Notes: I know some of the details about Kim and Ron in this story are not what they were in the KP show. Like in this story, I know I have them meeting at age 8 instead of Pre-K, but it's fanfiction. Why not? :)
On to the story!
"What do you mean you're moving?!"
"I mean, I'm moving, Ron." Kim explained.
"Why?"
"Because my Dad got offered a job at NASA's headquarters. He's all excited about it and we're gonna be moving to Washington D.C. this weekend. They already closed on a house."
"But... if you're moving then... how are we gonna stay in touch?"
"We can still talk over webcam.."
"It's not the same..." Ron lowered his head.
Kim sighed and sat down next to Ron on the tree-house sofa. "No, it's not, is it?"
There was a great chasm they now felt had been opened between them. These few moments of silence pierced them both to the heart. This really felt like the end of something special.
"I can webcam call you everyday." Kim looked up over at Ron from next to her.
Ron merely nodded his head, his face, expressionless, his eyes, empty.
"So..." Ron began, "does this mean we're breaking up?"
Kim felt that question jar her. Never had she ever expected to here such a question, especially given the great history she and Ron had. Nor did she ever think this could ever be a possibility. Of breaking up. But then again, she reasoned, neither did she ever think she would move away from Ron or Middleton.
"I don't know Ron... I want to try to make it work. Do you?"
Ron looked at her. "Of course, I do. Kim, you're my life. My soulmate, I mean without you, I don't know who I am."
"I feel the same way." She held his hands as she turned to him. "I mean, we've known each other our whole lives. I'm not willing to quit if you are."
"I'm not either, Kim. I'll never let go."
3 Months Later
"You look really stoked, Ron-man." Felix said as he and Ron exited through the doors of Middleton High.
"I am!" He beamed. "Now that Spring break is here, I get to go and see Kim tomorrow! Gosh, you don't know how hard it's been trying to survive these last few months of school without her here."
"I can tell. You were staring at the clock for the last few minutes, waiting for the bell to ring. I didn't think you would make it before you were going to explode." He smirked at his best friend as they began their trek home. It was pretty cool they lived on the same street as each other.
"Har, har!" Ron mocked as Felix laughed. "But this is it, man! Senior year, the school year is most of the way over, I'm gonna do it."
"Oh," Felix said as he rubbed the back of his neck. "You mean the proposal thing, right?"
"Exactly! And I know how I'm gonna do it, too-"
Ron and Felix talked about Ron's Spring break ideas regarding Kim all the way to Ron's house.
"It sounds like you got it all planned out, then, huh?" Felix grinned.
"You bet! Now all I have to do is.."
"Ron! Look!" Felix tugged on Ron's sleeve to force him to a complete stop. Ron looked down at Felix to see what he was pointing at and there in the drive way of Kim's old house was two large moving trucks. No one was out there at the moment. Ron also noticed the "For Sale" sign had been taken down.
Ron froze for a good few seconds at that.
"Uh, Ron-man? You okay?"
Ron came to and shook his head. "U.. um, yeah."
"Well that is certainly interesting. I wonder who your new neighbors are."
"I.. I'm not sure." Ron said, downtrodden with memories of Kim living next to him, flooding back into his mind.
"Well, I'll see you later, man. I'll call you later." Felix said as he began to wheel past Ron down the sidewalk.
"...yeah." Ron said, still in a daze.
(flashback)
"Hey, Ron!"
"Yeah, K.P.?"
8 year-old Kim came running up to 8 year-old him. "Look at this cool caterpillar I found! Look at it's colors." She marveled at it.
Ron smiled. "Oh wow. Well, you know what I think?"
"Huh? What's that?" She beamed.
Ron poked her quickly. "Tag! You're it!"
Kim shrieked and grunted. "Ron! I'm so making you pay for that!"
Just then a playful chase pursued as Kim chased her crazy bff around his backyard. Just as Ron thought he was going to get back to the tree house which was "base", he tripped over a rather large tree branch that was lying on the ground and fell. Ron whimpered, holding his knee.
"Ron!" Kim shouted and ran into the house. Just a few minutes later, she came running back out with a first aide kit.
"Where are you hurt?" She asked.
Ron groaned as he ran his thumb over his rather-red, bruised knee. "Right here."
"Okay, hold still. My mom actually taught me how to take care of a wound."
Kim took a gauze from the box and the bottle of bactine. She dabbed a couple drops on the pad.
"Okay, this may sting a little."
"Oh, no." Ron whimpered.
"1, 2...3." Kim finally said as Ron clenched his eyes shut.
"Ow!"
"Sorry. I know it stings a bit. I always hate it, but this will help it."
The burning in his leg started to subside after a few seconds. "You say your mom taught you?"
"Yeah, well, I learned more through observation. She always helps me if I get a cut." She elaborated as she began to clean up and put everything back in the kit. Then she took out a band-aid and placed it over his wound.
Ron sighed in relief. "Thanks, K.P., you're the best."
"It's so not the drama, Ron!" She smiled. "Even though I just moved in, you're my best friend now. I'd do anything to take care of you."
