Heero stood at the doorway, quietly watching as his once bright and happy lover rocked back and forth on the floor beside the couch. It hurt him so much to see Duo like this. His violet eyes that had once sparkled with mischievousness and wit were now dim and cloudy, barely showing any emotion at all.
For two months now his vibrant braided lover had been trapped, lost in his own world. A world that, as far as Heero could tell from Duo's nightmares and fits of rage, was not pleasant. He could only watch as his lover slipped further and further away from him. And it was his fault. God help him, it was all his fault.
If only...those were the two words that plagued Heero long after he had turned out the lights and Duo's breathing beside him had turned deep and even. If only he hadn't said it, damn him! Duo had told Heero about his past, so he knew, knew, that Duo didn't want to hear those words. He was so afraid of what would happen if he did. But out they had slipped, I love you Duo.
Before Heero even had time to realize what he had said, Duo had leapt from the bed as if it were made of hot coals and backed into a corner of the bedroom, tears sliding down his cheeks. When Heero had gotten up to try and comfort him, Duo had cringed, pressing back into the corner even more. Still the pain he felt because of this was nothing compared to how much he had hurt when Duo had rested his head on his arms and began to sob, repeating two words that tore at Heero's heart and still echoed through his mind. 'Don't die... don't die...'
