Chapter 45: Game of Flags
It was time for an annual Butterfly Johansen Family Picnic. IE: A picnic between the two side of Star's family the aspartic Butterfly gamily and barbarian Johansen Family .
Though Star tried to sneak to the adults table though a dinner tray.
She was immediately set back to the kiddie table.
Where a bunch of her little cousins were who were playing with their food.
Thankfully she wasn't alone as her parents let her invite her friends along for the picnic.
So she did have someone to gripe to.
"Come on it's not so bad." Said Ochaco.
"Seriously." Said Star.
"I think we should get a chair from the adult table." Said Izuku.
"I tried." Said Star.
"No I mean an actual chair." Said Izuku, "For Iida."
They all looked at Tenya, as he was very tall he looked extremally awkward sitting in the kiddy chair.
"I'm fine with this…" said Tenya.
Shoto looked at Tenya as even he could tell he was very uncomfortable.
Normally Shoto spent his days off with his mom, but she told him that he should sometimes hang out with friends, especially since he was invited to the picnic.
"Ochaco! Look Sippy Goblets!" said Star holding said goblets.
When one of her cousins got a lot of food on her face she was ready to snap even using her wand which started to glow green.
"Star! No…" said Izuku.
"We really don't know what would happen." Pointed out Tenya.
Star sighed.
"But all of the good stuff is going on at the grown up table!" said Star.
Her friends were all confused.
But then the drama unfolded.
On the Johnsen side of the family they would eat very messily.
While on the Butterfly family they would drink in a way that was both noisy and snobby.
This made the tow ides start to fight.
"It's happening!" cheered Star.
The two side of the family were bickering, with only Queen Moon trying to bring peace to them.
King River joined in the arguing until she scolded him.
"Oh right…" coughed King Reiver.
He got top of the table to give a speech.
"There's no reason for this petty back and forth! We're all royalty you know… there is only one way to settle this…" said King River who then pulled out a flag of some kind, "WITH FLAGS!"
"FLAGS!" cheered Star taking out a flag form somewhere.
"What's going on?" asked Izuku realizing that two sides of her family were excited.
"It's a game where we take our flags to the top of the hill." Said Star.
They all noticed a nearby hill.
"Oh that actually sounds like fun." Said Ochaco.
"Yeah." Said Izuku.
However Star noticed they were looking at the wrong hill.
"Nit that hill…" said Star then she pointed to a different one, "That hill."
They all looked at the massive mountain which was not only very tall but had things like an area of lava and a lot of snow and what seemed to be an enteral rain storm.
"You know I'm kind of surprised that UA doesn't have a mountain like that." Said Ochaco.
"Maybe the older students have it." Said Todoroki.
Meanwhile Nezu was sipping some tea when he got a strange feeling.
"It feels like there is a missed opportunity for training." Said Nezu.
HE then shrugged it off.
Back in Mewni…
"The winner gets to look down on everyone for a whole year!" said Star, "I'm so ready for this!"
She took her flag and was about to lead her group of friends to the starting line.
However Queen Moon stopped her.
"No way." She said taking the flags.
"That's my glad!" said Star.
"You are not plying Flags today." Said Queen Moon, "You can have it back when it's over."
"What but you played Flags at my age." Said Star.
"There's a lot stuff I did that you won't be doing…" said Queen Moon.
Star huffed at that.
"Look I know it's bad being the oldest at the bi kids table." Said Queen Moon.
Though technically Izuku was the oldest.
But that wasn't the point…
"You're not ready to be the youngest at the grown up table." Said Queen Moon, "Now help your little cousins chew their corn."
Star pouted at this. But it was clear that she would take it laying down.
Her friends noticed the look on Star's face.
It was clear to all of them that she was going to play anyways .
"Do you have a plan to make sure you mother doesn't notice?" asked Tenya blushing slightly.
The other three were surprised that Tenya wasn't scolding her.
Star smiled.
"You're right I do have a plan." Said Star.
She enacted her plan, got her flag back without her mother noticing and they covertly went to the starting line.
"So we're a team right?" asked Ochaco.
