Chapter 2
Alex and her dogs was running down the path that she run nearly every morning, music in one ear the other free to hear if something happened.
She had just started the run when she heard something from behind her it sounded like footstep, with a quick glance down to her dogs showed that they too had heard the footstep.
Maybe it was because of her uncle being a police inspector or maybe she really shouldn't read and watch so many mystery shows and books, but Alex grow a bit worried and quicken her steps as she know that just around that tree was a small nearly invisible path where she could hid and see who or even if there was someone behind her.
So there she stood waiting with baited breath on what? She didn't know it could be no-one and it could be an animal it would not be the last time she had gotten spooked by a deer.
But this morning she was right just a few minutes after that she and the dogs had hidden in the small path come a young man around her age running with headphones in his ears and looking around for what she guess was her, the thing was she did recognized him, she put her hand up to cover her mouth as she didn't want him to hear her giggling.
The man stood there looking around scratching his short nearly snagged brown hair, he could have sworn he had seen her, but where was she now?
Alex stood stock still she was waiting for the man to turn around so that he would have his back against her, she would then jump out and hopefully scare him, he had done the same with her a few times and she would get her revenge today!
Sirius looked up at his mistress and then at the man who he know was really nice and did give good ear scratches and he really wanted his ears scratched now, so with that he slipped away before Alex could react and bounced over to the man happily barking.
"Hey there Sirius," the man said and started to scratch the spaniel's ears "Where is your mommy?"
Sirius just tried to lick the man's face as an answer.
Alex stood and looked up for a few seconds before she with Remus at her heels walked up to the man and dog.
"Traitor," she muttered to the happy dog not really mad at all, she know that Sirius loved to have his ear scratched while Remus was more of a tummy scratcher.
Sirius just barked a bit more.
"So you were trying to scare me?" the man laughed his brown eyes shining with laugh.
"Yeah and I would have scared you, if not for the crazy dog," Alex said back smiling brightly.
"Nah I would have found you," the man said
Alex laughed at that and told the man that he could dream on and that she was still the unbeaten hide-n-seek champion of her school.
Sirius and Remus looked up at the two human who was talking and both dogs yawn, they were soon bored of this and started to chase each other as a way to have some fun.
"Sirius! Remus!" Alex called to the dogs "I think it would be best if we start our run or they will run off themselves."
The man nodded and both started to jog after the dogs who had stopped and was watching them, Alex and the man jogged a bit in silence but soon she was bored of it and turn to the man with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"Catch me if you can!" she called and broke in to a run and left the man a few meters behind her, the man just laughed and quicken his step into a run as well in an attempt to catch up to her, Sirius and Remus who had no problem keeping the same pace as Alex was happy it was rare that they got to run in the forest like this.
It was all going so well until a root that Alex didn't see tripped her and send her flying, landing in a not all too elegant heap on the ground.
"Owww," Alex groan
Her friend rushed over to her to help her up.
"Are you hurt?" he asked worried
Alex with some help from her friend got up to her feet a bit unsteadily, she had scrapped up her legs from the uneven ground and blood was mixing with the dirt and pine needles, she had a cut on her arm from a sharp stone and dirt all over her clothes and face which also had a few bleeding scratches.
"Am ok," She managed to say, everything hurt but she know that most was from the hard ground so just soft tissue pain nothing too bad and it would go away soon.
Sirius and Remus was at her side worried about their mommy licking her legs to comfort her.
"It's okay, boys," she said softly
But when she tried to take a step the foot that had got stuck in the root wouldn't take her weight and Alex was once again closed to fall thankfully she was saved by her friend.
"Can you put any weight on it?" he asked
Alex tried again and found that she could put a bit of weight on her foot, so with the help from her friend they managed to get back to her cottage where he left her to get clean up, but not before she promised to 1) call the local GP and 2) call or text him if she needed anything.
