Gilbert: Dang. This is Nassau?
Catherine: Hurts when you have few resources, doesn't it? When there's nothing to steal, how do you live? Nassau's become poisoned, my friends. It's become darkened with turmoil, where we have little food...less water... Oh, the agony of it all!
Harrison: Not to mention Elaine and Kevin are still butting heads. And for what?
Gilbert: What else could go wrong?
Anne: Another?
Elaine: A rum flip this time.
Anne: And where'd I find fresh eggs in this wretched town? There's little else but piss and insects.
Elaine: Aye. We're working on that.
Rackham: Dear lady, what do they call you?
Anne: Anne, when they're sober. A jilt when they're sauced. But never Lady.
Rackham: Well, goodly Anne I- Ah!
Vane: Bag of shite! Do you hear me? It's a bag of bloody shite! It's a ruse to keep us soft before they attack Nassau! You'll see. Mark me.
Thatch: It's no ruse, Vane. I heard it straight from the mouth of a greasy Bermudan captain. There's a pardon on offer for any pirate that wants it.
Hornigold: Ruse or not, I think it's plain the British may return to Nassau. With arms no doubt. We'll need a plan.
Thatch: Walk with us, Kenway. There's trouble brewing...
Hornigold: In the absence of any clear ideas, I say we lay low. No piracies and no violence. Do nothing to ruffle the King's feathers for now.
Thatch: Preserving the king's plumage is no concern of mine, Ben.
Hornigold: It will be when he sends his soldiers to scrub this island clean of our residue! Look around you, man. Is this cesspool worth dying for?
Thatch: Aye! It's our republic! Our idea! A free land for free men, remember? So maybe it's filthy to look at. But ain't it still an idea worth fighting for?
Hornigold: I can't be sure. For when I look on the fruits of our years of labor, all I see is sickness... Idleness.. Idiocy.
Thatch: Not a sunbeam of difference between here and London then, eh?
Elaine: Thatch is right, man. Taking a wide view, we're not doing so bad out here. There's sun, rum, and leisure as far as the eye can see.
Hornigold: Aye, Nassau may look fine from a distance, but at its core there's a disease I cannot stomach.
Elaine: Sickness can be cured, Ben. If only you have the right medicine.
Hornigold: But a corpse cannot be reanimated!
Thatch: I can't believe the shite I'm hearing drop from your lips! Why not take the pardon now and be done with it!
Elaine: Peace! Both of you. We can satisfy both aims if we work together. Find medicines to ease our burdens here, but in a way that don't attract the British.
Thatch: I'd wager the nearest doctor is sitting pretty in Havana. Not a place I mean to go.
Edward: The Spanish fleet that sunk two years back would have some medicine. All sealed up in glass vials.
Thatch: You'd need a diving bell to reach those depths.
Elaine: Aye. And with some coin and a few supplies, a diving bell won't be hard to come by.
Hornigold: This is a plan I can stand behind. Find medicines without stirring up trouble. Agreed, Thatch?
Thatch: Agreed, aye. I'll meet you near the wrecks as soon as you're able, Kenway.
Hornigold: Remember, Thatch! Keep your cannons corked!
Thatch: Piss off, Ben!
(After Elaine bought a diving bell, she and the others met up with Thatch.)
Elaine: Devil in his hole, Thatch! This is a darling galley. Thirty-two guns, is it?
Thatch: I lost count at forty.
Elaine: You've stepped up a rung. So... Any luck finding medicines here?
Thatch: Nothing 'round this spot, sadly. But there's a few wrecks yonder that haven't been scoured by nothing but crabs and coral.
Elaine: I'll have a look.
Sarah: Elaine? Elaine, is that you? My goodness, the West Indies is a compact place!
Elaine: 'Allo, Bonnet. A surprise seeing you out here.
Sarah: I met Mister Thatch a month or so ago and he offered to take me under his yardarms, so to speak. Says I must wash the hayseed from my hair before I'm a true pirate.
Elaine: Well, good luck to you then. Worse men have become better under Blackbeard's watch.
Catherine: Uh, Kevin. Why don't you join our friend in her underwater expedition, OK?
Elaine and Kevin: WHAT?
Catherine: Oh, don't be like that! If we are to salvage Nassau and see our ambitions through, we'll need to work as a crew again.