"Oh yeah." Said Star.
And so she enacted her plan.
They hid amongst her relative.
"All right! Let us all have a spirited game of flags." Said Manfred who was acting as the announcer, "And I hope we don't have a repeat of last year's unpleasantness…"
"What happened last year?" asked Ochaco.
"Last year right before he could make it to the top, Uncle Lump got his body cut off." Said Star.
"WHAT!" yelled Izuku and Ochaco.
"Don't worry he's totally fine, he got a new body." Said Star.
They all noticed that her uncle's head was now attached to a horse body.
"I think he likes it better this way." Said Star.
"I have questions…" said Tenya.
However before he could say any more Manfred announced the start of the race and both families sped off/.
"Wait… is okay to even have help?" asked Ochaco as they were running.
"Oh yeah! A lot of my family members have servants and knights helping them." Said Star.
As it turned out as they approached the mountain, Shoto was having a bit of a problem climbing up he was about to use his quirk when one of Star's uncle's approached him.
"Need a hand?" he asked.
Wait Shoto!" yelled Star.
However Shoto took his hand.
However it was a trap as his servant was someone hidden under his sleeve as a false hand…
"Nice one Uncle Heartrude!" said Star.
Shoto was confused as the servant refused to let go.
"Did you just congratulate him?" asked Shoto once he was able to get his hand free.
"Yeah that's how the game goes!" said Star.
"So you congratulate them when you take them down?" asked Tenya.
"Yep!" said Star, "Come on!"
They followed her even passing by Uncle Heartrude who got trapped in a bear trap ignoring him when he was asking for help.
"Look away Izuku." Said Star making sure he didn't fall for anything from her uncle.
Her uncle realized he needed to gnaw of off his own fibula…
They counited up the mountain… however as they got up the mountain… things started to become horrifying.
They ran though the rain zone which wasn't so bad… it wasn't like they hated wet socks to that extent.
However getting past it they saw one of Star's aunts on her mother's side of the family used strange seed to dragon in some people on her father's side underground.
And someone from her father side caused a landslide.
This worried everyone else.
It was different than the Sports Drastically as it wasn't about showing of their abilities…
"I think your family is trying to hurt each other." Said Izuku.
"Yeah! I know! Isn't it awesome!" said Star.
None of them knew what else to say…
They continued on the way.
That was when someone attacked Star using their flag.
Star blocked… however the person fighting her was not only surprised Star was there but also happy as it was King River.
"Star! Look at you playing Flags!" he cheered .
"Come here dad!" said Star.
The two hugged… and then Star threw him off the mountain much to the horror of her friends.
Though it was awkward that he kept completing her of the take down as he fell down the mountain.
"It's how you play!" said Star, "Also don't act like Shoto wouldn't throw off his father off a mountain."
"I would." Said Shoto, "But you like your father… I don't."
Ochaco and Tenya were very confused by this as they didn't know anything…
"Wait does that have to do when Star's mom slapped your dad." Said Ochaco.
"Now's not the time!" said Star changing the subject, "Let's keep going!"
Her four friends were very concerned.
Though partially out of the whole Shoto would threw his father off a mountain for Ochaco and Tenya but still they followed Star.
They counited on their way unaware that Queen Moon had found out everything and learned about Star's decoys which were made of corn.
Got to an area that was covered in lava.
"Wait!" said Shoto.
"Why should I wait! If I don't go now…" said Star.
However she looked at Shoto placed his right foot close to the lava pool as possible covering the area in ice.
"Oh… right…" said Star who was feeling kind of embarrassed, "That makes more sense."
"Is it safe?" asked Tenya.
"Just avoid the forming eggs from hell." Said Shoto.
"The what?" asked Izuku.
They saw strange bubbles started to emerged from the ice.
They crossed avoiding the bubbles.
However Uncle Heartrude, still in the bear trap (deciding it wasn't worth chewing off his fibula) being carried by his servant showed up.
"You've been a stone a stone in pantones for a long time my incorrigible little niece! It's time to abacate the throne!" said Heartrude.
He attacked Star but Izuku got in the path of the attack.
