Chapter 1
In the city of Cali, Colombia there lived a 15-year-old girl named Mirabel Madrigal. She was a kind, compassionate, friendly, and sociable. She lived in a big house just outside the city with not just her family, but extended family as well.
She lived with her mother, Julieta, her father Augustin, her older sisters, Isabela and Luisa; her mom's brother, her uncle Bruno, her mom's sister, her aunt Pepa, her uncle Felix, her cousins, Dolores, Camillo, and Antonio, and her grandmother Alma.
They were a pretty average family, but they were pretty busy with their jobs, school, and hobbies. Abuela Alma was a retired businesswoman, and was head of the house. Julieta was a nurse at the local hospital and enjoyed cooking.
Augustin was a contractor, Bruno worked as an insurance agent, Pepa was a meteorologist and happened to be a weather girl on the news, and Felix was a construction worker. Isabela was a third student in college, majoring in design, particularly flowers and plants.
Since she enjoyed growing them and arranging them she decided to be a florist when graduated. Dolores was also a college student, but was a second year and majored in technology. She was interesting designing headphones and earbuds.
Luisa was in her first year of college, and enjoyed boxing in her free time. Camillo went to the same high school as Mirabel, and was quite the actor. He was even part of the school drama club. And Antonio was a cute kid who was in kindergarten and knew a lot about animals.
Mirabel loved her family very much; however that couldn't be said the same about some members of her family. For some reason, Abuela Alma, Isabela, and Pepa saw Mirabel as a thorn in their eyes. Her parents and other family members treated her a little better, but could get pretty busy so she didn't get much attention.
The only ones she actually had good relationships with was Bruno and Antonio. While it did sting her at time, she tried to be grateful for what she had and tried to make the best of things.
Mirabel was sound asleep, when she was woken up by the sound of her phone alarm clock. Her eyes popped open, then she looked at her phone. It read 7:00, and she turned off the alarm. She groaned and yawned as she sat up, then rubbed her eyes.
She then grabbed her glasses from the nightstand and put them on. Mirabel then threw off the covers, put on her slippers and went to get ready for the day. She hurried to the bathroom, hoping there wouldn't be a line.
As she walked down the hallway she got hit with the sounds and smells of her casita. That's what she liked to call her house. She heard the sounds of her elders talking downstairs, and the smell of breakfast cooking.
When she got to the bathroom, she saw the door was wide open. She quickly got in, and shut the door. She washed her face, brushed her teeth, and combed her hair. Then there was a knock at the door.
"Are you almost done in there?" asked a voice.
Mirabel recognized it as Isabela's.
"I'll be out in second, Isabela." Mirabel replied.
After making sure she looked all right, she opened the bathroom door. She saw Isabela standing there in her pajamas, looking a little irritated.
"Buenos dias, Isabela."
"Yeah, just let me have the bathroom so I can get ready." Isabela remarked.
"Okay."
And Mirabel let her have it.
"Why couldn't she live in a dorm room?"
She went back to her room, and picked out her clothes for school. She chose a white blouse with pink butterflies and plants on it, blue jeans with purple butterflies, and pink slip on shoes. She then changed out of her white night dress, and got dressed.
Then she grabbed her brown backpack with butterflies on it, and went to go eat breakfast. As she went downstairs, she ran into Abuela Alma.
"Hola, Abuela." she greeted.
"Buenos dias, Mirabel." Abuela Alma replied, and she walked past her.
Mirabel just sighed, and made her way to the kitchen. Julieta, Augustin, Bruno, and Luisa were already there. When her parents saw her they smiled.
"Morning, mija did you sleep well?" Julieta asked.
"Si, what's for breakfast?"
"Huevos pericos."
Mirabel took a seat at the table next to Luisa and Bruno.
"Here's your plate, Luisa." said Augustin.
He handed her a plate full of food.
"Gracias, Papa." Luisa replied, then she started eating.
Mirabel was a little surprised to see how much she had. Luisa noticed this.
"Hey, I need to load up for training."
"Okay."
"So kid, you ready for another day?" Bruno wondered.
"Yes, Tio Bruno."
As Bruno got his coffee, Julieta served Mirabel. As Mirabel ate her breakfast, some others came into the kitchen. It was Pepa, Antonio, Camillo, Dolores, Felix, and Isabela. They all greeted each other, and sat down for breakfast.
"Hi, Mirabel." said Antonio, going up to her.
He smiled brightly at her. Mirabel smiled a little at him.
"Buenos dias, Antonio."
"Come on, mijo, it's time to eat." Pepa urged.
"Isabela could you give me a ride to school, por favor?" Dolores wondered.
"I have to be there a little early."
"No problemo." Isabela replied.
"Hey, Mirabel we better get going, or we'll be late for school." Camillo informed.
"Okay, I'm coming."
She got up from the table, and picked up her plate and mug. But as she was heading towards the sink, she accidentally bumped into Pepa. A little coffee that was left in the mug, accidentally got on Pepa's blouse.
"Oh my favorite blusa!"
"I'm sorry, Tia Pepa."
Then Pepa went into a little fit, and Felix tried to calm her down.
"Mi amor, calm down." he urged.
"Nice move, sis." Isabela sneered.
Mirabel just quickly put her dishes in the sink, and hurried out of the room. As she went to the front door, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around to see Bruno.
"Don't worry about it, Mirabel. She's always been a drama queen."
Mirabel smiled a little. And then Camillo came and the two left the casita.
The two walked down the street to the bus stop, and waited. A couple minutes later, the bus came, and the two boarded it. Camillo went and sat with his friends, while Mirabel found an empty seat. The bus rode away and into the city.