"Me too, Kim. Best friends... forever."
(Back to reality)
The last word, replayed in his head over and over. Ron's chest began to heave a little bit as he thought about that first day he met Kim. They were 8 years old, and she and her parents had just moved to Middleton, Colorado.
The memory was a great one, but also a painful one as he remembered just a few months ago, she was torn from his life. Well, not completely. On the flip side, albeit that they weren't near each other anymore, they still stayed in close contact via skype and myspace (this was like 2006'ish) and were still dating. And he was going to get to fly over there and she would be there to greet him at the terminal!
"Ronald!"
Ron was snapped out of his daydreaming.
"What?"
There out on the front lawn were his parents, placing stuff on long tables. By now there were items of all sorts laid out and boxes scattered about.
"Ronald, would you help us, please? We're trying to get ready for the garage sale."
"Oh.. uh, that's today?" Ron sighed, really wishing that it wasn't since he wanted to speak with Kim.
"Ronnie, upstairs in our bedroom is a box full of your Dad's old neckties. Could you be a dear and bring it down here, please?"
"Yeah, I have something I need to do real quick, so let me just..."
"Ronald?" His dad asked and looked around in time to see him run into the house, unaware, however, that a pair of eyes had been watching him the whole time.
Ron jogged upstairs to his bedroom, he shrugged his backpack off his shoulders, letting it land to the floor and immediately got onto his computer. He signed into myspace and looked up Kim. He opened her messanger and began typing away.
"Hey, KP, you home?"
Just a minute later..
"Yeah, yea, I'm home."
"I'm gonna skype you, you free to do that now?"
Another minute..
"Yea. You can call in 5 minutes."
"Alright" He responded back.
Ron then logged into Skype and waited like she had said. Then in the skype chat box, Kim messaged Ron first.
"Hey, so I'm gonna call you..."
"Okay." He typed back.
Just then, Kim was calling Ron. Ron accepted almost immediately. He was so anxious and excited to talk to Kim about his coming to D.C.
"Hey K.P.!" Ron cheered.
Kim's room was rather dark and her shades were down. Odd. The only way he could really see her face was through the glaring light coming off her screen. "Hey." She mumbled.
"Everything okay?" Ron said.
"Yeah.. yeah. So what's up?" She said, her voice rather low.
"Just thinking about how great our spring break is going to be. I've been missing the most bon-diggity girlfriend ever!"
"You haven't missed me, Ron. We've been doing this now for a while." She said without emotion.
"Yeah.. I know." Ron said, getting rather weirded out by Kim demeanor but going with it anyway. Nonetheless, it still rather unnerved him. She was usually happy to see and talk to him. Almost as anxious as he was.
"So you missed me, huh?" She said into the screen.
"Yeah. I mean, I know we've been talking but this isn't the same. I can't hold you, kiss you, lay awake with you on the tree house couch as we look up through the ceiling's window and look at the stars and.. talk about our futures together."
"Yeah." Kim said rather sharply, under her breath and biting her nail.
"And you not being here.. it's just.. weird. There's even two big moving trucks in your old drive way. I guess your house sold."
"Yeah, that sucks but... what could we do?" Kim said silently. "I'm thousands of miles away and Ron... you do know everything has to come to an end sometime right?"
"Uhh... what do you mean, K.P.?" Ron said, sort of getting even more unnerved. Something was just... off about his Kim.
"Well... you know..." Kim said before off to the side, out of the picture, came in a gusher of light and the sound of a toilet being flushed. Ron could tell a door had just opened by the way the light came into the dark bedroom. Just then, the face of a guy with a couple piercings and spiked black hair had come into view and leaned into Kim's cheek and gave it a kiss. He obviously didn't know she was doing a webcam with her boyfriend.
Ron's heart stopped and his eyes went wide. He began shaking like a leaf in his swivel chair.
"Thanks for the quicky, babe." The guy said. "I'll be back to pick you up at around 8 on my bike and we can go out on our date." Then he walked out.
Ron's mouth dropped wide open. He couldn't comprehend what he just witnessed. It all began to make sense to him now. Kim's lack of attentiveness, interest, how she appeared nervous... she had just cheated on him.
"Um.. Ron." Kim started wearily.
Ron still couldn't move.
"Ron... I.. I can explain."
"K.. Kim, w- what?"
"I'm really sorry. Just hear me out, okay?"
"Hear you out..." Ron said shaking even more now, his fists clenched and banged on his desk. "Hear you out? I think I just saw everything very clearly, Kim! You're cheating on me?!"
Kim began tearing up. "Ron, it isn't as simple as you think it is!"
"Well, other than a 'quicky' and a 'date', what else am I missing? How is that not so simple to understand?!"
The tears were now flowing down her cheeks. "I was going to tell you today... I started seeing someone and I wanted to go out with him. You haven't been here and I... like I said... I was going to tell you but.."
Ron shut off the call and deleted Kim from his skype and myspace before running out of his room. His life, as he knew it, was shattered. And just like that, in the blink of an eye, 10 years gone in one action. Their relationship was now history.
Next Week: Tara!
