Sir Kamoshida Suguru, the monstrous fiend of lust. We have become aware of your reign over the school and we won't stand for it a moment longer. No longer will you oppress those unable to fight back, we will ensure that you confess to all your sins. Tomorrow will be the day where we steal your vile, twisted desires without fail. From, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.

Cards bearing these words were scattered around Shujin, naturally causing quite the stir. Students and faculty alike were left wondering what on earth this could mean.

''Who did this?!''

A number of students near a board backed from a furious Kamoshida as he ripped one of the cards out. ''Who's responsible for this?!'' No one could meet his gaze, all simply hurrying away. ''I said-!''

''That's some threat...'' Kasumi looked on. ''...I had my doubts about this guy but...is he really...?''

''He totally deserves this, I promise.'' Ann made a note to ask what she meant about doubts later. ''I'll explain later.''

The girl nodded, both looking back in time to see Kamoshida storm over. ''Was it you?! Are you behind this farce? It's just like you to cause trouble, Sakamoto...!''

''Oh, get real.'' Ryuji didn't bother hiding the hate in his eyes. ''If I wanted to get back at you, I sure as hell wouldn't bother with some cards. What the heck's the point?''

Everyone seemed to concede that it was a valid point, the onlookers' wary gazes back on Kamoshida once more. The teacher growled, unable to argue. ''Watch yourself, or did you decide to crash and burn now that your future's toast?''

Only Subaru's hand on his shoulder stopped the angry teen's retort, something that didn't go unmissed by Kamoshida ''Coming to his rescue again, you defiant piece of garbage?'' Subaru remained calm, despite his companions' obvious anger. ''Hmph, birds of a feather flock together. Let's see how long it takes you to catch up with that waste of space.''

Only the four thieves saw the area change, Kamoshida momentarily replaced by his Shadow self as he taunted them to come and steal his treasure if they can.

Kasumi watched him leave, her tone nothing short of disgusted ''What a piece of work...''

''...I really think whoever posted those cards was on to something.''

The abrupt statement made the team look at Sumire in mild surprise ''Wait, he didn't...?'' Ann started.

Shaking her head as she knew where this was going, Sumire merely stated ''He did make a few remarks in passing and...I heard a few things he said before and...the more I thought about it, the more he just reminded of that man from the street.''

Subaru immediately understood, so did Kasumi, who scowled ''I can't believe you're actually just taking that, Senpai.''

''I'd have to actually care what he thinks to even react, Kasumi.''

Morgana snorted ''Fair enough. Anyway, you know what we have to do...''

With the preparations finished, the quartet headed back to the Palace after school. Mona had alerted them of the Calling Card causing a change but even though they couldn't see anything different, they certainly felt it. The air was charged, it was as if something could go wrong any minute.

Zorro's seal took them right where they last stopped, near the treasure hall. But instead of the glowing sphere, there was a large, colorful crown.

''Damn, so that's the actual treasure?'' Skull cocked his head.

''Yup! More proof that the Calling Card worked perfectly, if we take this, Kamoshida's heart will be changed.'' Mona grinned widely. ''To think I really made it this far, I owe you guys...''

Skull was about to tell him not to worry about that but then Mona's form seemed to quiver before his eyes gleamed ''TREASURE!'' The next thing they knew, he leaped at the crown and clung to it.

''Uh, Mona...?'' The cat was completely oblivious, rambling about the treasure and how happy he was. Needless to say, this abrupt turn threw the three for a loop. ''...what the heck...? Hey, snap out of it!''

Mona seemed too far gone to even hear him. Equally confused, Joker proceeded to pull the feline back. Seconds later, Mona blinked, as if coming out of a trance ''Oh...what was I...?''

''You completely flipped out, it was like that was a huge box of catnip or something.'' Skull arched an eye.

''For the last time, I'm not a cat!''

''Never mind that, Mona-what just happened?'' Joker wanted to know.

''Yeah, you were hugging that thing like no tomorrow. It was really out of character.'' Panther added.

''Oh...uh...'' Mona rubbed the back of his head. ''...if I had to guess, it's probably my senses reacting to the treasure. It's the first one I ever saw so it's bound to be at least a little overwhelming. Forgive me for such a display in front of a lady...''

''I didn't think it'd be so pretty-being that bastard's desires...'' Panther scowled. ''...how do we carry it though?''

''Well...maybe have our...'' Mona's eyes widened suddenly and he looked up, tensing. ''...never mind that, brace yourselves!''

Before they could question this, an ominous chuckle resounded around the room. Shadow Kamoshida appeared, the crown shrinking as it flew to his open palm. ''You will never take my treasure, fools. You'll die today!''

''That's awfully big talk from a lowly rapist scum!'' Panther spat.

''Yeah, we'll kick your ass again, you monster!'' Skull added.

''You all love to act like I'm the bad guy, huh? It's those people who came to me, seeking to take advantage of my power, they wanted something for themselves so what's wrong with me demanding a little thing for me?''