(Although hesitant, Kevin joins Elaine in searching the waters for medicines. Avoiding sharks on their way out, they eventually returned to the surface via Thatch's bell.)
Thatch: Ahoy! Any luck?
Elaine: I found one crate hidden beneath a school of sharks. Sadly, the elixir inside is... quite spoilt.
Thatch: Plague and perish! Will we steal medicines now?
Elaine: Remember the pardon, Thatch. We're to be subtle.
Thatch: Says Hornigold! A pirate now too proud to call himself one!
Elaine: Ah, he prefers caution to cannons.
Thatch: Caution's nothing without charisma! For if a man plays the fool, then it's only fools he'll persuade. But appear to be the devil, and all men will submit.
Elaine: And would you be the devil?
Thatch: For an audience, aye. It's all a big show. Give your quarry something to fear, some hellish thing from a fever'd dream, and men will drop to their knees pleading for their Lord before aught else!
Sarah: Oh God...
Elaine: Looks fine.
Thatch: 'Course it does. If you can find a quiet way to acquire medicines, tell me soon. Otherwise, I'll handle it meself.
There was something about Blackbeard's personality that didn't seem to sit well with Kevin. But he was about to be tested while on his own search for medicines...
Darius: So, how's the Savior holding up?
Kevin: It's brilliant, truthfully. But, how are we to find medicines out here or without a diving bell?
Darius: I'm afraid my vessel cannot comply with such a tool in her arsenal.
Catherine: Well then, buy one!
Darius: And risk my neck again, trying to pilfer Reales from a soldier or even guardsmen?
Kevin: If it comes to that, yes!
Darius: That may work for your type, but never for me! I...
Gilbert: Incoming!
Catherine: Oh no, it's a British Man O' War!
Harrison: Maybe it has what we're looking for.
Kevin: True, but we can't be certain that it does.
Darius: Well, there's no ship out there that the Savior has never left standing and there won't be one today! It's time to uncork the cannons, unload the fire barrels, and really give King George something to worry about! Are you with me?
Catherine, Gilbert, Harrison, Kevin, and Zoe: AYE!
(The six immediately pit the Savior against the enemy ship, decisively incapacitating it)
Darius: Ha! This treasure you're harboring means nothing. Desperado Darius is back in the Caribbean, ¡pequeños camarones! And there's nothing you girls can do about it.(Everyone else is impressed)
Kevin(to himself): Now, that there's a pirate!
Darius: We're sailors like yourselves, but quite unalike in our purpose. For we intend to take all that you own. Yet no harm shall befall any man, so long as he remains at ease. Is that clear? Now, as for you, my dear captain... Tell your friends we're stealing your goods. And we won't hurt nobody if everyone stays as still as a sandbar. You got that?
Zoe: Wow. Darius is muy macho.
Darius: Now, I'm feeling quite good about the resources you have already laid out for the taking, so we'll leave you now with all of it.
(Afterward)
Gilbert: Whoo! Can you believe it? Desperado Darius. And we actually got to see him in action!
Catherine: Definitely feeling those vibes.(They all meet up with Elaine and found Hornigold's ship, the Benjamin, which was in the process of being fixed up.)
Elaine: What the hell's happened here? Were you attacked?
Hornigold: Other way 'round. It were Blackbeard who struck first. Opened fire on a British Man O' War, the pillock!
Darius: What in God's name for?
Hornigold: Still searching for medicines. But he's gone barmy if you ask me.
Elaine: We'll bring him home.
Hornigold: Leave him, man! He's heaped this trouble on himself!
While Elaine, Ava, and Nathaniel were awed by the Savior, all eight sailors were appalled by what they saw.
Ava: Captain, there's a wreck yonder. Looks recent!
Elaine: I see it. Let's hope Thatch hasn't come to the same end.
(They soon spotted another one)
Catherine: Another bit of wreckage, captain. This is looking grim.
Darius: Aye. Keep your eyes peeled. Blast! This is getting well out of hand.
Nathaniel: A dozen crates of medicine should not be so hard to come by.
Elaine: That ain't my meaning. It's Thatch and Hornigold and this pointless feud of theirs. Can't you feel it?
Ava: I do, aye. But both men have their hearts in a good place. Both want the best for the people of Nassau.
Elaine: But is that the best course for us? Saving a city that ain't worth much? We're not men made to govern. We take and spend, and live heartily... wherever we go.
