Chapter 23: Their day takes a turn

6 months later

March, 2018

"Are you sure you don't need my help, babe?"

Nick, who was tidying up the living room, looked at his 9-month pregnant wife and shook his head with a smile. "No honey, I got it, you just relax."

It may have been a little later in her pregnancy to have a baby shower but considering most of the people who they wanted to come works and lives in Vegas, it was a little harder to get them any earlier than now.

Sabrina, who was sitting in the recliner, sighed, not liking to be doing nothing. "You know I can still do some stuff around the house."

Nick walked towards his wife, which his heart was still racing while thinking of her as that, then kneeled down and cupped her cheek with love in his eyes. "I know you can." He then moved his other hand to her stomach, feeling the strong kick of his son as he continued. "I just know this little one is coming very soon, and I wanted you to relax as much as you can. Let me take care of you for a change, ok?"

She sighed again but nodded with a smile as she placed her hand on top of his that was still on her cheek. "You are so good to me, husband."

He smiled wider with even more love in his eyes. "That's because you make it easy, wife. I love you."

"I love you too."

Nick then leans forward and they share a sweet kiss, then as he was getting up, he asked. "Do you need anything?"

"No thank you, I'm good right now."

He nodded before he goes back to cleaning the room while Sabrina watched him, feeling like the luckiest woman on earth, which that thinking hadn't changed one bit since meeting and falling in love with him, especially the last 9 months. He's been everything she could ever hope for, and she still didn't know what she did to deserve him, but she was going to do everything she could to prove she was worthy of him.

She must have zoned out because Nick spoke a little loud to get her attention. "Babe!"

Sabrina shook her head then looked up at her husband with a smile. "Yes, can I help you?"

He shook his head with a smile as he asked. "It looked like you zoned out there, you ok?"

She nodded with a wider smile. "Yeah, just thinking how lucky I am to have met you."

He smiled as he walked closer to her again and whispered. "Funny, I feel the same way."

When he was near her again, they shared another kiss, and after they pulled back, she smirked. "Don't you still have some cleaning to do?"

He chuckled before speaking with a smirk. "Well, if someone would stop distracting me, maybe I can get back to it."

"I'm not doing anything. I'm just sitting here."

"Exactly."

She then raised an eyebrow as she asked. "Am I really that much of distraction?"

With emotion, he whispered. "Every time I look at you, especially now, in this moment."

She looked down shyly as she whispered. "Nicky."

He chuckled softly as he leaned down and kissed her cheek. "It's true, you are looking more beautiful every day."

After he pulls back, they share one more look before he goes back to cleaning once again, this time not trying to be distracted by his beautiful wife.

A few hours later

With the men, which included Nick, Grissom, Vartann, Greg, Eddie (Lily's fiancé), Sabrina's 3 Brothers and Michael, were out on the deck playing poker, the women (Sabrina, Sara, Catherine, Morgan, Lily, Sabrina's sister-in-laws, Ellen and best friends) were in the living room so Sabrina could open presents, and as the next one was being handed to her, Sabrina smirked at Sara after seeing the wrapping paper had ladybugs on it. "Well, I wonder who got me this present?"

Part of the fun was that they weren't allowed to write on the tag who got the present so Sabrina could guess who brought what, but this one didn't really take a genius to get.

They chuckled while Sara spoke with a smile. "Well, you try telling an entomologist not to get something that has bugs on it."

As they chuckled again, Sabrina nodded with another smirk. "I guess you do have a point there."

She should know very well on that concept, considering her husband was part of the entomologist world as well, just not as deeply as Grissom is.

The women chuckled one more time as Sabrina opened the present, then when she got it opened, she smiled while showing off the few baby clothes that was in it, then shook her head with a chuckle as she picked up the last one, which was a baseball jersey, but what was funny about it was that it was a Cubs jersey, not a Texas Rangers one, which was her husband's favorite team, so she looked at Sara with a raised eyebrow. "Are you trying to convert our son?"

Sara smirked in return. "You'll have to take that up with my husband, that was his idea."

