Chapter 69: The Battle of New Year's Eve
The Berry Pirates dashed up the stairway as the alarm blared and marines shouted from above and below them. Mimi and Pakkun leapt upward and bounced off of the walls as they quickly ascended the stairway and slammed into marines with their Fang Over Fang.
They arrived on the third floor of the marine base and were met by a unit of marines who shouted and fired their weapons at the pirates. Chi-Chi waved her hands and a ripping torrent of wind altered the trajectory of the bullets and sent them up into the ceiling. Mayuri laughed heartily and patted her on the shoulder as the marines gaped at the crew.
Vector skipped forward and used the powers of his Spin-Spin Fruit to rapidly twist his body and propel himself forward. He crashed into the marines and sent them sprawling as the others charged forward and trampled over the fallen marines.
"We've gotta catch up to the others!" Mayuri bellowed as the group of them charged onward.
"Don't worry, we'll catch up to them in no time." Shikamaru said with a grin.
Sonja Shaved ahead of the others as a handful of marines appeared in front of them. She quickly barraged a flurry of Finger Pistols that pierced the marines and dropped them gruesomely. She smiled as she wiped the blood from her finger and the others dashed passed her as they moved on.
A unit of marines stood down the hall from them and opened fire on the approaching pirate crew. They ducked to either side and took cover from the hail of gunfire and listened as the marines shouted around to each other.
A man's voice suddenly sounded out, erupting over the shouts and gunshots as if magnified by machinery. "Come out with your hands out! Surrender now and you can keep your lives!"
"Commodore Francis!" Marines shouted happily.
Mayuri laughed and looked at his crew, "Let's give 'em hell!"
The Berry Pirates dashed out from behind cover and the marines opened fire on them. Chi-Chi deflected a mass of bullets with a torrent of wind as Vector, Mimi and Pakkun leapt up and spun rapidly through the air. The others scattered around and Shikamaru deflected bullets with his blades as he Shaved around.
Izuru waved his hands and conjured ropes that he used to entangle marines, subduing them and spinning them overhead before slamming them into other marines. He Shaved around and shot ropes that wrapped around the necks, hands and feets of the unfortunate fodder that surrounded him.
Commodore Francis activated thrusters on his back and legs that propelled himself forward toward Izuru with frightening speed, he slammed a powerful left hook that struck the Longarm in the jaw and sent him reeling back. Francis delivered a strong right jab into Izuru's chest and ducked beneath Vector as he flew passed and barreled into a few marines.
Mimi and Pakkun bounced around quickly and slammed into Francis' chest, sending him stumbling back as Sonja skips up and strikes him in the left leg with a wicked kick. Francis gritted his teeth and exchanged blows with Sonja before she skipped back and grinned at him.
Francis lifted his arms up and unloaded the machine guns in his arms at the pirates that were slaughtering his men. He dashed around and caught Mimi by the right ankle as she bounced around. He gripped her tightly and slammed her down into the floor and ducked out of the way of Pakkun.
The Commodore leapt out of the way of flying slashes from Shikamaru and he Shaved at Mayuri. He slammed a fierce punch into the pirate Captain and the man erupted into around two dozen balls of varying sizes.
One of the balls was Mayuri's face and he cackled as Francis skipped away. Mayuri controlled his pieces and hurled the balls forward, barraging Francis with several dozen powerful blows! Francis was sent reeling back and Mayuri reformed as he continued laughing, "It doesn't matter how strong you are, punches and kicks don't phase me!"
The Berry Pirates beat through the unit of marines and left Commodore Francis broken and bloody on the floor as they continued onward through the marine base. The alarm continued blaring and Mayuri laughed as more marines rushed to stand in their way.
"Red Ripper!" Ragnar spun around wickedly and cleaved through six marines with his twisted greataxe. Blood sprayed across the floor and walls as the pieces of marines toppled over.
Duros dashed forward, his armor clanking rhythmically as he spun his longsword around in his hand. He clashed blades with a marine and swiftly cut him down before cutting down another that tried to rush passed him. He pressed onward and clashed blades with a trio of sword wielding marines, "Come on, then!"
Willem fired his pistols quickly, gunning down marines as they dashed down the hallway. He reloaded his guns and scanned the room as the Enigma Pirates and marines clashed viciously. He smiled and lifted his guns up, firing both and watching as more marines fell. "They just keep coming!" He chuckled.
