.
JULIE
I could care less about what you need -
Beau moves between them.
BEAU
(wary)
Okay, so we'll all work together. – We all have the same goal, right? Catch the bad vampires -
JULIE
Like there's a distinction.
EDYTHE
That's it, we're done here -
JULIE
- No, you're done -
Beau tries to keep them apart; it's like trying to stop boulders.
BEAU
- Stop! Enough!
Julie simmers. Edythe just looks at her.
BEAU
I'm tired of this. I'm tired of you both fighting. From now I'm Switzerland, okay?
Julie starts to speak -
BEAU
Look, I don't expect you two to become friends, or even like each other. But we have more important problems, and this is just one temporary solution.
(then)
Can you both at least try to get along?
(beat)
For my sake at least.
A long, tense beat. Finally, Edythe nods. Then Julie.
BEAU
Alright, so you need to coordinate. Schedules and anything else.
Neither says anything. Beau sighs. Turns to Julie -
BEAU
Would the pack prefer days or nights?
JULIE
(beat)
Nights.
BEAU
(to Edythe)
Will days work for your family?
(off Edythe's nod)
Good. See? That wasn't so hard.
Agonizing. Off Beau, determined to make this truce work.
BEAU'S POV – EXT. BEAU'S HOUSE – NIGHT
FROM ABOVE, looking down at the dark, silent forest beyond the yard. Stillness. Suddenly, we SEE a movement in the trees. THEN TWO GLEAMING EYES peer out, belonging to… a WOLF skulking at the edge of the treeline. It looks up at -
INT. BEAU'S BEDROOM – ON BEAU (CONTINUOUS) – NIGHT
- he stands in the window, looking down at his protector. Then, in contrast to the danger that surrounds him -
ALLEN (O.S.)
U.W. sent me and Erica our dorm assignments yesterday…
Beau turns to the room where Allen sits on the floor, a massive stack of graduation announcements in the "done" pile. Allen is blithely unaware of Beau's situation.
ALLEN
I'm in the furthest dorm from campus. Erica's in the closest, of course. Has Alaska assigned you and Edythe dorms yet?
Beau looks at him, missing him already. He sits next to Allen, takes up a card to address.
BEAU
Not yet.
ALLEN
Where is Edythe tonight anyway?
BEAU
Out looking for trouble.
Allen hears the worry in Beau's voice. Looks at him.
ALLEN
Is something wrong?
BEAU
No, why?
ALLEN
One, Edythe's always with you. Two, you keep looking out that window like you're hoping she'll show up any second now.
BEAU
Allen, what if Erica was like, secretly a member of this… volent gang, and… your sister was in this other gang, and they wanted to kill each other, and you couldn't tell anybody?
Beau's slightly odd remark just kind of sits there.
ALLEN
It's fine. You don't have to talk about it.
BEAU
There's nothing to…
(beat)
I mean, there is but…
How can he talk about it? Beau debates, then straightens himself, choosing his words carefully.
BEAU
Okay. You remember Julie Black?
ALLEN
Ah. Edythe's jealous.
BEAU
(surprised)
You say that like it's so obvious.
ALLEN
(apologetic)
It's not?
BEAU
Edythe just thinks Julie's dangerous or something… a bad influence on me.
Allen smiles. Shakes his head.
BEAU
It's… more complicated than that.
ALLEN
Say it with me Beau: Jealously.
BEAU
I've told Julie how I feel. She accepts it. She'd… rather be best friends than nothing.
ALLEN
Okay, so the word is really: Denial.
BEAU
You're calling me an idiot.
ALLEN
It's a little obvious.
BEAU
Well, I don't want this. Every move, every decision I make hurts someone.
ALLEN
They're both strong, independent woman. They make their own choices.
(beat, then)
Don't worry, it'll work itself out. It's not life or death or anything.
Off Beau, glancing back at his window, at his reality…
EXT. BEAU'S HOUSE – ON THE WOLF – SAME
- off the wolf's EYES, eerily refracting the light…
EXT. ROAD – DAY
Edythe's silver Volvo pulls over to the side of the road. Beau and Edythe emerge from the car. They SEE – 30 YARDS DOWN THE ROAD, Julie wearing nothing but a tight black tank top and short cut jean shorts, leaning against her red Volkswagen Rabbit. Waiting. The two girls exchange a tense look.
EDYTHE
Doesn't she know how to dress with a bit of modesty?
Beau looks at Edythe a beat, realizing -
BEAU
Allen is a wise man.
EDYTHE
What does Allen have to do with - ?
BEAU
It's nothing. You can head off. I'm good here.
Which doesn't make her feel better. She pulls him closer.
EDYTHE
I hate being away from you.
BEAU
Don't rush. You need to hunt.
Then she surprises him with a particularly passionate kiss. DOWN THE ROAD Julie scowls. Edythe pulls away, leaving Beau a little dizzy.
BEAU
Well - feel free to rush a little.
She smiles. He offers a reassuring look, then walks off.
ANGLE ON JULIE - As Beau reaches her, she smiles broadly -
JULIE
Hey, handsome.
She pulls him into a big HUG. He HEARS Edythe's care PEEL out; she's obviously pissed. As he watches the Volvo disappear, Julie opens his door from inside the Rabbit. He takes his seat as -
JULIE
So, what should we do today? Bike, hike, hang? It's your call – but tonight we're going to a party.
Off his curious look and the THUNK of his car door closing -
EXT. LA PUSH BEHIND JULIE'S HOUSE – BONFIRE – NIGHT
A group is gathered around the fire, eating hot dogs, laughing. Bonnie sits at the natural head of the circle. OLD QUIL, Quil's ancient grandmother sits on one side of her, SAUL CLEARWATER on the other. The three Council leaders.
