And we are back with another chapter, things have just been crazy for me, so much so that I've barely been able to write anything these last couple of months, most of the time I normally put towards FF I've put towards actually writing a book which is SO MUCH harder than I thought, so I can totally see why we're lucky if an author puts out someone every few years as I have to be careful not to make it too long, make sure it's engaging all the time, that I'm not pointlessly holding back info or turning entire pages into info dumps, it's hard. Still, I find comfort in writing stuff like this, more so since I'm drawing a lot of inspiration for this story in particular from Kaguya-Sama which is one of my favorite anime of this year. Yeah, Bleach made its return but if I have to choose between it and say, Spy x Family-well, you don't need to be a telepath to know I'm gonna pick the wholesome spy comedy almost every time.
Chapter 5: First day of School
(Previously)
"Can we exchange numbers, I really want to stay in contact with you, you know…" She couldn't back down now, even as her cheeks grew flushed for more reasons than the cold. "Like friends." Yoarashi was silent for a moment, not knowing what to say, having never had this kind of encounter where someone messes up like he did, yet they're forgiven just like that. He looked into her eyes, and just like before, he saw a fire in her but…one that was more welcoming than it had before. He didn't know what to make of what he was feeling, but he did know one thing.
This girl…had a fire in her like he hadn't ever seen.
"It'll be my pleasure, Midoriya." He took her phone into his hands, finding the fact her case was not only Mirko merch with little white ears atop it, but it was covered in Recovery Girl style stickers, he would have to ask her where she got them, but that could come later as he finished putting in his contact info. He quickly handed her his own, with her giggling at how he had gotten one with a stylized wind current on the back, but she didn't say more as she put in her info and handed back his phone with a blush.
The two stood in silence for a minute after this, not knowing what to say as while Yoarashi had friends, he had never had a female one thanks to his eccentricities driving most off, while Izuku hadn't made a friend in years, this being the first time she had exchanged her number with someone her age! Both were deeply shy about what to do next, but eventually, Midoriya worked up the nerve to make another move. "Now, come down here." She told him, gesturing for him to lower himself to her level.
"Why?" Yoarashi asked her, confused to which she only giggled, he didn't know why but he really wanted to hear her make that sound more often.
"Just do it." She gave him a smile that sent fire through him, but not the one he was used to experiencing whenever he saw something he found cool. Still, he acquiesced to her demands, bending his knees a bit and lowering his head to her level.
"Oh, okay." Once there, she reached for his head, he didn't need to have female friends to know what normally came next. 'Is she going to-!' He thought that things would need to move a hell of a lot slower than this, however, whatever he thought was going to happen didn't as she ripped his beanie off his head, letting her see his self-inflicted wounds once more.
"I can't believe you went and reopened some of your cuts, not only that, you have whole new ones!" She admonished him as she reached for her bag, totally missing the shocked face he had going on as she turned back to him, this time with a flashlight to get a better view. "You have to stop doing that!"
"S-sorry!" He couldn't help but blush at that as she kept on looking him over, taking them to another bench so that she could get a better look without having him bend to her level.
She missed that train home, but she didn't really mind.
(And now)
'Okay, I have my bag, my books, wallet, handkerchief, travel-sized first aid kit, yep, that's everything.' Izuku thought to herself as she looked herself over, she had dreamed about this for years but here she was, all dressed up in her Shiketsu uniform, her white dress shirt freshly ironed, her dark jacket and skirt as clean as they could be. She also left her hair loose to better fit on the mandatory hat as if she had tried to wear it with her top-bun, it would have looked off, to say the least.
At present, Izuku was standing by the door to a different apartment, having had to move into this small but comfortable single-bedroom apartment to be closer to school as there would be no way she could take the train to and from school every day, not unless she wanted to wake up over 2 hours earlier than usual to get ready and not be late for school. Still, while they did find a good deal for the place with a landlord who didn't mind all her plants, it was quite the experience for her, being away from home and her mother's voice as she had gotten used to hearing her wishing her well before she left for school.