Chihiro and Pearl leapt around together, teaming up to take down marines as they desperately tried to reform their ranks. Chihiro lunged forward and struck a marine in the chin with a swift jab as Pearl leapt over them and pounced onto another marine. They beat them down and Shaved around quickly as they looked for more prey.
More marines arrived in the medical reception bay and moved to support their comrades. Four of the newly arriving marines aimed their rifles at Lucy and fired while she had her back turned. Lee crossed the fingers of his left hand and a dark green square-shaped barrier appeared behind her. The bullets deflected off of the barrier and Lucy looked over her shoulder casually.
The barrier behind Lucy disappeared as Lee skipped forward at the four marines and crossed his fingers on both hands. Barriers appeared around his hands as he lunged forward and sent a barrage of savage blows that sent the marines reeling backward. Lee stood over the beaten marines and sighed as the barriers disappeared from his hands.
Lucy raised her left hand and yanked a handful of marines into the air, she grinned as she spun her finger around and the marines began twirling rapidly around the room. She clenched her fist and marines were pulled together, slamming into one another and falling to the floor.
"Don't overdo yourself!" Lee called out as he dodged the swing of a sword and exchanged blows with a marine.
Lucy panted heavily as dull waves of fatigue washed over her body. "I've got it under control." She called out as she unsheathed her sword and swiftly cut down three marines that charged at her.
The Enigma Pirates picked up their pace and swiftly shredded through the onslaught of marines in the reception bay. They took a few moments to catch their breath and continued onward across the fourth floor as the siren blared, wiiiiiiooooouuuuuuu!
On the third floor, the Flower Pirates dashed down a hallway as marines shouted and pursued them from behind. They continued onward down the hallway and turned left, moving down another hall for several meters before coming to a large chamber where various halls intersected.
Sakura sighed and looked around at the openings to the many halls, "I'm sick of running around this place."
Tiger Lily chuckled, "Don't lose focus now, Captain, our friends are catching up quick."
Marines dashed down the hallway behind the crew and a few of them fired their rifles as they went. Daisy grinned as she lit the fuses of three black powder bombs and tossed them into the hall at the approaching marines. They heard screams of panic and then a roaring explosion that stopped the pursuers in their tracks.
"Nice job, Daisy." Tulip chuckled and nodded her head.
Sakura raised an eyebrow and looked at Kosai, "Where to?"
Kosai closed her eyes and held her hand against her temple as she used the powers of her Glare-Glare Fruit. She opened her eyes and pointed at one of the hallways in the chamber, "That one."
The Flower Pirates dashed onward down another hallway as the siren continued to blare throughout the marine base. They moved quickly and down the hall and eventually came to a right turn before coming face to face with another unit of marines.
The marines opened fire on the cluster of pirates and the girls scrambled quickly to scatter apart. Rose, Daisy, Posy and Blossom leapt around and bounced off of the walls in rapid succession as the others dodged around the bullets.
Tulip and Iris Shaved at the unit of marines and barraged swift strikes at them as the four girls in the air suddenly fell onto them from above. Sakura, Kosai and Tiger Lily dashed forward and leapt into the skirmish with their crewmates, barraging deadly blows as they pushed the marines back.
The crew broke past the marines and continued down the hallway before erupting out into another chamber. Dozens of marines turned to face the Flower Pirates as they arrived and quickly jumped into action.
Commander Lisa and Ensign Leorio dashed forward as the surrounding marines fell into ranks. Lisa leapt up and sent a Tempest Kick flying down at the group of pirates, causing them to scatter. Around. Leorio Shaved at Sakura and Kosai appeared beside him and sent a powerful kick into the side of his head.
Sakura dodged a flurry of bullets and slammed a series of wicked kicks into a group of marines as she dashed around the chamber. She exchanged blows with a tall marine with a square head when another marine lunged forward and slashed her across the face with a cutlass.
Blood poured from the jagged wound on Sakura's face and Tiger Lily skipped up and kicked the two marines back before touching Sakura on the shoulder. Activating the power of her Redo-Redo Fruit she reversed the last ten seconds from Sakura's body, making it so she had never suffered the injury to her face.
The two marines lunged forward but Sakura and Tiger Lily Shaved behind the men before jabbing them in the back with a flurry of Finger Pistols. The marines hit the ground and the two pirates exchanged a look before jumping back into the battle.
The Enigma Pirates dashed across the fourth floor as they cut through marines and sought out the commanding Vice-Admiral of the base. The group of them came to a long chamber that was typically used for trials among the marines when the alarm suddenly shut off.
