Once upon a time, A lovely princess named Snow Veronica was born in the Toonsville Kingdom. She had the color of a yellow sun, lips as pink as raspberries, and skin as white as the new-fallen snow-which how she got her name from her parents. Snow Veronica's brother died from an illness at the age of 13, so Prince Sneech from the other side of Toonsville Kingdom cared for her until the day Snow Veronica will be old enough to become the Princess of Royalty and rule Toonsville Kingdom on her own.
As the years passed, it was difficult for Prince Sneech to control the jealousy that swelled in his heart-especially when he thought of giving up being the Prince of Royalty and the rule of Toonsville Kingdom. "Why should Snow Veronica take Toonsville Kingdom from me?" he thought angrily. Prince Sneech demanded an answer from the magic mirror in his room: "Mirror, mirror, in my hand. Who is the best to rule the land?" A rainbow mist swirled over the surface of the mirror, then an image of Snow Veronica. A hollow voice replied to the prince, "Kind and happy and fair of face, Snow Veronica has the wisdom to rule with grace."
"Impossible!" hissed Prince Sneech. "I'm the best one to rule Toonsville Kingdom. What does Snow Veronica know about ruling a nation? Nothing!" Prince Sneech gazed out the window, wondering how she could possibly keep Toonsville Kingdom for himself. He spotted a servant, Boo Berry, cleaning a house for his master, Prince Rainbow Dash. Suddenly, a terrible plan
began to form in Prince Sneech's mind. He called Boo Berry and ordered him to come inside.
"I have a very important task for you," Prince Sneech told Boo Berry. "Take Snow Veronica deep into the woods to look for flowers. But you must not bring her back to Toonsville Kingdom. I want you to take her over the border to Wildland and leave her in the deepest, darkest part of the woods!" "Oh, no! Your majesty!" began Boo Berry. "I could never-" "Not another word," Prince Sneech interrupted sharply as she pointed to the door.
Boo Berry found Snow Veronica practicing her cheerleading in the castle garden. "W-would you like to pick wildflowers in the woods with me?" Boo Berry stammered. "Of course!" Snow Veronica replied. "That would very nice!" Snow Veronica followed Boo Berry deep into the woods, chatting and laughing as the friends gathered sweetly scented flowers. but with every step Boo Berry took, a terrible feeling of dread grew in his heart. At last, he could bear it no more.
"Snow Veronica, you must never return to Toonsville Kingdom!" exclaimed Boo Berry. "Huh? Why? What's the matter?" Snow Veronica asked. "Your brother, Prince Sneech, told me to leave you in the woods of Wildland!" Boo Berry said urgently. " But I could never do that. Never!" "Oh, no!" Snow Veronica cried. "What am I going to do?" "I know a safe place where you can hide," Boo Berry replied. "A house at the edge of Toonsville Kingdom. No one lives there- I don't think anyone even knows about it except for me. Let's hurry-the prince must not know I've disobeyed him!"
Snow Veronica and Boo Berry ran to the border between Toonsville Kingdom and Wildland. "There it is!" whispered Boo Berry, pointing to a house. "You'll be safe there." He gave Snow Veronica a hug before hurrying home. Snow Veronica had never felt so scared in all her life. She cautiously walked up to the lonely house. "Hello? Hello?" she called. But there was no answer. A tear slipped down her cheek as she realized how alone she was. As a pelting rain began to fall, Snow Veronica dashed into the house to escape the storm.
"Who are you? And what are you doing here?" asked a voiced from the shadows. Snow Veronica tried not to cry. "My brother, Prince Sneech, has sent me away," she replied. "I have no home and no no place to go." Snow Veronica heard rustling and murmuring. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she saw seven pairs of eyes blinking at her. Finally, a red haired man stepped forward. "We've decided you can stay here," The man declared. "We're the Seven Jhonen Vasquez Characters. I'm Jhonen Vasquez, and this is my friends, Johnny, Squee, Filler Bunny, Devi, Dib Membrane, and Gaz Membrane-but we have no one to look after us." Snow Veronica beamed. "Oh, thank you so much!" she cried. "I would love to look after you!"
Snow Veronica and The Seven Jhonen Vasquez Characters soon learned to take care of one another. Snow Veronica kept Jhonen Vasquez's Room- sweeping, moping, dusting, and tidying-while Jhonen Vasquez, Johnny the homicidal maniac, Squee, Filler Bunny, Devi, Dib Membrane and Gaz Membrane make some of the comics that were good to read. Before long, they were having very happy life.
Back at the castle, Prince Sneech was certain that he would rule Toonsville Kingdom now that Snow Veronica was hopelessly lost in Wildland. He decided to consult the magic mirror again. "Mirror, mirror, in my hand. Who is the best to rule the land?" he asked. The same rainbow mist swirled over the mirror. And then the mirror repiled: "Snow Veronica is safe, in a happy place. When she returns, she'll rule with grace." "How can this be?" Prince Sneech snarled as an image of Snow Veronica appeared in the mirror. "I won't allow it!"