After riding for about thirty minutes, the bus got to the school. Camillo got out and continued to stay with his friends, while Mirabel got off and looked around for hers.
"Hey Mira." called a voice.
Mirabel looked and saw her two friends Valentina and Angela. Valentina had long curly black hair in a high ponytail, she wore a blue shirt, green skirt, and black shoes. Angela had short straight hair, and wore an orange t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers.
"Hola, guys." Mirabel greeted.
The girls then went into the school together.
"We've still got some time before homeroom starts." mentioned Valentina.
"Let's swing by the club."
"Good idea." Mirabel replied.
"Come on." said Angela.
Now this was where Mirabel's talent was. She and her friends were the members of the fashion club. She enjoyed designing different pieces of clothes, and then making them. In a spare classroom, the girls gathered around and took out their sketchbooks.
"So what have you thought of Valentina?" Mirabel asked.
Valentina opened her book, and showed off her sketches.
"Yesterday I designed these dresses."
"There beautiful. What do you think of these shirts?"
Angela then showed off her sketches.
"Those are very impressive." complimented Mirabel.
"Show us what you drew, Mira." Valentina urged.
Mirabel showed off the outfits she had designed. The two were impressed. The outfits looked like they should be in a fashion magazine.
"Those are asombrosa, Mirabel." complimented Angela.
"Si. Those must've taken you hours." added Valentina.
Mirabel smiled, it felt good to get praised about her work. Then the bell rang meaning it was time for students to report to homeroom.
"Well class awaits." Mirabel told her friends.
And they went to their classes.
School went on normally, and then lunch time came. The girls gathered up again, and found a table. They talked about their club, fashion, and school.
"Hey here comes the star of the estrella of the escuela." said Angela.
The girls looked up and saw Camillo walking in with his friends and some others.
"One of the stars at home too." Mirabel replied.
Angela and Valentina looked at each other sadly. They knew about Mirabel's home life.
"You're not a complete black sheep, Mira." comforted Valentina.
"Si, you're more of a dark gray one." Angela added.
Mirabel looked at her in disbelief.
"Okay, that sounded better in my head."
"It's okay, I know you're just trying to help."
"Why don't you just show them your pictures? I bet they'd be impressed." suggested Valentina.
Mirabel shook her head.
"I don't think a bunch of pictures are going to impress my family."
Seeing that their friend didn't want to talk about this subject anymore, they changed it.
The rest of the day went on like normal, and then it was time to go home. But both Mirabel and Camillo were staying late for their clubs. The girls decided to create their designs. They cut the fabrics, added designs, sewed them together, and created some new clothes.
Then they tried them on. Angela wore a lilac cotton shirt, Valentina had on a green dress, and Mirabel wore a shirt and skirt set.
"We could pass for models." squealed Angela.
"Yeah, we should really think about asking the school about putting on a fashion show." suggested Mirabel.
"Think they'd go for it?" wondered Valentina.
"Maybe."
Then they saw the time, it was time to get going home. Outside Camillo was already waiting for Mirabel.
"There you are. What took you?" he asked her.
"We were just finishing our meeting." Mirabel replied.
"Si, just ran a little over time." replied Angela.
After a little while, Bruno came to pick up his niece and nephew. And Angela and Valentina went home.
"So you guys have fun today?" Bruno asked as he drove home.
"Yeah school was good." Mirabel replied.
"You wouldn't believe what happened." Camillo told.
He then began going on about his play and acting skills. It went on till they got home. When Mirabel walked through the door, she was ready to go straight up to her room, when someone greeted her.
It was Antonio.
"Hi, Mirabel." he greeted happily.
She smiled at him.
"Hi, Antonio, how was school?"
"It was so much fun. How was your day?"
"It was nice. Why don't you go play now?"
"Okay."
And Antonio went off. Mirabel then made her way upstairs to her room. On her way to her bedroom, she overheard the sound of grunting. She followed the sound, and learned it was coming from Luisa's room.
Looking through the crack, she saw Luisa punching her punching bag. Then Mirabel went onto her room to get started on her work. First she did her homework, and then did more sketches.
About forty-five minutes later, there was a knock at her door.
"Come in." Augustin opened her door.
"Miraboo you ready for dinner?" he asked.
"Si, Papa. I'm coming."
She quickly closed her sketchbook, and followed her father. At the dinner table, the family mostly talked about their jobs, Isabela and Dolores' college classes, Luisa's upcoming boxing match, and Camillo's play.
No one really asked Mirabel about her day, but that wasn't anything new for her. Once dinner was finished, everyone went their own way. Mirabel decided to take her sketch book downstairs to the living room.
She watched a little TV, and when she thought of something that gave her inspiration, she quickly sketched it. As she continued to watch, she was startled to hear a voice call her name.
"Mirabel."
Mirabel turned quickly to see Abuela.
"Abuela."
She then gave her granddaughter a stern look.
"Much more productivity can happen when one doesn't waste their time with nonsense."
Then she walked off, leaving Mirabel to deal with her words. She hated when Abuela spoke to her like that, she was never that way with her siblings or cousins. Then she heard her mom's voice.
"Mama, why can't you be a little nicer to Mirabel?"
"She has to learn."
She was a little happy that her mom was trying to stand up for him, but it still strung a little. So she closed her book, turned off the TV, and went up to her room.
After she had a shower, and changed into her pajamas she got ready for bed. Before going to bed, she looked out her window at the clear sky.
"(Sighs), I wish things will change, someday." she hoped.
Then she got in bed, set her alarm, turned off the light and took off her glasses. At last she settled into her bed, and fell fast asleep.
