Chapter 12: The Sun will Rise Part 1
SCENE: AMBER AND ANDREWS BEDROOM
(Amber and Andrew lie in bed sweaty and post coital. They're both tangled in sheets naked and out of breath)
Amber: (Panting) Oh my god, I think I just had an out of body experience.
Andrew: (Panting) Oh dio, mi hai appena fatto dimenticare come parlare inglese.
Amber: (Sighs) Same, I was afraid we were gonna break the bed.
Andrew: (Chuckles) I think we almost did, that was amazing.
Amber: (Still out of breath) Oh yeah definitely top ten, number 2 is what it was.
Andrew: (Nods) Number one being the elevator of course.
Amber: Oh yeah definitely nothing is gonna top that. I love living together.
Andrew: (Smiles) I love it too.
(Andrew turns his head and kisses Amber)
Amber: (Pulls back) Okay as much as I want another round, I need to shower and go to work so do you.
Andrew: (Holds her hand) Five more minutes come on.
Amber: (Chuckles) Five minutes turns into five hours and you know it. Now let go I need to wash the sweat and sex off me.
(Andrew reluctantly let's go and watches in lust as Amber gets out of bed naked)
Amber: Care to join me?
Andrew: (Exhales) Go ahead I'll catch up I just need to make sure my limbs are working.
(Amber chuckles mischievously before going to the bathroom and closing the door. When he hears the shower running Andrew sits up and goes to his bedside drawer. He pulls out a small black velvet box from the very back of the drawer, opens it and looks at the round diamond on the white gold band)
Amber: (Yells out from the shower) Andrew? Are you coming or do I need to wash all this sex by myself?
Andrew: (Smiles as he still looks at the ring) Coming!
(Andrew closes the box, puts it inside his jeans for the day and runs to the bathroom)
LATER AT THE RESIDENTS LOUNGE
(Amber enters the lounge smiling and sighing in content)
Amber: (High from endorphins) Good morning, everyone! And it is a beautiful morning, isn't it? Did the cake come? I know I am craving something sweet.
(Sam and Casey look at each other in worry. Amber is oblivious humming as she gets into her scrubs)
Sam: (Surprised) You are uncharacteristically chipper this morning.
Amber: (Puts her scrubs on) Well yeah why shouldn't I be? Grey is coming back and the sun is finally rising on this joyous occasion. Is that a new haircut Casey? It is outstanding.
Casey: Okay now I'm officially scared, what's going on? Did you steal amphetamines from the drug cabinet?
Amber: (Chuckles) I guess you could say I got my happy drugs the natural way last night. And this morning.
Taryn: Must have been a good drug.
Amber: (Sighs in lust) That he was, my friend, that he was.
(Andrew walks in with a grin on his face)
Andrew: (Sighs) Morning everybody.
(Sam and Casey look at him in astonishment over getting Amber happy)
Andrew: What?
(Sam and Casey turn around to get ready ignoring Andrew who looks at Amber confused)
Amber: (Grins) Just enjoy the high while it lasts my love.
(Amber kisses Andrew before heading out to get the cake in the lobby)
AN HOUR LATER
(Amber eats cake on the way to cardio when she spots Jo by the station looking at her phone in worry)
Amber: Hey, want some cake?
Jo: (Looks up) What?
Amber: I got cake from Grey's welcome back party; do you want some?
Jo: (Freaking out) Um no thanks, I'm good.
Amber: Are you okay?
(Amelia and Link walk towards them)
Amelia: Jo, do you think that our baby should have my prefrontal cortex or Link's?
Jo: (Still distracted) Sorry what?
Link: Are you okay?
Amber: That's what I just asked her before you guys interrupted.
Jo: Yeah. I uh-I signed up to be a Safe Haven volunteer, which means that, when a baby is dropped off at a fire station in the vicinity, they call me, and…they just called me.
Link: Whoa.
Amber: Oh man.