Ava: What solution would you propose?
Elaine: The answer's in wealth and power, not politics. If we found the Observatory, we'd see enough money to buy the whole of England. Or it might be... we'd lord over these kings and emperors like they was peasants themselves.
Darius: A lot of large talk, captain. But is it your crew you sail for... or yourself?
Elaine: I mean the best for these men, friend. I do. But this don't sit right. I feel like I'm running errands, not living my life.
Zoe: Well, try telling that to Blackbeard himself, lads!
Elaine: There's no time for a vote. Thatch is outnumbered.
Nathaniel: The crew'll understand. Beat to quarters, lads! We're sailing into hell!
Elaine: Thatch is overwhelmed. I'm going ashore.
Ava: I'll keep the Jackdaw circling.
Nathaniel: Same here.
Darius: Catherine, keep the wind where it blows, This desperado is still looking for a good thrashing!
Thatch: Did all your book-learning prepare you for a scuffle of this sort, Missus Bonnet?
Sarah: Not in the least, no.
Thatch: For certain, there's more to be learned by doing than reading. Remember that!
Elaine: You stirred up a nest of trouble, Thatch!
Thatch: In service of a noble cause.
Elaine: Medicines, I hope you mean!
Thatch: Aye. A galleon nearby. And if we crack these lobsters quick, we might catch up to her.
Sarah: Oh God! Some aid here! Elaine! Please!
Elaine: Hang in there, Bonnet! Keep your arms up and your back to the sea! You don't do nothing subtle, do ya, Thatch?
Thatch: Legends ain't born from mildness.
Sarah: Ah! Gentlemen, our galleon has reappeared!
Elaine: Heads up!
Thatch: Back to my ship, quick as you please. It'll not slip away now!
Sarah: Oh, this is too much!
Thatch: I'll see you back to your Jackdaw when the smoke has cleared. But for now I need a helmsman.
Elaine: Call it out!
Thatch: Loose the mains! And head straight for that bloody ship. We'll have our medicines in little time at all!
(Elaine took control of the ship and battled the Man O' War.)
Crewman: We're short on powder, Captain!
Thatch: Blast! And the Galleon's all but sunk!
Edward: I'm seeing the devil you promised, Thatch.
Thatch: Argh... I'd have shown them my angel if they'd taken quarter. But there's no going back now! So ram that bastard! With all the wind you've got! She's cracked, lads! Send 'em to hell! Find the captain and END this.
(Elaine killed the captain and the ship was conquered.)
Thatch: I'm not a man accustomed to murder, captain. And if you'd taken quarter, you'd not be seeping now.
Captain: Suck a muzzle, gobshite. You'll be hanged and sun-dried, just as them that were in Boston.
Thatch: The King's called for a pardon!
Darius: Or didn't you know about that?
Hands: Captain... we've searched the hold. It's a middling take, but the medicine we found bears a Charles-Towne stamp.
Thatch: Thank you, Mr. Hands.
Elaine: We cannot resupply Nassau out here by force and accident alone. We should go to Charles-Towne for the lot.
Sarah: Hello! A-are we victorious? I fear I am not built for the fatigue and care required to live as a man of fortune.
Thatch: Meet me in Charles-towne. One month from today.
Elaine was proud to have a friend in Desperado Darius, and the man himself felt the same. Still, she was sad to see that Blackbeard was retiring. But Nassau's troubles were far from over...
Rackham: Well, I'll be hanged. King George has grown tired of our shenanigans. Who's the grim fella?
Elaine: That's Captain Woodes Rogers. Not a man I want seeing my face.
Catherine: And look who else is in our turf, boys.
Kevin: Pauline. So, Daddy decided to be the nice guy again, eh?
Rogers: We desire a parlay with the men who call themselves governors of this island! Charles Vane, Ben Hornigold, and Ed Thatch! Come forth, if you please.
Rackham: Here about the king's pardon, I reckon.
Harrison: What the hell is Hornigold doing?
Rackham: Lily-livered punk!
Elaine: What are you men up to?
Rogers: I am grateful for your geniality, Captain Hornigold. I assumed our reception would be a troubled one.
Hornigold: Don't mistake my decorum for deference, governor. I'm eager to hear what you have to say, but of uncertain mind otherwise.