The whole pack is there; Paula, Quil, Emma, Jay and Sam, with Elliot at her side. Lee sullenly stares into the fire. Meanwhile, a young Quileute boy about Quil's age is definitely giving staring at her. She SIGHS, annoyed that in another life she might be able to live the life of a femme fatal.
ACROSS THE SAND – Julie leads Beau toward a roaring fire.
BEAU
You sure this is, okay? I hate to be a party crasher.
JULIE
Technically, you're a Council Meeting crasher. But you're okay. I thought, I mean, they think it'll be good for you to hear the histories.
BEAU
(stops)
Wait, the pack histories? Aren't they… secret?
JULIE
We've all got a role to play. And you're a part of this. It's the first time Quil, Sarah and Lee are hearing them, too. But you're the first outsider. Ever.
BEAU
Oh… I would've dressed better, or brought a gift if I'd known.
Julie laughs.
SARAH (O.S.)
Hey Jules!
They're interrupted by a skinny girl, SARAH, 15, who trots up like a puppy. She clearly idolizes Julie.
SARAH
'Bout time you arrived. Paula's been bogarting the food. But I saved you some burgers.
JULIE
Good looking out, Sis. Beau this is Sarah Clearwater, Lee's sister. Newest member of the pack.
SARAH
Newest, prettiest, brightest -
JULIE
And slowest -
Julie ruffles Sarah's hair, the two start play-fighting. Sarah laughs, absolutely loving this girl. A WHISTLE comes from the circle. It's Sam. Sarah looks back.
SARAH
Come on. Your mom's about to start.
As Sarah drags Julie and Beau towards the bonfire…
BONNIE (O.S.)
The Quileutes have been a small tribe from the beginning…
EXT. LA PUSH BEHIND JULIE'S HOUSE – BONFIRE – NIGHT
ON THE FIRE, burning lower.
BONNIE (O.S.)
… But we've always had magic in our blood.
INCLUDE THE CIRCLE, PANNING everyone's faces, their attention wholly on Bonnie, her voice commanding.
BONNIE
We were great spirit warriors, shape-shifters who could transform into the powerful wolf. This enabled us to scare off our enemies and protect our tribe.
ON BEAU who absorbs the story, its images alive in his mind. Julie glances at him, gauging his reaction as -
BONNIE
One day our warriors came across a creature…
INT. FOREST CLEARING – DAY (1750'S)
TWO QUILEUTE WARRIORS (all in human form) emerge from the trees, horrified to find a FEMALE VAMPIRE (wearing a gown of a mid-1700's Spaniard) bent over two lifeless TRIBE GIRLS. Her eyes are blood-red, feral. A terrifying image.
BONNIE (V.O.)
It looked like a woman, but it was hard like stone and cold as ice…
The two warriors PHASE INTO WOLVES and charge the Vampire.
She grabs one of them, strangling it. The second wolf gets her teeth into the Vampiress neck and tears off its head. But the strangled wolf falls dead to the ground.
BONNIE (V.O.)
Our warriors' sharp teeth finally tore it apart… but only fire would completely destroy it.
EXT. LA PUSH BEHIND JULIE'S HOUSE – BONFIRE – NIGHT
BACK ON BEAU – the horrible visuals alive in his mind. Julie watches him, gratified by his somber reaction.
BONNIE
They lived in fear that the Cold Woman was not alone. They were right.
EXT. QUILEUTE VILLAGE – DAY (1750'S)
A HANDSOME VAMPIRE in a tattered 1700's Spanish suit, moves through the Quileute village of long houses and teepees. A TRAIL OF DEAD BODIES; tribes-people screaming.
BONNIE (V.O.)
He took his vengeance on the village. Our elder chief, Taha Aki, was the only spirit warrior left to save the tribe, after her daughter was killed.
TAHA AKI, 60's – anguished, stands over her dead DAUGHTER, 20. Her THIRD HUSBAND, 40's, screams in agony next to her body. Taha Aki spins toward the Vampire and takes a running LUNGE at him, TRANSFORMING into a great wolf. They CLASH!
THE THIRD HUSBAND watches with horror as the Vampire quickly gets the upper hand.
BONNIE (V.O.)
Taha Aki's Third Husband could see she would lose…
The THIRD HUSBAND looks down at the ruined weapons of the tribe. He knows he cannot fight the Cold Man, as much he wants to.
He pulls out a knife and RUNS towards the VAMPIRE who barely acknowledges the impending attack -
EXT. LA PUSH – BEHIND JUIE'S HOUSE – NIGHT
BACK ON BONNIE, who looks at Beau as she says -
BONNIE
The Third Wife was no magical being, with no special powers but one: courage…
ON BEAU'S FACE as we cut back to –
EXT. QUILEUTE VILLAGE – DAY (1750'S)
The Third Husband charges the Vampire, dagger raised high - but as he nears, shockingly, he plunges the knife into his own heart! BLOOD flowers on his chest. The Vampire catches the scent and spins towards him, ravenous -
BONNIE (V.O.)
The Third Husband distracted the Cold Man long enough for Taha Aki to destroy him. His sacrifice saved the tribe.
As the Taha Aki-wolf leaps onto the Vampire, tearing him apart, The Third Husband lay dying, his expression at peace…
BONNIE (V.O.)
Over time our enemies have disappeared. But one remains – the Cold Ones…
EXT. LA PUSH – BEHIND JULIE'S HOUSE – NIGHT
BACK ON BEAU – emotions conflicting as he sees all this from the wolves point of view. Bonnie continues -
BONNIE
Our magic awakens when they're nearby. And we sense it now, feel the threat in our blood. Something terrible is coming, and we must be ready. All of us.
Off Beau… and the FIRE -
REPORTER (O.S.)
Seattle is in a state of terror…
