Snow was falling again; thick heavy flakes fell from the heavens. She was entranced by it, her eyes never leaving the window. Her fingers were lightly rested on the keys, frozen in place. He had exited long ago from his office. She had sat there with a soft small smile on her face. It had confused him for a moment before he followed her line of sight. He wondered how long it had been since she had physically seen snow. A sharp scent of tears and salt wafted through the air, the tingle of her powers danced along his form. He knew this feeling, she was remembering. Her body had always been an open book to him, her emotions worn right on her sleeve insight for the whole world to see.
He quietly turned into his office, giving her a privet moment in her grief. It was a hard adjustment for him, they had only been courtly a few months now. His basic instinct was to calm her, but logic had won. Sitting at his desk, he turned himself towards the window. The eerie glow of lights colored the sky and falling snow. They had an important meeting in a few hours, the morning was still young. He wondered mildly if he should attend it alone. It had been a rough week for her emotionally.
Miroku had taken her to her family shrine, the construction had begun but the damage was extensive. He had been informed by Tatchi she had gone home and did resurface till Monday morning. She had been crying, he could see and smell it. Her bubbly personality had dulled. Then that night they had a vicious fight. Their first. He supposed it was his punishment really. She had hurled accusations of stalking and empty threats.
She had mentioned Rin, which of course had set his own fuse alight. They had gone back and forth until the early morning; it had ended with her calling a taxi and leaving with a slam of his front door. His foyer had sported a new hole from his fist. It was still there, mocking him. See what she made you do? Loss of control. Years of honing your abilities down the drain.
He sighed, all that had been a week ago. They barely spoke at work, and she kept the contact limited outside of working hours. He was angry sure, but the only feet where he could place blame was his own. She patched a call through to his phone, the ringing rosing him from his sulking.
She had gone back to watching the snow after the line was picked up. She had been feeling numb as of late, just like she had when she first lost her sight. Doctors told her the depression was normal, a human response to the sudden trauma inflicted upon her. She could almost here the way the doctor had pitied her as he explained. She hadn't needed to see the look at all. The air almost tasted of it. When she wasn't numb, she was consumed by rage.
An unyielding void of hell fire. She had been set off originally by Koga's new "woman". She had been rude to her over the phone, tossing insults as if she was an inanimate object. Then the day spiraled even more. When she had gone over to Sesshomaru's home, she had indented to have dinner and spend time together. But he made a remark about the new woman in Koga's life. She didn't take kindly to it. The miscommunication then opened the damn she had been desperately holding back.
She had insulted him in the worst way possible. She doubted his ability to provide or protect her. The moment she had spat the words out, shed had known she had hit a low blow. Then he had reminded her he had been having her watched to ensure that. She had scoffed at it, throwing Rin and her family's death in his face. That hit the center of his being. His eyes bled red then, his fangs elongating, his markings stretching across his cheeks. Her power bubbled to the surface, reacting to his own flaring.
None of it mattered in the moment. She was angry, tired, and emotionally distraught. The shrine, coupled with her own research online about her accident had pushed her over the edge. An alarm sounded, there was a conference being held in thirty minutes. Sighing deeply, she got up and set about organizing the files and such for the meeting. She had done the files on autopilot days prior; Kagome was thankful she had done them correctly.
Moving down the hallway to her right, she opened the door and moved into the large room. She set up a tea and coffee bar, including waters and food. She arranged the folders and set name tags out. The Council of Holy Beings and the Youaki Lord's were meeting together to discuss possible solutions of their mutual problems. She snorted at the thought, mutual problems. They only problem was Youaki were being attacked along with those who "sympathized" with them. Setting Hojo's name tag down, she frowned darkly.
He had changed, his aura had pressed against her own too many times for her liking. The power he wielded was nothing like that of his boy years. Her stomach rolled at the thought, it was all wrong. Her eyebrows wrinkled together, her eyes glazing over in thought. Sesshomaru entered the room then, seeing her hand holding the name tag. He frowned to himself, not liking the look on her face.
"Koi" he said, attempting to rouse her, only to find himself ignored.
A small voice, in the back of her head sounded. A whisper, like if you turned your head to fast and your mind plays tricks. His aura. It had been colorless, when he had first seen her. But the feeling of nausea had sparked something in her. The need to protect herself, it had sent her own aura flaring to the surface. She had been angry with him when she had interacted with him, it had clouded her judgment then.
Sesshomaru took ahold of the place card and then her hand. Her eyes snapped to his face, realizing she had zoned out. He had searched her face for an answer, worried now.
"Lord Sesshomaru" she said, forgoing any familiarity even when alone.
"Are you alright?" he asked, holding her hand still in his grasp.
"I zoned out, it won't happen again," she said shortly, pulling her hand from him.
"What was it, you looked angry"
"Because I am. Now I must finish the rest of this" she said, turning from him.
"Kagome enough of this," he snapped, his anger getting the better of him.
She whirled around then, fire licking at her insides. Enough of this. Like this was something minor and she should be over it.
"Excuse me?" she asked, astounded he had said it really.
"Tell me what is wrong," he said, trying to keep her focus on what had just happened. The meeting was drawing near, and he just heard the elevator sound.
"You are what is wrong. You and everything else with this whole fucking situation," she hissed out venomously
"I am talking about what just happened not the disagreement- "
"Disagreement?! Is that what you call this?" she asked, angrily.
"I meant" she cut him off again.
"You meant a lot of things. Yet they don't mean anything to you, right?!" she asked, anger twisting her features.
"Get out" he snarled as the Southern Lord attempted to enter the room. Some people have absolutely no sense.
She stood there which only taunted him more. "You appeared upset at this monk" he ground out, purposefully ignoring her jabs. She had wanted a reaction, but he was unable to provide it at the current time.
"His power has grown" she said coldly, understanding she would not receive the satisfaction of a response from him.
"Unusually?" he asked, place the card on the table.
"Yes, now if that is all-"he had gripped her waist as she meant to turn from him. His mouth crashed upon hers. If she wanted a reaction, this was the one she was going to get. She pressed her palms against him, his muscles vibrating under her hands.
"You jackass" she breathed into him, the pair suddenly fighting for dominance.
"Yes, I am and I am sorry" he whispered, his lips traveling down her neck with feather light kisses.
"It's not okay what you did" she said, his nose tracing the soft spot between her collar bones.
"No, it was selfish and prideful. I am not sorry for all of it after the accident, I am sorry how it made you feel though" he explained, his scent filling his head.
"I'm afraid one day you will tell me this was because of her" Kagome confessed. Yes, her anger had been the forefront, but her fears had lingered as well.
"No, you… You are not Rin. You are Kagome. That is who this side of me is for" he answered, the naked honesty surprising himself.
"I'm sorry I brought her up in the fight. That was a low blow I shouldn't have done." She said, she had truly felt the guilt after she had time to cool her head. It had been unfair to place the blame at Rin's feet.
"I am sorry for suggesting you could not take care of yourself. I know how much pride you take in that. It was a cruel thing to say" he said, his forehead resting on her shoulder.
She felt the weight of the tension for the past two weeks then, they had hardly spoken in that time. She had pushed down the emptiness she had felt when going to bed at night. Her shoulder relaxed as she leaned her own head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry I acted out rather then speaking to you. I just… I am still… trying to process" she said softly, muffled voices sounding in the hallway.
"I know and I haven't helped by not respecting that. Can I take you out to lunch today? I miss you" he said against her skin.
"I have missed you as well. Only if you pick your favorite place to go" she said with a soft chuckle.
"You drive a hard bargain Ms. Higurashi" he said, before capturing her lips.
