Chapter 3
Alex stood outside her cottage waiting for Jamie, they were going to the fair in the next village, and Jamie had asked her the past weekend if she wanted to go with him, which she had been happy to say yes to.
So now she was just waiting for him to arrive, she looked at her clock and saw that it was still a few minutes before he would arrive. She looked up at the clear blue sky a few fluffy clouds was drifting by but no rain clouds and there were also next to no wind, so this day would be a fun one.
Just as Alex started to worry that something had happened to make Jamie not coming she saw his dark grey car, the car stopped and it had barely done that when Alex jumped in.
"Hello Jamie," she said smiling
"Hello Alex;" she got in returned "I didn't kept you waiting too long I hope?"
Alex told him that it was okay, and with that they were on their way to the Fair.
"So are you looking forward to the fair?" Jamie asked as he started to drive
"Yes, I love fairs," Alex said smiling big "I always win at the throwing booths."
Jamie laughed and said that he would like to see that, which made Alex poke her tongue out at him and ask if he thought he could do better, which Jamie just smirked at her as if he know he could do better than her at throwing things to win weird prizes.
They drove in silence not a weird one just a nice one.
"How is the mutts?" Jamie asked after a while
"They are good," Alex said "They do miss you."
Jamie had been working long hours the past week, the case he and his boss had been trying to solve had been a hard one.
"Well I am free this weekend," he said "So do you want to take a hike tomorrow with the mutts? I have heard there are a castle ruin a few miles from your house."
Alex smiled and said that that sounded great and she would pack some food for them, Jamie smiled and asked in a light teasing way if she would make those tasty cupcakes like the last time he had been over at her place to ask her to the fair.
"If you really want pup cakes," Alex said grinning remembering how Jamie had taken the wrong cupcake, not the caramel ones instead he had taken one of the dogs liver and banana cupcakes. "I can make you some more, do you rather have the liver banana or I can make salmon blueberry instead."
Jamie laughed back at her.
"They looked the same," he said "And they stood beside each other how would I to know that one was for the mutts and the other was normal tasty caramel filled goodness. You Alexandrina are evil for not warning me."
"One had a clear tag saying caramel and the other was in no paper by the side of the dogs' bowls," she pointed out "I will see if I have something tasty for you okay, can't have you without your cupcakes now can we."
They continued talking and joking with each other until they could see the first signs of the fair.
Jamie parked the car and they got out.
"So what did you want to do first?" Jamie asked
"I don't know let look around first," Alex said
So they did just that, they walked around looking at all the booths, tasting the free samples.
The first contest booth were you could win a prize, teddies in different sizes, was a throw the ball and knock down bottle sort of game.
"Want me to win you a teddy?" Jamie asked
"I think it is I who will win the teddy," Alex said
"Is that a challenge?" Jamie asked grinning
The only answer he got was the ball that Alex throw which nearly knocked the bottle tower down.
In the end neither one of them won the teddy but they had fun.
They played a few more booths and Jamie did win a few things, as did Alex.
They had just put the stuff in Jamie's car so that they didn't have carry around with them.
"So what do you want to do now?" Alex asked at the same time her stomach started to growl
"How about food?" Jamie said teasingly as his stomach growl at the word food.
"I could go for some food," she agreed "What do you fancy?"
Jamie shrugged his shoulders as into say he didn't know, so the couple decide to just walk around to see what the fair had in food way.
"That was nice," Jamie said as he took the last bite of his cheese and bacon burger
"I agree," Alex said and popped a chip in her mouth
Jamie got a mischievous spark in his eye as he nicked a couple of chips from Alex's plate.
"Hey that was mine!" Alex called out laughing not really minded as she was full already
"Do you want them back?" Jamie said with the chips in his mouth "Come and get them."
Alex turn and for a second she looked like she was going to take one of the chips from Jamie but then she changed her mind and smeared his ketchup on his nose instead which lead to them both starting to laugh as they cleared the table they had been sitting at.
"So what do you want to do now?" she asked as they walk around again
"I have no idea just walk around a bit and see if we find something fun," Jamie said
And that was what they did, they meet a few people they know and talk for a bit, they tried a few more booths and won in some and lost in some but had a great time, they even tried a few different food and drinks.
They had both been looking at the merry-go-arounds that was at the fair but neither of them felt like going on them just yet.
"I just have to nip to the loo," Jamie said and jogged off
Alex looked after him smiling as just before Jamie was at the que to the loo he turned around and waved to her with a funny face.
"Alex!" a voice called out and suddenly something small collided into her.
Alex looked down and saw her little cousin Betty hugging her around the waist.
"Hello there Betty," She said and looked around to see if she could see her uncle and aunt anywhere "Where is your parents? Have you escaped them?"
Just then a lightly panting Uncle John appeared looking around worried, he turn and saw not only his daughter but also his niece and he let out a big breath of relief.