''That's how you wanna spin it, huh?! Of all the self-absorbed...you're so full of shit!'' Skull snarled.

''None of it gives you the right to torment all those people. The students who should've been able to rely on are left afraid with no where to turn to.'' Joker's eyes narrowed. ''You continue to cause nothing but pain for your own selfish goals and we won't stand for that. We're taking you down, here and now.''

''Yeah!'' His teammates chorused.

''You ignorant peasants! I'm the King, this is my world and I stand above everyone!'' Something in the very air seemed to shake as he stepped forward, shadows pooled around him before dispersing and he turned into a hideous pink monster with large eyes and a lolling tongue. Its four arms held weapons that were pointed at the team.

''The hell...?!'' Skull gaped.

''If I had to guess, remember how we took off our masks? I think a similar principle applies, we're looking at his true self as of now.'' Mona theorized.

Panther gripped her whip tightly ''Well, he's a despicable, lowlife scum of a monster. It makes sense to me.''

''Impudent brats, your luck ends here!'' The quartet dodged the weapons aimed at them, Panther opting to use her new gun while Mona charged to strike up close with Joker. Kamoshida's attempt to stop them was halted by a newly summoned Captain Kidd, who rammed his head. Growling, he caught them by surprise by swinging his head widely, using his tongue as a makeshift whip.

Panther didn't bother hiding her disgust ''I'm so going to need a good long shower.''

''By I, you mean we, right...?'' Skull stopped mid way to hold up his pipe in time to block the oncoming big fork coming his way. Mona summoned Zorro, who unleashed slicing blades of wind that almost hit the arm holding the trophy but Kamoshida pointedly turned away, tanking it instead. This struck him as odd but there was little time to question with the enemy's continuing offence.

Producing two volley balls, he hurled them quickly at the group, catching them as they bounced back and throwing them again. The attack came to fast for them to dodge, forcing them on the defensive. Laughing smugly, the enemy struck with his multiple arms again.

''That's more like it! Know your place, peasants!''

''There's that ego again...'' Skull refused to show any signs of pain and give the bastard the satisfaction. Panther's defiant expression showed that she felt the same, proceeding to summon Carmen and weaken their enemy with Tarunda. Likewise, Joker hit him with Genbu's Rakunda, both teens jumping to avoid his attempt at retaliation. Joker then switched to Obariyon, slowing the palace ruler with its Sukunda.

Kamoshida grunted in frustration as Mona healed the group ''You little pest! I should've known you'd be the most troublesome one-eat this!'' He lobbed two volley balls at Joker, who quickly dodged while his teammates seized the opportunity to unleash a counterstrike. Following suit, Joker called on Caith Sith to utilize Sukukaja.

As Mona distracted him with Zorro's Lucky Punch, Skull gave them a boost with Captain Kidd's Tarukaja before joining in on the offense. Joker and Panther hit the enemy from both sides with bullets. Both didn't miss how when Panther nearly hit the trophy, the Shadow only shielded it with his own body again. Before they could capitalize on this, he lashed out with the arm holding the knife, forcing them back. Panther almost stumbled from the force, willing herself to focus and use Carmen's Tarunda again.

The girl was about to mention the trophy to her friends when Kamoshida suddenly lifted it, allowing them to see what was in it. It looked like a drink with a number of female bodies within. This included, to Panther's disgust, her cognitive self. Kamoshida took a big slurp and they could see injuries on his body fading away. This made Skull curse but they knew they had to destroy that thing.

Kamoshida cackled ''What was that about taking me down, you trash? It's time I show you why I'm the King! It's time for my Golden Spike!''

Then, to their surprise, a cognitive Mishima came running out of the Shadows, just as battered as the one they saw in the prison cells. He was holding a large volley ball which he handed to the ruler with trembling hands, struggling against the weight. It gave a slight glow in Kamoshida's hands as he sneered down at them.

Mona called out a warning for everyone to be on their guard and not a moment to soon. For it wasn't long before he threw the volley ball, which was much more powerful than his previous attacks. The group remained standing however, thanks to their earlier defence and Kamoshida's power being weakened but it wasn't without considerable injury.

''Wha-how?!''

Mona and Joker took some medicine before ensuring that their teammates do the same, this also let the feline heal them with Zorro's Media. The Shadow was quivering in rage at the failure of his special technique ''You're just stalling the inevitable...''

''Aladdin, Snap!''

Before he could react, a fast moving blast struck him right on the head. Mona and Skull attacked next, while Carmen's flames covered them from Kamoshida's retaliation.

The sight gave Joker an idea. He recalled seeing a few barrels of wine in passing during one of their excursions. What if...? ''...I think we all agree that this thing needs to go. Panther, it might be some kind of alcohol. Do you think maybe...?''

Her expression lit up in understanding ''I like the way you think. Let's give it a try, Carmen!''

