" Thank you for coming all the way here from Osaka, Hattori-san."
Yukiko Kudo, actress, wife, and mother of the most troublesome son ever. Wait no, Chiyo has the most troublesome son, the boy was a menace and Yukiko was so proud of the tiny magician. But her son, 7 years old and already so smart for his age like his father and also one of her beloved stars in her sky, Shinichi had a curse that was such a pain in the ass!
The boy was young and a rightful genius, but had also been cursed by a Shinigami! Her poor baby had the Curse of Death, the mark imprinted on his skin the moment he took his first breath as a baby.
And now that he was 7 and already asking questions and even solving smaller crimes like burglary, she and Yusaku had decided they needed a counterbalance or at least a way for him to continue with his career choice of being a detective and not choose the wrong culprit for whatever death case comes his way.
That was when they came across familiars and a certain family branch of Kitsune in Osaka that embodied the principles of Justice and flames of retribution when researching for solutions to Shinichi's condition, asking around colleagues and witches. It was a rather young looking woman that had introduced them to familiars and the Kitsune family.
" It's nothing, Kudo-san. I'm here with my son. As my wife and I read through your request, we had the same idea that our son would be best suited for this particular case."
Yukiko noted that the man's accent was a weird mix between Kansai-ben and Tokyo-ben, like the man had tried too hard to follow along with people living in Tokyo.
Hattori moved aside, moving a hand back to push a smaller body forwards. A dark skinned boy with the biggest green eyes stared up at her, a small dash of red along his cheeks as he smiled up at her shyly, a baseball cap hid his ears and his pants twitched once in a while due to his tails being hidden under the dark blue fabric. He was wearing a women's kimono on top of a white t-shirt. Yukiko cooed, bending down to reach towards the boy, 'aww'-ing when the boy waddled forwards into her arms.
" He's absolutely adorable!" Yukiko murmured, using her feet to shut the door as Hattori stepped in, her husband beckoning the kitsune man into their house while she was busy with calling for Shinichi to come down, still holding onto the small boy.
And small, he was. The kitsune boy was a few inches smaller than Shinichi and so much lighter. " Darling, you can let your ears and tails out now, don't worry."
Just as she finished her sentence, the boy's extra appendages popped out from under the cap and band of his pants, his hat falling off at the force his ears came up from their folded down positions, just in time as Shinichi steps down the last steps of the staircase.
"... Okaa, what did I just witness? Why does he have fox ears and two tails –"
Ah! How cute, already using complex words like 'witness', her son!
" Shin-chan! This is –" " Hattori Heiji, my son." " – Heiji-kun! He and his father are kitsune, and as long as we complete this contract you don't have to worry about not catching the right culprit for your future cases!"
Shinichi hummed, examining the guests in the house before shrugging and moving to plop himself on the couch beside his father. Yusaku pulled him closer as Yukiko let Heiji go to sit beside her son while Heiji shuffled to stand at the seat his father had taken.
" Contract?"
Shinichi turned to look at his father, tilting his head. Heiji's tails swooshed side to side as the boy bounced on the balls of his feet, fidgeting with the fabric hanging down his forearms, the patterned cloth covering his hands. His eyes sparkled as he examined her son, the red along his cheeks darkening the longer he stared.
How adorable! Yukiko was seeing signs of a crush, she squealed internally.
" Yes! Hattori-san and his son here are a part of a Kitsune branch family, embodying the principles of justice and flames of retribution. Heiji-kun here is the strongest omen the family has had in decades, and Hattori-san felt that it would be best for him to be the one to complete the contract we've been discussing for months now!"
" Kitsune?"
The Hattori patriarch took over the explanation with a sharp cough that directed all attention at him. He nodded at Shinichi.
" Kitsune are mythical creatures, yes – however we are also familiars to normal people. We're a bunch of foxes with a human form, and most stories about us are true, we do have high intelligence and trickster personalities. Yes, we do have powers as well. When in a contract, our contractors gain an increased lifespan and higher durability and heal faster. As my family are all omens of justice and flames, we bring justice wherever we are, be it crimes or even a small argument, we solve everything as long as someone is in the wrong.
" Your parents and I have agreed that Heiji and you are to have a full contract –"
At this, Heiji's ears perked up and he turned to his father quickly, a worried frown maring his face. " But, father! That means –"
A hand held up and the boy clicked his mouth shut.
" In our laws, a full contract is a marriage."
Heiji looked down as Shinichi looked up at the older man in shock, " What…?"
Hattori didn't even wait for the boy to digest the information.
" Thus, you'll be marrying my son as soon as you are of age in mortal laws as well."
One look at his parents and Shinichi knew he wouldn't be getting out of this. He sighed and nodded, " Okay."
Sure, he would have to get over his stupid crush on Ran for this marriage to even work, but he parents could've chosen someone worse. At least the boy was cute; with his smaller stature, fluffy black ears and tails, bright emerald green eyes and – actually very girly eyelashes and face.
Shinichi moved forwards to grab Heiji's hand and dragged the boy up the staircase and into his room. He pushed the door shut and moved to sit on his bed, staring at the smaller boy. Heiji had started to kick his feet silently, looking down at the wooden floor.
" Sorry ya have to deal with me. I've been told I'm a handful –"
" You're cute. I don't mind, you seem interesting."
Shinichi smirked as the other kid's head shot upwards, his doe eyes even bigger with shock. He waved a hand, gesturing for Heiji to come closer.
" Come on, I want to learn more about you."
A few minutes of playing an ice breaker game later, Shinichi pops in with a tray of snacks his mother had passed to him when he went out to go to the toilet. He then asks, " If we're getting married, does that mean you're my wife?"
" E– Eh!? I, uh– I think I'm more of yer husband? But bein' yer wife doesn' sound that bad, I suppose," Heiji huffed, rolling his eyes as he bent over to reach for one of the chocolate biscuits laid around the tray in a pile. Shinichi smiled.
" Okay then, wife."
Heiji flushed red and ducked his head, swatting at Shinichi's arm. Shinichi cackled.
Yes, it looks like he'll be having a lot of fun with this.
When the Hattori family left, a pair of oversized gold promise rings glinting on each boy's left ring finger, it was time for dinner.
Shinichi sat at his usual seat and stared at the ring, smiling slightly at his reflection in the smooth metal, thinking of a dark skinned boy who liked kendo and had such a boisterous personality nothing like the shy and quiet boy he had met at first.
" So, Shin-chan, what do you think of Heiji-kun?"
" … I like him."
" Oh? That's good then!"
Yeah, it was great.
