"Elphie, you're trembling."
"Fabala, you look like you're going to pass out again; please go get some rest"
Elphaba shook her head.
Nessarose was worried about Elphaba. She hasn't slept, hasn't eaten, and she hasn't left Fieyro's bedside since they'd brought him home from the hospital. She understood that she was in shock and she was worried out of her mind for Fiyero, but she couldn't begin to neglect her own needs and she couldn't shut herself out from them. She needed to let them take care of not only Fiyero but her as well.
Nessarose looked at Galinda worriedly then back at Elphaba. "You need to eat something."
Again, Elphaba shook her head. How could she possibly stomach anything right now? Besides, "I need to make sure he's ok."
Galinda and Nessarose exhaled. At least Elphaba was talking. This was the first time they'd heard her say anything in days.
There was a soft knock at the doorway and everyone but Elphaba turned around. Helena looked at Nessarose and Galinda, silently asking if they'd made any progress in trying to get Elphaba out of the room. Both girls shook their heads.
Helena approached Elphaba, purposefully making her steps loud so she wouldn't startle her. "Honey," she put her hands on her shoulders, "come eat."
Elphaba silently said no.
"You have to. Elphaba, it will do him no good to wake up and have you as weak as you are," because there was no doubt in anyone's head that Elphaba was going to be Fiyero's primary caretaker once he woke up. "You need to take care of yourself. Come on."
Elphaba swallowed. "But -"
"We'll watch him. You trust us don't you?" Nessarose asked. "And if anything happens, one of us will go get you immediately,"
Galinda nodded in agreement. "We promise."
Helena wrapped an arm around Elphaba's shoulders, seriously hoping that she would understand where everyone was coming from and go with her. Her hold on her daughter in law tightened once she slowly began to stand up from her chair. Thank Oz.
Nessarose and Galinda gave Elphaba's hand a gentle touch when she passed them and took her place at Fiyero's bedside, making sure he was alright.
Helena kept her hold on Elphaba the entire way to the kitchens. It was scary how robotic she'd become in the past couple of days, though she couldn't blame her at all. She was similar to her husband in that matter.
"What are you in the mood for, darling?" she asked Elphaba. She frowned when she felt her start shaking. Helena moved to stand in front of her and grabbed her at the shoulders. "Elphaba?" she prompted.
"I - " she couldn't hold it in any longer. Elphaba broke down in sobs. It was the first time she'd let herself cry since Fiyero got hurt. She couldn't stop her tears and she knew she was staining Helena's clothes.
Her mother in law kissed her forehead and held her tightly. "I know," she was crying too.
Elphaba felt like she was cursed. They couldn't have found their way back to each other only to be torn apart again. She couldn't lose Fiyero. Life couldn't be that cruel.
She held on to Helena tightly and just let herself cry. She didn't know what she would do if Fiyero didn't pull through. He was strong, but he'd suffered a lot of internal damage. It was a very real possibility that despite doctors' best efforts, he wouldn't make it.
The first thing Fiyero registers is that his stomach was killing him. Absolutely killing him. He shifted his elbow with the intention of sitting up, but someone stopped him.
"No, don't even think about it," a voice said.
"Your wound isn't fully healed, Your Highness."
Wound?
"What?" Fiyero groaned, opening his eyes.
Nessarose was beside the bed and standing behind her was a doctor he didn't recognize.
"Do you remember what happened, Fiyero?" Nessarose asked.
Fiyero put a hand to his stomach, groaning slightly as the pain that cause and his sister in law moved his hand away.
"Don't, you'll only hurt yourself."
Slowly, he began to remember what had happened and nodded when Nessarose asked him if he remembered how he'd gotten hurt again.
He honestly barely listened to the doctor tell him about the steps he'd have to take for his road to recovery; he felt like he was going to pass out and throw up and explode all at the same time. The only thing keeping him awake was the thought of ELphaba. He needed to see her, make sure she was alright.
Once the doctor left Fiyero and Nessarose alone, he asked her about his wife.
"Is Fae alright?" he crooked, his voice a bit dry.
Nessarose nodded and squeezed Fiyero's hand. "She's…she's distraught, obviously. But physically, she's alright, thanks to you. And I can never thank you enough. I just wish it didn't have this outcome, we could've lost you."
"Don't thank me," Fiyero said. "I'd do anything for her."
"Believe me everyone knows that."
She would be forever grateful for Fiyero, he took care of Elphaba in every single sense of the word. She just wished he wouldn't have gotten so hurt. But at least the worst was over now, he could start recovering and Elphaba would have a huge weight lifted off her shoulders knowing that her husband would pull through.
Nessarose could see that Fiyero was fighting really hard to stay awake. "Go to sleep." He was exhausted.
"I - "
"Galinda went to go get her," she reassured. "She'll be the first thing you see when you wake up again."
Elphaba moved Fiyero's fringe away from his eyes, which were starting to flutter. She'd been so relieved when she'd been told he'd woken up and that now he was just resting. She sighed and could feel some tears stinging her eyes when he finally fully opened his eyes.
"Are you ok?" he asked.
And her jaw dropped. "Me?" she said incredulously. "You got impaled by a pole and you've been unconscious for two days and you're asking me if I'm ok?" This man. She would strangle him under different circumstances, but Elphaba just sighed and kissed his forehead. "I'm better now that I know you'll be ok," she said. "And you?"
"I'm fine."
"Any pain right now? Anything bothering you?"
He shook his head and Elphaba sat carefully next to him on the bed and looked him in the eyes. "Never do that to me again, you hear me?" her voice broke slightly. "Never put yourself in danger because of me."
"I can't promise you that."
"Fiyero - "
"I love you more than life itself. I'd take any hit for you."
Elphaba sighed and caressed Fiyero's hand. She knows where she's coming from, dear Oz she would give her life from him in a split second. But she couldn't lose him, it would absolutely destroy her. Was this how he felt when she'd gotten hurt? It was the worst feeling in the world and she hated it. She guessed this was a price to pay for loving someone this much. They'd go back to this later, right now the important thing was him getting better, his wound would cause him great pain when it came to moving around again, but she would be there every step of the way.
"I love you."
"I love you, too, Fae."
She smiled and kissed his lips softly. "You're going to be ok," he cupped her cheek and she planted a kiss on his palm.
I wouldn't torture y'all (or myself) that long :)
In other news, TAYLOR'S ALBUM MIDNIGHTS CAME OUT AND I HAVE NEVER CRIED SO MUCH IN MY LIFE. It's gorgeous, the storytelling, underlying themes, metaphors, and of course, the music and lyrics themselves, *chef's kiss* I legitimately don't have a favorite track, I love so many.
Oof, sorry about that, I'm just such a huge fan of Taylor's and her music always makes me emotional.
We're nearing the end. Maybe 2-3 chapters left. Tell me what you thought :)
