The Lestrange Tomb:
Lorna walked swiftly but quietly around the Ministry keeping a sharp eye out for any Ministry people from Britain. So far so good.
Tina and Newt arrived at the Records room. An old witch stood guard but Newt introduced Tina as Leta and she allowed them to pass through. Once they were within the walls, Newt decided it was time to speak out or he would never get the chance again. "Tina…about Leta…"
"I know you're not engaged to her Newt. Tom told me everything last night," her voice was a bit sharp.
"Look my brother's marrying Leta, June the sixth... I'm supposed to be best man Which is sort of mildly hilarious. What is it that's on your mind?"
Tina glanced desperately at Newt. "Does your brother think you're here to win Leta back?" Newt was silent. "Are you here to win her back? Are you still in love with her?"
Newt pursed his lips and half-shut his eyes for a moment, reflecting on everything he and Leta had together when they were younger. He visualised the photo of her in her gorgeous dress and jewellery in his suitcase. "I was…in love with her once. Even after she caused me to get expelled, I was still in love with her…for a while. When my brother became engaged to her…I felt jealous…but since I…"
Tina's expression softened. "What?" Newt couldn't speak. He was too nervous that she tried to speak up again. "Newt, I read your book, and did you..."
"I still have a picture of you," Newt pulled out a folded piece of paper and unravelled it showing Tina's face. Her lips parted. "I got this...I mean, it's just a picture of you from the paper. It's interesting because your eyes in newsprint...see, in reality, they have this effect in them, Tina, it's like fire in water, in dark water," Newt's heartbeat accelerated as he felt his insides tingling. "I've only ever seen that. I've only ever seen that in..." he paused.
"Salamanders?" Tina finished. Her eyes watered. They did nothing but stare into each other's eyes. Newt wanted to make the ultimate move. He tried to speak again but there heard something loud and shuffling. Someone was nearby. Tina quickly grabbed his hand and pulled him away. As they dashed through the hallways, they saw the record shelves moving around, shuffling. They heard a woman's voice above their heads. Leta's.
Lorna saw some Ministry officials scouting through the hallways, looking for her and Newt. She waved a wand. Wind gusts appeared out of nowhere and blew them off in separate corners. Then she flicked her wand and made several objects fly into them knocking them out. But she heard something moving from a few rooms away. And Leta's voice. She tried to slip away but then she heard, "Stop right there!" she turned her head to see one of the Ministry officials who came to Hogwarts pursuing her. ...The moving shelves made Newt and Tina feel squeezed so they quickly grabbed onto the rails of one and they moved around towards the railings of the upper level. Through between the boxes, Newt saw Leta, dressed up in pink. She pulled a slip out and opened it. "Records moved to the Lestrange family tomb at Piere Lachaise,"
Newt and Tina eyed each other intently. They had to get to the cemetery but first, they needed to reunite with Lorna, they couldn't leave her behind. Newt noticed Pickett was missing from his pocket. Then she heard a spell. "Circumroata," the shelf they were on, spun around and he twisted his head to see Leta. "Hello, Newt.
"Hello, Leta," he greeted awkwardly.
Leta flicked her sight at Tina. "Hi," she greeted.
Tina tried to sound a little cheery. "Hi,"
Leta looked at Newt again. "You shouldn't be here,"
"I know," The conversation was interrupted by a chorus of something vicious. They turned around to see the old witch again with four giant hairless black cats, growling with their large teeth.
"What kind of cats are those?" Tina asked anxiously.
"These aren't cats. They're Matagots. They're spirit familiars. They guard the Ministry," Newt did his best to remain calm. "But they won't hurt you..."
"Stupefy!" Leta shot a spell at one of them but that only made it multiply into three cats.
"..unless you attack them," Newt finished.
"Oops," Leta said. Quickly she shuffled over the rail to join Tina and Newt. "Reverte!" The cats leapt at them but the shelf moved away quickly. They climbed down hearing the cats screeching as they chased after them. ...Lorna fought the Ministry officials quite easily but more were coming quickly. Hearing more of them coming, she searched desperately for a quiet, safe corner. She found a room and fled inside, shutting it quickly.
The wizards paced cautiously towards the locked door wands out. "Come out Lorna! You've got nowhere to go!" one shouted. The door didn't open. She tried using 'Alohomora' but it didn't work. She had put a successful charm on it.
"Then you leave us no choice. Three! Two! One!" 'Boom!' The officials blasted the door open with a combined effort of Bombarda spells but when they entered the room, they didn't see Lorna. There was no Floo powder station, no other door. All they saw was a phoenix in a cage.
"Just a phoenix," one said.
