Pokenatural Chapter 2 - Dean Always Knew Sam's Puppy-Dog-Eyes were a Superpower
Dean was relieved when the table fell silent. He had somehow overeaten, squeezed out an explanation, and discovered what kind of trouble he had landed himself in.
One thing for sure was that he was far far away from being anywhere near America. In fact, he probably wasn't even on earth anymore. Or at least not his version of Earth. He hadn't ever heard of different dimensions but Dean supposed that if time travel was possible - anything was possible.
Back to the matter at hand, however, in this world, Pokemon were animals similar to pets - but defiantly more intelligent. They were used in battling and it was like a sport here. He had watched a brief battle between Ash and Clemont and he couldn't help but be impressed by the control and synchronization between trainer and Pokemon.
He would be lying if he said that he wasn't interested in participating in a Pokemon battle himself. Of course, he would need a Pokemon but he wasn't sure if he wanted that type of responsibility. After all, he already had Sam and while looking after his brother was never a chore he missed the days when both of them had been in sync completely with one another. Ever since Dean had died and gone to hell nothing had been the same. They had lost total confidence in one another and even after Sam had returned from his own stint in hell he had been distant and without a soul.
With his brother's soul now firmly back in place, he could still feel the disconnect and the fear that he always carried around that the Great Wall of sam would fall and bring all of his brother's Hell memories rushing in. Dean wished that his brother would again trust him to do what Dean did best - Look after Sammy.
"Hey, are you alright?" Serena asked startling Dean out of his musings. He reached behind him for his gun but had to lower his hand when he realized that it wasn't there. The girl hadn't noticed and Dean was happy that kids were clueless. He figured that was just another good reason to have a Pokemon. He felt disadvantaged. If he were to end up in a fight he just knew that it wouldn't be pretty.
"I'm alright Serena," Dean said as he threw on a smile that could fool anyone. "When are we going to get going?" The small group had offered Dean a place with them while traveling, and Dean unusually unsure didn't want to be left entirely alone in a strange world agreed.
"I think that we're going to be here for a few more days. There are some things that we need to get restocked with for the trip and we need to get you some gear for camping out since you lost all of yours." She gave Dean a smile and he laughed nervously.
"I don't really do camping." She gave a laugh of her own at his answer. 'When did telling little white lies become this hard'. He really needed Sam here. He was way better at talking to people. Though if he was being honest with himself neither he nor his brother were the most social. Castiel and Bobby and being the only two that they had constantly kept in contact with.
"Camping isn't so bad," Serena said still laughing. "I didn't want to be outside at night at all when I first started out, but camping out has taught me a lot about myself and my Pokemon." She stood as Bonnie came racing over. "Why don't I take you and Bonnie shopping while Ash and Clemont keep training?"
"Oh, that's a great idea" Bonnie exclaimed, "we can get you some awesome stuff!" Dean grimaced and gave a crooked smile.
"Just the essentials will be fine, I like to travel light" Both girls looked a bit disappointed at his answer, and Bonnie's bright smile turned into an exaggerated pout.
"Aw, I wanted to get you a Pokemon onesie!"
Dean could feel his face turning a bright red. 'I'm a grown-ass man, a robe is one thing, but no one is ever going to see me in a onesie - teenager or not!' "Sorry Bonnie, but I think I'll stick with traditional pajamas."
—
The group had been at the Pokemon Center for a few days in and out training and going shopping in the nearby small town. Dean learned a lot more about Pokemon battling and despite worrying about Sam and feeling a constant itch that he need to find his brother he couldn't leave Ash and the others. For some reason his every instinct said that he needed to stay with them. However, it seemed that the longer they stayed the busier the Pokemon Center became.
"Hey is this normal?" Dean couldn't help but ask one morning as they sat eating breakfast. Trainer after trainer had been coming in with Pokemon in various states of defeat.
"I don't think so" Clemont answered as he watched a trainer rush up to Nurse Joy with an injured Pancham clutched tightly in their arms. "I've never seen Nurse Joy this frazzled ever."
"Maybe if we figure out what is going on, we can help stop the constant flow of Pokemon coming in to be treated.