"I'm going to miss hearing her, I hope she's doing alright by herself." Izuku smiled to herself, making a note that once she got home after classes, she'll call her before she watered her plants. With a smile on her face, she left her apartment and climbed down the single flight of stairs to get to ground level before she skipped towards the bus stop, as she made her way there, she run into some people who recognized her uniform and stopped her to tell her to do her best or wish her luck, all of which she received with a smile and a wave as she couldn't wait to start her first day, especially since she had already made a friend before in the form of the loud but very passionate Yoarashi, speaking of.
"Midoriya!" She looked towards her friend near stampeding towards her, like her he was extremely excited for the day if his wide smile was anything to go off of.
"Morning, Yoarashi." Izuku greeted him once had met up with her at the bus stop. "Ready for our first day?"
"You know it, I could barely sleep with how much energy I have to burn." Yoarashi hadn't been able to sit still for the past few days due to the excitement, this was his first step towards becoming the hot-blooded pro he's dreamed of being since he was a kid. The only times he had managed to remain calm was during his texting sessions with Midoriya as the two had remained in close contact since they exchanged numbers and while the two would have wanted to perhaps live in the same complex or share one since he too had to move, they had learned that her place had a history of housing girls attending Shiketsu and the landlord had a pretty strict rule about no-boys as to help enforce the school's 'no dating' policy.
"Can't say I wasn't looking forward to this either. It's just a shame that our classes aren't that close to each other." Midoriya was a little saddened that they'll only see each other during lunch period.
"Yeah, but at least you're not as far from us as the business classes are." Yoarashi calmed down a little as the bus arrived, with the two flashing their student IDs to the driver who allowed them entry once the system confirmed this, at least they didn't need to pay as the bus was part of their school fees, taking one of the few remaining twin seats, the two continued their conversation.
"Hmm, did you see the latest Edgeshot news?" Midoriya asked.
"Of course, I did, I was amazing! He took down those bank robbers before they could react, and ensured no one was harmed, it was such a performance I had to do some push-ups from the excitement!" It had happened during the late evening just as the bank was closing up, which was why the news only reported it at around 9pm, she had just been channel serving, trying to find something good to watch when she had stumbled into it.
"Yeah, it's a shame he avoids the cameras but I suppose he wouldn't be the ninja hero if he was always seen as he worked, he must have just been passing by when this happened." The hero nerd in her wished that she had more footage and stories about him, but she could respect a man that put his job over his popularity. Sure, he wasn't an underground hero but he wasn't one that was seen all that much and with his quirk, he could move just about anywhere without anyone being the wiser. She did wonder if he had to take a medical class to perform half the take-downs he did as pocking holes in people, even small ones weren't the best idea for non-lethal take-downs, not unless he knew where he could and couldn't hit without needlessly endangering his target's life.
"Yeah, probably since it looked like Crust was going to handle it but like a champ, he didn't mind it being done before he got there." Yoarashi loved Crust, seeing the man as his favorite hero as the man shared many of his views and qualities. The two kept on discussing local hero news the entire trip to the school, where they had to part ways to make sure they made it to their respective classes. Midoriya was just lucky that the school provided a virtual tour of the place, along with a map to new students like them else she would have gotten lost three times over in its many halls, stairways, and gardens. As she made her way to her class, she did find it strange that, unlike the other classes that grouped up students into 20, the medical track split that into classes of 10 with 1-F being made up of those who got in through recommendations.
Within a few minutes, she finally found her destination, with the short girl looking up towards the gigantic door that was well over 4m tall and 3m across, it was clearly built to allow even the most physically imposing students to enter but that left her with two thoughts, the first being that she hoped she didn't need to struggle to open it and the second being the funny mental image of an absolute giant of a man seating quietly in the back as they learned. Lucky for her, when she reached to open it, she found that she didn't need all that much effort which was a minor blessing. Inside, she found most of her future classmates already present, she spoted Kocho seated in the second row, but she seemed to be in a conversation so she didn't wish to intrude. She observed her classmates and found that they had at least 3 mutant types with them with the rest either being emitter or transformation types. Regardless, she quietly took her seat and waited for the teacher to appear while she looked up some news on her phone.
"Should I be offended?" Izuku looked up, or rather straight ahead as a smiling Kocho, the girl had approached her desk when she wasn't paying attention and while she looked like an elementary kid playing dress-up, Izuku kept that thought to herself as she could detect a familiar feeling of fury from the smiling teen. "You didn't greet me when you came in."
