The black and white she-cat launched herself at her attackers, latching onto a brown tomcat's back and digging in her thorn-sharp claws. He yowled in pain, but she did not relent. She planned to banish these dishonorable cats from her territory with a fight they would not forget. She sank her teeth into his ear, pulling backward until she felt it tear. The tomcat screeched, jerking his head out of her grasp and escaping back to his territory.
She whirled around, searching for a new opponent, and threw herself into the heat of battle with a cry strong enough to instill fear in even the most experienced warriors. Her claws tore through enemy fur with the vicious rage of StarClan. The ground near the border stream began to pool with blood from both groups of cats. The she-cat remained unharmed.
As she was swiping her unsheathed claws at the nose of a ginger tabby, she heard a sharp cry emit from one of her clanmates. Hissing at her opponent, she slashed his face one last time before streaking off to the source of the cry.
"Nightwing watch out! Behind you!" one of her clanmates yowled in alarm. The black and white she-cat whipped around and sank her thorn-sharp claws into the back of a dark gray tomcat's shoulder. He let out a yowl of pain and Nightwing bit down hard on his neck. The enemy warrior fell to the ground with a soft thud, blood pooling out of the open wound like a raging river. But the dead tomcat lay laying limply underneath her paws wasn't the only thing stained with the crimson red substance. As a matter of fact, the ground beneath her was stained with the blood of both her enemies and the blood from many of her fallen clanmates.
"Nightwing, help Ashscar quickly! She's running out of time!"
"Where is she, Moonfire?" Nightwing mewed, blinking and tilting her head to the side. The dark ginger she-cat pointed with her tail to where another black and white she-cat was trapped under a heavy looking tomcat, her back legs were weekly kicking at the tomcat's flank, but it was no use, and her attempts were futile.
"Nightwing help me!" came another yowl from a sleek-furred jet-black she-cat, she was pinned to the ground by a dark brown tabby, who had his jaws clamped down on her neck. Growling with rage, the black and white she-cat leapt at the tabby, grabbing onto his back and scratching at his wide shoulders as she scrambled closer to his head. He began to rear up, freeing the she-cat beneath him, but the cat on his shoulders was faster; she extended a paw with claws unsheathed and slashed at his eyes, raking her claws through the soft material. The enemy cat let out a pained caterwaul, and as the black and white she-cat hopped down from his shoulders and growled, the blinded tom stumbled dazedly back to his territory.
The black and white she-cat turned quickly to the cat she had saved. "Nightfang! Are you hurt?"
Nightfang lay still on the ground, but her tail twitched rapidly. She took a moment to respond. "No, I'm just shocked."
"About what?"
"That I nearly died, mouse-brain," she growled back, but her eyes held amusement. "This is no time to joke, though. Keep fighting, I'll join you soon!"
The black and white she-cat ignored her entirely and waited until Nightfang had risen to her paws to fight. The two she-cats then worked as one, clawing at enemies from both sides and pinning them down, one raking their exposed underbelly or clawing at their faces. They had chased off multiple enemy cats, but their Clan was still being pushed back. The attackers were strong and much greater in number, not to mention fueled with the promise of new hunting territory and prosperity. LightClan was losing.
The she-cats rushed to the back of their defending line, where a long-haired she-cat crouched low to the ground, hiding from their rival Clan.
"Where in the name of StarClan are those slimy and creepy shadow-slithering fools!" the black and white she-cat yowled, glaring up at the sky as she stared back at Nightfang, who looked back at her with the same annoyed expression on her face.
"I think those shadow-slithering fools are running right towards us," the two she-cats blinked and turned their heads to see one of their clanmates standing about a tail-length away from them. Her soft, silky, fluffy white fur was dappled with cream, and her big, sparkling blue eyes were the colour of shimmering ice. "I agree with you Nightwing," the fluffy white she-cat continued, nodding her head to said cat as she spoke.
"Hey, has anyone seen Ashscar?" the fluffy white she-cat asked, her blue eyes worriedly scanning the battlefield for any sign of the LightClan deputy.
Nightfang sighed softly and shook her head. "Last I saw her, she was fighting with a black-and-gray striped tabby tom." The dark-furred she-cat responded.
"The better question is," Nightwing began with a heavy sigh. "Where is our no-good-for-nothing Clan leader?"
"Yeah, where is she Frostfire?" Nightfang asked her.
"She's over there hiding like the cowardly cat she is!" Frostfire hissed, her fur bristling and her sapphire-colored eyes narrowing into angry slits.
Nightwing growled lowly and stormed over to where Snowstar was hiding, her black and white fur bristling and purple eyes burring with fury.
"Snowstar!" the black and white she-cat meowed angrily. "What are you doing? Join the battle, you useless ball of fur!"
She did not reply, simply staring at one of her warriors as they were struck down by a large gray enemy cat. Her mouth widened as she yowled, "LightClan! Retreat!"
LightClan warriors began to retreat, ducking away from claws and running through the dense foliage to their camp. The pair of she-cats prepared to stand their ground, but the attacking DarkClan warriors had different ideas. Fueled with triumph at their impending success, the warriors turned on the few LightClan cats that were left fighting and attempted to drive them forcefully back into their territory. Only the she-cats and three other warriors remained, forming a thin defensive line, their hind legs catching on tree roots as they slashed their claws at the flood of attacking cats.
Nightwing hissed angrily as she glared daggers at her Clan leader with disgust shining in her dark purple eyes. "What are you doing Snowstar? We can still fight! Get back here you sorry excuse of a Clan leader! Who in there right mind made you Clan leader anyways? Ashscar or Nightfang would make better Clan leaders than you!"
Snowstar turned and glared right back at Nightwing. "I said to retreat! Are you a deff kit? Listen when your leader is speaking to you!" Nightwing hissed at the LightClan leader and turned away, storming off into the woods with her sisters following close behind her.
"I hate this! Now DarkClan will think we're week! And it's all thanks to our mouse-brain of a Clan leader! Ugh! She's a selfish being and a total cowered!" Rippledawn hissed, lashing her dark ginger tail back and forth, her pine-green eyes narrowed into slits as she continued to trott back into camp with the rest of her clanmates close behind her. "I know, it's absolutely ridiculous! What in the name of StarClan is up with Snowstar anyway? Can't we pick a new leader to lead our Clan?"
Nightwing gave a frustrated sigh and shook her head. "Sadly that's against the warrior code, I wish we could do that though." Ashscar nodded in agreement and turned around to her clanmates while giving a knowing look to Nightfang and Rippledawn.
"I vote that Snowstar should be fed to wolves!" Irontail snarled, hissing and lashing her light-gray-and-white tail in anger as she stared directly into Springlight's amber gaze with her crystal blue gaze.
"I vote in agreement with that statement, don't you Mintfur?" Spottedtail mewed. The the white-and-cream she-cat nodded her head in agreement at her friend's statement.
The light was fading by the time the small group of cats could see anything other than waving grass. The lowering sun in the west tinted the sky a dusky orange, and the trees of the small clearing ahead of them was casting long shadows.
They walk past the border marks, and finally come in site of camp. They all let out excited squeals, and run into camp. And as Nightwing had suspected, both Cinderpool and Leafpaw were waiting for them outside the entrance to Cinderpool's den.