Rogers: Very well put. And it's a fairer shake than I expected to see from any pirate. But I promise fair treatment to all who hear me out.
Chamberlaine: Only wait a while longer, Governor Rogers! These rascals'll show their true colours in time.
Rogers: Calm, Commodore Chamberlaine. I have given Captain Hornigold my word that we will be equitable.
Chamberlaine: Won't do you a lick of good! Men like him are a blight on His Majesty's reputation, and a peculiar cancer afflicting the new world. The King wants them eradicated above all else.
Rogers: Is this the town square?
Hornigold: As close to one as we've ever had.
Rogers: Incredible. It's no cleaner than a dog's kennel. Captain Hornigold, please call your men.
Hornigold: Rackham! Vane! The governor's come calling. Bring Burgess and Cockram as well.
Chamberlaine: Fan out, lads! And take this shantytown as if it were your own!
Rogers: Aye, but the king has been particularly ineffective in bringing about this change, hasn't he? And has failed at all attempts until now.
Chamberlaine: Careful how you talk about His Majesty, governor. You're here at his pleasure.
Rogers: I have my methods, Commodore, and I expect you to honor them to the letter! Disperse, the lot of you. Make way for the King's emissaries!
Chamberlaine: Out of the way, you bastards! Go on!
Rogers: Our only aim here is to treat with the masters of this community. All others are encouraged to go about their usual business!
Chamberlaine: Go on, move! Go!
Rogers: Commodore Chamberlaine, please see that all merchants, masons, and carpenters are rounded up and brought to me this afternoon. We must see about repairing this fortress.
Chamberlaine: We should be confiscating weapons, Governor. Send these pirates a clear, strong message that the King's emissaries are not to be trifled with.
Rogers: I have no wish to stir up animosity here, Commodore. And though well-armed, we are outnumbered by a decent margin. Slow persuasion is our best and most efficient weapon.
Chamberlaine: Twaddle, governor. We should sink every goddamn ship not flying the King's colours. To do otherwise projects a certain weakness in our bearing.
Rogers: Silence, Commodore! I am the goddamned governor here, serving at the King's pleasure, and I will make the bloody decisions. Is that clear, sir?
Chamberlaine: Aye, sir. Your wishes are clear as crystal.
Soldier: These are the charts, Commodore. We're in position.
Chamberlaine: Governor Rogers believes he can make men of these monkeys yet. I do not. Return to your post and await my orders.
The more Elaine and the others thought about it, the more it drove them bonkers. A pardon from the King? Why, it was...it was...
Catherine: Ridiculous! Utterly ridiculous!
Vane: Oh, thank you, Sir! God save you!
Hornigold: Look on this as a stroke of fortune, lads. We should take the King's pardon and salvage what dignity we own.
Vane: Oh, piss! I'll be hanged before I surrender to that bobbin.
Hornigold: Check your head, Vane! We had here a rare opportunity; a chance to take something base and shape it into a government, made and maintained by men of vision. But in two years we pissed it away. I won't make that mistake again.
Cockram: It's truth he's telling. And you whelps can't handle it.
Burgess: Bye! Ye fo'c'sle-headed fuddlers! See you at the gallows.
Vane: You'll all be dead men! Bastards! I need a drink.
Pauline: Let me through!
Daniel: I'm afraid that your father ordered us to stay with you at all times...
Zachary: Aye, that he did.
Matthias: Well then, which one of you will explain that to Lady Antonia if it ever comes to that?
Catherine: Kevin, look. Nine rings, two amulets.
Kevin: Then we'd better follow where this is going.
Pauline: Thanks.
Matthias: Why do you want to see the Governor so bad?
Pauline: I was hoping you'd get to know him. After all, what you've been dragged into isn't all that bad.
Matthias: Not all bad? What does a pardon on piracy have to do with universal order.
Pauline: To our kind, it doesn't matter. Uphold the principles of our order and all that for which we stand. Never share our secrets nor divulge the true nature of our work. Do so until death- whatever the cost. To guide all wayward souls 'til they reach a quiet road. To guide all wayward desire 'til impassioned hearts are cooled. To guide all wayward minds to safe and sober thought. This is who we are, no matter how troubling. You are what Lady Antonia calls "one of awakened mind and soul".
Matthias: Well, I guess there isn't any shame in bringing this world to order. Then again...(Kevin and the others soon realize that they've been spotted)
Pauline: I thought I'd recognized those faces.
