Chapter 17
"Some Truths Can Never Be Revealed"
As the law covered every square inch of Pleasure Island, all we could do was reflect on why and how that a so called Admiral would carry out such an operation. Leaning against the doorway of the pool hall, I saw boys and girls lured to an island that held a severe secret being rescued, taken back home to their families.
"Fred?" I heard Daphne call to me as she was being examined for any injuries in the pool hall. "You okay?"
"Yeah," I answered, turning around to face her. "You know, I've been thinking Daphne…"
"About what?"
"This island, how did it end up becoming cursed and why would anyone want to profit off of it?"
I had a look in my face that signified that we may never know the whole truth about Pleasure Island.
"Do you think that Reverend Kane could have been behind all this? Like he did at Six Flags and River Country?"
"Possibly," I said, reach onto the pool table and picking up the 8 ball as I saw Foulfellow and Gideon lead off the island in handcuffs. "But, part of me thinks that is not the case. There might be someone out there who might just be as worse as Reverend Kane. I mean, what McCroskey was going to do to you, it was almost Satanic."
Still clutching the 8 ball, I left the pool hall and proceeded to walk alone amongst the ongoing arrests and investigation that was happening around me.
"Satanic?" Daphne called out to me as she caught up with me. "Fred, are you saying that…?"
"Yes, I think Satan himself was behind all of this, all of it. He is worse than Reverend Kane and one day, just one day, we will face him again."
The thoughts continued to pour into my mind, the idea that Satan himself would carry out such an atrocity against us. But being a Catholic, Daphne was confident that Satan would never touch us as long as she believed in her savior…our savior.
"So, now what?" Daphne asked me.
"We go home," I answered as we looked out over the ocean to the mainland of Italy. "And pray that we have a better outcome on the next case."
As a gust of wind blew and the boat carrying McCroskey and his henchmen back to the mainland passed us, I could only help that we would indeed have a better outcome. Then again, nothing is ever guaranteed in our line of work.
The next case was out there just waiting for us…