Before Sabrina could speak again, Grissom, who just walked into the house with Nick, asked with a raised eyebrow. "What was my idea?"

Sabrina held up the jersey so the guys could see it as she replied. "This."

Nick practically gasped as he walked up to the offending object in his wife's hands. "What is this?" He then looked at Grissom with a smirk. "This isn't right, man."

Grissom smirked in return. "I just want the little guy to know there are other teams to root for."

Then one of Sabrina's friends smirked. "Yeah, like the Dodgers."

As they all chuckled the other men walked into the house, which soon after started a debate about who was the better baseball team.
And while that was going on Sara and Grissom shared eye contact with smiles before Grissom tilted his head 'asking' if she wanted to check on the twins, who were in the playroom with the older kids.

She nodded and got up from the love seat, walked to her husband, took his hand before they headed down the hall, stopping in the doorway when they got there, and everything looked good.

After a moment of silence, Sara looked at her husband with a smirk. "See what you started with the Cubs jersey? I told you Nick wouldn't take that lying down."

He chuckled as he placed his arm around his wife and brought her closer to him. "Like I said, I just wanted him to know there were other options out there."

She looked at her husband with loving eyes as she replied softly. "Well, you know sometimes when something catches your eye or sparks that interest in you, you don't really care about the other options out there."

Grissom raised an eyebrow as he asked. "We aren't talking about baseball anymore, are we?"

She smiled as she turned her body so she could wrap her arms around his neck. "What do you think, Dr. Grissom?"

He smiled in return as he wrapped his arms around her waist. "Hmm, what do I think? Well for one, I think you are the most beautiful woman in the world, which I'm always thinking that, and two, I think I am the luckiest man on earth to have found a woman who is still interested in me and that I can still cause her to have a spark."

"And as long as I have a say in it, it will always be that way, Griss."

Before he could say anything more, they could hear a commotion from the living room, so they gave each other a look before releasing one another and heading back to the living room, where Sara asked. "What's going on?"

While Nick was helping Sabrina up from the chair, he spoke, a little freaked out. "Sabrina's water just broke, we are going to the hospital."

Michael, Sabrina's father, held up the keys and spoke. "And I got the keys, let's go."

With him and his wife being the last ones here, getting their vehicle to the hospital would be a lot quicker than most of the others, so it was already determined that her parents would be the ones to take them.

They all wished the couple good luck as them, Michael and Ellen walked out of the house.

Once everyone started to calm down, the sister in-laws headed towards the playroom to check on the kids while the rest of the guests did their part on cleaning up, including the men going outside to clean up the poker table.

A little time later Sabrina's 'group' was in the living room while Nick's 'group' was outside on the deck, sitting at the glass table.

Sara and Grissom were each holding one of their babies when Greg smirked. "Can you believe it? Nick will finally be a father."

Sara sighed and nodded with a smile. "Yeah, it's amazing, a dream come true for him honestly."

They all nodded in agreement, knowing exactly how Nick felt about having kids, even though besides to Sara, he's never really told anybody explicitly that he wanted any. It was just the way he acted when he was around kids, they could see it in his eyes the desire to be a father one day.

Catherine, who beats Sara at it, looks at Greg and smirks. "And what about you Greg? When will it finally be your turn?"

All eyes turned to Greg and Morgan, they both smiled shyly, which caused Sara to ask in surprise. "Is there something you two have to share?"

They both shook their heads before they took each other's hand then Morgan spoke after clearing her throat. "Not yet, but hopefully soon."

When they got together, they knew pretty quickly what they wanted in their relationship, but they still wanted a little more time just the two of them before they added a little one to the mix.

They all nodded with smiles before their attention turned towards Catherine, and she spoke with a chuckle. "Don't look at me, I'm not exactly in the baby making stage anymore."

Vartann then smiled, happy to have the woman he loved back into his life, as he took her hand in his. "But still just as beautiful."

The women 'awed' before Sara asked with a raised eyebrow. "Well, you might not have baby news to share, but there could be other news you could get off your chest."