Kevin: Then why don't you surrender your treasures now, before we have to turn to violence in order to...(Matthias throws a rock at a guard, who turns around)
Matthias: He did it.(Pointing at Kevin, who realizes there'll be trouble coming if he and the others don't scram. Though they manage to escape, Kevin is feeling angered)
Kevin: A pox on those sinister siblings! Next time I see them, I won't be fooled twice!(The others nod)
Vane: Look at them turncoats. Makes me bloody ill to think how many times I put up with Hornigold and his self-righteous shite.
Rogers: Verily, you are a man of principle, Captain Hornigold. A man I believe I can trust with my best ideas.
Edward: Faith, and we'll survive this, Charles. With our pride intact.
Vane: Well, that's confidence. You brewed a plan I might get a taste of?
Elaine: Nassau is over, that's plain to see. I say we skip out tonight, and regroup at my compound.
Vane: Fair enough. What's your angle?
Elaine: The Brits have brought their supplies ashore, see? If we nick some gunpowder and pine pitch, we can build a fire ship and send it straight at the blockade, blasting it to smithereens.
Vane: Aye. We'll use Rackham's ship. He ain't a capable captain.
Elaine: My conscience is clear.
Vane: Right. While you get up the gunpowder, I'll secure the pine pitch.
(Elaine robbed four gunpowder storages.)
Captain: The Commodore fears a revolt is nigh. His orders are to sink every goddamned pirate ship now anchored in that harbour. Tonight.
Lieutenant: Despite the Governor's wishes, sir?
Captain: This is a direct order, soldier! You will take position on the grounded galleon, and await the Commodore's further orders. Is that clear?
Lieutenant: Aye sir!
Vane: That conniving bastard! Someone ought to slit the Commodore's throat before he gets a chance to bark those orders.
Elaine: You think so?
Vane: We're dead in the water otherwise.
Elaine: All right. I'll kill him.
Accomplice: Your brains are baked! I won't take no part of killing the Commodore! Not one of the King's men!
Vane: We can't risk our good fortune. Go on, I'll be waiting for you.
Soldier 1: Sir! We have information for the Commodore. An urgent matter.
Guard: Carry on.
Soldier 2: Lots of sour blood between them two, Rogers and Chamberlaine. What's the issue?
Soldier 1: The Commodore don't think much of civilians, I reckon. And there's a rumour going round that Rogers is some kind of Jacobite. Or worse, that he's a Catholic.
Soldier 2: O, I could think of worse!
Soldier 1: Gather those two men there!
You lads! Follow and lay aboard. The Commodore has a job for you.
Soldier 3: Aye, sir! I heard the Commodore ranting and raving about Woodes Rogers, calling him a heathen and whatnot. What's happened to set them two off?
Soldier 4: Hush, man! You don't want the governor's ire brought down on you. He's a mysterious sort.
Soldier 3: Well, I'm much more afraid of the Commodore, in truth. He's a serious chap. No sense of humour.
Soldier 1: Take positions and prepare to decamp on the Commodore's orders!
Soldier 3: Aye, sir!
Chamberlaine: Remember our object, lads. We're here to punch holes in every goddamned pirate ship anchored in the northern harbor! If you doubt the honour of our cause here... and if my disavowal of our coward Governor's wishes causes you anxiety, then you are free to debark my vessel and stay ashore! But I will not stand idle by as the rats scurrying about this island plot and scheme to do us direct harm! So tumble up there, men! Tumble up all! Prepare to loose the topsails! That's right! Lay aloft, quick as you please! Ready to loose the topsails on my signal. All ready forward? Wait for my signal, please!
Elaine: The Governor's given us a pardon, Commodore. Don't a man's word mean anything in these times?
Chamberlaine: Has syphilis clouded your mind? Why scratch and claw to protect such squalor? You're parasites, feeding off the industry of honest men!
Elaine: Much like King George in that respect.
Chamberlaine: Know your place, peasant! You may have taken my life, but you have not improved your own by any measure!
Elaine: Does some purpose keep you talking?
Chamberlaine: If not for that heathen, Governor Rogers, I'd have seen you hanged from your own crosstrees, worm! All of you!
Kevin: He had it coming, Elaine. He was just too proud to see it, that's all.