"Elizabeth Jessica Barnaby what have mummy and I told you about running off like that?" he scolded her
"Sorry daddy, I just saw Alex and wanted to say hi," Betty said and looked like a sad puppy as she know that would melt her daddy's heart and he wouldn't be mad at her anymore.
Uncle John sighed and ruffled his daughter's hair before he turn his attention to his niece.
"So you have found the fair too," he said "Having fun?"
Alex grin and told her uncle that she had very much enjoyed the fair, Aunt Sarah joined them and after having hugged Alex as a hello she too scolded Betty a bit for running off.
"So are you here alone?" Aunt Sarah asked
"No I am here with a friend," Alex said
They talked for a few more minutes until that Betty started to grow bored and wanted to go ride some of the rides and for her daddy to win a big teddy for her, so the Barnaby family said their goodbye and ask if Alex wanted to come to them later that week for a small get together, which she did.
Alex waved goodbye to them, and looked around to see if Jamie was near which he wasn't, but then again the que to the loo could be long.
Alex had wandered of not too far from the loo so that Jamie would see her when he was back, she stood looking at people trying to win a giant chocolate bar, she and Jamie had tried it before but it was near impossible to win, but it was fun more fun actually to watch people try and fail to win the giant candy bar.
"I want the chocolate now!" a bratty kid scream at its parents who had just spend nearly ten quid on the game.
Alex tried her best to not laugh loud when she heard the spoiled child being dragged away still screaming, she however stopped laughing when she felt someone bumping into her just a bit too hard for it to be an accident.
"Hello fine looking," said the person who had bumped into her "Want me to win you a chocolate?"
Alex turn and saw a guy with short blondish brown hair smiling.
"No thanks," she said politely but a bit stiff as she didn't felt comfortable with the guy.
"Aww don't be like that babes," the guy said and winked at her "Let me win some chocolate for you."
Alex tried to ignore the guy but it was hard as he kept talking to her and moving closer to her, she would move a few steps to the side and the guy would move right after her.
"Could you please leave me alone," she hissed to him "I am waiting for someone."
"Sure you are," the guy said "But I am better company, I would never leave a pretty little thing like you all alone."
Alex felt more and more uncomfortable and a bit annoyed as no one tried to help her, she also felt that as long as he didn't put his hands on her she didn't want to hurt him, she had tried to call her Uncle but he had not heard the phone or he may have left the phone home.
"Come on babes," the guy whined like a small child "you know you want me."
He was just about to grab her when a pair of arms wrapped around Alex's waist and she was pulled backwards toward the owner of the arms, the only reason she didn't scream or did anything to the person who had his arms around her was because Alex had recognized the wrist watch and know that it was Jamie.
A feeling of relief flooded through her.
"Hey that's my girl," the guy said
"I think you will find that she is no one's girl," Jamie said with a hard edge in his voice "Either you run off and stop bothering people or I will…"
"You will what?" the guy mocked
"I will arrest you," Jamie said "DS Winter police."
The guy paled and couldn't get away fast enough with his tail between his legs.
"You okay?" Jamie asked Alex still with his arms around her
Alex just nodded, she was okay a bit shaken but fine.
"You sure?" Jamie asked still sounding worried
"Yeah I am fine," Alex said "Thanks for saving me."
Jamie unwrapped his arms from her waist and turned her around so that he could see that she was okay.
"Why didn't you I don't know kicked him were it hurt?" Jamie asked
Alex blushed a bit.
"I don't know really," she said "I would have kicked him if he had tried anything."
Jamie nodded and then ask what she wanted to do now keep walking around or go home?
Alex grinned and pointed out now that she had her knight in shining armour she was safe, and he had yet to win her a giant teddy nor had they gone on any rides. Jamie laughed and they started to wander again, that Alex maybe walked just a bit closer to him than normally, something he didn't minded at all.
It didn't take long for the duo to get back to laughing and joking around again, they went on rides, they eat weird stuff and they had fun a lot of fun.
They had just been trying a new pear cider when nature called for Alex.
"I need to go to the little girl's room," she said and jogged off to the loo and just like Jamie had done she turn around just before she arrived at the que and waved back at him with a silly face which made Jamie laugh and wave back.
The que was long so it took nearly half an hour for Alex to return, Jamie stood with his back at her so she did what everyone would have done in a situation she sneaked up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Hello," she said "Missed me?"
Jamie who had not heard her jumped nearly out of his clothes when he felt some's arms around him.
"Yes I missed you so much," he said in a mildly sarcastically tone while smiling big "what should we do now?"
"How about we try some rides?" she said letting go of Jamie
"What do you want to ride?" he asked her
"I don't know let's see what they have," she said and they started walking towards the rides.
"When I was waiting for you I bumped into my boss," Jamie said as they walked "He was here with his family, his wife invited me to theirs next weekend."
