Chapter 15: A beautiful gift
There was a pause before the doctor continued. "Congratulations Mrs. Caine you are indeed pregnant."
The doctor took another pause while she heard the happy couple tell one another they love the other, then once they regained their composure and Calleigh was able to concentrate on what she said next, Dr. Bolton set up her first appointment.
When the conversation ended, Calleigh hung up the phone, sets it down on the counter before turning towards her husband, both with tears in their eyes, then he cups her cheek and whispered. "In this moment I've never been happier. I love you Calleigh Caine, I almost can't believe our dream is coming true."
Calleigh nodded with a sniffle. "Me neither, and I love you too."
They kissed softly before pulling back and holding on to one another while beyond happy about the news, but still a little frightened on how good they'll be as parents, considering neither one had the best home life growing up. But the one thing they knew was for certain, was that they were in this together, no matter what.
Three months later
August, 2005
The team that included Ryan Wolfe, who became a member after Tim Speedle died about a year ago, and Natalia Boa Vista, who just joined only a few weeks ago, were at the Caine residence enjoying some snacks and drinks before Eric asked. "Ok, so I have to ask, which I am sure everyone here is thinking the same thing, why are we all here?"
Calleigh looked at Eric with a smirk. "What if you are all here because we just want to hang out after work?"
Eric then smirked in return. "And when do we ever do that here besides during holidays? Which we don't usually come here for that anyways."
That was a true statement, and it wasn't like they don't like them in their home, but usually when there is a team gathering during the holidays it was at Alexx's place, and a few times they found a way to make it to New York to spend time with Derek and Felicia.
Calleigh and Horatio looked at one another with a smile while taking each other's hand before looking at the team, but before they could utter a word, Alexx, the longtime ME and a very good friend to Horatio, gasped before speaking in surprise. "It happened for you two, didn't it? You guys are pregnant."
The rest of them gasped with surprised looks, then both Calleigh and Horatio nodded before he answered her. "We are."
The shock was replaced with smiles and cheering while they hugged them as they said congratulations.
When the celebration was all over and the team left the house a few hours later, Horatio locked the doors while Calleigh was in the bedroom, and when he walked in the room he sees her standing in front of the mirror with her shirt up, where he saw the beginnings of a small baby bump.
He smiles as he walked up to her and wraps his arms around her from behind, then kissed her temple and whispered. "Hi, beautiful."
She smiled in return, then smirked. "Will you still think that in a few months?"
Even though she was joking he could still hear a little vulnerability in her tone, so he turned her around and cupped her cheek before speaking with emotion. "Oh sweetheart, there will never be a moment in time when I won't ever think of you not beautiful."
She nodded her head with tears in her eyes, whispering. "Deep down I know that. I'm sor..."
He cuts her off with a smile as he ran his thumb up and down her cheek. "You got nothing to apologize for, and if you ever need me to remind you just how beautiful you are, I'll gladly show you."
Her eyes started to become dark with passion as she moved her fingers to his dress shirt. "Oh really, will now do?"
He nodded with an even bigger smile as he moved his hands down to the hem of her shirt. "Now is perfect."
Once both shirts came off, he picked her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he moved them towards their bed, then after placing her down, he moves so he was above her, his eyes, which were looking passionate, were roaming her body causing her heart to race.
He gave her a look before moving down her body so he could place his lips against her bare stomach to give it a kiss and whisper how much he loves him or her, then he moved his lips up her body so they could share a kiss, which became one after another, getting passionate each second as they got lost in the loving feeling.
Two Months later
October, 2005
Horatio walked out of the elevator, down the hall towards the ballistic lab before stopping in the doorway, viewing his beautiful wife as she was comparing bullets.
It was a few moments of silence before she spoke with a smile, which her back was still turned towards him. "Are you going to stand there all day, handsome?"
He smiled as he walked into the room. "I wish I could, sweetheart. Especially when I got the best view in front to me." She tried to hide her blush while he continued before she could respond. "But unfortunately, duty does call, and you did page me down here for a reason, so what do you have for me?"