Giggling, the crimson dancer unleashed a burst of fire at the trophy. The drink immediately burst into flames. Kamoshida struggled to keep a hold of it, only for the drink to explode, making him fall. A smirking Mona proceeded to fan the resultant with his Persona's magic. ''Nice one, Joker. That worked like a charm-let's get him!''

Needing no further prompting, the quartet struck in tandem. Kamoshida cried out in pain and anger ''Ngh...That was from when I won nationals, how dare you strike the King?''

''You're still talking like that?'' Mona deadpanned.

''Trying to act all tough again...you sound seriously lame.'' Panther agreed.

He growled ''Show some respect, I'm the King, damn you!'' His attempt at another fast volley ball attack missed entirely.

''Well, if this won't work-there's one more thing we need to handle...''

Panther followed Mona's line of sight ''You mean we have to get the crown?''

He nodded ''Kamoshida's belief in his treasure is powering him up, if we take it away...'' The feline thief reasoned that one of them had to sneak away to await an opportune moment. He went on to add that Panther wasn't an option, their enemy's obsession with her would render any attempts to sneak away moot. Mona also wasn't certain that if Skull could be fast enough with that leg of his but the blond surprised him by stating that while he thinks he could, Mona was a better choice.

Joker agreed though ''You're the fastest one out of us and everything we've learned about being thieves is all thanks to you. You can definitely pull it off.''

The cat smirked after a moment ''...All right, leave it to me. Just try to distract him and I'll get started.''

Joker immediately fired a few bullets at the enemy's eyes, making it recoil with a snarl. ''Why you little-!''

His attempt at a counterattack was foiled by a newly summoned Carmen's flames creating a wall in his path. Skull's war cry made him look up to see the teen in the air, using the momentum of his descent for an extra powerful blow.

Mona looked on with a grin, having hidden behind one of the pillars ''Nice work, guys. I'm almost there...''

The battle continued in a similar vein. Kamoshida was still putting up a fight but his adversaries were slowly but surely gaining the advantage. Even his attempt to take advantage of Joker's growing weariness was foiled by Skull and Panther, who hit him twice as hard in return. This gave the teen enough time to recover with some medicine before he called on Slime, quickly stopping Kamoshida from grabbing any more volley balls by directing the Persona to go into his mouth.

The ruler spluttered and choked, quickly throwing Slime out ''How dare you do such a thing?!''

''Yeah, you're right...'' Joker unexpectedly agreed before looking at Slime ''...sorry, that was a split second decision but having you do that was uncalled for. I wouldn't wish dealing with that filth up close on my worst enemy.''

Skull burst out laughing while Panther's shoulders shook with suppressed giggles. The best part was that it was said in utter seriousness, even Slime gave a low sound they realized was its equivalent of a laugh.

Mona was snickering ''I couldn't have said it better.''

As the Shadow snarled in anger, lashing out at Joker, the teen nimbly dodged. It hit Mona what he was doing then. If Kamoshida had gotten around to using more of the volley balls, he would've gotten caught up in the battle. Silently thanking the teen, he scrambled away to a safer spot, his eyes never leaving the crown. Almost...he just had to wait until Kamoshida came closer...

Aladdin nearly cut one of his eyes out while Captain Kidd rammed him on the opposite side, sending the howling enemy to the ground. A grinning Mona was all to happy to seize the opportunity, leaping in just in time and landing away with the crown in paw.

''N-noooo!''

''You go, Mona!'' Skull cheered, the proud feline puffing out his chest.

''Give...give that back...'' The Shadow was struggling to get up as he reached for it, the crown srhinking to its normal size. ''...you can't...have it...''

''Still don't get the memo? You're not the boss of us!'' The ex-athlete taunted.

He snarled ''You want it that way? Fine, I'll finish you off. Oi, come here right now!''

''Of course, King Kamoshida!''

The voice made Panther freeze, while Skull looked livid ''That asshole...!''

Their worst fears were confirmed when a Cognitive Shiho made her presence known, clad in a play girl costume. Her smile was nothing short of sultry, with a look in her eyes that was just as vapid as Cognitive Ann as he continued to fondle her with a sneer.

Mona held back a growl as Kamoshida pointed them as the enemies, making her declare that she would defend him to her last. They were forced to tank another attack. He knew it was just a cognition but the fact that he still saw the girl like this was disgusting, not to mention he was likely doing it just to get at them.

Panther's frame trembled as she held back her tears. She couldn't...it wasn't the real Shiho, she didn't forget that. But she couldn't fight her...

''What's the matter? Not so high and mighty now, are you?''

Skull growled ''Come face us yourself, you coward!''

The enemy ignored the taunt, grabbing another volleyball in preparation for his Golden Spike ''Is that all you had? I knew you never stood a chance-this'll end it!''