"That is nice of them," Alex said "I meet my uncle, aunt and little cousin here when I was waiting for you before the jerk."
"How is work by the way?" he asked her
Alex told him that her work was good, fun, they had just got some new things in that was really interesting, she also said that one of her co-worker had got kittens and they were so cute, Jamie had to agree with that.
They looked around at the rides to see which one they wanted to ride first, in the end they choose the dodgems.
So they sat down in the cars both knowing they would try to bump into the other more.
"That was fun," Jamie said as he helped Alex out of the cars when they ride was over, Alex agreed laughing.
"I think I won," she said and stumbled a bit nearly falling over but Jamie grabbed her and help her find her balance.
"I think we should call it a tie," he said "What next?"
It had started to go dark and most families with small children had gone home by this time.
"I know I think I saw a haunted house here," Alex said smiling "Let's go that one, if you are not too scared of course."
"Me! Scared of a silly haunted house?!" Jamie said "Never!"
They found the haunted house and started to ride, it didn't took long for Alex to grab Jamie's hand, and Jamie had at the same time grabbed Alex's hand.
As the ride ended and the duo climbed out and walked back out to the fair.
"So what do you want to do now?" Jamie asked
"I am a bit hungry again," Alex said as her stomach made a sound
Jamie nodded and said that he would eat too, so off they went to find some food.
They looked around a lot looked good, but in the end they both decide to have BLTs with chips.
They sat down to eat their sandwiches and drink their cola.
"So was it scary?" Jamie asked as he took a bite of his food.
"The haunted house?" Alex asked
Jamie nodded.
"Maybe little bit," Alex said "it was mostly fun, what did you think?"
"I agree with you," he said "It was fun and just a little bit scary. Want to ride anything else after this?"
Alex thought about it and then said no, she was pretty happy now, and the dogs would need their evening walk and evening food too.
"So what was the best part?" Jamie asked and popped a chip in his mouth.
"I don't know," Alex said nicked a chip from Jamie's plate grinning at him "What about you?"
"Winning the giant candy box," Jamie said with a big grin as it had been one of the few things he had won and not Alex.
"You will never be able to eat all that candy," Alex said and nicked another chip
"You are just jealous that I won it and you didn't," he teased her and tried to block her hand from taking any more of his chips.
"I am not," she said grinning "If you really were my knight in shining armour you would share with me."
"Oh is that so," he said "What do I get in return if I do share with you?"
"I don't know, what do you want?" Alex asked and nicked the last chip from him.
"I will have think about it," was the answer she got from him "Ready to go back to the car?"
She nodded and got up.
They walk slowly back to the car, stopping at some booths trying for the last time to win something or just to watch either what was at the booth or other people trying to win prizes and failing.
They did notice that more and more teens seemed to mill around making noise, they also saw that more people had a bit too much to drink.
Some was wobbling around other was yelling stuff that didn't make any sense, but they got back to Jamie's car without anything too weird happening.
The drive home was mostly in silence as Jamie had to concentrate on the road as it had grown dark while they drove.
Alex started to nod of as the day had been long and much had happened.
"We are home," Jamie said and light shook her shoulder to wake her up.
"Oh already," Alex said still a bit sleepy "Thanks for today, it was really fun."
She got out and was a bit surprised that Jamie did the same.
"I can find my own door," she joked but was happy that he was nice enough to follow her to the door.
There they stopped.
"I think I know what I want for sharing my candy," Jamie said as he stood be her door
"Oh what do you want?" Alex said smiling "More of my cupcakes?"
"No," his said "While your cupcakes are the best as is all you bake, I have something else in mind."
He wrapped his arms around Alex's waist and pulled her closed to her and with a swift move he led down and captured her lips with his, it took not many moment for Alex to start kissing back, her arms snaked around his neck. It was not until they both needed to breath that they broke apart still resting their foreheads against each other.
"Wow," Alex just said
"Is that a good wow or a bad wow?" Jamie asked sounding unsure
"A good one," Alex said before she pulled him down for one more kiss, this one more intense than the one before.
They broke apart once again as the lack of air got to them.
"So I get some of you candy now?" Alex asked with a cheeky smile
Jamie just laughed and kissed her nose
"Did you only kiss me for my candy?" he asked teasingly
"Yes it was all for the candy," Alex said just a teasingly as him
From the other side of the door they could hear the dogs barking as they had heard them coming home.
"I have to get them out on a quick walk and then feed them," Alex said
"Do you want any help with that?" Jamie asked
Alex smiled and gave him a quick kiss before she said no she could handle it by herself and that he should get home as he also must be tired.
One last kiss and Jamie walked back to his car, he stopped before he jumped in.
"See you tomorrow," he called to her "Around ten okay with you?"
Alex called back that ten would be great, she stood and watch as he drove of before she open the door and went inside to her two very happy dogs.