She promise and gave him a hug as a thanks before he had to go or he would be late for work, he run off but with the promise that he would return later that day.
When her friend had gone and after that she had rested for a bit, did Alex decided to hobbled to the bathroom to get clean up, it stung like heck but after a few chosen word and tears so was she clean and dressed in a pair of shorts so not to aggrieved the scratches and a t-shirt, she hobbled back to her chair in the living room.
With a big sigh she looked longing into the kitchen, she wish she had made a cup of tea before she sat down and she know that she had to call the GP too.
"I will just rest for a few minutes then I will call Dr Green," Alex said mostly to herself and closed her eyes.
A paw hitting her uninjured leg made her open one eye and looked down at the tail wagging Sirius who looked at her with a big doggy grin.
"Okay, Okay I will call the doc now," Alex mumbled and grumbled something about Sirius being too much like him, she dialled the number and after a few minutes waiting.
"Hello this is Sharon at Doctor Green's office, how can I help you today?" a voice said happily
"Hello, this is Alexandria Reid and I have hurt my ankle so I was wondering if Doctor Green had the time to look at it?" Alex asked
"I will check please hold a moment," Sharon said, the line went quiet for a few moment "Yes he has an opening in an hour time, is that okay with you?"
"Yes that would be great," Alex said and by accident moved her hurt ankle a sharp pain stabbed her and she hiss in pain. "Is it possible for the Doctor to come home to me, I don't know if I can walk to his practice."
Sharon said that she would check and then said that it was sadly not possible, Alex thanks her and said that she would call someone to help her and thanks Sharon again before she ended the call.
Alex looked at the clock and sighed, who could she call? Her uncle worked at this time, her aunt also at work, her friend well she would call him but she didn't want to make him leave his work anymore then she wanted to make her uncle and aunt leaving their work. She was still thinking of her problem when the doorbell rang.
"Come in!" she called from her chair wondering who it could be.
Soon footsteps could be heard and her Uncle poked his head in to the room.
"Hello sweetie," he said smiling then he saw the state of his niece's leg "What happened to you?"
"I took a bit of a tumble in the forest," his niece answered "What are you doing here?"
John told her that he had forgot to ask if she was free to watch Betty the next weekend as he and Sarah was going away on a small trip for the day, so he thought he would just pop in and ask before he had to go to work.
"I will be happy to watch Betty," Alex said smiling "Ehh could you maybe help me? I have a doctor appointment in about 15 minutes but I can't get there with my leg, could I hitch a ride with you?"
John nodded and helped her up and into the car, the short drive to the GP took not many minutes but would have taken a lot long for Alex if she didn't have the help.
"Thanks Uncle John," She said and with some help from her uncle she arrived at the doctor's.
John waited with her until that she had with the help from him got on to the examination bed.
"Okay, I or your aunt will call you later tonight to hear how you are okay," he said and kissed her on the forehead before he left for his work.
"Okay Uncle John," Alex called after him.
Alex had to wait for a few minutes before the doctor entered the room.
"So what the matter with you lassie," he said in a slight Scottish accent.
"I was out with my dogs and a friend jogging," Alex started to tell what had happened "and well I didn't see a root on the ground and tripped on it and well fell down."
The doctor nodded and ask if she could take of her shoe, which Alex did with some discomfort, Doctor Green took her swollen ankle in his hands and started examine it, Alex was sure that he tried to be gentle but she couldn't stop the hiss of pain when Doctor Green would twist the ankle a bit too much.
"Sorry lassie," he would say at every hiss
After what felt like an hour her ankle was let go and the doctor sat down behind his desk.
"It is just a sprain nothing serious," he said "I would recommend a few days of rest and then you will be fine again. I also think a support bandage would be some help so I will call in Nurse Green she is a wiz with bandage, if you could wait here a moment."
Doctor Green disappeared out and a few minutes later an older lady poked her head in.
"Sprain ankle?" She asked also in the same slight Scottish accent as the doctor.