Joker surprised everyone by firing a pair of bullets that startled both into backing away. Brandishing his double saber, together with Aladdin, he threw it at Kamoshida. He dodged Joker's but Aladdin's nearly chopped two of his arms off, with Joker's weapon stopping right in front of the Cognitive Shiho, making her recoil.

''I won't miss next time.''

This statement, along with Kamoshida's angry growling and lashing out was enough to scare her, making her run into the shadows. Joker let out a breath, glad his gamble had worked. He would've fought if he had to-he understood why Panther and Skull couldnt'-but it wouldn't have felt any less terrible.

''That was great!'' Skull enthused while Panther gave Joker a tremulous smile, thanking him. The boy's response was cut off by Kamoshida's snarl

''Why you-I should've made strangled the life out of myself!''

Skull glowered up at him while Mona's grip tightened on his scimitar ''So you finally admit it, huh? You're the one who sicced those goons on Joker!''

''All I wanted was to get rid of a damn pest but those idiots couldn't even do that right! Just goes to show, if you want something done right, do it yourself!''

Knowing he was responsible was one thing, now the utter lack of remorse didn't even surprise them. Naturally, that didn't mean that it was any less aggravating.

''Oh, yeah? You're not getting away with anything anymore. Captain Kidd, Headbutt!''

''Carmen, Agi!''

''Zorro, Garu!''

''Aladdin, Power Slash!''

The quartet Personas charged together, Aladdin and Captain Kidd landing their attacks first gave the other two the chance to combined their magic for even more power. Kamoshida hit the ground hard as a result. Mona calling for one more All Out Attack, which ended the battle with the Shadow turning human once again.

''No, nggh...'' Shadow Kamoshida groaned as he tried to back away from the quartet. ''...p-please, spare me...!''

''Where's that high and mighty attitude of yours now?'' Skull scoffed. ''Look how many victims you left behind. You got some nerve trying to pull this after what you did to Shiho! You even tried to get Joker killed. We all know it wouldn't have been any skin off your back if he died and all for what, your own petty ego?!''

''I...I just wanted to stamp out any defiance-he was standing out when he should've followed the crowd. He was beginning to change minds...I didn't want to think what sort of influence he could build...''

Panther's kick left him gasping for breath ''And that's enough reason to want someone dead?! You really are scum! Right now, you're in the same position Shiho was in. I bet she and your other victims begged you to stop but of course you never listened. Anything we do to you wouldn't amount to the pain you caused all of them!''

The Shadow could only stammer and beg for his life, shaking like a life. Mona's expression relayed his clear disgust ''Remember our plan, guys. He's despicable but we can't sink to the same level.''

Panther scoffed ''Give me some credit, Mona. I'm not going to kill him...''

His eyes lit up ''Of course! You're so kind...''

But the girl wasn't listening ''...that's letting him off FAR too easily. He's got to pay for what he's done, even if for the rest of his miserable life.''

A stunned Mona had no words for that. He traded a look with Skull, who was just as unnerved by the declaration.

Joker kept his focus on the Shadow ''We had to fight to make sure you won't hurt anyone else. It's high time you repent for all you've done.''

''...Yeah...you're right...it's the least I can do...'' He faded away into light.

''It's okay, he went back to his real self.'' Mona assured the surprised teens. ''We did what we had to-now we should...''

He was cut off as the area shook violently, the walls beginning to break. Skull blanched ''Mona, what gives?!''

''Since we took the treasure, the castle's going to disappear.''

''You couldn't have told us that before?!''

''I'm telling you now, move it!'' He led them out the hall, intending to use Zorro's seal to help them leave only to find that the area where he'd left it was falling apart. ''No choice but the hard way, come on!''

The quartet ran as fast as they could, occasionally changing routes to avoid all the rubble and debris. They were nearing the exit when Skull suddenly fell, the reason becoming clear as he gripped his leg. Wasting no time, Joker and Panther helped the boy up to his feet, quickly leading their way ahead. Within minutes, they made it to the real world.

Panting, Ryuji looked up as the Nav declared that the castle was deleted. ''Wait...so...that's it...? It's gone?''

''Yup.'' Morgana purred in satisfaction. ''Just as I expected, the treasure is the Palace's core. It can't exist without one-we've done what we set out to do.''

''If you say so...''

''Actually, speaking of the treasure, I don't see the crown anywhere...'' Ann blinked.

''Oh, yeah.'' Ryuji dug in his pocket. ''I just grabbed it after the battle was over but...eh?'' His eyes widened as he took out the object, only to find a gold medal. There was so much going on that he hadn't been really paying attention to it. When did this even...? ''The heck?''

''This is what the crown is meant to represent so it took this form when we came back.'' Morgana informed. ''Given what we know about the man, I think this makes sense.''

''Well, whatever this means I'm just glad its over.'' Ann slumped in her seat. ''Are you all right, Subaru? You're pretty quiet.''

The boy's pale complexion gave the answer, showing he was more tired than he let on ''Mm, just...just wondering-what now? From...the way Morgana put it, it isn't immediate, right?''