Several doors that led to smaller rooms burst open and waves of marines erupted into the courtroom. A massive man charged passed the other marines and stood tall as his men got into their positions and took aim at the pirates.
"God dammit…" Lee muttered.
"Aha, sir Armstrong." Duros said cheerfully.
"Of course, it would have to be you." Lucy smirked at Vice-Admiral Armstrong.
Armstrong nodded and smiled sadly, "Lady Lucy, I'm sorry to meet you and your crew on terms such as these." The muscular Vice-Admiral took a couple of steps forward, "I know you won't surrender."
Lucy grinned, "You've got that right." She gripped the hilt of her sword tightly in her right hand as she eyed the surrounding marines. "You have information that I'd very much like to have for myself."
"Who is this guy?" Pearl whispered.
"That's Vice-Admiral Armstrong." Willem whispered back.
"The manliest man in the marines." Duros added with a smile.
"And he was already freakishly strong before he ate the Buff-Buff Fruit." Lee said seriously, "Stay on your toes, guys."
Armstrong laughed, "It's nice to get such praise from you kids." He flexed his muscles and his shirt ripped apart as the bottom of his pant legs split open. He grinned widely and prepared himself for anything.
"Trap him!" Lucy raised her left hand slightly and moved her fingers, swapping places with Armstrong as Lee conjured a rectangular prism barrier that trapped the Vice-Admiral inside!
The marines opened fire with various guns as others charged forward with swords and spears. The Enigma Pirates moved quickly to face the surrounding marines as their commander stood trapped in his prison.
Ragnar laughed as he launched forward and spun around in circles as he gripped his greataxe tightly and cleaved through a handful of charging marines, "Red Ripper!" He tears through five marines, killing them instantly as three others reeled back with missing limbs.
Lee ducked beneath the swing of a spear and skipped away from incoming marines. The middle and index fingers on his left hand remained crossed as he concentrated on the incoming attackers while keeping his barrier up. He skipped up on top of Armstong's prison and launched himself up into the air before sending a flurry of Tempest Kicks downward.
While marines were being sliced apart, Willem danced around incoming marines and fired his pistols rapidly at them. Bodies fell down around him and he holstered his pistols as they ran out of bullets. He ducked beneath a kick and yanked a dirk from his boot, jamming it into the gut of a marine as he popped back up.
Duros raised his shield with his left arm and blocked a downward swing from a marine's mace and he plunged his sword into the chest of a marine charging in from his right. He yanked his blade free from the man on his right and skipped back as the marine with the mace charged after him. He blocked another strike with his shield and sliced the marine's left arm off with an upward slice.
Pearl jabbed two marines in the chest with Finger Pistols and ducked under a thrust from a spear before Shaving off to her right. A stray bullet grazed her left shoulder and a marine slammed an elbow into her forehead. She reeled back and blocked a sloppy kick before slamming a savage punch into the chest of the marine.
Chihiro spotted Pearl across the chamber and Shaved around marines as she moved to reach her. A marine swung his sword and slashed Chihiro up the side and she stumbled to her right. She dodged a second swing of the sword and slammed a swift kick into the head of the marine before moving onward through the chaos.
Lucy swung her sword through several marines as she dashed around and kept an eye on her crew. She dodged kicks and slashes from incoming marines and ducked under stray bullets before clashing blades with a marine who stood over eight feet tall!
"Rear Admiral Raizo?!" Lucy gaped and continued clashing blades with him as they danced around the chamber.
"You punks have caused enough trouble here!" Raizo bellowed and slammed a kick into Lucy's stomach.
She stumbled back and her eyes widened as Raizo's enormous sword came down at her, "Shambles!" She switched places with an unsuspecting marine who was cleaved in two by the heavy swing.
Lee Shaved passed a group of marines as he rushed to help out Lucy and a stray bullet caught him in the back, "Agh!" He watched as Lucy and Raizo continued their clash and a handful of marines surrounded him.
The chaotic skirmish raged on as the Enigma Pirates fought hard and in a sudden exchange of blows, Lee's fingers were uncrossed and Vice-Admiral Armstrong was released from his prison.
On the third floor of the marine base, the Berry Pirates and Sakura Pirates met up in a wide room that led to the staircase. Units of marines chased after them and stood in their way as the crews dashed onward.
The pirates and marines clashed violently as blood was spilled and guns were fired rapidly. Blades collided and chaos raged on wickedly as the siege of the base continued.
