Prologue

As the streetlights came on outside once the sun went down over the treetops a young girl came wandering into her dorm room, groaning a little and stretching before throwing her car keys onto her twin sized bed. There was a separate twin sized bed in case there was ever a new student that needed to stay in the dorms but this year she had been assigned to a room by herself.

The silence was a constant reminder she was away from caring for her brother, Tyler, and leaving him in the hands of their drug addict mom and said drug dealer boyfriend. She wished she could have taken Tyler with her, but she didn't have the money to rent a place for them to be with each other. She was a junior in college, for Christ's sake! She was broke when it came to money, there was no sugar coating this, and she would most likely have to move back home to stay with her mom, mom's horrible boyfriend, and Tyler.

She plopped her brown leather messenger bag onto the twin sized bed she had claimed and went over to where her desk chair was. She sat down and had her head tilt backwards, where she noted she had left her closet open at the last minute today. She had so many grueling exams she had to do the past few days, so it wasn't surprising when she had left the closet door open.

"Ophelia…"

Reaching her hand up, Ophelia rubbed her hands against each of her arms as a cool breeze washed throughout the small dorm room. She leant forward again and turned on the light which was on her desk. She let her hazel eyes flicker away from the light to the slightly frosted window. Her heart stopped for a second when she saw her clothes that were hanging were beginning to be pushed away as though someone was in there. She spun around on her chair while grabbing the scissors in order to protect herself only to notice that there was no one in the closet.

"I'm just exhausted, that's it."

Ophelia stood up and went to where one of the dressers that were set up in the dorm for two roommates. She opened the top drawer to grab a new set of underwear when her phone went off. Frowning, she turned around and went over to where the phone was. She narrowed her eyes when she saw that her mom was calling and contemplated on not answering it but remembered that her brother sometimes called her because he was lonely.

Picking up the phone she pressed the answer button and didn't have time to say anything before the person on the other end did: "Ophelia? Ophelia!"

Tyler, precious Tyler, was on the other end. He was bubbling and calling her name, his voice soaked with tiredness and cracked from crying. Ophelia never wanted anything more than to be there to comfort him and then murder both her mom and her mom's boyfriend in cold blood. She'd make sure that Tyler wouldn't see it, but she'd do it.

Tyler barely was able to say anything to her when someone took the phone away from him and cleared their throat. "Ophelia…I see you do answer your phone."

Ophelia snorted as she rolled her eyes, before she reached into the drawer underneath the top one to pull out some pajamas. "Yes, I do. For Tyler, not for you."

"Watch your tone, Ophelia. I need you to come home. Jimmy overdosed and I need some help taking care of Tyler. Jimmy needs me," her mom told her, enough for Ophelia to drop her clothes onto the bed while she still cradled the phone between her ear and her shoulder.

"At least your boyfriend almost died near Thanksgiving Break, so I won't be missing any school. That shouldn't matter though, I'll be there tomorrow. Let me say–"

Before Ophelia could ask to say goodnight to Tyler, her mom hung up on her end. Ophelia clenched her jaw together before she began to put a bag together of stuff she'd take back home. If she looked at the closet a moment later, she would have seen the outline of a pagan deity, but her attention was focused completely on Tyler. The deity had plenty of time to capture her complete attention.