''Yup. We caused a drastic change in cognition so it needs time to take full effect. Pretty sure Kamoshida's going to be some changes right away though.''

''Are you sure? If this fails, me and Mishima are...!'' Ryuji huffed.

''I know, I know. It'll be fine. You saw the treasure and look how he was acting at the end, the only thing we can do is wait.''

''Try not to worry so much, we'll have to see what comes of this.'' Subaru added.

''Come on, there's no way all that was for nothing. Besides, we kicked that bastard's butt. I thought you'd be so happy you'd shout to the heavens.'' Ann snickered.

''Hey, I'm not that bad!''

''I wonder...'' Morgana drawled, smirking.

Ryuji gave them the evil eye while Subaru shook his head ''Come on, let's not argue now. Bottom line is, we did good. We could all do with some rest anyway.''

Subaru and Morgana made it back only to find that neither Yuri nor Itsuki were home.

''After all that work, we actually did it...'' The boy mused.

Morgana laughed ''I know how you feel. Though it is annoying that we couldn't find more about the incident where he targeted you.''

''I don't mind so long as he doesn't hurt anyone else.'' Subaru lay down. ''Shame about your memories though-we didn't even find anything that could help you...''

Touched, the cat shook his head ''Don't mind that now-let's just enjoy our success.'' The boy nodded but his response was lost as he nodded off, Morgana only smiling and pulling the blanket higher before curling up next to him.

The boy awoke to find himself back in the Velvet Room, approaching the cell's entrance as Lavenza welcomed him.

Igor chuckled when their eyes met ''Putting a stop to the man drowning in the sin of lust proves your growing prowess-well done, dear guest.''

''It was a group effort.'' He returned humbly. ''I'm just glad we put a stop to him. None of this would've even happened if people had just spoken up when they should have. But they're all so apathetic, it's awful.''

Igor inclined his head in agreement, although the mention of apathy tugged at his mind for a reason. He couldn't be sure just what it was though.

''It is indeed as you say. People using each other, hurting one another and seeking the easy way out to their troubles...it happens far too often.'' Lavenza noted. ''However, there are those like you who can stand up and fight when needed. And you know how important that is, yes?''

He nodded, deciding to bring up something that had been on his mind for a few days ''...The way Palaces work...Kamoshida's isn't the only one out there, right?''

''Indeed.'' Igor inclined his head. ''People with many different personalities, thoughts, feelings and circumstances. Naturally, their cognitions vastly differ as well and the same can be said for the distortions.''

''Likewise, there are many out there oppressed by those stronger, believing themselves powerless and unable to make a stand. You and your teammates rose to fight but sad to say, not everyone possesses the willpower to do so.'' Lavenza added.

The boy wasn't surprised, if anything, it felt like it would have been naive to assume that Palaces came and ended with that terrible man. Their situation, while awful, was far from the only injustice out there. His own circumstances were a stark reminder of that.

Well, he did promise to help Morgana and he had no intention of looking away from something he knew was wrong. Burying your head in the sand was never going to change anything, he didn't want to be like that.

''I guess I'll have to deal with what comes my way. I won't go looking for trouble but looking away doesn't solve anything. I won't forget that again.''

Igor chuckled ''Well said, rest assured you will have our support down your path.''

The following day...

Kasumi and Sumire were left appropriately horrified by Ann's story, the girl having brought them up to speed as promised. They knew Ann wouldn't lie about such a thing. Both had met and grew to like Shiho so they completely agreed that whoever pushed her to that extreme was scum of the highest order.

''He's been abusing students and the school just let it slide?'' Kasumi hissed furiously.

''And it's been going on for so long, that's so cruel...it could've been us next...'' Sumire realized, Ann holding back a wince at the valid point. It wasn't unlikely after all, Kamoshida had expressed interest in the girls more than once. Another reason to be glad they had fought back, Kamoshida wouldn't hurt anyone again.

''It sounds like this whole Phantom Thief thing had him spooked. He's never missed a day of school before, right?'' Kasumi received a nod. ''Do you know anything about it, Ann-senpai?''

''About as much as you do.'' As much as she didn't like lying, it couldn't helped. The less they say about the Metaverse, the better. ''Anyway, whatever it really meant, I'm definitely not about to complain, you know?''

''Fair enough, if that's what he's really like then I'm glad someone took it to him.'' After all, the school clearly wasn't going to help. Also, judging by what they learned, going to the police was no good.

The girl couldn't help but wonder though. What did this whole desire stealing thing mean?

Sumire tried to put everything out of her mind and will herself to focus on training. Like her sister, she had quite a few questions about recent events but she knew there wasn't any point mulling them over now. It was looking like whatever the Phantom Thieves did, it was enough to at least take Kamoshida down a peg. Truth be told, it was quite the relief. She felt nothing but disgust, towards him and the school. After all, what did it say about the school that it took such measures for something to be done about that monster?