"Oh, sorry about that, I didn't want to interrupt your conversation." With her explanation, Kocho seemed to calm down somewhat as her smile gained some sincerity to it.
"Hush now, it's never an interruption to greet others." Kocho reprimanded her as she would have loved to include Midoriya in the conversation she was having with Sequen, they did share similar interests from what she could tell. Oh, she would love for the three to become friends, they were such honest people.
"I'll do my best to remember that the next time, how have you been?" Midoriya chuckled as she still felt small next to this heiress who mostly got more pocket money to spend in a week than she did in 6 months, but then again, she was painfully aware of the fact she was most likely the poorest one here considering how many came from elite prep schools.
"Things have been quiet, when I got my letter, my parents hosted a little party to celebrate. I would have invited you but I didn't have your number, an error I would like to correct now." Kocho signed as she loved her parents, she really did but sometimes they could just be a tad overbearing or blind to the situation as she didn't think hosting a dinner party where most guests were twice her age and thrice her size was what you could call 'fun'. Still, she had her chance to make it so that the next time such good news arrives, she can invite people she likes instead, which was why she held out her phone, its blue, purple, and white case having a lovely nature pattern to it.
"S-sure!" Midoriya squeaked out as she exchanged numbers, barely keeping the squeal of 'Another friend!' She couldn't believe her luck, maybe she was on a roll!
"When it came to your performance, I must say I was surprised to see you work with a villain patient." And with that, her mood lowered a bit as she could recall how others viewed her choice that day, and how frustrating it was to have to deal with it.
"Was that wrong?" If Kocho felt that it was, her face didn't show it as she kept her pleasant smile on the entire time.
"Not at all, it merely caught me off guard as I would have prioritized the others but medical care doesn't discriminate, after-all even prisoners on death row deserve to see a doctor if they're ill," Kocho explained as if she were speaking about the weather, which was kinda unnerving to the taller girl if she was honest.
'That's a very concerning way to put it.' Midoriya thought to herself, wondering why she had to make that comparison out of all of them, but she considers this a win as she was technically agreeing with her. "Yeah, we gotta stick to our principles else we'll start breaking them whenever it is convenient for us."
"Rules exist for a reason after all." Kocho smiled as she clapped her hands together, happy that they were on the same page. At that moment, the door opened up once more as a familiar face walked up to the front of the class, standing behind the desk that lay there. With her arrival, the other 8 students quieted down as Kocho quickly made her way back to her desk, which allowed Izuku to see that while she was in her own little world, the rest of the missing students had also arrived.
"Alright students, settle down. As we have already met, I'll skip introductions, but for the next year, I'll be your homeroom teacher. I hope we can get along and create a functional relationship." Mother Nature stated as she looked over the small class.
"Yes, mam!" With their response, she nodded her head as she stood a little straighter.
"Good, with that settled, please form into an orderly line as we get out to first-year orientation." With that, the class stood up and quickly formed a line, the benefits of having half the normal number but Midoriya didn't pay it too much mind as they walked towards the first-year auditorium. As this was quite the walk thanks to the distance, they did meet up with not just their sister class which seemed to watch them with… an air of envy? But they also saw other classes such as those from support and business, she even managed to catch the eye of Yoarashi's class but they could only smile and save in the current situation. The auditorium proved to just be the hall from the entrance exam, though it was still as imposing and large as she remembered it if not more so. Once they had settled into their seats, they all turned their gaze towards the front where not just their teachers stood observing them, but the yellow and tentacled principal also stood, his frame being much larger than the acceptance letter making him out to be as he was at least 8 feet compared to Li-Bee who stood next to him.
With the place quiet, the smiling principal moved forward toward the microphone. "Greetings, greetings our freshmen students, I am Jun Strait, the principal of this fine institution of learning. Allow me to be the first to reach out a welcoming tentacle or two towards you all as you all take your first steps to become the people you wish to be." He started, his voice carrying over them with its jubilant, teasing tone.