"Come on! Let's check the other sections," another said. They left and shut the door. The moment it did, the cage disappeared in sparks and the phoenix flapped her wings. ..."Quick! Into the case!" Newt urged the women. Leta and Tina quickly climbed down. Then he climbed down after them into his creature shed.
"What now?" asked Tina. "What about Lorna?"
Leta gasped. "She's here?"
"Don't worry! Just leave it to me!" Newt whistled and when he exited his shed, he saw the Zouwu appear to him. It crooned affectionately. "You think you can help us?" The creature nodded. For saving its life and free it from those brutal chains, it would help its new friend anywhere. "I'm gonna need to ride your back. If you don't mind" Newt would always ask first,"
The creature lowered its back and he mounted it. Tina watched fascinatedly. Newt rode the powerful beast through the giant shed and in an instant it shot out of the suitcase back into the room of shelves which had lowered into the crowd. "Accio!" Newt summoned his suitcase back to his hands. The cats leapt up at the creature but Newt kicked them off. Still, more cats kept appearing from the doors of the records room. "Ascendio!" Newt cast his spell upon the stacks of shelves and they rose out of the floor.
The Zouwu climbed over them, knocking them down, and taking out the cats. She leapt onto the upper floor the cats behind her. They clawed at her fur making her scream. Newt blasted them away with his spells but he saw wizards and witches coming. Just then he heard a loud, echoing squeal of a bird. He raised his head and saw a phoenix flying towards him. He watched as the bird grabbed one witch with its claws and threw it against some other wizards. Then it breathed fire at the others.
Newt whistled. The phoenix seized its attack and watching her close friend open his case, she flew right down and into it.
Leta and Tina in the case unaffected by all the calamity going on outside watched the firebird descend towards them through the opening. They gazed at it with admiration. Where had it come from? The opening closed and all was quiet for a very long while.
The two sat still in the shed. Then light poured down from above upon their heads. They looked up and saw Newt's head. "Come on!" Leta climbed out first into the opening. Then she offered a hand to Tina and pulled her out too. They watched Newt nuzzling the Zouwu before Tina picked the toy he used earlier to capture her and jingled it around earning its attention with its bell sounds. It cooed and calmed down.
The phoenix flew out of the case before Newt and Tina gently worked together to lead it inside. The three humans stared cautiously at the bird of fire.
"What's a phoenix doing here?" Tina asked.
"That is no phoenix," said Newt.
The bird descended carefully towards the ground, burning in a ball of fire. Then from out of the evaporating flames appeared Lorna, unharmed, unburnt from the flames. She opened her eyes and was met with Newt's arms hugging her tightly.
"Are you all right?" he asked.
Lorna nodded against his shoulder. He let go and took one last look at her before moving aside.
"How…how did you do that?" Tina asked, more scared than surprised.
"I'm an Animagus,"
"How? A…a…. animaguses only transform into normal animals,"
"I'm a special type of animagus," she explained.
"I haven't seen you do that before,"
"Not a gift I share with people I don't completely trust," Lorna explained. "The Ministry knows nothing about this. And they can't. Where are we?"
The adults peered around and they found themselves in a dark atmosphere with only the light of the moon shining through the trees. Everywhere they turned they saw tablet stones, giant grave markers and statues. "This is the cemetery of Piere Lachaise," Leta explained.
"We need to get to the Lestrange family tomb," said Tina. "Now,"
Jacob and Tom entered the Lestrange Mausoleum very cautiously. All around them was white marble stone with names engraved everywhere in solid letters. Tom could almost feel their spirits haunting the place; he felt a little scared. Jacob held his hand protectively.
Kama could be anywhere. They had to find Credence and his friend soon. "Pss…" Tom called out. "Credence?" Nothing. "Anyone there?" Still, there was no response. He tried focusing his mind on someone nearby but still nothing. It was like something magical was blocking him. Were they too late? Had they made a mistake? Tom felt downcast but Jacob wouldn't give up on him. He called out again. Then at last a voice came.
"Who's there?"
Tom's heartbeat accelerated. He felt more relief than he had felt in months. "Credence?" he turned a corner. Standing at the very back was a tall, scared boy with black shaved hair in red and brown worn-out clothing. The Chinese girl next to him was tall wearing a blue circus dress.
Tom's brother stared at him vacantly. "Is that you, Tom?"
Tom's breathing slowed. "It is. I'm so happy to see you," without thinking, he flew right to his brother, and throw his arms around. Credence didn't react but he slowly pressed his hands to his back. Jacob smiled. And so did Credence's friend.
"What are you doing here?" Credence asked blankly.