As the prince glared at the mirror, he was reminded of Snow Veronica's fondness for yellow cherries. He began to think of another terrible plan. Prince Sneech raced to the deepest dungeons, where he mixed a colorless, tasteless potion. He dipped the smallest, yellowest cherry into the brew. "One bite and Snow Veronica will be fall into enteral faint!" he laughed. For good measure, the prince disguised himself as an old peddler man with sliver hair and a dark cloak. "She'll never recognize me now!" Prince Sneech proclaimed.
Prince Sneech hurried through the woods to the hidden house. He found Snow Veronica alone, humming happily as she tidied Jhonen Vasquez's room. He rapped on the door. "Bright, sweet cherries!" the prince called. "My favorite!" exclaimed Snow Veronica as she brought the yellow cherry to her lips. "I love cher-" Suddenly, Snow Veronica fell to the floor. It was just as the prince had hoped-one taste, and Snow Veronica was lost in a deep, dreamless faint!
By the time The Seven Jhonen Vasquez Characters returned to his room with comics for the day, the prince was safely back at the castle. "What are you doing the floor, silly?" Jhonen Vasquez asked. But Snow Veronica did not answer. "Snow Veronica? Snow Veronica!" Jhonen Vasquez and his friends did everything they could to wake Snow Veronica. They nudged her and kissed her, patted her face, and banged on pots and pans to make noise. But she did not stir.
With heavy hearts, Jhonen Vasquez and his friends realized that Snow Veronica was under an enchantment. There was nothing they could do to help her. Sadly, they made a bed of flowers and trailing vines in a clearing near the house. They laid Snow Veronica upon this bower, where the sun would shine upon her and the cool breezes would whisper in her ears. For many long days and nights Jhonen Vasquez attended the sleeping Snow Veronica in hopes that she would wake-but she never did.
Back at the castle, Prince Sneech began to plan a royal party to celebrate becoming Prince of Royalty and Prince of Toonsville Kingdom. He misled Snow Veronica's parents by saying that Snow Veronica had run away rather than take her place as ruler. It seems certain that Toonsville Kingdom soon fall to Prince Sneech's wicked plan.
But the mirror still knew the truth. Whenever Prince Sneech passed by its shiny surface, an image of the sleeping Snow Veronica bloomed across it. the guilt deep of Prince Sneech's heart was soon entangled with fear. The fearful prince had no choice. "You! And you! Clover all the mirrors!" he shouted at Snow Veronica's parents. "I want no reflections in this castle!"
Soon the mirrors were shrouded with thick, velvet drapes. No reflections could be been-and Snow Veronica's fate was hidden from all who lived in the castle.
It was soon time for the royal coronation. All the people of the Toonsville Kingdom and neighboring lands were in attendance, including brave Prince Rainbow Dash and his servant, Boo Berry. They gathered in the ballroom awaiting Prince Sneech's arrival. The prince, dressed in his finest suit, prepared for his royal entrance. Majestically he swept into the ballroom, ready to greet his new subjects.
Instead, he found Snow Veronica's image surrounding him on every mirror in the ballroom! "Who removed the drapes? Who?" shrieked the prince. "I did!" cried Boo Berry. "I thought-for the coronation-" "Never mind that!" interrupted Prince Rainbow Dash. "What happened to Snow Veronica? Where is she?"
Prince Sneech could keep his terrible secret no longer. "She's in an enchanted faint at the of the woods!" he sobbed. "I've done a terrible thing. I wanted to rule Toonsville Kingdom all by myself!" "What's important now is that we save Snow Veronica," Prince Rainbow Dash said firmly. "I know the way to the house, master!" Boo Berry spoke up."Then you must take us there at once!"
The group raced through the woods, with Prince Rainbow Dash and Prince Sneech following right behind Boo Berry. When they arrived at the house, they found Snow Veronica sleeping as peacefully as she had appeared in the mirror, with Jhonen Vasquez and his friends surrounding her in sorrow. "Oh, Snow Veronica," whispered Prince Sneech, "I am so sorry for everything I've done. More than anything I wish I could undo it all." As he apologized, the prince embraced Snow Veronica in a heartful hug as tears fell down his face.
And suddenly, Snow Veronica spits out the bit of the poison yellow cherry and her eyes opened! Prince Sneech's sincere apology and true regret has reversed his evil wishes. "What happened?" Snow Veronica asked sleepily. The crowd clapped laughed with joy! "I did something very wicked," Prince Sneech confessed to Snow Veronica. "I thought that I would be the best prince-and I wanted it so badly that I put you into a deep sleep to make it happened. I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart." Snow Veronica hugged the prince. "I forgive you!" she exclaimed.
Later that day, there was much rejoicing in Toonsville Kingdom as Snow Veronica was the crowned Princess of Royalty. "I am so grateful to all my friends," the new princess announced. "To Boo Berry for helping me, to Prince Rainbow Dash for finding me, and to Jhonen Vasquez and his friends who have cared for me these many days. And to my brother, Prince Sneech, who overcame his bad feelings to save me. I hope that you will all help me rule Toonsville Kingdom, as I know that you are all worthy of the task." And so it was that Princess Snow Veronica took the throne, joined by all her friends just as she was always meant to do!
