A Love Not Meant to Be

There are some who would say love is a petty thing,

something not at all worth bothering.

So said, a girl, young and naïve,

who wore her heart upon her sleeve.

Little did she know of the events to come,

a skeptic no more would she become.

A young man, poised, polished with charm,

thought that courting the girl was no reason for harm.

His love for her grew stronger each day,

as she continued to try and push him away.

Until one day, when he was deathly ill,

she realized her love for him with a pang of guilt.

As he slipped away, he whispered to her,

I'll love you forever, that I know for sure.

The girl's heart broke as she watched her love die,

her grief was immense, no more tears left to cry.

I promise, she said, through a dense haze of woe,

to honor our love and never let it go.