Bailey: Shepherd.
(Amelia leaves them to catch up with Bailey)
Amber: (Worried about Jo) I-uh I'm sorry but why on earth would you of all people sign up for this?
Jo: My therapist told me about the program.
Link: Which therapist told you to do this?
Jo: Carly. But she didn't tell me to do it. She told me that she did it.
Amber: Okay but just because your therapist did it doesn't mean you have to.
Jo: Well, hearing her story made me feel better and I don't know it just sounded nice helping someone.
Amber: Jo I want to support you on this but I can't help but be worried for you and how it's gonna effect the progress you've made so far.
Link: I agree with her. Are you sure it's not too much too soon?
Jo: Can you both come with me? Alex went to Iowa to help his mom.
Link: His mom? (To Amber) What's wrong with your mom?
Amber: Nothing she's fine she's just moving into a new house in a nicer neighborhood. Alex is going to help her move stuff and calm her down in case she gets worried about her routine.
Jo: So, can both of you go with me or not?
Link: I have a surgery.
Amber: And I'm helping Pierce with a valve replacement. But I can switch with someone.
Link: I can cancel?
Jo: No. No. No. It's-I'm-It's good.
Link: Are you sure?
Amber: It's no problem at all Jo.
Jo: Yeah. No. I'm fine.
(Jo walks away from them)
Amber: (Worried about her) I'll call her before and after the surgery to make sure she's okay.
Link: I'll call while you're in the O.R.
Amber: Great, teamwork.
(Amber and Link high five and each go to their separate tasks. Amber runs off to meet the other residents)
Amber: Hey, did I miss anything?
Sam: Right on time.
(Levi runs over to join them. Amber avoids eye contact with him)
Levi: Ooh, cake.
Casey: (Mad as well as everyone else) None for you, traitor.
Levi: I didn't mean to rat out Grey, and you all know that. I was just doing my job.
Blake: Mm-hmm. That's what the Nazis said.
Levi: Okay, my great-grandfather was in a concentration camp, so that's really not cool to say.
Brody: Apologize to the traitor.
Blake: Sorry, traitor.
Amber: (Fed up) Guys I am swimming in endorphins right now and happy for the first time in weeks so shut up and let me keep swimming.
Maggie: (Arrives at the door) Excuse me. Coming through.
Andrew: (Comes to the front) Excuse me. Look, Grey's back, all right? So, you can all shut up about it now.
Amber: (Grins) Thank you honey.
(They all go inside and to see Elliott on the bed and Finley in a wheelchair)
Meggie: Hi, Elliott. Finley? Wheelchair? What happened?
Elliott and Finley: Jasper happened.
Finley: 4 pounds, 14 ounces.
Maggie: Wow. You had the baby! I thought he wasn't due for another month.
Elliott: Oh, he wasn't.
Finley: No, but he's okay. He's in the NICU. Oh, yeah, show her, show her.
Elliott: (Shows his phone that's recording Jasper in the NICU) Check out this little alien.
Amber: Aww.
Finley: Isn't he cute? We're calling him E.T. for short.
Elliott: Yeah, I was in the middle of my usual pre-surgery fast when her water broke.
Finley: He wanted to postpone, and I was like, 'No. You don't postpone heart surgery.'
Elliott: Yeah. Jasper's immune system's still a little wonky. They're not letting me hold him until I get discharged.
Maggie: She-Karev, present, please.
Amber: Yep, Elliott Calhoun, 39, here for a fourth aortic valve replacement due to congenital aortic stenosis.
LATER ON THE PEDS FLOOR
(Amber and the others stand by and greet Meredith with glee when she comes in)
Meredith: Good morning, good morning.
Taryn: (Smiling) Good morning. Hi.
Meredith: Dr. DeLuca present.
Andrew: Jamie Caldwell 13.
Meredith: (Remembers) Jamie. I know Jamie. I took out your gallbladder two years ago. How are we doing?
