Alec was done with Clary fucking Fray and her illegal missions that landed him in trouble. If it weren't for Jace and his insistence on helping Clary, Alec wouldn't involve himself at all.

But now, Clary had yet another illegal mission. Going off to save the life of a downworlder, the new Alpha of the werewolf pack. Alec and Isabelle stayed behind while Simon, Jace, and Clary drove off with Luke to Magnus's place, and soon walked back to the Institute together. Alec stumbled, out of exhaustion from babysitting Clary the whole day, and Isabelle supported him.

"You okay?" Isabelle asked.

Alec huffed. "Not really."

"We're almost there," Isabelle said, and Alec soon found out that she was telling the truth as they entered the Institute. Isabelle half dragged him to his room before helping him to the bed. He immediately fell onto it and passed out.

Isabelle was still with him when he woke up. Alec groaned, pushing the blankets off him. Isabelle must have put them on, he realized vaguely. She's a good sister.

"Alec, are you okay?" Isabelle asked.

"I'm fine, Izzy," Alec muttered.

"You literally passed out," Isabelle pointed out. Alec glared at her for a moment before he was forced to admit she had a point. He sighed and when Isabelle pushed him back into the bed, he let her.

"What's bothering you?" Isabelle asked. "I know stress had to have been a factor in your passing out. It couldn't have just been exhaustion from werewolves."

Alec glared at his sister for a moment, feeling a tad bit annoyed at just how well she knew him, before sighing and saying, "It's Clary. She's the problem."

Isabelle raised her eyebrows. "Oh, I don't know. I quite like her."

"Not the issue here, Izzy," Alec muttered. "It's not that I don't like her. I mean, I don't, but… It's her constant missions. She never even knew we existed until a week ago, and now she's already acting like she owns the place. She keeps doing these dangerous things without thinking about how much trouble others will get in. And Jace…" Alec paused. "Jace keeps going along with her. Why?" The last word was choked out. "Jace and I… we've known each other for years. We're parabatai. Yet he prefers this girl he just met over me?"

"Alec…" Isabelle whispered soothingly.

"I'm sorry Izzy, I'm just…" He gave a hollow laugh. "I've had enough."

"It's understandable," Isabelle replied. "It's true, you're the acting Head of the Institute right now. You'll have to take responsibility for Clary's actions." She must have noticed how he became more tense at that, but she quickly said, "That's why I understand. Maybe Clary does need to relax a bit. And Jace…" She breathed out. "You're not going to like this."

"He's in love with her, isn't he?" Alec muttered.

"Maybe," Isabelle admitted. "That's what it seems like. Who knows, maybe he just relates to her. They've both lost parents after all."

Alec was silent.

"I'm not making this any better, am I," Isabelle muttered, getting up. "Rest for a while, Alec. I swear, if I see you out of your room in the next hour, I am going to drag you back here."

Alec gave a tight smile. "I believe it."

As Isabelle rolled her eyes and left, Alec stared blankly at the wall. Why is this all happening, and so quickly?