Before Catherine could speak, Sabrina's oldest brother, Michael Jr., had opened the back door and cleared his throat. "Excuse me guys, but I was informed a healthy baby Stokes had made it into the world, and since there is a limit of visitors, we think you guys should go first."

Sara asked. "Are you sure?"

He nodded with a smile as he looked at Catherine, Vartann, Greg and Morgan. "I know that the four of you need to get back to Vegas soon, and I'm sure you would like to see him before you leave. Besides, we can see him anytime, so go ahead."

The group said thank you before Michael walked back into the house, closing the sliding glass door behind him.

They all smiled as they stood up, happy that their long-time friend/co-worker finally got his dream come true.

After making it to the hospital, Ellen and Michael took the Grissom twins before Grissom, Sara, Catherine and Greg headed to the room first.

Once they got there, Sara knocked on the door and a few seconds later the door opened before they all could see a beaming looking Nick standing in front of them, they congratulated him as they walked into the room, then their eyes turned to the baby in his mother's arms.

As the women walked closer to the bed first, Sara smirked. "It looks like someone was really ready to come out into this world."

Sabrina, who was also beaming, chuckled with a nod. "I know, right? I was expecting for a longer wait time, but he surprised us all by coming early and quickly."

They chuckled in return before Sabrina asked. "So, which one of you will be first to hold him?"

Catherine and Sara looked at one another before Catherine cleared her throat while nodding towards the younger woman. "You go ahead."

"You sure?"

Catherine nodded with a smile. "Yeah."

Sara nodded in return with a smile before looking at Sabrina, and after Sabrina gave her son a little pep talk and a kiss on his forehead, she handed him off to Sara first.

He started out a little fussy, but Sara had the magic touch and calmed him down almost instantly, surprising no one in the room, before talking to the little guy. "Hey little man, I'm your aunt Sara. I want to tell you something, your daddy, who is the best by the way, has waited a long time for you and he already loves you so much. In fact, we all do, and we'll be there for you whenever you need us."

After a few more moments with him, Sara passed baby Stokes to Catherine before asking the parents. "So, do you guys have a name for your new addition?"

They both smiled while taking each other's hand then Nick spoke after clearing his throat. "Billy Michael Stokes. After both of our fathers."

They all smiled at the name while Catherine finished her 'visit' before handing him off to Grissom, who was a little more emotional than he expected to be, but to see a young man he mentored become a father, almost made him feel like a proud 'father' himself.

After his time with Billy, Grissom hands him off to Greg so the younger man could have a moment with the newest member of their family.

Once everyone had their turn and they chatted, Sara, Grissom, Catherine, Greg and Nick left the room so Nick could say goodbye to those who were going back to Vegas.

When they made it outside of the hospital, they started saying goodbye to one another, but before they walked away, Catherine spoke. "I was planning on telling you guys later, but someone had other plans." They chuckled before she continued while taking Vartann's hand, who had squeezed her hand in return. "But to answer your question Sara, I do have some news to share. I mean we have some news to share."

As Vartann and Catherine looked at one another, Sara gasped. "You two are getting married, aren't you?"

Catherine looked at the younger woman with a nod and smile, beaming like they never seen before. "Yes, we are." They were all smiling while Catherine looks at Nick. "I hope I didn't just steal your..."

Nick cuts her off, the smile still on his face as he brings her into his arms. "You didn't steal anything. This is great news Cath, congratulations."

"Thank you, Nick."

They pull back and he nodded then turned his attention to Vartann to give him a handshake while the rest of them hugged Catherine to congratulate her.

After all the congratulations and goodbyes were done, Sara and Nick headed back into the hospital while Vartann, Greg and Morgan headed towards the vehicle, leaving Catherine and Grissom alone for a few minutes.

He smiled as he asked. "You really sure about this?"

Catherine nodded with another beaming smile. "Yeah, it may have taken me time to believe I can do the whole married thing again, but I really do feel that I am ready. I love him, and I know how much he loves me."

"Ok, just making sure. He just better treat you right."

