"Do you think your dad is really fine with this?"
Octavia turned to grace her newest friend with a perplexed frown. It's been just two hours since Alan was taken back to their home, and this question sure felt a bit frustrating to consider.
"Of course he is! Daddy was smiling."
And her daddy always smiled when he was fully convinced of something. It was always like that so... why should this case be any different?
"Well, I don't mean to sound rude but... I heard him say that he didn't want your mom to know I am here from one of the butlers."
That reasoning drew two emotions out of the owlette: first, she understood why her daddy said that, knowing that her mommy would just be angry the moment she realized that they went to the human world and... brought a human back home; second, she was further confused by the way Alan translated that as him being somewhat unwanted there. Why would he? He was her friend after all. Her first best friend at that!
"That's because mother is not nice with guests," Via replied quietly. "Or non-demons. Or anyone ever."
"Oh," Alan hummed, looking back at the blocks they were using to build a castle with. "So... what if she learns I am here?"
"You will stay," Octavia answered firmly, sounding a bit possessive about it, but only because it wouldn't be the first time she was robbed of something she wanted.
Puppies, dolls, and even nice-looking pillows. Via would always have to capitulate on those out of the fact that her daddy would tell her there was no other choice. But when it comes to Alan, the feeling was different. He was her friend, he was a living being, and he was someone she didn't want to let go because she cared for him. And she knew he trusted her about remaining.
His family was not nice, they were bullies. That wasn't how parents should behave- even her mother, despite her behavior, wouldn't stoop that low when it comes to her 'misbehaving'. So, there was no way she would let him go, not even if her daddy said there was no choice. Because if there was no choice, then she would make a choice to keep him!
"I see... thanks."
She chirped happily "You're welcome."
Their playtime was soon over as tiredness came to them. Via was not familiar with cuddling with someone close to her age, but she didn't think it was somewhat nicer than how it was with her daddy. Her father was quite slim and 'thin', while Alan was a bit wider but small, making for a nice pillow she could eagerly hug as she slumbered. Much to her glee, the boy returned the favor with a proper hug, thus cementing their budding friendship.
But while the children were napping, the adults were... fighting.
"You brought a WHAT in our house?!"
Stolas' scowl couldn't be hidden for long as the disdain he felt towards that familiar and yet hideous tone was impossible to hold back.
"A human, Stella. And our daughter's first serious friend at that."
"I don't care if he is Octavia's friend or not, you picked a living fleabag and brought him here in this manor- Do you understand how this will cause a massive backlash once it gets out?"
"Only if it is discovered without announcement and... without precautions," The Goetic Prince rebuked, smoothly addressing the matter. "The family can handle a blow to their reputation, especially if it means providing Via with a proper playmate."
"A proper playmate?" Stella scoffed, sounding sarcastic over these words. "There are plenty of young children within our family that-"
"Are not interested in friendship with Via and would like to get out of their closeness with her," Stolas shot back, interrupting his wife and giving her a flat look. "While I was forced by father to marry you, that doesn't mean Octavia is forced on a duty to follow these steps."
That rebuttal gained a horrible expression out of Stella's face, the female owl demon seething visibly before that insulting reminder which left both in a t. 2ense silence for some time.
"So, you are going to keep him? That human pet?"
"For as long as Via will want him, yes. Plus, the family of the boy is quite disastrous and would misbehave in their duties as parents," Stolas hummed, thinking of the report his detective had provided while digging on little Alan's parents.
A bunch of morons, but still holding a potential demonic ancestry due to the analysis made to the child's blood. He may be even more useful to Via if that was indeed the case as he could serve as her bodyguard in the near future. Still, that wasn't something he could announce just yet. Not with Stella being already hostile to the idea of keeping a mere human around.
"Well, what about the shopping trip I planned with our daughter? Should I bring her mutt with us too?"
"Silly Stella, Via doesn't have a dog," The owl demon replied dryly. "In fact, I would be most displeased if Via was brought to tears because her own mother can't handle being civil around her first only friend."
"The family's children-"
"Are not her friends, for fuck's sake!" Stolas snapped, Stella looked surprised, but narrowing her eyes at him.
"Do you understand the others will wage war as soon as a human is announced to be Via's closest friend? They will throw a riot and try to remove you," The woman remarked, drawing nods from her husband. "They will cause issues, Stolas. And it will not just be about reputation at that point. Via could be hurt too."
"Then let them come and I will show them what it means to thread on my patience!" Stolas proclaimed angrily, the thought of any fool trying to hurt his daughter was enough to stir a deep sense of fury from within.
And it was enough to leave Stella pausing and... lessen her protests for a while.
Yet, despite this confidence, Stolas was genuinely worried about this instance- especially when his wife could be the very worst foe in this sort of new game he was playing for their daughter's sake.