"Now, while I could give you all a speech with parts coded for each of the five courses, that doesn't seem as fun." He chuckled at his own joke as some of the teachers looked like they wanted to groan, was this a usual thing for him? "After all, why should it matter that track you all chose, I don't know about you but I never got the memo about something silly like those in the hero course being better or worth more than others." Midoriya felt herself sit a little straighter at that, she loved heroes but she didn't like how so many put all their stock into them and when kids wanted to say, become a doctor, they were treated like it was a strange dream.
"No, each and everyone one of you is a shiny little golden egg, each near bursting with potential and it is through your three years with us, that your potential will be unlocked and allow you all to emerge into society as truly wonderful octopi." As this, the principal giggled as he waves his tentacles about, getting some laughs from the students with Midoriya having a smile on her face from it.
"Now, while it is true that my old nemesis, Nezu runs his school different from the rest, I've never been one to let my rivals one-up me, which is why Shiketsu has also done away with pointless rules and norms that your former peers studying at other schools will have to deal with, one of those being that one can't take more than one course," She was actually waiting for that, as while her letter of acceptance to the support course had said they'll create a special timetable for her, she didn't know how the school would address this. Still, she had no idea he and Nezu had some kind of rivalry.
"Afterall, if one has the talent and commitment, why should they be barred from going for it? I don't know about you, but I love old comic books and the idea of a hero by night and a lawyer by day has always been attractive to me. Sure, pros have already stacked time-tables with all the work they have to do, but it should be obvious to anyone of you with functional brains, which I know you all have since you're standing here," He laughed at his own joke as the screen behind him flashed on, showing the faces of more than a few pros, many Midoriya recognized.
"That our modern world isn't so neatly defined-Uwabami runs a make-up business, Present Mic hosts his own radio show, Recovery Girl works in the ER at many hospitals in Kanto, and so many other pros like myself and the teaching staff for the hero course are still heroes outside these honored halls. So, to the notion that one can't become an engineer and a doctor, I say it's hogwash." With that said, the screen cleared once more as he directed all attention toward himself.
"I hope that each of you takes my words to heart and that you carry yourself with dignity, grace, and confidence, now if you'll excuse me, I have to appear at the 2nd year's orientation in a few minutes, tottles!" Midoriya didn't even have time to blink before he was gone, the door leading out from the stage still swinging shut by the time she focused on it.
"I didn't know we're going to have such an eccentric principal," Midoriya muttered aloud as she was expecting many things from her new school, a octopus with superspeed wasn't one of them.
"Well, at least we're not going to have a boring high school career." Her classmate whose name she had yet to learn replied to her statement.
After around 20 minutes, the students were instructed to return to their home room to finish up the final steps of orientation. In the time they spent in the auditorium, they were given a run-down of the school rules, which included the one about how relationships were forbidden, what to do about bullying, where the counselor's office was, and how they could approach them at any time during the school day and for another 2 hours after the fact. When it came down to class reps, they were told that they'll have a week to elect their class rep and vice representatives but unlike middle school, the student council would only be open to those who were chosen as reps but how they shouldn't worry about that too much as 2nd and 3rd years commonly take most of the more important seats.
With that done, they were back in class as Mother Nature took her position at the front once more. "Alright, the last bits we need to focus on will be introductions if all goes well, you're going to be seeing the faces here for the next 3 years, so in order of seat, I want each of you to come up here and tell us your name, your quirk and a fun little detail about yourself."
'Oh no, not this.' Midoriya felt herself sweat as she hated these kinds of things, and how it always seemed to go the same way as soon as she would have to reveal she didn't have a quirk. Still, while she tried to pump herself up, the first of her classmates stood and walked to the front of the class, she was shorter than her, to the point Izuku would be able to easily see over her head but she carried herself with an excited skip to her step. Her blue eyes seemed to express just how kind and open she was while her short blonde hair shined. However, one detail that was unique to her was the fact that she wasn't wearing a cap like the rest of them and rather was wearing a black and blue veil.
"Greeting everyone, my name is Ichimichi Iris. My quirk is called Downplay which allows me to minimize things like injuries, fires, stones, and so on. I can't make things disappear though. I suppose two things about me I think are pretty neat would be how I was born and raised in Hawaii, and my love for sheep with how fluffy and adorable they are. I hope we all get along as classmates and friends." Ichimichi smiled as the class clapped while she retook her seat. The next person was much larger than both her and Midoriya, having an impressive size that must have been 2m at least, though he was a bit on the skinny side. His fawn hair was much messier, with him needing to adjust his cap a few times to ensure it stayed on his head while his pupilless green eyes seem to stare right through you.