The girl let out a sigh, mentally shaking herself. This wasn't good, she had to concentrate. She had enough trouble as it were lately, she needed to keep practicing to improve.

It was a short while later that the girl realized she was being watched ''S-Senpai?!''

Subaru waved, having taken to staying near the gym's door and almost out of sight ''Hey, sorry I didn't want to disturb you...''

''N-no, it's okay!'' If anything, a part of her was glad he was here but ''H-how long were you standing there?''

''You must've been into really into it if you didn't notice. For the record, I thought you were really good.''

''R-really?'' A rush of pleasure surged through her ''I was j-just practicing, it's really nothing special.''

''I'd beg to differ. It looked like you were having a good time. You really do love what you do.'' The girl couldn't help smiling and he found himself reflecting on his talk with Ann and Shiho. ''People really shine when they do what they love, isn't that why you're so motivated to improve?''

''Yes but...motivation is one thing, actually making it happen is another.'' Sumire sighed, the boy giving her a quizzical look.

Unbeknownst to the two, Kasumi had arrived with Haru in tow. The first was about to call out to them when her sister carried on ''My efforts just...whatever I do never feels like it's enough.'' The girl lowered her head. ''Nothing compared to Kasumi.''

Aforementioned girl froze at this while Haru cast her a worried glance. Both made sure to stay out of sight as Subaru spoke ''Does this have to do with her reputation?''

Sumire confirmed ''Everyone calls her a prodigy and she's earned it. I don't want to give up our dream but...I'm tired of always falling short. It's like no matter what I do, I won't improve, I'll always be in second place. I want to think I can win-that I can make it to the top...but it just feels like I'm lying to myself.''

Kasumi bit her lip, it wasn't as if she wasn't aware of this issue. Over time, Sumire would unknowingly make a few comments here and there that essentially tipped her off. And it always ticked her off, she hated that her sister felt inferior, that she always had to compare them to each other. She had never once thought of Sumire as someone beneath her. Just the opposite in fact...

Subaru's next words threw all three of them for a loop ''Well, of course it would. You wouldn't ever pull it off...'' Sumire stammered while Kasumi was all set to intervene ''...not with that defeatist mindset. You've basically given up all hope before you started, how can you expect to succeed like that?''

Oh. That was what he meant...

''The other day you asked me about the contests Ryuji mentioned.'' She nodded. ''I'm sure it sounds like a big deal but there were plenty of times when I lost. Do you have any idea how long it took me to get as far as I did? How frustrating it is when I couldn't play like I wanted to or sometimes even when I lost? How many times I felt like calling it quits and never trying again?''

Sumire's eyes widened while Haru looked on interest. Perhaps those two had more in common than it seemed...

''Then...how did you handle it?''

''Oh, I've been where you are. It can happen to anybody...'' His eyes were closed, just talking about this made him think on the days. He knew much of what Sumire felt and it was all the more reason he wanted to help her. ''...but I always reminded myself that it could've been worse. I might have just started to learn music because I couldn't find much to do with my condition but I had a lot of fun. The more I learned, the more I grew to like it. It just made me want to keep going, I never had any big aspirations about it-I'm still not sure I do now-but I don't think it make what I achieved meaningless. Not to me, at least. Which bring me to my next point, what do you want from all this? People can say all they want but at the end of the day, it's your life-it's your dream you want to pursue. I think it's the same for Kasumi.'' Sumire blinked ''I don't get this whole thing about prodigies-sure there are people born with talent but that doesn't mean much without hard work. It's not like prodigies are just given everything on a silver platter.''

The girl couldn't comment, because she knew very well that Kasumi did in fact work hard. They'd both began this road together and often worked with each other, spurring the other on.

Actually, it had been some time since they'd last trained together-hadn't it...? And...that was on her, Kasumi had actually brought it up more than once but she was the one who refused...

''I get the feeling that Kasumi's faced her own struggles too, just because you don't see something doesn't mean it isn't there.'' Subaru shrugged. ''I think it all comes down to how we deal with them.''

Sumire spoke after almost a minute ''...Senpai, can I ask you a favor?'' Subaru nodded, curious ''Would you give me advice? I mean, could you do it again? I...I like talking to you, it gives me a whole new perspective I wouldn't have ever considered before. Like today. You're so kind, you helped me when I was a complete stranger. I know that couldn't have been easy with what happened to you before coming here-I heard from Ryuji-senpai.'' She added at his surprised expression. ''You still care-people hurt you that badly and you still try to reach out and do the right thing. Seeing examples of your courage is really inspiring-I think, with your help I can learn to be strong and maybe solve my trouble with gymnastics. Please? It won't be for nothing, I promise! I-I don't know what I can do in return but...''

''All right, hold on...'' He waved a hand. ''...you're giving me too much credit here. For the record, I'm not expecting anything in return. But if you think I can help you, sure-I'm in.''

