prologue

CAROLINE GRASPED HER blanket in anger as she had another fight with Alaric who refused to let her see her daughters but thankfully they both decided that they wanted to stay with her tonight. She closed her eyes as she focused on their steady heartbeat as it was soothing her.
Anger fills her up because, how dare he accused her multiple times that she is not their mother. She is their mother. She carried them in her womb, she gave birth to them, she has every right to distinguish them as her daughters. Because no matter what he or anyone says those little girls are her daughters.
Her anger washed away as she heard groans signaling that the two girls were waking up. Caroline smiled to herself as she sat up on her bed, glancing at the door. She heard light footsteps and chuckles heading her way.
Caroline snaps her head to the left as the door creaks a bit. She lets out a chuckle as two heads peak through, "Yes?"
The two little girls squeal as they run and jump into their mother's bed. They both wrapped their tiny arms around her. Caroline immediately embraced the warmth. Josie gazes her eyes up, "Momma, can me and Lizzie sleep here with you?"
Caroline nodded, "Always my little one."
Josie's eyes brighten as she lets out a happy squeal. The two girls laid on Caroline's left side, as she made sure they were comfortable and were covered with a blanket.
Lizzie nudged her mother, "Can you tell us the story of the princess and prince?"
Caroline laughed; they loved stories about the 'princess' which was her, and her 'prince charming' who was Klaus. God, she missed him, and she wonders whether he does too after so many years apart. Her thoughts were interrupted by Josie's plea to, "Please, momma."
Caroline nodded in response to their request, causing the girls to shriek with delight. Caroline sat up on the edge of the bed, "Okay, my tiny butterflies. They initially met in this manner."
The girls looked up at the mother, as she shifted closer to them, "The princess was laying on her bed, feeling sick and hopeless. Her moments of the past came rushing into her mind and she started to cry at the fact that she might never get to do what she wanted to do in life. But then," Caroline let out a little chuckle as the girls leaned forward to her in anticipation.
"The prince arrived standing at the door, he helped cure the princess with a special kind of magic. He held her across his chest holding her and telling her all the beautiful things of life. Of how much beautiful music, foods, and cities there are to discover and the princess wanted it all. At the end the princess was tired so she fell asleep in the arms of her prince feeling safe and the next morning there was a beautiful, shiny diamond bracelet waiting to be used."
Caroline closed her eyes and reflected on how he had saved her when he didn't have to. She was a teenager with little concept of life at the time, and her beliefs and values were black and white. She shook her head and looked at her girls.
She saw how much admiration and love their eyes carried for her and simply smiled and kissed each of their foreheads. She snuggled into the bed holding them as their breathing became light as they fell asleep.
She shut her eyes as darkness consumed her, she hoped tomorrow and for the rest of eternity her life would be at ease.

"Momma is sleeping, Lizzie, we can't wake her up."
"But Jo, why is the room a different color?"
Caroline groaned as the sudden brightness of the room began to burn her eyes. She itched to get a better feeling as she slowly opened her eyes as her daughters came to view. As they smiled at her. Caroline kissed their cheeks, "Morning my little butterflies."
Caroline furrowed her brows as they did not respond but pointed to the room. She turned in complete shock finding herself in her childhood bedroom. She stood up, and made sure her daughter stayed in the room as she flashed through her old home to find out she was alone.
Was she dreaming? Caroline heard a buzz, she turned to her nightstand as Lizzie handed her the old phone she used to have. She kissed Lizzie on the forehead, "Thank you my angel."
Caroline grabbed the phone as she glanced at the screen. It was text saying, Elena still feels bad about Stefan leaving with Klaus, so she and Damon could live, so GIRLS DAY?
What was Bonnie talking about that was years ago? Caroline shook her head as she was going to reply when the date on her phone appeared.
Her eyes widened, she was in the past?
The disbelief settle in as she observed the room quietly muttering, "What the fuck?"
She shuts her eyes turning to her daughters who glanced at her in confusion. Josie got off the bed, "Momma you okay?"
Caroline mustered out a stifle nod, "Yea. Are you two hungry?"
They both nodded as they headed downstairs as she made them breakfast. She plates their food as she sat down with them as the two girls ate.
Caroline sighs, she is in the past, does she have change certain events?
A chance to redo certain things or does she just run away with her daughters, and live another life?
How does she explain to the two girls that they are in the past or what excuse is she supposed to say that she has two daughters now?
She sighs as maybe for now, she can play things quietly and let things play out the way they need to?
She shook her head in denial, but there are many lives that she can save that did not deserve to die.
Fear sprinkled on her spine. Her and her daughter travel back in time, being in the past required a lot of magic to do that. Did the witches or any supernatural creature feel the magic of their arrival?
Her daughters were siphoners. Hated by many witches because of their kind. Her and them being in the past complicates things way much more, because if they were brought here, then what exactly should be changed?
Caroline knew that this moment going forward the safety of her girls came first, everyone else came second. She eyes the little brunette and blonde munching on the waffles, "My little butterflies…"
They glanced at her as Caroline sighs, "How do we feel about playing heroes?"
Lizzie beamed up, "Mommy, can we get superhero suits?"
Caroline nodded, as she thought, why not? She sighs as first she needs to break up with Tyler first. Guilts settled into her as he was her first love but they were just not meant to be. Just as her and Stefan were better off as friends.
Josie eyes her mother, "Momma, can we have a picnic today?"
Caroline sighs, as that last thing she needs but nods anyway. She has things to figure out and what should be changed or not. A picnic can ease her a bit.