"Morning. The name's Utsushimi Kenji. My quirk is called Vitality Mist, basically, I can share my energy with others which you can imagine would well really well in recovery and search and rescue, I have a lot of it so consider me your field support guy. I'm my own man so I would like you to all treat me as such, also if any of you a-holes try to ask about my sister, you're regret it." Midoriya didn't know what to make of his delivery as he sounded like he was reading this off some prompter and was barely interested in being there. Still, his quirk did sound extremely useful as it would mean that heroes and first responders could work for much longer and allow for victims of villain attacks and disasters to remain strong enough for them to be saved or taken to the hospital.
"You do that often?"
"Yep!" Midoriya nearly fell out of her seat as she looked towards her side towards the guy that just spoke up, his crimson eyes looking surprised at her reaction and what was worse was that he wasn't the only one as the entire room was now focused on her.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare yer, you were just a tiny bit distracting there with the muttering." His Japanese may have been fine, but his American accent was as thick as a brick even as he sounded apologetic for surprising her out of her muttering spree. With her face as red as a tomato, she looked towards the student whose quirk she had just spent the last 20 seconds speaking about in a way she had been told more than once, was a bit creepy.
"Sorry," Midoriya muttered as she couldn't even look him in the eye, rather focusing on the floor.
"No harm, no foul."
"If that was all, let's continue." Utsushimi, thankfully, was as blasé as he was when he gave his introduction bit and didn't seem to care that she was analyzing him.
"If that is all," Mother Nature's eye seem to focus on her but not with the malicious or annoyed intent of her previous teachers, more like she was more amused by her little incident than anything else. "Let us continue." The third person to take to the front was also a girl, a little shorter than Izuku with short, boyish black hair and bright yellow eyes that seemed to analyze the world around her, always trying to learn something new. She did a little bow once she stood in front of them.
"Morning to you. I am Kayoko Huang. My quirk is called Serpent's cross. I can conjure a snake of fire that can enter into a patient's body and amplify the regeneration of the body by accelerating cell division. Doing so allows me to can cure diseases, heal wounds and treat diverse symptoms though there is a limit on what I can and can't do so if you lost a finger unless you have it to be reattached, I can only help the wound close up." To demonstrate this, she summoned forth the snake in question which as she said, was made from brilliant yellow and orange flames but it didn't seem to bun her or her uniform as he coiled around her arm as a pet snake would. She didn't let it last before she canceled her power, sending the creature back into oblivion.
"I'm a fan of legal dramas and enjoy calm afternoons with a good book and a cup of tea, thank you." With that, she retook her seat, with some of the others quietly speaking about just how powerful her quirk was as healing quirks were almost as rare as teleportation or warp quirks and highly prized.
'Very formal.' Midoriya thought as while Utsushimi gave the impression of not wanting to be there, Huang gave one that implied that she had practiced that little introduction to an exact science to ensure it had no flaws and did what it was meant to. Shinobu came 4th in as she walked to the front.
"Good morning. I am Shinobu Kocho. My quirk is called Butterfly which allows me to create up to 100 butterflies from my own stamina which can then be loaded up with a multitude of medicines that I use to help treat people. One thing that most don't know about me is that I love death metal." With that, Kocho took her seat once more, smiling all the while as Midoriya hadn't realized she had such an interest but she supposed that she would need an outlet for all that anger she suspected was underneath the surface.
The 5th person walked towards the front of the class with a fiery mane of dark red hair, that along with his bright blue eyes made him look like he was related to the number 2 but he didn't share his face, with a more for a lack of a better word, passive facial structure with the addition of a blue rose tattoo on his red cheek. "I'm Sequen Takeru. My quirk is called Herbalist which allows me to grow a number of different kinds of herbs from my body, they don't need to actually exist so I've trained to create ones that can be used to treat injuries, shock, and other ailments. What could be a given considering my quirk is that I like to garden." To prove his point, he used his quirk to create small vines from his hands which at their ends, created small pink and purple bulks which he handed out to everyone, explaining that it was just a mild stimulant like coffee and when Midoriya tasted it, she could agree with that as it even had the benefit of not having that coffee taste, being sweater.
