Accidental Serving
Chapter 1
Author Notes: *Sees date* this is not going as planned at all. October crept on me with no mercy. So here I am scrambling to get these stories and one shots done. Ahem, so it's time for deltarune~
I don't own it, love it immensely, though we'll be diving into chapter 1 for this one, take note another is happening in the near future, but uh...I need time for that. (edit: surprise surprise this one shot is now getting split up into parts *sighs*) Let's go.
3rd P.O.V
"Yes yes ma chérie, that's it." Mako pursed her lips as she frosted in slow, graceful strokes. It was a three-tier cake that was just assembled after being baked in the oven. Her mentor watched on with anticipated eyes. Pride blooming deep beneath his apron.
She had been working under as the baker's apprentice for many months now. And she found herself determined to put all of his lessons into practice. Her friends had encouraged her to ask for training. All of her past attempts of desserts were atrocious, and desperately wanted to improve.
And thankfully was accepted to work under him. Each day she would see how he worked his craft. Cakes, brownies, pies, cookies, there was not a pastry that didn't leave his kitchen without looking absolutely perfect.
So she toiled, taking in his sentimental lessons for improvement. This was the first cake he was allowing her to fully decorate, so she had to do her best. "Careful now. ne pas trop utiliser or else it will make the cake too heavy and uneven."
Even with him constantly shifting between French and English she was able to listen and adjust. With a deep breath, she narrowed her eyes, taking the piping bag she had been using off. With a swallow she picked up one of his frosting knives, carefully spreading it evenly along the top and sides.
"Good good! très bon travail." Things were going well so far. "Hm?" But then the both of them stopped as the sound of sharp pitched rings hit their ears. Mako tilted her head as her boss spun his way to the phone.
Answering it without missing a beat. "Bonjour! How can I help you?" The seconds are filled with a curious silence as she sees his expression change. From happy to worried. "Oui. Uh huh. Of course. I understand, I'll be right there. Au revoir~"
He met her gaze as he hung up. A smile was still there on his lips, but it was small, not as cheerful. It spelled bad news. "Everything ok boss?" His mouth twitched up a tad more as he played with his mustache.
"It seems there's a bit of an emergency at the castle. So on m'a demandé to go and help. Cela vous dérangerait watching things for me?" Her brows furrowed as she tried mentally translating.
Only to nod when she finally got it. "Yeah. I can put this in the fridge so when you get back you can finish decorating." At that he frowned, but it resembled more of a pout. "Non non. I want you to finish the decorations. You've been doing such a beautiful job." At that she cringed. No, no she wasn't.
"But sir-" All she's been doing was follow his instructions. The last thing she wanted to do was try and decorate this cake, only for it to look awful. This was supposed to go out on the shelf for tonight's halloween party. It had to look perfect-and unfortunately for her, she hasn't mastered perfection.
However before she could argue, the head chef shook his head. "I command that you finish ma chérie. In fact I want this done as well as one creation of your own done by the time I get back." At that Mako's blue buttoned eyes stared in horror.
He couldn't be serious. "Sir I've never made anything good before-let alone without you!" All within a time limit too. "J'insiste. This is your chance to make something vraiment le vôtre." At that she deflated. This WAS technically what she wanted.
This is what she had been working and training for, but she didn't feel ready. "If you wish for help, n'hésitez pas to go through my recipe books for inspiration. Ciao!" All too quick, he grabbed his coat, rushing out.
"Shit..." With a nervous sigh, she went to work. Glancing between the cake and the various decorations in bowls laid out on the table before her. "Ok, the frosting foundation is done...maybe some red dye?" He never got the chance to tell her how the cake was supposed to look.
Just that it was for tonight. So she immediately went through her boss's books. "Splatter cakes are in right now-maybe?" Nibbling her lip she turned away as she took the small vial of red food coloring. Haphazardly flinging it onto the white frosting.
With one peeked open eye, she found it didn't look too hideous. "What else do I put on the cake? Maybe some licorice?" She liked the red ones and twisted them into a braided crown, placing it gently on top.
It looked cool, stirring up a little bit of confidence. "Too much red." But now she gave it a critical glance as she looked towards her selection of decorations. "Maybe some blue hard candy eyes?" With a hum she went about covering an entire tier with the little orbs.
"Too much red and white now..." Her gaze shifted to the dark chocolate spiders and shrugged. Placing them all on the lowest tier. And to top it off she took some orange and black sprinkles, dropping them around the spiders and eyes.
It...didn't look bad. She wasn't sure if it was something her boss would've wanted but he made her do this. Certainly a professional could fix it. "There. It's in the fridge and now...I gotta make something else before he gets back." There was no way to know how long he would take.
No matter what he would be here before the party. So if he was running late than he would take a few hours. The problem was how big was this 'emergency' of his. Because the darkener was punctual.
"Heeeeeeey Mako! Sup!" Blinking she turned towards the entrance of the shop. Leaving the kitchen she found a group of familiar smiling faces. "Hey! If it isn't my favorite customers~" Kris, Susie and Ralsei. The three heroes, and troublemakers.
The purple skinned monster sniffed. "Something smells good. Need any taste testing?" She huffed out a laugh. "No not this time. Thanks though." She tsked, but didn't look TOO disappointed.
It helped that Kris silently offered her a cookie from their inventory. "Not that I don't appreciate your visit but what are you guys doing here? The party's not till later." She was running out of time.