The girl's face lit up, Haru and Kasumi sharing relieved glances at the sight ''Thank you so much!''

Subaru looked at the door before them, turning back to his companions. It wasn't like he didn't want to come but given the circumstances, he had to wonder ''Is this really okay?''

''Dude, quit worrying already! You're our friend and I'm sure Shiho would wanna see you!'' Ryuji thumped his back with a grin.

''He's right, besides her parents really want to meet you.'' Ann added brightly, proceeding to ring the doorbell.

The woman both blonds knew to be Suzui Maika proceeded to answer ''Ann-chan! And Ryuji-kun, oh hello...'' She added as her eyes fell on Subaru.

''Didn't I say I'd introduce you, Auntie? That's Subaru.''

She perked up at Ann's words ''Oh...'' Her smile widened before she bowed to the surprised boy. ''...thank you...I can't thank you enough...''

''Ah, wait please...you don't have to...''

Maika's smile was warm when their eyes ''This is nothing. You saved our little girl- that...that monster in human skin nearly broke her. It's thanks to you that we can even see even a bit of hope after all this, words can't express our gratitude.''

Subaru felt his face grow warm at the heartfelt words, barely aware of his teammates happily looking on. ''Y-you're welcome.''

Shiho turned at the knock on her door, calling to come in. Maika entered, leading their guests inside, Ryuji waving ''Yo, Shiho, you're looking plenty better already!''

''You just saw me not even two days ago. There can't be that much of a difference.''

''Nah, I mean it!''

Shaking her head, the girl looked at the others. Ann was about to put in her piece but saw that Shiho wanted to saw something, prompting her to wait. The other girl hesitated, finding her voice after almost a minute ''Namikaze-kun, I...'' She bowed ''...I'm sorry!'' Subaru's eyes widened ''You came to help when I was at my lowest and I...when I think of what I said...''

''It was the truth.'' He cut her off, frowning. ''And let's face it, that was a long time coming. You have nothing to be ashamed of-we know who should be.''

Ann was smiling ''Exactly. See, Shiho, I told you there's nothing to worry about!''

It wasn't long before the tension faded under Ryuji and Ann's enthusiasm, the two clearly more than happy to spend time with their old friend. Subaru and Morgana learned that this was actually the first time they could really sit down together with her. Shiho hadn't been up to seeing visitors at first and too ashamed to face them later. It took the two finally making it very clear that she was still their friend and they certainly weren't about to let that change.

''So, I was a real mess...'' Shiho took over the recounting. ''...and I still am in some ways but...I think...I can pick up the pieces. I was so wrapped up in my pain that it all looked hopeless. Before I knew it, I believed everything...'' She flinched for a moment ''...he said, that I was just worthless and no one would ever help me. That I was nothing compared to him...''

Just when Ann thought she couldn't hate Kamoshida more ''As if! It's the other way around!''

''I think it's safe to say he's already been proven wrong on all acounts.'' Subaru agreed. ''Although, I was wondering, what actually happened after you talked to your parents?''

Ryuji blinked ''Yeah, your dad just looked pissed off to high hell when we talked last time. Lemme guess, the school never listened?'' Shiho nodded, making him groan. ''Of course! It's all about putting the school's damn interests first, huh?! Like what happened to you isn't bad enough, Subaru almost gets killed and they brush it under the table!''

''What? What do you mean...?'' Shiho stared at him with growing shock. They hadn't actually planned to tell her yet, agreeing that she had enough on her plate but there was no helping it now.

The girl's eyes were wide after they brought her up to speed ''Oh, my god-were you okay?'' Subaru reassured her that he was ''How can they just get away with this...? Again...it's just like he said...''

''Like hell.'' Ann said fiercely. ''Don't you dare listen to that pathetic excuse of a human being. He's going to get what's coming to him one of these days. And I think it's about to be sooner than we think...'' She proceeded to explain about the calling cards.

Shiho was understandably confused about the whole thing ''Huh...well, I don't think he's ever missed a day of school so maybe you're on to something...those thieves might have spooked him somehow, at least I hope so. If they got some proof of his actions...''

''I like to think of it as karma.'' Ann put in cheerfully. ''Aren't we overdue for some at school already?''

''More like way overdue but yeah.'' Ryuji added. ''Can't wait to see what comes of this-we'll totally fill you in though, no worries.'' Shiho thanked him ''I mean, I get it-no chance you can just come back there so easily.''

She nodded ''My parents are thinking of a transfer. I don't know what I want yet but at the very least, I can't go back to the school with the way it is now. How can we even trust a school that lets someone like him out and about?''

''Got that right. Can't wait to see that asshole Kobayakawa get what's coming to him.'' He grumbled.

A part of Ann didn't want the girl to transfer but she knew it was selfish. Shiho couldn't just go back after what happened, she understood that ''...Okay, enough of this depressing talk!''