Jamie: (On her phone) Zachary just commented on Tessa's photo with a heart emoji. When I'm dying.
Sharon: You're not dying. She's not dying. Right?
Andrew: Jamie presents with a palpable 3 by centimeter mass in between her ribs on her right side, which-
Jamie: Hurts like hell.
Sharon: Language.
Jamie: Can you cut this thing off before Tessa's bat mitzvah? Zachary Schultz isn't gonna dance with a hunchback.
(A man in navy scrubs enters the room confusing all of them)
Hayes: Who's presenting? There a problem?
Andrew: W-We already started.
Meredith: Hi. Who are you?
Hayes: Cormac Hayes, chief of pediatric surgery.
Amber: (Endorphins deflate at this news) W-What?
Meredith: Since when?
Hayes: Since this morning. For the future, let's not round on my patients when I'm not here. Start again.
Andrew: Jamie Caldwell, 13, presents with persistent back pain due to a palpable 3 by centimeter mass in between her ribs on her right side.
Hayes: Jamie do you mind leaning forward so I can have a look?
(Jamie nods and leans forward. Hayes puts his gloves on and feels the mass on Jamie's side)
Hayes: It feels hard almost like a bone. Have we ordered a CT?
Meredith: I was about to, but then I got interrupted.
Hayes: Jamie, I'm gonna get some scans so we can get a better idea of what's causing your pain and the, um-
Jamie: Zit-hump?
Hayes:
Meredith: Right. That. Okay, Parker. Let's get her up to CT.
Hayes: Like I said.
(Hayes walks to leave)
Levi: (To Meredith) Happy first day.
Meredith and Hayes: Thank you.
(Amber purses her lips and leaves the room to go to cardio with Andrew following to check up on her)
Andrew: Before you ask, I didn't know, I found out in the room same as you.
Amber: I know, you had the same look as everyone else.
Andrew: Are you okay?
Amber: (Composed) Yeah why wouldn't I be?
Andrew: Maybe because your brother's job is officially filled in making his firing stick.
Amber: I am fine, I knew that it was only a matter of time before they replace Alex. I just thought they'd replace him with someone from this country.
Andrew: (Eyebrow raised) Do you have a problem with men out of this country? Because you know I was born and raised in Italy, right?
Amber: I do and I find it to be an extra sexy thing about you. What I don't find extra sexy is some stranger walking around like he owns the floor my brother was chief of for 5 years.
Andrew: (Rubs her shoulders as they walk) Okay I know it's strange and it'll take a while to adjust but we will, okay? Just give it time, you might even like the new guy.
Amber: I highly doubt that since he doused my endorphin high the first time I saw him.
Andrew: (Leans in and whispers in her ear) Do you want me to reignite it?
Amber: (Inhales from lust) I want you to but I have a surgery with Pierce. Tonight though and bring your A game.
Andrew: (Grins) Oh, I will, it might even be the new number 2.
Amber: (Grins) I'm holding you to that, I'll see you later.
Andrew: Bye.
(Amber grins and walks away. Andrew goes to OB and steps inside Carina's office relieved to see her there)
Andrew: Hey you got a minute I need your opinion on something.
Carina: Yes, I have a patient in an hour but I'm free until then.
Andrew: Great.
(Andrew closes the door and puts the blinds down for privacy)
Andrew: Okay this is big so I need you to promise me that whatever I say in this room and whatever we talk about stays in this room, okay? Promise me you will not tell anybody not Amber not Jo, nobody.
Carina: Si, is there a problem?
Andrew: (Grins) No it's the opposite in fact.
(Andrew pulls the box out of his coat pocket opens it and puts it on the desk in front of Carina who looks at it confused)
Carina: What is this?
Andrew: It's an engagement ring.
Carina: (Eyes widen in shock) Cosa?