"That's a great idea" Bonnie praised "My big brother is so amazing!" (Dean would be lying if he said he didn't miss Sam looking at him that way). The group finished eating and made their way up to the desk only to be overtaken by another trainer.
"Nurse Joy! Please help my Pokemon!" The Pink Haired caretaker rushed up to the trainer. "Please take your Pokemon out so I can do a quick assessment, we are almost at full capacity, and I may have to send you to another center in town."
"Right!" The trainer pulled out a Pokeball and threw it up. Dean was amazed to see a dragon-like creature come out of the tiny ball.
"It's a Charizard!" Ash exclaimed surprised. "It looks in pretty bad shape too"
"Pika-Pika" Pikachu exclaimed.
"Wow, it took quite a lot of damage" Clemont sounded surprised and Dean took it that this type of Pokemon usually was the one that did the injuring.
Nurse Joy took one look at the Charizard and rushed it back to get patched up leaving the trainer to congregate with several others that had come in with other Pokemon in various states of injury.
"Let's go talk to the other trainers" Serena suggested.
"That's a great idea!" Ash answered. "Hey, I'm Ash, what exactly is going on over here." Dean had to admire Ash's ability to get straight to the point.
The small group gathered around with the various other trainers. "I'm Sean, and this is Grace, Martha, and Cooper, there's a Pokemon in the forest that is injured and refuses to be treated."
"I was the first one to find it" Grace spoke up from the back, "I found an abandoned Pokeball and let it out. It was an Eevee."
The group did a double take and Dean took it that Eevee wasn't a Pokemon that normally did a lot of damage. "An Eevee did that to your Charizard" Clemont exclaimed shocked.
Sean was quick to defend himself, "It's not a normal Eevee! It has eyes like I've never seen before -"
He was cut off by another trainer, "Its eyes are a greenish-brown and its fur is super long unlike any Eevee I've ever seen -"
"It's got weird marking all over it -"
"like scars or something -"
"It won't let anyone near it -"
"Let alone touch it."
"Rumor has it that its trainer abandoned it -"
"It's way too picky -"
"Refused to go back into its Poke-ball -"
"It doesn't have a trainer anymore -"
"It makes weird faces like it's pissed off or something-"
"But that's only if you're able to catch a glimpse."
"Anyone who is able to catch it would be lucky to have it -"
"Did you hear it's injured and was able to defeat my Charizard -"
"And my Blaziken-"
'
"No really, I didn't think that an Eevee would be able to do anything like that without evolving."
"Just think what it could do at full strength!"
The more Dean listened to the conversation being tossed around, the more his bad feeling grew. He hoped that he was wrong but Winchester's luck usually wasn't kind. From what little he had learned it sounded like Sammy had drawn the short end of the stick and was now one of these so-called Pokemon that he had learned so much about over the last few days. 'Wow Sammy, talk about bad luck little brother. Don't worry, I'm coming.
"Hey, Dean are you ok?" Clemont asked noticing the look of resolve that had crossed his new friend's face.
"I need to go see that Pokemon" Dean said with conviction leaving out that it was probably his little brother who had drawn the short end of the stick - that was usually Dean's department.
"Dean's right" Ash jumped in, "If Eevee's injured, it needs help!"
"Right, So what are we waiting for, let's go!" Bonnie cheered already rushing toward the entrance doors of the building.
"Bonnie wait for us!" The group rushed out after the little girl and Dean couldn't help but like them even more. They may not have a plan but they had heart. 'Well if that wasn't a boatload of cheese I don't know what is - Great now I'm having chick flick moments with myself. This mysterious Eevee better be you, Sammy. My radar is going crazy.' He wasn't quite sure what an Eevee looked like, but if any of the other Pokemon he had witnessed over the past few days were an indicator Sam could look like anything.
The group of five made it to the forest, "where do we begin looking?" Serena asked. An explosion rocked the trees in answer.
"Follow that smoke!" Ash exclaimed, Pikachu racing after him. Dean was hot on his trail. He was tempted to start calling for his brother but that would raise too many questions - ones that he was unsure how to answer.
It didn't take long for them to reach the source. They were shocked at the sight. A group of three trainers had the wayward Eevee cornered between a cliff wall. It was outnumbered and looked to be on its last leg.
