"This is where it starts" an Husky said to himself seeing the gates into the military base come into view.
"Take out your ID cards and hold them above your heads!" Yelled the bus driver.
The Husky reached into his pocket to get his ID out his wallet and held it high above his head as they passed by the gate.
"Put away your cards!" Yelled the bus driver again.
After what felt like forever. The bus came to a stop near a building with X markings in the front. Within a few seconds, a bulldog in uniform stepped out the building heading towards the bus stepping inside.
"Welcome to Fort Jackson. This is only the start of your career into the Army. Anyone wearing a headgear similer to mine are Drill Sergeant and will be addressed with either Yes or no Drill Sergeant. Understood!"
"YES DRILL SERGEANT!" Yelled everyone
"Within then 2 minutes get off my bus holding your bag in your right hand, packet in left hand then stand on an X with your heels together, feet pointed 45 degree outwards, arms against the side of your body, paws making a fist lining up, thumb straight out along the seams of your pants, with your bag placed in front of you, packet placed on top. Move now!"
Everyone quickly grabbed their bags and rushed out the bus' door trying to find a X to stand on.
"TIME'S UP! STOP MOVING!" Yelled the Bulldog making everyone stop in their track.
"I give yall one task yet failed to do so task so everyone get in the push ups position now!"
"This will be known as the Front leaning rest position. The command to be put in this position is Front leaning rest position move. On move you'll move into this position and hold this position until told to push or otherwise instructed. Start pushing."
The Husky then started to do push ups thinking to himself what has he gotten himself into.
"Hurry up and find a X before I change my mind"
Everyone got up and ran towards a X.
"Now in rows starting with the right row. Everyone will file into the building and enter the first room to your right. There you'll find rows of tables. Find one with a book. Move"
Row by row everyone filed into the room.
"You'll take any paperwork out and place them on top of your packet. I repeat you'll take out any paperwork and place them on top of your packet. Do so now."
"Now grab the index card and place it in front of you."
"Next you'll write down your last name top left on the index card. Do now.
The Husky began writing his last name whrispering it to himself.
"Huskton"
"After you'll write the last four of your social security number where it says SSN. Do so now"
"In the center of the card is your platoon number. If for whatever reason you get separated from your platoon, you'll sound off your platoon number and those within the platoon will echo it back. The number left of your platoon number is your roster. This will be used as your identification number."
"As for your packets, place your orders on top and everything else underneath. Do so now."
"The book you see in front of you is known as the Blue Book. Inside said book is where you'll learn the Army values, culture, history, and training you'll go throughout basic training."
"Now grab the blue book, index card, leave behind your packets and follow me to the next room starting with the first row."
Huskton with everyone else, picked up their items including the Blue book and by rows filed into the next room. Like earlier, there was X markings in the room which everyone instictly stand on.
"Now you'll pick up your bag, unzip any pockets and flip your bag upside down. Do so now."
The sound of items hitting the ground echoed throughout the room.
"Now shake your bags then place it in front of you."
"Now we'll ask you for a set of items. If you have said items you'll place them in whatever bin I tell you to."
Moments later
Everyone once again were form up outside another building waiting but being late into the night with am freezing breeze. Huskton being a Husky obviously wasn't effected but noticed other species of dog who weren't thick coated shivering.
After awhile. Someone open the door, ordering them inside.
Inside the building was rows of clothing, a line telling them where to go which they followed. As they followed the line. Yelling could be heard by a lady who worked there for everyone's height and weight. Huskton soon was next.
"Height and weight" She ordered.
"Ahh" Said Huskton.
"WHATS YOUR HEIGHT AND WEIGHT!"
"5'6 and 124 pounds ma'am" Replied Huskton.
"Your size is small. Next." She said pointing a finger to another room.
Huskton entered a room and saw Dogs getting their clothing and placing them inside a green bag.
"Here's your laundry bag. Place any items given to you inside and move to the next station."
Huskton within few minutes already had a full bag. Formed up outside, an Drill Sergeant waiting for everyone to be finished instructed them to empty out their laundry bags.