Andrew: (Smiles) I'm finally doing it Carina, I'm gonna propose to Amber Karev.
CUT TO BLACK
SCENE: CARDIO FLOOR
(Amber goes to Elliots room to find Maggie examining him with Finley by his side. Amber is surprised by Teddy being there and annoyed the Levi is there as well)
Amber: Dr. Altman? What are you doing here? I thought that Dr. Pierce was the primary on the case.
Maggie: I am but I thought it couldn't hurt to have an extra set of hands in there, two cardio surgeons are better than one, right?
Amber: (Confused but goes with it) Um okay and why is he here?
Teddy: (Observes the monitor) If the he your referring to is Schmitt, he's on my service today and will join us in the O.R., any problems with that?
Amber: …No problem at all.
(Amber doesn't look at Schmitt who looks away due to guilt)
Teddy: If I've learned anything, it's don't be a hero. Use formula when you need formula.
Finley: Oh, trust me, I'm all over that. Breast is best, but, sometimes, Mommy needs wine.
Maggie: Okay, one more deep breath for me. (Elliot follows) Okay. We're ready to prep you, Elliott.
Finley: Okay. I'm gonna go watch bad TV and eat pudding and ice my lady parts.
Elliott: Ooh-la-la.
Teddy: Enjoy it, 'cause it's gonna be your last alone time for the next 18 years.
Finley: (Chuckles) I don't have to be scared, right?
Elliott: If I die, don't ever leave him with my mother for the weekend.
Finley: (Chuckles) Shut up. And I won't.
Teddy: We're gonna fix you up so you can hold that beautiful boy.
Amber: Don't worry Elliott you're in good hands with Dr. Pierce and Altman, goddess hands in fact.
(Elliott and Finley kiss before they start to prep him)
MEANWHILE AT OB
(Carina sits behind her desk holding the box in her hand observing the ring with Andrew in anxiety over her opinion)
Andrew: What do you think? I wanted to do an emerald cut at first but Amber's style is simple and I figured she would complain about how heavy the diamond is so I got the smallest I could find. I got silver because Amber says that gold is for hookers and pimps so…what do you think? Did I make the right choice?
Carina: It's-It's beautiful, simple yet elegant.
Andrew: (Exhales in relief) Yes that's what I was going for, thank you.
Carina: How will you do it?
Andrew: I'm gonna do it at Canlis, I'll get down on one knee when the waiter brings the champagne. I got us a table with a view of Lake Union, it is absolutely gorgeous it cost me two-weeks overtime but it will be worth it.
Carina: When is this dinner?
Andrew: Next week.
Carina: (Shocked) That soon?
Andrew: Yeah, I've been thinking about doing this since we got back together and I knew that I wanted to marry her after we moved in together.
Carina: Andrea, she told you that she doesn't want to marry ever. She will not change her mind when you propose.
Andrew: Yeah, she said that she doesn't want to get married but afterwards she said that the idea of marriage might be on the table.
Carina: Might be not fully.
Andrew: Even so 'might be' is as good as it gets with her. I mean you know Amber for her to change her mind that much about something she was so sure of shows how much this relationship means to her. I'm hoping that she's changed her mind enough to say yes.
Carina: And if she doesn't?
Andrew: Then I'll wait a few more years and propose to her again.
Carina: Why don't you do that then? Just wait a while before you ask.
Andrew: (Confused) Carina, why are you so against this? I mean I know you don't believe in marriage but I was kind of hoping you would be just a little bit supportive.
Carina: And I want to be it's just…
Andrew: Just what? Tell me.
Carina: (Sighs) Don't you think your being too rash asking her to marry you this soon?
(Andrew looks at Carina surprised by her question)
LATER AT CARDIO
(Amber and Levi roll Elliott out of his room and into the hallway to go to surgery)
Levi: Can we talk? About…what happened?
Amber: (Sighs) Not now Levi.
Levi: Amber, you can't hate me forever.