Alex nodded.
"Well we will soon fix that lassie," Nurse Green said smiling like a kind grandmother.
And soon was Alex's ankle wrapped and with a pair of borrowed crutches she was send home with strict orders of rest for at least a week and no worst then a short walk, the crutches was only for two days and she would return them when she had the time.
It took her nearly half an hour to get back home, where she was meet by two very happy dogs jumping around her feet.
"Okay I am happy to see you two too," She said laughing and reached into the big plastic container shaped as a dog and took out two dog treats for Sirius and Remus who as soon as they got them they were happy and calmed down.
Alex hobbled into the kitchen to start on her lunch lucky for her it was just some leftover from the day before, she would worry about dinner later.
Alex spend the rest of the day just resting on her large sofa watching tv shows, she did let the dogs out and would later in the evening take them for a very short walk. She was just about to decide if she could cook anything or if she should order take away when a knock on the door before said door open and in pop her friend.
"Hello," He called
"Hello come on in, am in the living room," Alex called back "And watch the mutts!"
Her friend walked in and sat down beside her on the large sofa, placing a bag on the table.
"I wanted to see if you needed anything and thought that maybe you would like some food," he said smiling
"Oh you are a god send my friend," She answered grinning
Soon the small table was filled with containers of different food like sweet and sour pork, chow mein and crispy duck and a few other too, cans of soda was there as well.
"What should we watch?" Alex asked
"What do you have?" her friend said "Nothing too girly please."
Alex just poked out her tongue.
"What about this," she said and held up the new series of Father Brown.
"Yes I have wanted to watch that," he said "Should I put it in?"
Alex gave him the DVD and after a few moment he sat back beside her again with a can of soda in one hand and a plate of food in his other hand which he gave to her before he too sat down with food and drink.
"How's the ankle?" He asked
"Sprain," was the answer "I have to rest it for a few days, so we will have to wait a week or two before I can beat you at racing."
"Ha ha ha," her friend laughed mockingly "I will have you know that I was in the lead."
Alex laughed and told her friend in his dreams.
Soon the only thing that was heard was eating and the show on the telly.
"I never really liked that Mallory bloke," Alex said "He feel is too condescending to Father Brown."
"I know what you mean," her friend said leading back on the sofa after taken the last sip of his soda. "I mean I get that it can be irritating that Brown helps him, it can be if civilian try to help, but we try to listen to them and be at least polite."
"True," Alex agreed and sat back also.
Remus and Sirius looked at their human and then at the door and back again to Alex.
"Oh right," Alex said and started to get up but fell down again with a hiss of pain as she had put a bit too much weight on her bad foot.
"Need any help?" Her friend asked
Alex just nodded, and with some help from her friend she was soon up and jumping to the door that lead to her garden.
"Come on boys," she called "just the garden tonight am afraid."
Both dogs didn't seemed to mind much as they rushed out and started chasing each other, Alex and her friend went after them laughing at the antic of the dogs.
The friend picked up a few of the tennis balls that was lying on a garden table and started to throw them to the dogs who both catch them and brought them back to the humans, they did this for almost an hour.
Alex with the help from her friend got back to the sofa.
"Could you fetch some pain killer?" Alex asked as the ankle was starting to hurt more.
Her friend nodded and disappeared out to the kitchen to return a few minutes later with a glass of water and two pain killers.
Alex quickly swallowed the pills and thanked her friend.
"Wanna watch something else?" she asked
"Sure what do you have?" Her friend answered
Alex gave him a DVD disc, it was a new comedy movie.
The DVD was put in the player and the friend sat down beside his friend.
The movie ended but no one was watching, around the middle of movie had the pain killers started to work and Alex had fallen asleep resting her head on her friends shoulder and he didn't have the heart to wake her, and not soon after had he too fallen asleep resting his head on Alex's head both smiling.
A/N: So this is the second chapter, can anyone guess who the friend is?