"Are you seriously trying to kill Star?" asked Izuku.
"Our relationship is quite separated… you see I'm a direct decadent of the short lived "Queen" Justine. While she is a direct decadent of his younger sister Queen Solaria. It's so many generations back that we are barely related… however my dearest daughter has the marks of a future queen… the only member of the butterfly outside of her, Moon and Lady Etheria… and should Star die…" said King Heartrude.
Izuku punched out Star's very distant uncle.
Though his servant nearby felt onto the one of the hell eggs but Tenya stopped before he could fall.
They both noticed that Star ran for it during this incident.
Considering her uncle outright admitted he wanted her dead and she just cared about winning this game…
Yeah… they were all concerned.
"Star!" called out Izuku.
"Come on!" said Star.
"Star wait! Look!" said Ochaco pointing at her family.
"What am I look at?" asked Star
"The game… I don't know… it's horrible…" said Ochaco.
"It's just about winning… there's no other reason for it." Said Izuku.
"they're right…" said Tenya.
Star looked at her family.
They were all treating each other horrible, even with the peak right there.
She looked at her friends… she knew if she didn't say anything they wouldn't at her the same way.
"I have an idea to stop this… just back me up okay…" said Star.
/her friends nodded.
Star ran as fast as she could and started to grab everyone's flags. His relatives became extremely angry. And started to chase her down.
However a few of them were hit by Ochaco.
A few others had their feet frozen to the ground.
Izuku punched a few away.
"Star!" said Tenya.
Star nodded reglazing what Tenya was offering.
However there were still people who got passed Izuku, Ochaco and Shoto.
And they tackled the two to the ground.
However that was when those that tackled them started to float.
Izuku and Shoto looked at Ochaco shaking her head indicating it wasn't her.
But rather it was Queen Moon who had had blue skin, glowing eyes, butterfly wings and multiple arms.
She landed on the ground returned partially to normal.
"Are you alright?" asked Queen Moon.
"We're fine… and man you were awesome with those arms and big old wings and stuff." Said Star.
"Star… you're never going believe this but I just met your twin sister, she was made of corn." Said Queen Moon as her extra arms disappeared along with her wings not only that but her voice was abustle dripping with sarcasm, "I don't remember ever giving birth to her… River… did I ever give birth to a corn baby?"
"No we just have the one." Said King River showing up who was severally injured,
"Thank you River." Said Queen Moon.
"Her name is Star…" said King River clearly out of it.
"Okay River… just lay down…" said Queen Moon getting her husband to lay down due to injuries, she then looked at her daughter, "You see what Flags does to the brain."
"I'm sorry I tried to trick you with my corn twin." Said Star, "But maybe you're right… I'm not ready for flags… but maybe the real reason is that Flags is dumb."
"Here she is…" said King River getting up standing up next to Star, "Our only child Star butterfly…"
Queen Moon stared at her husband.
"Okay…" she said .
"HUNGRY!" he yelled.
"I was trying to bring all of the flags to the top, not for myself but for all of us to claim the mountain for everyone!" said Star.
Her family heard this and cheered for the idea.
"That's the most grown up things I heard all day. Star I belie you earned your place at the grown up table."
"Hugs!" cheeped Star hugging her mom.
"Now Star, Public display of affection aren't a Butterfly straight." Said Queen Moon, "The Johansens on the other hand are great at it! You are the perfect combination of our two families. I'm proud of you."
"Oh and Tenya… I'm sorry for having you sit in one of the child chairs…" said Queen Moon, "I should have realized you would be uncomfortable."
"It's fine… besides Shoto is only three centimeters shorter than myself and he was fine." Said Tenya.
"I made a small block of ice to make it a bit more comfortable…" said Shoto.
Queen Moon sighed at that response.
Still with the picnic Queen Moon realized how much her daughter has grown since starting UA and knew that there would be more growth in the future.
Next Time: Mineta is still worried about being an elf and wants to know why it's taking so long for Star to turn him back... Stat still doesn't want to turn him back and is unsure how to go about it... what will happen? Find out next time!
