Verteidigen

DISCLAIMER: Nah, I don't own anything from Alias (though I wouldn't mind, too terribly, if I had Sark and Vaughn) so don't sue me, cuz I got nothing.
"I gave Sloane the list, and asked him to follow up on those leads. He swore the meeting would remain between us. I'm sure he's on the phone with Ariana Kane right now," I tell Vaughn, who merely nods in reply. He's preoccupied, and I can tell what he's thinking about. It's obvious.
Haladki.
Vaughn was never fond of that weasel, but his morals won't allow him to approve of what I had to do, or even to accept it as a necessary evil. But while I do know who he's thinking about, I can't even begin to guess at what, exactly, he thinks of it. He takes care of that a few moments later.
"You killed Haladki." He's very simple and straightforward, no beating around the bush on this.
"I did only what was necessary."
"Blowing his brains out was 'only' necessary?" Of course he doesn't understand; I'm not surprised. Actually, I rather expected it.
"Need I remind you, Agent Vaughn, that you were not there. You don't know what I know." He nods slightly, and looks away for a moment. He then turns back and meets my eyes again.
"You're right, I don't know. So why don't you clue me in?" I give him a look. He doesn't truly want to know; he simply wants to hear what kind of excuse I'll offer to pardon my deed.
"He was the mole. His continued existence would have endangered Sydney's life." Vaughn shuts his eyes for a moment.
"So you killed him. Just like that. Did you even consider any other possible courses of action?"
"Such as what, Agent Vaughn? Take him to the CIA and tell Devlin all about it, postponing Sydney's efforts to save Mr. Tippin? Or should I have left him tied down somewhere to deal with when we returned? Or would you have preferred that I allow him to walk out of there alive?" Vaughn knows the truth of my words, I can see it in his eyes. But again, his naïve sense of morality is clouding his judgement. I continue before he can come up with any rebuttal.
"As you're well aware, I don't have time for this right now. I nee-" He interrupts me, an unrecognizable tone to his voice.
"Are you going to tell Devlin?"
"I don't know. That hasn't exactly been at the forefront of my thoughts the last few months."
"That's understandable Jack, but you killed him. He may have been the biggest ass to ever work for the CIA, but he was an agent nonetheless."
"I did what was necessary to protect my daughter. You should be able to appreciate that."
"Not too many fathers kill a man to protect their daughter."
"Not too many fathers are faced with a situation in which they have to kill to protect their child." He can't argue with that, and he knows it.
"Now if you'll excuse me Agent Vaughn, I need to figure out how to save myself from Kane's witch hunt." Knowing full well that this is far from over, I take my leave of him, and head for the Joint Task Forces building. I may hate the idea, but Irina Derevko is one of the only people who can help me now.
This was just an idea I had when I was vacuuming earlier (I seriously keep having all these story ideas when I'm in the middle of cleaning). Obviously, Vaughn was less than thrilled when he heard about Haladki, so I wouldn't be surprised if he confronts Jack sooner or later. Anyway, review and I'll love you forever!
Oh yeah, the title Verteidigen is German for to protect/defend.