She chuckled while placing her hand on his arm. "You're not getting all protective of me, are you?"

He sighed as he placed his hand on top of hers. "You know I'll always be protective of you, no matter what."

Catherine nodded with a more serious look as she stepped closer to him to give him a hug. "Yeah, I know that, and I hope you truly know how much I appreciate our friendship."

"It goes both ways, Cath. Have a safe flight, call when you land to let me know you guys made it ok."

"You got it."

After they pulled back, they share a smile before she turned and headed towards the vehicle, where Vartann was waiting by the passenger door to open it for her, and after they kissed softly on the lips, she gets in the vehicle before he shuts the door and walked towards the driver's side. But before he gets in, he waves to Grissom.

Grissom waves to him back before he turned and headed back into the hospital, happy for his long-time friend's upcoming wedding and that she finally found her happily ever after.

A few hours later

Sara and Grissom were ready to get home, but before they left, they stopped by the room Sabrina was still in.

They walked into the room after Nick had opened the door before Sara spoke. "We just wanted to wish you guys a good night."

Nick then smirked as he headed back towards the bed. "Or you just couldn't stay away from this little guy."

They chuckled as Sara and Grissom, who were each holding their babies, walked closer to the bed to see Billy.

After a moment, Nick cleared his throat before speaking. "Actually, we are glad to have a moment alone with you two."

They both raised an eyebrow while Grissom spoke this time. "What's going on, Nicky?"

Nick placed a hand on Sabrina's shoulder before he continued. "We talked about this, and we would really like it if you two were our son's godparents."

They looked a little shocked while Sara spoke. "Wow, are you sure?"

Nick and Sabrina nodded with smiles then Sabrina spoke. "We are."

Sara and Grissom look at one another before looking at the couple, then Sara nodded with a smile. "We would be honored, guys. Thanks for asking."

"You're welcome."

After a few moments Sara and Grissom said their goodbyes and left the room.

As the door clicked shut, Nick sits at the end of his wife's hospital bed and looks down at his son with a sigh before speaking with emotion. "Thank you, honey."

Sabrina looks at her husband with tears in her eyes. "Aww babe, you don't need to thank me."

He nodded as he cupped her cheek. "Yes, I do. I love you and our son so much, you two are my world."

She smiled. "And you two are mine. I love you two so much too."

He leans down and kissed her softly, then she turns her head to look down at their son before moving him up so she could kiss his forehead.

Once she pulled back, she turns to hand her son to her husband. "Now it's your turn, daddy."

He took a breath and takes his son from her arms, his heart racing more than it has ever done in his life.

After the little guy was settled into his father's arms, Nick started to speak to him softly. "Hey buddy, I'm your father." He took another deep breath as he whispered, still not believing this moment was finally here, that his dream had finally come true. "Wow, I'm a father." And he was going to do everything he can to protect his son.

When Sara and Grissom made it home, they put the twins to bed before heading to their room to get ready for bed themselves.

After they were settled in bed and cuddled up to one another, Sara took a breath. "Wow, the day definitely took a turn."

Grissom ran his hand up and down her arm. "Yeah, it did, but I think Nick and Sabrina didn't mind that much, they were ready."

She nodded with a smile, then after a yawn, she asked. "And what about Catherine's news, you surprised she's engaged?"

Obviously, Sara knew Catherine was in love with Vartann and that she was happy to be back together with him, but she wasn't a 100% sure if an engagement was even on Catherine's radar.

"Maybe a little, you know because of her being burned before. But, and while I only know Lou from a professional standpoint, I don't think he's anything like Eddie."

She shook her head. "And while I didn't know much about Eddie, I believe you're right. Lou is a good man, and I can see how much he loves her, especially the last few years before she had left Vegas."

He nodded with a yawn, then replied as he moved her closer to him and closed his eyes. "In the end though, just as long as she's happy, that's all I care about."

"I agree." As Sara closed her eyes, she whispered. "I love you, sleep tight, babe."

"Love you too and sleep tight, honey."

Moments later they fell asleep.