Amber: Schmitt-
Levi: I know I screwed all of us by getting Meredith Grey fired you especially since your brother was fired too. But I was just trying not to get myself fired.
Amber: Levi please just-
Levi: I made a mistake, and I thought you of all people would understand that.
Amber: Why me of all people?
Levi: Because you mess up too. You're just better at covering your ass than I am.
Amber: (Scoffs) You know what this isn't about what you did, I was an intern too and I maybe, maybe would've done the same thing you did that I get.
Levi: Then why are you still mad at me?
Amber: (Angry) Because you kept this from me for months and I had to find out in court!
Elliott: Hey guys? Uh, if I don't make it through this surgery, I'm gonna be really bummed if this fight of yours is the last thing I hear.
Amber and Levi: Sorry.
(They stay quiet and wait for the elevator)
Elliott: Actually, can we make a stop?
CUT TO THE NICU
(Amber and Levi wheel Elliott to outside the NICU where Finley is with Jasper)
Elliott: (Amazed) Oh, God. Hey. I just wanted to see him before I went under, just in case.
Finley: (Smiles and holds up Jasper mimicking E.T.) Elliott.
(They both mimic E.T.'s finger touch)
Finley: (Laughs) Go get a cow valve already, will you?
Elliott: Moo. I love you guys.
(Elliott nods to Amber and Levi and they wheel him out)
Amber: You two are so cute together, you probably tell each other everything, no lies whatsoever.
Levi: (Knows that's targeted at him) Must be nice.
(They silently wheel Elliott into the elevator to go to the O.R.)
LATER AT OB
(Andrew sits across from Carina at her desk explaining why he isn't being rash and why it isn't too soon to propose)
Andrew: We've known each other for two years now, we've been dating for a year, and we've been living together for months now. Do you want to tell me again that it's too soon?
Carina: I know all of that and I still worry your not thinking this through or properly considering the consequences.
Andrew: The consequences that I've considered is that Amber says yes and we get married or she says no and I still love her anyway. The only reason that you are against this is because you have a different opinion on marriage and think that it's not a celebration of love and commitment.
Carina: And it isn't but that's not why I'm worried your being reckless Andrea.
Andrew: Then why?
Carina: (Gives a look) …You know why.
(Andrew understands what she's saying and leans back taking a deep breath)
Andrew: This has nothing to do with papa.
Carina: Andrea I came to Seattle because you are now the same age he was when he started-
Andrew: (Triggered) I am not him Carina! Do you see me taking more patients than I can handle? Do you see me making false promises to distressed couples?
Carina: No but-
Andrew: Exactly I am not displaying symptoms of mania and if I was me proposing to the woman I love is not one of them. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a surgery to go to.
(Andrew stands up and grabs the velvet box closing it and turns to leave before making a final statement)
Andrew: You know it wasn't much of a shock when Karev basically said no to giving his blessing, I somewhat expected that. I didn't expect this from you.
(Andrew leaves the office and Carina exhales as she leans back)
LATER IN O.R. 4
(Amber and Levi suction and retract as Maggie and Teddy put in the aortic valve)
Maggie: What's the activated clotting time?
Perfusionist: 485 seconds.
Maggie: Thank you.
(They spend the next moment in awkward silence until Levi breaks)
Levi: (Sighs) I'm sorry for not telling you.
Amber: Levi now isn't really the best time and we don't want to distract Dr. Pierce or Altman.
Maggie: (Not paying attention) I'm not listening.
Teddy: Neither am I.
Amber: (Sighs and stays quiet for a moment before responding) Why didn't you tell me from the beginning? Why keep this a secret for so long?
Levi: I don't know I…I guess I was afraid I would lose my best friend if I did.