She cleared her throat, trying to get them back into professional mode, while moving away from the microscope that she was looking through to pick up the folder that had his results before handing it to him. She watched his reaction while looking in the folder, and eventually he does a small smile, so she asked. "I take it is good news?"
He nodded with a bigger smile as he closed the file. "Yes, it looks like we have our man."
"Nice. I'm glad I can help then."
"You always do."
They stare lovingly at one another and if they were anywhere but work they would probably be sharing a kiss by now, but they weren't, and Calleigh had to remind her husband on that fact. "You better go get him."
He nodded as he cleared his throat. "Right, I'll see you later."
"Yes, you will."
After one more smile, he turned to walk out of her domain, but right as he got to the door, he hears Calleigh gasp. "Oh my god!"
He turned back around and walked to her quickly as he asked. "Sweetheart, what's wrong?"
She shook her head with a smile. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I was just taken by surprise, give me your hand."
Even though he was curious on what was going on with her, he did what she asked without question, then she took his hand and placed it on her stomach.
A moment later he gasped this time as he looked at her in surprise. "Is that our little one?"
She nodded with a smile and tears in her eyes. "Yes, our little one is kicking."
He chuckled as he felt the continued taps against the palm of his hand, his heart fluttering each moment.
A few moments later, he finally removes his hand with a sigh, once again wishing he could just stay with her, but knew the case needed to be solved, the victim's family deserved their closure. "Ok, I really have to go."
She nodded in agreement, also knowing how much the case needed to be solved. "Yes, you do, love you and be safe."
"Always and love you too."
After one more long look, he turns back around, and this time ends up walking out of the room while Calleigh goes back to what she had been doing before he walked in with a slight spring in her step.
Two Months later
December, 2005
"Are you sure you want to do this, sweetheart?"
It was Christmas time, the whole team was in the ballistic lab and they had set up a gender reveal target so they could finally see what they will be having, after going back and forth for months whether they wanted to know early or not. And even though they only needed to wait two more months, they just couldn't do it any longer, so they choose to do it on Christmas to make the holiday a little more special.
Calleigh looks at her husband with a nod and smile. "Yes, you know I can't wait any longer." She then smirked. "And I know you can't wait any longer either."
He nodded with a smile as he wrapped his arm around his wife's shoulders and kissed her temple before pressing the intercom button and speaking through it. "Ok Eric. Fire when you're ready."
Even though Calleigh wanted to be the one to shoot the target, just to be on the safe side she let some else do the honors, and that someone was almost Horatio, but since he wanted to be by her side when they saw if pink or blue pops up, they let Eric do the honor.
Eric grabbed the earplugs and put them in, then he pulled out his gun and checked it before looking back at them just to make sure, and when he got a thumbs up and a nod with a smile from the couple, he smiled in return before looking at his target while moving the gun in position.
A moment later he pulled the trigger, hit the target and pink dust came flying up, causing the group, who was behind the protected area, to cheer.
Calleigh and Horatio look at one another, tears beaming in their eyes as they said at the same time. "We are having a girl!"
The group cheered again while the couple kissed before sharing a hug.
By the time they pulled back, Eric had joined them, and they were cheering once again.
Later that night, once the Caines made it home after leaving Alexx's place, they were sitting down on the couch sipping on their nonalcoholic drink, then after a few moments of silence, Calleigh asked. "Hey, handsome?"
Horatio turned to his wife and replied softly. "Yeah."
"I've been thinking for a while now that if we are having a girl, we could name her after your mother."
The breath in his body nearly leaves him as he spoke with emotion. "Sweetheart that's a beautiful thought, but we don't..."
She cuts him off while cupping his cheek. "I know we don't have to, but I would love it. I can't think of anything better than naming our first born after someone who you loved so much."
He took a breath before asking softly. "You sure?"
She nodded with a smile. "More than sure. In fact, a large part of me was hoping it would be a girl for that reason alone."
He nodded a moment later with a smile. "Then ok, let's do it. Let's name our daughter after my mother."