"Saving you of course," Tom answered. "You silly. Come on. Let's go," he attempted to grab his hand but his brother asked another question.
"Why did you leave me?"
Tom stared at Credence surprised by his choice of question. Even Jacob was too. "I didn't leave you. I thought you were dead. I had no idea you were alive till now," he noticed the girl still staring a little distrustfully at him. "Who are you?"
"I'm…Nagini," she introduced herself. To her surprise, Tom hugged her.
"Thank you…thank you for taking such good care of my brother," he said. "You can come with us. My dad can protect you too,"
"Your…dad?" Credence asked, a hint of jealousy thrumming in his voice.
"That wizard…Newt at the subway. He took me in," explained Tom. He was desperate to tell his brother everything that had happened in the time they had been separated from each other. "We need to go now,"
"No," Credence answered.
Tom was shocked by how he was acting. "You don't understand. You're in danger. There are people here looking for you. I came here to save you,"
"A man told me to come here. He said I could find answers about who I am. He gave me this," he held up a map.
Tom was shocked. It had to be Grindelwald. "Credence please listen to me. You cannot trust whoever gave you that. You are being hunted by that dark wizard who wants to use you to kill the only thing that stands between him and his goal of power. And ministry people are hunting you down too. But my dad Newt. He can help you. But as he helped me,"
Credence didn't say anything nor did he move. This wasn't the brother that Tom had loved before.
"Credence…I think we should listen to him," Nagini implored. "He came here to save you,"
"Come on kid. Your brother's just trying to protect you. You can trust us," something quick and light-struck Jacob. He fell flat on the ground, frozen.
"Jacob!" Tom cried. He tried to run to his frozen body but he saw Kama standing before them, blocking their way. Quickly he put himself between him and his brother.
Kama approached them sinisterly. "Get out of my way boy,"
Tom shook his head. "No. You'll have to kill me first," He was not afraid to die. Credence was touched by his courage.
"I don't want to kill you too," Kama was hesitating.
"I'm sorry that you were bound to kill my brother but I can't let you do this,"
"Then you leave me no choice," Kama raised his wand. Tom's eyes enlarged. He felt himself back inside that hotel room where Grindelwald killed his family.
"Stop!" a loud voice shouted, stopping Kama. He turned around to see two witches with their wands aimed at him. The speaker in pink had her black and silver wand aimed at him.
"Whatever you do to them, we'll unleash on you tenfold," the second witch warned.
"Lorna," Tom breathed, glad they arrived just on time.
"Are you all right?" she asked.
He nodded.
"Tom?!" Newt appeared.
"Dad!" Tom rushed straight into his open arms. Newt hugged him tightly. Whilst Nagini smiled at the happy moment, Credence felt deep jealousy. What he saw before him was something he had wanted his entire life.
"Are you hurt?" Newt asked his son.
"I'm fine," he said. Tom moved to hug Tina.
Leta stared at Kama; her face turned pale. "Yusuf?"
Lorna blinked seeing Yusaf staring ghostly back at Leta. "Is that really you? My little sister .?"
"Sisters?" Lorna breathed out. "You two know each other,"
Unable to keep her eyes off Kama, Leta nodded slowly. "He reached out to me in a letter a few months ago,"
Newt, Tom and Tina couldn't believe what they were seeing.
"So, he's your brother?" Credence asked Leta. "Who am I?
Leta stared at him, something struggling to remain hidden behind her shrivelling lips. Lorna noticed. All her distrust came fuming back again. "I don't know,"
"I'm tired of living with no name and no history. Just tell me my story-then you can end it," Credence demanded.
Kama lowered his wand. "Your story is our story,"
"No, Yusuf," Leta begged.
The crowd stood in the atrium of the Mausoleum. "My father was Mustafa Kama," Kama began. "A pure-blood of Senegalese descent and most accomplished. My mother, Laurena, was equally high-bred-a noted beauty," as he spoke, colours of light bent around the group revealing a happily married couple with a young happy son, him. "They were deeply in love. They knew a man of great influence, from a famous French pure-blood family," the light rays changed and they saw a man in his fifties, with a greedy, lustful face. "He desired her. Lestrange used the Imperius Curse to seduce and abduct her," As he spoke, they saw an image of his younger self trying to save his enchanted mother but the selfish wizard blasted him away. "I tried to prevent it but he attacked me. That was the last time I ever saw her,"
For the first time since meeting him, Tom felt truly sorry for him. He had suffered greatly because of how Lestrange Senior had taken his mother away from them.