(Amber snorts in irony)
Levi: But now I see that it was more wrong of me to keep this from you and have you find out in front of everyone. I mean I saw the way that you treated DeLuca after you found out about-
Amber: That was a personal matter, this was professional. Yes, I'm a little mad that you unintentionally got my favorite brother fired but I know you did what any of us would've done in your position. I'm perceptive enough to see that and I thought you of all people would get that after being friends with me for so long.
Levi: (Nods in guilt) I know, I suck.
Amber: This whole thing sucks for both of us Levi. I used to like coming to work, I used to like to talk to you, tell you everything, trust you with stuff I can't tell anyone else. Now it all just sucks because you couldn't do the same thing for me.
Levi: …I am so sorry for making you feel that way, the last thing I wanted to do was make you feel our friendship wasn't important to me because it is. It's probably the only thing that's kept us both sane over the years through the long hours and family problems and issues with our boyfriends, we could still count of each other. I just…somehow forgot about that for a second, I'm sorry.
(Amber looks at Levi slightly touched and suctions)
Levi: Look you can hate me all you want but-
Amber: I don't hate you, Levi.
Levi: (Surprised) You don't?
Amber: No…although I have imagined about 100 different things, I would do to you on this table if I was the only surgeon in the room.
Levi: (Frightened but amused) Really? Which one looked the best?
Amber: Ex vivo surgery.
Levi: (Chuckles) Yeah that would be it.
Amber: With a full penectomy.
Levi: Oof nice touch.
Amber: And the surgical tools haven't been cleaned since the 70's when all the gnarly diseases rose up.
Levi: I mean yeah you want me to be infected as well as having no penis and no major abdominal organs.
(Amber and Levi chuckle for the first time since the hearing)
Levi: (Hopeful) So uh…are we good?
Amber: (Exhales) This is a first step Schmitt.
Levi: I'll take it.
(They continue to work on Elliott together)
AN HOUR LATER
(They're almost finished closing the aorta)
Teddy: Valve's in, and we're almost done closing the aorta.
Maggie: Okay. Okay, good. Good.
Teddy: Nice work, Pierce.
Maggie: Thank you.
Koracick: (From the gallery) Always heard you were even better with hearts than with bloody guts. Didn't believe it could be true, Altman, but you proved me wrong.
Teddy: Thank you, Tom.
(Koracick leaves the gallery)
Maggie: Why don't you just tell him to leave you alone?
Teddy: He's my boss. And I broke his heart, and I feel guilty.
Amber: (Chuckles) Wow. So many lawsuits in that one sentence.
Teddy: He's fine. He's harmless. And we're friends.
Maggie: Does he know that? 'Cause he seems to think that he has a future with you, and you don't seem to be interested in clearing that up. Okay. Clamps off. Let's take the patient off bypass.
Nurse Linda : Dr. Altman, they need you in the pit.
Teddy: You're good to close, yeah?
Maggie: Yes. Thank you for the assist.
(Teddy leaves the O.R.)
Amber: Dr. Pierce? Would it be okay if I close?
(Maggie stays silent and freezes as she looks at the heart)
Amber: Dr. Pierce?
Maggie: (Panicking) Shut up. Shut up. Um…
Levi: Shouldn't his heart be restarting by now?
Maggie: (Freaking out) I don't know why-why it isn't restarting. Why isn't it restarting?
Amber: (Confused) Maggie this is his fourth aortic valve replacement meaning he's been on bypass multiple times it's most like hibernating myocardium which means he needs-
Maggie: (Panting) Shut up, just shut up Karev. Get me the internal paddles now and push one of epi and milrinone.
Amber: (Unsettled) Dr. Pierce?
Maggie: Now Karev!
(Amber grabs the epi and pushes it into the heart as well as the milrinone)
Maggie: Charge to 15, clear!
(Maggie charges the heart but it's still not responding even when Maggie massages the heart)
Maggie: (Frantic) Oh god, oh god no, charge to 20, clear.
(Maggie charges the heart and it still doesn't respond)
Maggie: Another epi and milrinone now.