She gave him one more smile before they lean towards one another to share a sweet kiss, and after they pulled back, she whispered. "I love you."
"I love you too, sweetheart."
After one more kiss they go back to their drinks while they bask in the complete and utter happiness that they had for the moment and couldn't wait for many more with their little girl, especially when she comes into the world.
Two Months later
Early February, 2006
"Alright, Mrs. Caine I need you to give me one more good push."
While in the hospital room, Dr. Alicia Bolton, who was in her late thirties, so not much older than Calleigh, with dark brown hair and blue eyes, said to Calleigh.
Calleigh nodded, squeezed her husband's hand and gave the biggest push she's ever done.
Moments later the best sound either her or her husband ever heard, their baby's first cry.
Once baby girl Caine was out, the nurses took over cleaning her and weighing her while Dr. Bolton finished with Calleigh, then by the time Calleigh was comfortable in her bed, one of the young nurses walked up to the Caines with a beaming smile behind her mask while asking. "Is mommy ready to hold her little one?"
Calleigh nodded with tears in her eyes and a beaming smile. "Yes, please."
The moment the little girl was placed in Calleigh's arms the only word she could think of was 'perfect', it was love at first sight.
Horatio took a breath as he whispered, his eyes not once leaving his newborn daughter, which his heart was skipping a few beats just thinking of himself now a father. "Wow, have you seen anything more beautiful?"
Calleigh, who's eyes also hadn't left their daughter, shook her head with a sniffle. "No, I haven't."
After a few more moments, she finally looks at her husband and whispered. "Thank you."
He also looked away for the first time from their daughter to look into his wife's eyes and asks her. "For what?"
With a smile, she replied. "For giving me this amazing gift, for making me a mom, and especially for loving me."
"You're welcome sweetheart, and that sentiment goes both ways, although I guess for me it's you making me a father, not a mother."
She chuckled with a nod before they share their first kiss as official parents before their attention went back to their baby girl, where it stayed until the first visitors, who happened to be Derek and Felicia, walked into the room.
Once the excitement had died down somewhat, Horatio looked at Derek and Felicia, which Derek was the one holding the baby, and spoke after clearing his throat. "Calleigh and I would like to ask you two a question."
Derek looked up from the newest member of the family and nodded his head with a smile. "Sure man, what's up?"
Horatio and Calleigh looked at one another before looking at the other couple again then Horatio continued. "We were both wondering if you two would be Beverly Ann's godparents."
They both looked genuinely surprised as Derek asked. "You know you guys don't have to do this just because you are our..."
Horatio cuts him off as he stood up and walked up to them with a smile. "And our thinking wasn't like that, it wasn't payback for you naming me as all your kids' godfather." Horatio took a breath before finishing, which the last part he started to get a little emotional. "You know you are like a brother to me. I mean you've been there for me on some of my darkest moments, and as great and wonderful as the people we work with, who all are good candidates for the 'job' as being godparents, naming you two just felt right."
Once Horatio stopped speaking, Derek smirked as he handed the baby off to his wife and held out his hand towards Horatio. "Can you stop speaking so we can accept, you know we would be honored, you had us the moment you asked, we were just making sure it's what you really wanted."
Horatio smiled with a nod as he shook his best friend's hand. "Absolutely and thank you."
After the handshake, they get into a hug while Derek spoke again, this time with a little more emotion, happy for his best friend. "And congratulations, I know how long you waited for this moment in your life, you're going to be a wonderful dad."
Horatio sighed with a nod. "I really hope so."
Calleigh, hearing what her husband said, spoke with a smile. "I agree with Derek, you'll be a wonderful dad, handsome."
Derek and Horatio pull back from their hug while Felicia agreed with her husband and friend, so knowing he was out numbed to argue with them, Horatio just nodded with a smile.
Not long after, the rest of the evening was spent with the team as they visited the new family of three.
When it was beyond visiting hours, and while Calleigh was sound asleep, Horatio was sitting in the chair next to the bed, holding his newborn daughter in his arms, falling more in love with Beverly as the seconds went by, still hoping he will be the father that she needs him to be.
