Chapter 1
"Welcome back, Junior, how was the honeymoon?" Parker asked as Don Flack walked into the pit the Sunday after Labor Day.
"Too damn short, considering how long we had to wait; and I definitely didn't miss any of your mugs," Flack replied with a smirk.
Lafferty rolled his eyes and sneered, "Princess knitting baby booties up in SVD yet?"
Flack growled, "give it a rest, Tom. No, she is not."
"Nor will she be knitting them anywhere anytime soon," Gus said, appearing behind Flack, balancing a cup of coffee on top of a file box.
Daddino appeared in the doorway of his office. "Oh good, yous love birds are finally here," he said, trying to not smile.
He gestured to an empty desk,"set that down before you spill it, Broussard, er, Flack, er, whatever. Now both of you get your asses in my office!"
Don and Gus looked at each other and shrugged before following the Lieutenant, ignoring the teasing and jeering behind them.
"Sit," Daddino commanded as soon as they stepped over the threshold, Flack closing the door behind them.
The pair complied, curious as to what was going on. Especially considering Doyle had just told Gus to report back down to Homicide, handing her a box and mug of coffee with a wink saying, "requested granted, kid."
Gus leaned forward, tucking her fist under her chin, asking, "what's going on, Loo?"
"Just some administrative bullshit, Broussard." He paused, "or is it Flack, because that's gonna be damn confusing and Broussard-Flack is a mouthful."
Don and Gus slid their eyes towards each other, a smirk playing on both of their faces. They had already talked about this before the wedding, and it had been the biggest topic of conversation with Flack's family since then. "The NYPD can only handle one Flack at a time, Loo, it's still Broussard at work," she explained.
"Oh thank god," Daddino said, making a note on the pad in front of him.
Flack craned his neck, trying to see what he had written. "What kind of BS, Tony?" Flack asked, catching his boss' gaze intently.
"While the two of you were traipsing around upstate," the pair snickered; with only a scant few days away, they had barely left the cabin, "I was fielding phone calls and emails from HR, OEI and Chief of Ds." He took in the two furrowed foreheads in front of him.
"About a case?" Gus asked worriedly.
He thought about dragging this on, but he just couldn't do it. He needed the CompStat boost and he wanted his dream team back together. "No, about her transfer request back down here and wading through the administrative intricacies of family versus spouses being partners."
"Then why did Doyle send me down here?" Gus implored, her voice catching.
"Sunshine, take a breath," Flack said, flashing her a dimple before giving Daddino a warning look.
"It's fine, you're back in homicide, Broussard, but-" they both took a deep breath in, "it's gonna be a few weeks before you can partner together again, some things have to go up the chain," he said with a gesture.
"What kind of things?" Gus asked suspiciously.
Daddino slid an official looking envelope towards Gus. "Little late wedding gift from me and Doyle," he said breaking out into a grin.
She pulled out the sheet of NYPD letterhead, scanning it quickly, "years of service, commendations, interdisciplinary departments, specialized skill set…promotion to Detective First Grade," she read aloud, looking up in shock, her eyes shining.
"Did you know about this, Don?" she asked, handing the letter over to his waiting hand.
"No clue, babe, kind of makes my wedding gift look like peanuts though," he teased, squeezing her arm, wanting to pull her into his lap.
"You are the ultimate wedding gift, blue eyes," she said, grinning from ear to ear.
Daddino rolled his eyes, "stop it, before yous make me stop on the way home to buy my wife flowers."
Flack let out a small snort, "that wouldn't be the worst idea anyway, Tony."
"Get out of here, before I take it back. Broussard you're with Parker until HR pushes the right papers around."
Parker shook his head in wonder as Gus unpacked the few meager items from her box. "How did you manage to get in trouble with the Brass on your honeymoon, Princess?"
"She's not in trouble, Parker, she got a promotion. Have you met your temporary partner, Detective First Grade Augusta Broussard?" Flack said, giving in, and pulling her into his side and kissing her on the head.
"Wonder who pulled those strings?" Montgomery remarked.
"Yeah, how long have I been humping it at Third grade and this one takes a vacation in New Orleans and was on easy street up in Special Vics and gets promoted? Must be some OEI thing," Lafferty said dismissively.
"Vacation?" Gus snapped as Flack snarled, "easy street?"
"Exactly how many times have you been shot, stabbed, or almost blown up, Tom?" Daddino bellowed from his doorway, "now go find something to do before I do it for you. Don't you Flacks have to get to Brooklyn?" he said to the pair, pointing at the clock.
"Broussard, Loo," Gus replied, pulling her coat on with a broad grin.
After the dedication ceremony, Gus and Mac caught up, something they hadn't had much of a chance to do since the wedding and Mac's move to the civilian lab.
He looked up from her promotion letter with a look of pride, "congratulations, Gus!"
Gus narrowed her eyes at him, "did you have anything to do with this, Uncle Mac?"
"How could I? I am just a lowly civilian," he gestured to his empty belt.
Gus snorted, "yeah right, I agree with Jo, you'll be back before Christmas, hell, I'll bet you'll be back before Halloween."
He shook his head with a wry grin, "this was on your own merit, Augusta. I did write a letter when Daddino and Doyle asked, but so did a lot of people. Even your partner from that summer in New Orleans."
"McCay?" she asked incredulous. "Among others. In case the promotion didn't clue you in, you're a great detective, Gussie, and a lot of people love and support you."
"Yeah, yeah," she said, blushing to her roots, "I got to get back to the precinct. Just call me when you are back in your lab!"