(Levi does as told looking scared as well as Amber)
Maggie: Charge to 30 now!
Amber: (Tries to calm her down) Maggie wait-
Maggie: (Frantic) Shut up Karev just shut up! I can fix this!
(Amber eyes widen in fear and she turns to Levi out of desperation)
Amber: Get Altman back in here.
Levi: You want me to call her?
Amber: Get out, run as fast as you can and get Altman in here right now.
(Levi nods and runs out leaving Amber with Maggie)
THREE MINUTES LATER
(Amber tries to calm her down gently with no success)
Amber: Maggie if you keep shocking him his heart wall will disintegrate and he'll lose his rhythm all together. You need to stop.
Maggie: (Ignores her) This can't be happening. This can't be happening again!
Amber: Maggie, calm down and think for a second please.
Maggie: Increase the flow on the pump.
Amber: (Shocked) You're just gonna keep him on bypass?
Maggie: Karev, I said shut up.
(Teddy and Levi arrive)
Teddy: What the hell happened? Pierce?
Maggie: His heart didn't restart. I don't know what I did.
Teddy: He's been on bypass multiple times before, right? It's probably hibernating myocardium. Let's keep him up here for a couple hours. It could come back. Pierce, do you agree with my recommendation?
(Maggie massages the heart still rattled)
Teddy: Pierce.
Maggie: Well, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna go out there and tell his wife and newborn that he's dead, so I guess I don't have a choice.
(Maggie leaves the O.R.)
Teddy: Pack the chest, keep him on bypass. I'm gonna scrub in.
(Amber does as told relieved from what just happened)
AN HOUR LATER OUTSIDE THE O.R.
(Amber and Levi go outside shocked by what they just witnessed)
Amber: You saw that too, right? Pierce was rattled and immediately thought the worst ignoring what I said until Dr. Altman said the exact same thing I did, you saw that too?
Levi: Yep, I saw it and I even saw you scared which I didn't think was possible.
Amber: Same.
Levi: What's going on with her?
Amber: I-I-I don't know, all I know is she lost a patient at Pac-North which is awful but obviously there's something else there.
Levi: You don't know what happened?
Amber: No, I was off that day so I didn't assist. God how bad was it?
(Levi shrugs and Amber freezes when they see Hayes walking in their direction)
Amber: Come on turn around.
Levi: Wha-
(Amber turns them around but there's a gurney headed their way trapping them)
Amber: Damn it! Okay keep walking but keep your head down.
Levi: Why?
Amber: Just do it!
(Levi's eyes widen but he does as told walking with her keeping their eyes glued to the floor as they walk by Hayes who notices her)
Hayes: Hello Dr. Karev.
(Amber internally groans and stops. She and Levi reluctantly turn around to greet him)
Amber: Hi Dr. Cormac or Dr. Hayes sorry. Um…hello again.
Hayes: (Smirks) Hello. I just wanted to meet the sister of my predecessor. I hope this isn't going to be awkward and that we can work together in the future.
Amber: Um yeah, yeah, I can do that I can work with you, and uh I don't know why you would think this is awkward. I mean you're the new chief of peds that was previously my brother but uh I've made my peace with that.
Hayes: Right well I've heard nothing but good things.
Amber: About me?
Hayes: Your brother.
Amber: (Eyes widen) Oh yeah right well he was the best.
Hayes: Well, I hope I can fill in his shoes nicely.
Amber: Yeah, well you can try but…
Levi: (Butts in to save her) Hi I'm Levi Schmitt, Dr. Schmitt.
Hayes: (Shakes his hand) Hello.
Amber: Okay um if that is all I have post ops to check so…this isn't awkward don't worry.
(Amber pats Hayes's upper arm making it more awkward before turning around and walking away with Levi)
Levi: You know saying that it isn't awkward made it-
Amber: (Frustrated with herself) I know, shut up.