The marines shouted and moved to surround the pirates as more and more of them arrived on the scene. Mayuri laughed wickedly and looked sideways at Sakura, "These guys are like cockroaches, they just keep coming."
"Then we'll just keep crushing them." Sakura replied and smiled slightly.
The ceiling shook violently and cracked as pieces fell down onto the room they all occupied. Many of the marines looked up and the pirates pounced on them in the moment of confusion. Sakura dashed around and slammed a series of kicks into marines as Mayuri swung his cutlass and slammed his fist into surrounding marines.
The ceiling shook again and the cracks grew quickly before a massive eruption shattered the stone hanging above them! Large chunks of the ceiling rained down and crushed marines as they panicked and scrambled to get away. Dust and debris were scattered around the room and dozens of people fell down a split second after the rubble settled.
"Holy hell!"
"Look out!"
"We've gotta pull him out! He's trapped under there!"
Many screams and shouts filled the room as the cloud of dust floated around and obscured everyone's vision for a few moments. Sakura blinked a few times and looked around before she spotted Lee sprawled out on the ground.
She dashed over and helped him up to his feet as he slowly regained consciousness. Lee looked at Sakura and spoke softly, "Help Lucy."
Sakura looked up at the fresh hole created by the collapse and saw Lucy clashing blades with an enormous man. A very muscular man then walked to the edge of the hole on the fourth floor and looked down at the scrambling marines and pirates below.
"Armstrong is a monster." Lee muttered and shook his head as he snapped back to reality.
Vice-Admiral Armstrong pointed down at Lee and shouted, "You have a dangerous ability now, Lee. I'll put you and these other pirates down quickly." He Shaved down into the room on the third floor and Lee just barely managed to create a barrier that shielded himself and Sakura from Armstong's fierce punch as he appeared in front of them.
A shockwave rattled the area and Armstrong was suddenly replaced with Raizo in the blink of an eye. The tall man looked confused for a second and then turned to look down at Lee and Sakura. The Rear Admiral raised his sword up and Lee pushed his barrier into Raizo, knocking him backward and sending him stumbling.
The pirates collected themselves and looked around, each spotting the tall man with a humongous sword. Mayuri grinned as he looked at Raizo and he looked around at his crewmates as they slowly arrived around him. He pointed his cutlass at the Rear Admiral, "Let's get the big guy."
Lucy ducked beneath a swift kick from Armstrong and leapt up into the air. She spun around and sent three flying slashes down at the Vice-Admiral. Armstrong dodged between the flying slashes and skipped up into the air at her.
In the blink of an eye, Lucy swapped places with a random marine and cut down others as she dashed toward Armstrong as he landed on the broken floor. As she ran, Lucy spotted Duros, Ragnar, Willem and Pearl. Where are the other two?
Armstrong spotted Lucy and his left elbow shook violently before he thrust it at her, "Hado Elbow!" Lucy's eyes widened as she hurtled toward him and an immense wave of pressure slammed into her like a brick wall.
Lucy was sent flying back over the wide hole in the floor and slammed into the wall on the other side of the chamber. She slumped down to the floor and breathed heavily as she watched Armstrong suddenly disappear and appear beside her.
The towering man brought his fist downward and Lucy rolled out of the way. She skipped up to her feet as Armstong shattered the floor even further. Lucy raised her left index finger, "Takt!" Loosened pieces of the floor shot upward and slammed into the Vice-Admiral's chin and left cheek.
Armstrong winced for a second and Lucy skipped forward, she swung her sword upward but her attack was stopped as Armstrong hardened his chest with Haki. The two of them exchanged a rapid flurry of blows and Lucy swapped places with a marine before taking a moment to catch her breath.
She looked up and watched as Armstong barreled straight at her. She Shaved forward and thrust her sword into the Vice-Admiral's chest, "Injection Shot!" Even though Armstrong protected his body with Haki, Lucy's attack struck him internally and sent him reeling back as he coughed up blood.
Lucy grinned as she and Armstrong skipped away from each other. She breathed heavily and Armstrong wiped blood from his mouth, "Your Devil Fruit is quite a nuisance… It's a shame that you had to steal it from the marines."
Lucy laughed, "You know what they wanted to use it for. I may be a pirate but I'm not as bad as the Celestial Dragons."
Armstrong smiled and nodded his head slowly, "Alright then. Let's end this foolishness."
Lucy gripped her sword tightly, "Yeah." She and Armstrong skipped at each other quickly and clashed once more.
