Spoilers for season 10 - Episode 7

Chapter - 52

If Thanksgiving was hard to deal with, then Christmas was going to be even rougher on Steve.. He had many Christmas's now without his mother present but this was the first one he had since he knew she wouldn't perhaps surprise him and be there. The month had been busy and before you know it, Christmas Eve was here at last and he had to admit that with Joan around, it was a lot more fun then he thought it would be. Mary had let him and Catherine in on the fact that at their house, Joan had an elf on the shelf and Catherine thought it would be a good idea to get one for their own house to watch over Joan when she was there.

Watching Catherine as she put the elf in it's position on Steve's special recliner with his Christmas Eve gift for Joan, he smiled softly as he shook his head loving how excited this got Catherine. He was slowly healing more and more each day but he had to admit, it was hard waking up this morning knowing that tomorrow was Christmas Day and there wouldn't be his mother, father, Joe White, his Aunt Deb or his best friend Freddie, and that Catherine was dealing with it being the first Christmas without her Dad as well.

Thinking back to that thanksgiving night when it was just himself, Catherine, Danny and Mary and Mary had to go mention the elf thing.. "I think that's an awesome idea Mare… I'll go and have a look for one for our house tomorrow". Catherine answered excitedly, wanting to get into Christmas herself to honour her own father who had died earlier in the year as well. Her mother was coming to Hawaii to live and while it was hard that her father had died and she was mourning his death as well as mourning and helping Steve and Mary mourn their mother's death, she didn't want it to be a sad time of year with Joan and the other little kids around.

"Ohh no, I draw the line at a creepy little elf watching my every move", Steve had grumbled with a slight grin on his face to let his sister and Catherine know that he was kidding.. "You just don't want the elf to go back to Santa and tell on you for being a naughty little Sailor boy", Danny teased as he took another sip from his beer bottle. "Yeah, like you would be any better.. Bet that is why you never had one for Grace and Charlie all these years", he teased back in a soft voice.

Coming back into the present time, he afforded himself a smile and watch Catherine take the photo of the elf they had named Rambo after the name that some of Steve's team had nicknamed him. "Why does the elf?", he began and then stopped when Catherine gave him a look, "I mean Rambo have to steal my chair?.. Why can't he sit in your chair?" She giggled and smirked as she came over to him and kissed his cheek softly, "Because Rambo is a little miniature you, and Joanie knows how much you love the recliner so I figured it would make her laugh to see Rambo in your chair".

It was funnier still because Catherine had her mother make little elf clothes that matched Steve's five-o clothes but also his Navy uniform as well, and She had Rambo dressed in his dress blues, "I'm thinking when we have a baby of our own, we add a girl elf and name her Rambo-ette", he pulled her closer and leant down, his hand moving through her hair as he kissed her slowly, "Mmm", she snuggled into him and sighed happily, "I'm good with that". She didn't mind at all, it had kept her mind on other things as she created different things for the elf to do, and even if Joan didn't get to come over every day, she always took a photo and sent it to Mary to show Joan at what their elf was doing.

Tonight though, they were having a quiet Christmas Eve dinner with just Mary, Joan, Steve, Catherine and her mother Jane. They had invited Danny, Rachel and the kids as well but they decided to do something together as a family on their own. Christmas Day was going to be pretty big. They were going to visit Doris and John McGarrett's graves as well as Jackson Rollins's, and maybe visit the USS Arizona. The actual memorial was closed on Christmas Day but they thought they would go to Pearl Habour and just get a look at the memorial from afar. Then they were going to have breakfast, just the two of them at the Wailana coffee house, have lunch at Danny's house and then dinner at Steve and Catherine's and exchange gifts with Mary, Joan and Jane.

While all the members of five-o observed Christmas in different ways and wouldn't all get to see each other on December 25th, they would celebrate the day the next day. In some parts of the world, December 26th was observed as Boxing Day and while they didn't really do that in America, Steve wanted this to be a new tradition, where the whole five-Ohana got together and celebrated Christmas. The governor had given them all Christmas Day and Boxing Day off, and that they weren't to be disturbed unless it was something extremely urgent and couldn't wait till the 27th.

He hadn't seen for himself yet but had heard through the grapevine that Kono, Chin, Abby and Sara had come back for Christmas on the island as well, and he was planning on inviting them to come and spend the day on the 26th as well. "So, was there any last minute shopping you needed to do?" Catherine gazed at Steve, her arms around him still, "I think we got all the gifts we need to get, only need to do some grocery shopping to make sure we have everything we need food, and drink wise ".

There was one gift that Steve was getting mended for Catherine but he wasn't going to say anything to her. It was her Dad's baseball glove that he used when he used to play baseball with her as a kid. Jackson Rollins had given it to him one time when he was staying with the Rollins. Steve knew that Catherine had lost her glove years ago so he had decided to get the glove professionally mended which had been falling apart and give that to her for Christmas. He was also going to get the man to hand stitch her fathers signature and military ID numbers on the glove as well.

He remembered Jackson telling him that the two of them loved the LA Dodgers as he was stationed there years ago when Catherine was still a kid and the two of them bonded over their shared love of baseball and their team. Steve used to rib Catherine for liking the L.A Dodgers for baseball but then also being a fan of the Dallas cowboys football team but it was only because she had been a fan of the Dodgers since she was a kid and didn't want to feel like she was betraying them by going for another baseball team but hadn't been into football during her time in LA so she felt comfortable rooting for the cowboys.

He had already taken it to the sports store and just had to go pick it up. He smiled as he wrapped his arms around her, he leaned in kissing her, "Why don't we make a list of groceries and then while you start on some of the wrapping for Mary and Joan while they aren't here, I'll go do the shopping" and then go pick up your mother from the airport", that way he could go pick up Catherine's present without her seeing or knowing about it. Nodding her head, she smiled, accepting his offer. "That sounds perfect to me babe, I'm sure my Mom would appreciate that and so do I".

Even though he was missing his own parents and those whom he had lost over the years, he was feeling pretty grateful and thankful to be able to celebrate Christmas with his family, and was really happy that he had Catherine buy his side, they both had lost family this year and they could both lean on each other, and support each other, it may have taken years to get them to this point but they were here now and he wasn't going to take this for granted.

Author Notes

I am sorry for not updating this sooner, I have just have had a bit of a break from writing, but I am back and going to keep updating these stories.. and no, the Guest comment telling me to stop writing didn't stop me, I didn't even see that comment till now. I really hope you all enjoy this chapter, I am looking forward to getting back into writing these stories.

Aloha50:

Thank you so much for the comment, I am so sorry it has taken nearly a year from when you wrote this comment to update it, I hope you enjoy this one as well.

Guest:

The very fact you needed to comment this and comment as a guest and not have the guts to put your name shows me what a hater in general you are, you probably whine about anything and everything that bothers you.. Here is a suggestion, this story has always been McRoll, it never once deviated from anything else, You have not been baited, it was always tagged as McRoll, has Catherine as a main character tagged, so here is my suggestion don't read if you don't like her character. I couldn't care less if you like or don't like her, a lot of people do and ship McRoll, so write what you wanna see if you don't like McRoll, but there is no way in hell I would ever put Steve with Danny or anyone else. He belongs with Catherine and if you don't like that, then tough shit. Move on and grow up, and stop writing hateful comments on peoples stories, and no, your comment didn't stop me from writing, I didn't see it for the first time till just now.