"It looks like it hasn't eaten in days" Serena whispered with sad eyes. The group didn't want to bring attention to themselves just yet.
"Its back leg looks broken as well!" Ash exclaimed not bothering to lower his voice. "This is wrong!" He took a step forward but Clemont held him back.
"We can't do anything right now with these other trainers in the way."
Dean clenched his teeth hands curling tightly into fists. 'Damit. That is Sam.'
Dean would recognize his little brother anywhere. He'd be ashamed if he didn't, because the furry little creature that his kid had turned into was sporting the mother of all bitch faces. If he had been any dumber what happened next would have clued him in.
The Eevee, pissed off and backed into a corner, pulled out the biggest puppy dog eyes he had ever seen.
"Aw, it's so cute!" Bonnie broke in breaking his concentration on his brother.
"Bonnie, be quiet!" Clemont whispered harshly. The little girl looked upset but Dean didn't pay her any attention.
The Pokemon that it was facing seemed to think so as well because they slowed their rush toward Sammy and looked a little confused if not a little like they wanted to turn back on their trainers. 'Ah, good old Sammy, the puppy dog eyes will work on anyone.'
"Wow, I think that Eevee is using Baby-Doll Eyes but it's unlike any that I've ever seen - it looks so sad." Clemont voiced in awe. 'Strike one for you little brother' Dean chuckled to himself, 'Sam you're never going to live the name of that move down - even if you turned it into something completely different.'
"Ursaring what are you doing, ignore it and use Slash" one of the trainers shouted. The other two shouted similar commands but were ignored. The Ursaring's claws extend and they came down on Sammy. Dean started to move but only got a couple of dozen feet before a wailing echo shook the forest. It was so strong the air whipped around them and all three of the Pokemon trying to battle were blown back and hit several dozen trees with loud thumps.
His little brother however wasn't done. He may have been forced to be stationary but he was definitely making a stand. Yellow Sparks lit up his tail 'Sammy has a tail' Dean thought a little bit hysterically as the yellow sparks turned to stars and were whipped at the fallen Pokemon. They connected and all three were put out for the count.
"Amazing, that's the strongest Swift I've ever seen Ash shouted. The battle was obviously over and the three trainers recalled their Pokemon. The Eevee was still standing and bore its teeth in a challenge.
"I'm coming back" the Trainer with the Ursaring shouted as all three of them left, Dean assumed to go to the already overcrowded Pokemon Center.
"Quick now's our chan- oh no!" The Eevee had fallen after its display of power and it looked as if it was unable to get up.
'Damit all' Dean couldn't wait anymore. "Sammy!"
"Dean wait! Rushing up like that is dangerous" Clemont called. No one listened. Ash was right behind Dean Pikachu on his shoulder.
The older Winchester cursed as Pikachu and Ash outran him getting to Sam first. 'Shit, since when am I slower than a 14-year-old?' He was only seconds behind, but he was behind Ash and Sam didn't see him. His brother may have been down and on the last of his strength but he wasn't out yet. After all, he was a Winchester. Now Dean could hear a deep breath being taken as Ash tried to reason: "Eevee please, we only want to help!"
"Pika-pi pi pika" Pikachu also seemed to try to get through but it wasn't working. Dean had to do something, Sam was going to hurt himself more if he kept trying to fend off anyone who may or may not be a threat.
'This is either going to work, or this is going to hurt a lot,' Dean mused to himself as he jumped in front of Ash and Pikachu and wrapped his arms around his brother. One of his hands instinctively threaded through the fur on top of the Pokemon's head where Sam's hair should have been.
Behind him, he heard his new acquaintances gasp but it registered only distantly. Sam was choking on the breath he had readied for an attack and Dean could feel the harsh breath being blown against his midsection. He didn't know a lot about Pokemon but he did know his brother and Sam was calming down. The older brother was insanely glad that he wasn't going to be waking up tomorrow with bruises.
He leaned down as if trying to hide Sam from the rest of the world. Dean didn't know how this had happened but he supposed that waking up in a strange place in a strange body hadn't been a favor. Sam was still trembling and Dean whispered quietly so only Sam could hear: "I've got you kiddo".
