Professor Layton and the Living Dead
Chapter 1: Finding Information
"So, what is our first course of action, Professor?", Luke asked, after they have gathered who the woman was, or at least, what they call her. Layton thought for a moment before Emmy chimed in.
"We should check the City Hall Archives. If she ever lived in London, there must be a folder on her, with a birth certificate and maybe a marriage certificate. Maybe we even find something about her parents.", Emmy suggested, earning a nod from the Professor.
"We should ask the mayor to see the documents. They are protected, after all.", Layton said. Scarlett looked at the Professor before asking: "Do you think they will let us look at the documents?"
Layton smiled and assured that, yes, the mayor would let them look at the documents, but if not, maybe they could try and find information in London's main library. Scarlett smiled and stood up from where she was sitting, walked over to the Professor and hooked her arm into his. Layton was slightly confused but didn't seem to mind, however he felt a pair of eyes dig into his back. He ignored that feeling though.
The group entered the City Hall and asked to see the documents for a Scarlett. The mayor was surprised, but he let them see every document the city had about 'Scarlett'. Most of the documents were useless, as they pertained to a different Scarlett than the one they were looking for information about.
"This is going to take forever. Scarlett, can you really not remember anything?", Emmy asked, causing the red-haired women to blush and deny it. She couldn't remember anything. Emmy sighed and kept looking, so were Luke and the Professor. Scarlett herself wouldn't even know what to look for exactly, so she just watched the trio find information, or at least trying to do so.
"Scarlett….Scarlett…..Scarlett….I think I found something Professor.", Luke stated showing a document to the Professor.
"Scarlett Alister, only child of the neurologist Richard Alister and Lilian Alister.", Layton read out to the red haired woman, who seemed to at least respond to the surname.
"Doctor Richard Alister, doesn't he work in the central Hospital of London?", Emmy asked, curious about the name.
"Not only that, he and his wife as well as another person have suffered greatly after our 'living corpse' here has disappeared.", Professor Layton explained. Scarlett seemed to think about something before asking: "If this doctor Alister is a neurologist, maybe he can help me figure out what's wrong."
"I don't believe that is such a good idea. If he is your father, seeing you alive and well, might disturb him.", Emmy noted correctly, leaving Scarlett looking to the ground defeated. The four of them tried thinking of a solution, still looking through the documents and newspaper articles. They must've already spend like two hours in the archives before Layton noted a news article in the London times that has been quite recent, well, as recent as it could be. It stated that a fire in London's White City district had cost the life of two people, yet only one body was ever found. At the time they had chalked it up to the other body having been burnt to an unrecognisable shape. However what's more interesting about it was that they had arrested one suspect, but let him go due to a lack of evidence.
"Interesting...", Layton whispered before putting the article back where he found it. Emmy and Luke had found some information as well, mostly something about her that wasn't really helpful in finding her memories, but at least they now knew who she was.
Emmy had found a marriage License between Scarlett and a man they haven't heard from in a while, last time was when he contacted them about a living mummy, it turned into a great adventure. Luke found information about Scarlett's parents on accident. He however thought that they should visit them, no matter if they would freak out or not.
Meanwhile Scarlett is looking around the shelves.
"You shouldn't be wandering around alone, sweetheart.", a voice spoke out to her, making her turn around quickly and backing up a bit. However her back connected with someone, making her jump.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you.", the voice said again, placing a hand on her shoulder, making her turn around and back away again.
"Who are you?", Scarlett asked, scared. In front of her stood a man, his body and face obscured, but it was obvious that he had a slightly shocked expression on his face.
"I am just an observer. I like watching you, love.", the man just stated before disappearing, but not before he placed a single white rose in her hair, which made her freak out again. Scarlett ran back to where the Professor and his companions were, running straight into Layton and holding onto his jacket.
"Miss Scarlett are you alright? You seem like you have seen a ghost.", Layton asked with curiosity, holding the woman's arms.
"He, it, the ghost….", that's all she could muster before she started crying. Emmy noticed the white rose in her hair, but didn't comment on it, instead just took it out and kept it as a piece of evidence, and to research some more.
"Well, we have found what we needed, we will be going to a couple that might know a bit more about you, Miss Scarlett.", Layton said. Making the redhead jump, as if she knew where the would be going.
"No, please. I can't confront them.", Scarlett said. It was a strange reaction, but a gentleman wouldn't press someone to go somewhere that they don't want to go.
"We will protect you, Miss Scarlett.", Luke assured, but it was no use. Scarlett didn't budge.
"Luke, we will be doing this alone. Miss Scarlett clearly doesn't want to see that couple. Emmy, please do your research. Flowers must have certain meanings, this one in particular.", Layton stated. Emmy and Luke agreed and the trio took Scarlett back to the hotel, but not before they informed the staff to look after her. The staff at the hotel nodded in agreement, and the Professor and his apprentice were off to find the parents of the red haired woman, Doctor Richard Alister and Lilian Alister. Hopefully, they can help the Professor.