Fifth on the list was the same American that had gotten her back down to Earth, unlike the others who had hair, and in one case, that being Sequen's of having too much, he either kept his hair incredible short or he was bald as Midoriya couldn't make out anything with his cape firmly on his head, that combined with his taller than average build made him look like he wouldn't be out of place amongst the 3rd years. Still, as he turned to face the class with a booming smile filled with teeth, he gave this kind elder brother energy to him which seemed to calm you down. "What up, my people? The name's Maxey Sakamoto, no wait, I mean it's Sakamoto Maxey. Sorry, while my mother is Japanese, I was born and raised in San Diego so some things will pass right on by me so please don't take it to heart. My quirk is pretty straightforward, it is called Infrared and it allows me to well, see in infrared. While I totally respect Kocho's preference in music, I'm the kind that listens to whatever fits the mood, you know?"
With his piece said, and a wave from Kocho at the music comment, Sakamoto took his seat next to her and mouthed a good luck her way which she appreciated as he most likely caught on to the fact, she was nervous about this. Seventh to appear, and the last person before Izuku got up, their long orange hair tied into 8 separate ponytails which seemed like a hassle to have to deal with while their blank sky-blue eyes seemed to stare through them all, but at the same time, see all of them. "Greetings, my name is Nakamura Junichi. My quirk is called Greed which allows me to multiple any non-living object within a certain radius of myself. The rate of that multiplication is dependent on the size of the object, the larger the target, the longer and more effort it takes." "Oh, I'm into old school Looney tunes and animation in general."
'Okay, the moment of truth, remember your lesson, Izuku.' Midoriya thought to herself as she got up and marches as confidently as she could to the front, using every skill she had learned for her social anxiety as she stood in front of these people, new people who she had to believe would be better than the ones she used to go to school with. "H-hello. My name is Midoriya Izuku, I…I'm a really big hero fan, I really love discussing quirks and how they can be improved and trained. I also like stargazing." She didn't say more as she started moving back towards her desk but Sequen spoke up.
"You didn't give us your quirk." At his statement, she paused as Mother Nature looked towards her, her eyes filled with concern, not that Midoriya would have seen this as her back was to her. She wouldn't have seen any of their reactions as she was looking towards her feet instead.
"…I don't have one." She managed to whisper out, though, with everyone quiet, they all heard it nonetheless which left them all shocked, why wouldn't it? Despite the fact global trends painted the population as 80% quirkless, in Japan it was closer to 90%. With most quirkless being 60 and older, she painfully understood how much of an oddity she was in this day and age, the product of two parents who just happened to carry the quirkless gene.
"Hey," Before she could lose herself to a particularly horrible encounter with a quirk supremacist who happened to be the mother of one of her old classmates, once more, Sakamoto brought her back down to earth. When she turned towards him, she couldn't help but focus on how bright and kind his crimson eyes were. "I don't know what you think about me but let me lay it straight. If you managed to get into Shiketsu, you're alright in my books." He whispered to her with a little smile which could only be one born from honesty as she felt herself calming down.
"T-thanks." She whispered back as the 9th student was busy giving their introduction, though all she caught was their name, Mignogna Susumu.
"No prob, and if anyone tries to give your trouble, come find me and I'll set them straight." Sakomoto joked as he did a little flex under the table which left her smiling a bit.
"With your words." At her question, he didn't downright deny it.
"Preferable." Served as his answer but she supposed that it was better than him running around getting into fights with people for her sake.
And we are done! That was a little easier to write than I thought but it didn't need to have anything too serious happen, I think it serves as a good introduction to Shiketsu as while the school seems to be much stricter than UA, we're seen three of their four students to be pretty chill and from what I could find on the wiki page(I'm an anime only) the only real rules I would say are kinda restrictive would be the fact you have to wear that cap-even with your hero gear, and the fact they can't get involved romantically with other students.
Kkmememesha: It was on achieveofourown, I looked for it and found it, it's called Compulsion, and it's written by the user PolarKarma.
UzumakiKido: Thanks.
Reaperofages: The wait is over, hope you liked the chapter.