"Pick up your camelbak with a bladder. You'll take the bladder out the plastic bag and place it inside the camelbak with the hose sticking out on the left side."
Huskton quickly begin what he was told struggling to get the bladder inside.
"Next you should have three short sleeves, two long sleeves, two shorts, one pants, one jacket, one fleece cap, four pairs of socks, 2 pairs of gloves, one cloth and one leather."
Huskton not fully paying attention as he was struggling to get the bladder inside.
"Here let me help you" Someone whispered to him helping him get the bladder inside.
"Thank you" Huskton whispered back.
After making sure he has everything. They were given linens and sent to the barracks to get some rest before the 3am wake up time.
As everyone rushed into the barracks to get some sleep. Huskton decided to pick the top bunk bed in the corner of the room, placed his items inside the locker then jumped onto bed but noticed the Dog who helped him earlier pick the bunk bed underneath him. Huskton normally a quiet Dog built up the courage to speak to him.
"Hey ehh thanks for helping me" Huskton said.
"No problem. The name's Heeler by the way."
"Name's Ant- I mean Huskton." Forgetting first names don't matter in the military.
"Nice to meet you Huskton but we should talk later and get to bed cause we have only like an hour to rest." Heeler said confusing Huskton.
"Wait an hour?!" Huskton looked at the clock on the wall seeing it was 1:47am.
Huskton sighed faceplanting his pillow thinking to himself that he made a mistake and should've just went to college.
"Good night I guess Heeler."
"Good night Huskton"
An hour of sleep later
As they were sound asleep. The room lit up with a yellow flash as a voice from the intercom echoed.
"Wake up! Wake up! Be down in 30 minutes. Uniform is full winter AFPU (Army Fitness Physical Uniform) which is short sleeve, long sleeve over, pants over shorts, jacket, fleece cap, gloves, with camelbak on and full."
Everyone in a panic scabbled through their locker to get on the uniform ordered by the voice in the intercom.
Thankfully Huskton had his stuff organized so he was able to easily grab what he needed.
"Short sleeve, long sleeve over, shorts with pants over-" Huskton saying what he needed to wear to himself.
Once everyone formed outside. A group of Dogs dropped off boxes of MREs in front of each platoon.
"Send two up front to pass these to everyone." Ordered the Dogs.
After everyone got their MREs, they were told they had 15 mins to eat.
"Lemon Pepper Tuna?" Huskton said to himself.
"You got Tuna? I got Beef Ravioli." Heeler said. Huskton not realizing he was sitting next to him.
Huskton struggled to open up his MRE because despite wearing gloves and being a Husky. The freezing cold wind made his hand almost numb. He just ended up using his claws to open up the MRE. He dumbed out its content to find crackers, cheese spread with jalapenos, the lemon pepper tuna, spoon with some other crap. He picked up and open up the main dish. Taking a big scoop of tuna and eating it. He gagged when the taste first entered his mouth but despite its nasty taste. He forced himself not wanting to be hungry not knowing when he'll eat next.
He then picked up the crackers and cheese spread with jalapenos. He look towards Heeler.
"Hey you have normal cheese spread?"
Heeler turned towards Huskton and shallowed his food before responding.
"Ahhh...yes. Why?" Asked Heeler.
"Because I can't stand spicy stuff. Wanna trade?"
Heeler nodded in agreement and they traded each other cheese spread.
"So what made you join the Army?" Asked Heeler trying to start a conversation.
Huskton stop eating to really think about his answer.
"To get adult life started. Felt like a burden on my family after High School. What about you?"
"Almost the same reason as yours. I recently moved back from Australia." Heeler explained.
"You're from Australia? You don't sound like one."
"I was born in America but moved to Australia after-" Heeler paused for a second before contining. "Well let's say something bad happen but I moved back here since I couldn't join the Australian military."
Huskton nodded to his answer and they both went back to eating before time's up.
"5 MORE MINUTES. EVERYTHING BETTER BE IN THE TRASH CAN BEFORE TIME'S UP." Yelled the Drill Sergeant.
Huskton looked down in despair knowing its only the first day.