"She died, giving birth to a little girl," Kama stared at Leta, disconsolate. "You. The news of her death drove my father insane. With his dying breath, my father charged me to seek revenge,"
Newt held his son close. No matter how much they hated this man for trying to attack and betray them, they understood how truly painful his life had been. Losing his mother than being bound by his own father to accomplish an unbreakable promise with the penalty of death should he refuse.
"Kill the person Lestrange loves best in the world. I thought at first it would be easy. He had only one close relative," he stared at Leta. "You. But...
"Say it," demanded Leta dejectedly.
"He never loved you,"
Lorna for a moment felt very pitiful for Leta. It was just like at Hogwarts, always being reminded that she was an unwanted child.
"He remarried not three months after her death. He loved her no more than he had loved you But then... his son, Corvus, was born at last," Lestrange's image held a baby in his arms. "And that man who had never known... love was filled with it. All he cared about was little Corvus,"
Lorna watched Leta's face harden.
"So... this is the truth? I am Corvus Lestrange?" asked Credence, desperate for a name at last.
"Yes," Kama answered.
"No," Leta denied.
"Yes,"
"No," Credence listened more to Kama than to Leta. "Realizing that Mustafa Kama's son had sworn revenge, your father sought to hide you where I couldn't find you. So he confided you to his servant, who boarded a ship for America,"
Newt and Tom observed Leta pacing back and forth, trying to conceal something.
"He did send Corvus to America, but..." she was interrupted.
"His servant, Irma Dugard, was a half-elf...Her magic was weak and therefore left no trace I could follow, I had only just discovered how you had escaped when I received the news I never expected. The ship had gone down at sea,"
Lorna and Newt remembered the tragic news of the Titanic ship sinking at sea, billions of people losing their lives.
"But you survived, didn't you? Somehow, someone had pulled you from the water! A son cruelly banished. The despair of the daughter," Kama's recruitment of the prophecy made Leta cry but he didn't care. "Return, great avenger with wings from the water," he pointed at her, then back at Credence. "There stands the despairing daughter. You are the winged raven returned from the sea, but I.. am the avenger of my family's ruin,"
Tom saw him about to raise his wand.
"I pity you, Corvus, but you must die," he pointed his wand again at Credence but Tom jumped in between.
"I won't let you!" Tom stood between them, facing Yusaf. "You'll have to kill me first,"
"Tom! No!" Newt begged.
"Don't make me kill you kid," Yusaf ordered. "I have to or I'll die,"
"I don't care if you die! You cannot kill him! He had nothing to do with your pain!"
"I'm sorry that I have to do this," Before Yusaf could kill either of them, Leta stepped up and shouted out, "Corvus Lestrange is already dead! I killed him!" Everyone turned to her, questions already ready to burst out. "Accio," a box was pulled out from one of the stone shelves. It magically unlocked and it opened. A tree began to bloom. "My father owned a very strange family tree. It only recorded the men..." pictures of men grew out of the trunk along with small pretty flowers. "The women in my family were recorded as flowers. Beautiful. Separate,"
"What did you do?" Lorna demanded.
Leta sniffled and stared down at the image of baby Corvus Lestrange. "My father sent me to America, along with Corvus. Irma was to pose as a grandmother with two grandchildren...Corvus never stopped crying. One night at sea Irma walked out of the cabin. I never wanted to hurt him. I only wanted to be free of him Just for a moment. Just a single moment. I swapped my brother with him," she pointed at Credence. "We were suddenly escorted off the ship and I watched the rowboat he was on go down. He drowned," As she finished the truth, she saw the flower representing her, strangle around the baby picture of Corvus. Then an apparition appeared in a powerful illumination of white. She looked up and saw her boggart. A sink piece of cloth, containing a drowning baby.
"You didn't mean to do it, Leta," sympathised Newt. "So it wasn't your fault,"
"Newt," she turned her face to him, regret and guilt consuming her emotions. "You never met a monster you couldn't love," they stared at each other in sorrow, the past bring nothing but pain to their faces.
"Leta, do you know who Credence really is?" asked Tina. "Did you know, when you swapped him?"
"No," she shook her head.
Credence glared at her and then hung his head.
"You really are a wicked woman," Lorna said repulsively.
Leta was struck to tears by her words. Even Newt, Tina and Tom were quite offended by her choice of words. A loud moaning grumble interrupted the moment and they saw Jacob standing up.
"Jacob," Tom hugged him. "Thank goodness,"
"I'm all right kid," he assured. He noticed the audience of people staring at him. "What I miss?"
That's another chapter done. Only two to three more to go and then it's Secrets of Dumbledore. I hope you all are enjoying this story as much as I'm enjoying writing it. See you all soon.