The girl moved the subject by regaling Subaru and Morgana with a few old stories about their times together. Morgana was left snickering as an amused Subaru clarified ''So the first time you met was all because Suzui-san wanted to tell you that your painting sucked?''

Ann nodded, holding back a giggle as Shiho smiled a bit and Ryuji laughed. ''One heck of an impression, huh?''

This was the first of a number of stories the four teens shared. Ann and the others didn't have the heart to ask Subaru about his past given the circumstances. But the boy surprised them by chipping in with some tales of his own, most of which involved his grandparents, Sojiro, Akira and Futaba.

Later, when it was time for them to leave. Shiho approached Subaru ''You were right...it's just like you told me that day. Things changed but it's far from over, I still have people who waited for me, who wanted to help me.''

''Glad to hear it. You've been fighting for so long, it's about time you rest. Maybe find what works for you best from now on, don't forget you have people who care about you again.''

Shiho's smile widened ''I won't. I've still got a long way to go but...with my family...with friends like you guys, I think it's okay.'' She missed the surprise flickering on his face-she thought of him as a friend too?

Shiho took her phone out ''Namikaze-kun, can we exchange contact information?''

''Ah, sure thing.''

I am thou, thou art I

Thou hast established a new vow

It shall become the wings of rebellion

That breaketh thy chains of captivity

With the birth of the Temperance Arcana,

I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and a new power...

Morgana couldn't help but stare. Just what on earth was that supposed to be?

He'd gone with the Namikazes out for dinner, going to the monjayaki shop per Itsuki's suggestion. Everything was fine and the food was actually pretty good, strange as it may have seemed at first.

The reason for his befuddlement was Itsuki's monjayaki. He knew the food came in different shapes and mixes but...how could he think any of those ingredients tasted good together?

Yuri's next words proved that she was thinking on the same lines ''Honestly, and you wonder why Sojiro and Akira insist that your tastebuds are dead.''

''Aw, don't knock it until you try. Here, Morgana, go on.'' Itsuki held out a piece, only to be surprised when Morgana's eyes narrowed and he headed closer to the other two.

''There's a good cat, I knew you were smart.'' Yuri patted his head, the three sharing amused glances as Itsuki harrumphed. ''Now for some actually normal food...'' Morgana held back a laugh, happily eating her offered pieces.

Subaru, who had taken to following Yuri's instructions while making the food, found himself thinking back to his earlier idea on learning more about cooking. He made a mental note to look into that again soon. Itsuki decided to move things along by asking what was going on school, leading to him explaining about the Calling Cards.

Sharing a curious look with his wife, he mused out loud ''Well, Calling Cards are pretty much a phantom thief staple. I wonder what they could've gotten on that scumbag. It'd be great to see him getting some comeuppance without the higher ups covering his sorry behind again.''

Before Subaru could question this, Yuri spoke up ''We've been looking into this ever since you were attacked, There's actually a lot of stories if you just look in the right place. People just gave it up as a bad job and look away to follow the crowd. I'm sorry...'' He blinked. ''...if it were up to us, we'd take you out of that school in a heartbeat. Leaving you around that awful man makes me want to throw up, but as it were-we failed you.''

How could she even think...? Subaru wasn't going to let this carry on any further ''No, you didn't. Absolutely not. I'm glad to be here now and it's all thanks to you two. You were there for me when I thought I had no one and I can't begin to describe how much that means. I wouldn't have this any other way.''

Itsuki looked pleased ''Good, because we wouldn't either. You're stuck with us, kiddo!''

''There's no place I'd rather be.'' The statement made Yuri smile while Morgana looked on. Those three had been through their rough spots but they always had each other's backs. They'd be just fine, he was sure of it.

Shortly after they returned home...

''I thought you were going to bed.'' Morgana noted with surprise as Subaru continued to write, hopping to the desk to see what he was up to.

''I am-I just need to finish this...'' He did so in a few minutes, folding the paper carefully into an envelope. That was when Morgana spotted the name on the envelope, remembering their talk the other day.

''Oh, so you figured out a way forward after all. Nice, go for it!''

The name of the recipient? Futaba Sakura.

Well, let's stop here.

So that's that for this palace. To clarify, Subaru just felt nervous about coming for a visit since he barely knew Shiho and he definitely didn't the warm welcome or Shiho calling him a friend. Yuri and Itsuki have of course been trying to get to the bottom of the incident but they keep getting blocked by Kobayakawa. Ryuji and Ann briefed them in so they know about Kamoshida being behind it and they agree that it makes sense, they just can't prove anything. If it wasn't for the probation, they wouldn't let Subaru stay there for a minute longer-especially with Kamoshida around.

The situation with the Velvet Room is different here than in Twilight so there won't be a confidant with Igor, the Aeon Arcana is going to be with someone else. Subaru's attempts to reach out to Futaba start from the next chapter and I want to show some of her perspective from that point on.

Welp, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