LATER AT CARDIO
(Amber fills in charts for Pierce before she leaves when Andrew walks up to her)
Andrew: Hey, I heard about the day you had, are you okay?
Amber: Yeah, I'll be fine, hibernating myocardium is expected for people like Elliott. There's a good chance he'll wake up so…what about you? Anything interesting happen to you today?
Andrew: Nope I assisted on a biopsy and an ortho case other than that it was a pretty normal day for me.
Amber: Well at least one of us got that.
Andrew: Hey do you have plans next Friday night?
Amber: Um no I think I'm free that night why?
Andrew: (Grins) Because I got us a reservation at Canlis that night.
Amber: (Surprised) Isn't that place ridiculously expensive?
Andrew: Yep, but don't worry we can split it half and half.
(Amber glares at Andrew over his not considering her getting paid less than him)
Andrew: (Gets the message) Or I can pay, its not a problem at all.
Amber: Why the fancy restaurant at all? I mean you know fancy to me is sitting at a booth at the Dough Zone, it's less expensive and the food isn't smaller than a molecule.
Andrew: Well, I wanted to give you a special date night to celebrate our post one year anniversary.
Amber: (Confused) We had a one-year anniversary?
Andrew: See I'm not the only one that forgot so you can't hold it against me. Our anniversary was on Halloween and-
Amber: We didn't start dating at Halloween.
Andrew: Well, no not technically but we did have our first actual kiss that day and I realized after that that I had to be with you so potato potahto. I felt bad that we didn't celebrate because we were fighting so I made a reservation at a five-star restaurant to make it up to you.
Amber: (Chuckles) You know we could just stay in and order Chinese and blow out a cake to celebrate that's my idea of you making it up to me.
Andrew: Yeah, but I already got us a table so…Friday night?
Amber: (Sighs) Well you already got a table so I guess I can't back down now. As long as you're paying.
Andrew: (Smiles) I promise, I can't wait. I'm taking a night shift so I won't be home tonight.
Amber: (Gives a look) What happened to making a new number 2?
Andrew: Well, you just have to replay number 2 in your mind tonight because I can't get out of it don't be mad.
Amber: (Finishes the charts) Fine, I'll see you tomorrow.
Andrew: See ya.
(Andrew kisses Amber good night and heads upstairs. Amber heads to the lounge walking beside Casey heading there as well)
Casey: (Notices her tired state) Long day?
Amber: Oh yeah, I could use a drink.
Casey: We're hanging out at Joe's after, care to join us?
Amber: Only if one of you pays the tab for me.
Casey: (Chuckles) I got you.
Amber: I'll see you then.
LATER IN THE LOBBY
(Amber puts her phone in her purse after leaving Andrew a message. She almost makes it to the door when Link runs over to her)
Link: Hey, are you heading somewhere?
Amber: I'm headed to the bar for a drink why?
Link: Jo just texted me said I had to come over. Did she say anything to you when you called her?
Amber: (Gasps as she remembers Jo) Oh my god, I forgot to call her after the surgery. I-I had a crazy time in the O.R. and I was distracted by Pierce. Did she say anything else?
Link: (Worried) No she just said to come over, do you think it's bad?
Amber: It's not good that's for sure. I'm coming with you come on we'll take my car.
(Amber and Link run to her car)
LATER AT JO AND ALEXS LOFT
(Amber and Link knock on the door in anticipation relieved to see Jo answering)
Link: Hey.
Jo: Hey.
Amber: I'm sorry I didn't call you after it was-
Jo: It's okay.
Link: How did it go? How are you doing?
Jo: (Sighs) Thanks for coming over.
Link: Uh-oh. Was I right? Was it too much too soon?
Amber: You still have vodka right?
(Amber and Link freeze when they hear a baby fussing)
Jo: One could argue that it was, in fact, too much too soon.
(Amber and Link look in shock at the sleeping baby boy in a carrier on the couch)
