News

Gibbs walked through the cemetery with the insulated bags of food he'd picked up from the diner. He could see Tony and Kelly where they were seated on a pile of blankets next to Shannon's grave.

"Mornin'," he greeted as he arrived.

Tony jumped up to help with the bags. "Hey, Boss."

Kelly grinned at him, getting up and giving him a hug. "Morning, Dad."

He returned the hug fiercely, then stepped back. "Picnic in February?"

She just smiled at him. "It's pretty warm for February."

They all sat, Gibbs sipping his coffee as he watched Tony distribute food. "How's your arm?"

Tony looked at him. "Totally fine! The guy barely winged me. If it were possible to wing the wing, he'd have done it. Ducky said all it needed was a little peroxide now and then."

Gibbs nodded, watching as Kelly reached out to take Tony's hand and squeeze it. "I'm glad you're okay," she murmured. Gibbs' eyes narrowed as he noticed the sheen of tears in her eyes.

Tony smiled at her, pausing in his task to cup a hand to her cheek. "I'm being extra careful… especially now." The smile broadened into a grin before he turned his attention back to the food.

Gibbs' eyebrows rose as Tony passed the 'farmer's special' to Kelly instead of keeping it for himself. He sipped his coffee, observing as Kelly enthusiastically dug into the stack of pancakes, sausages, bacon, and homefries, then shrugged mentally as Tony went after the first of two bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. Gibbs took the cover off his own scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast.

"How's work?" he asked Kelly.

She grinned at him. "Fantastic. Mrs. Carlson actually requested I become Skippy's primary vet yesterday."

Gibbs smiled. "Skippy's the spaniel thing, right?"

Kelly snorted. "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel thing, yeah."

Tony waved his sandwich in the air. "She's the nutbar who insisted on paying for an extra appointment slot to interview you and Doc Hodges before she'd let you see the dog?"

Kelly nodded. "She's just a bit protective of her little boy." She took another big bite of pancakes, chewed, swallowed, and then continued. "That breed has a lot of heart problems. Those dogs are super sweet, though."

"Doc mind the switch?" Gibbs asked, sipping more coffee.

"Nope. He just grinned and announced that I've truly arrived. I just think he's thrilled he doesn't have to deal with her phone calls anymore. Skippy so much as sneezes and she's calling for help. But I don't mind. She just loves her dog." She took another big bite of food. "I am so hungry… I should have asked for two of these."

Gibbs' jaw stopped moving mid-chew. He'd flashed back to breakfast out with Shannon, at a diner much like Elaine's. Shannon had eaten a large meal, complained of still being hungry, and ordered another plate. She'd then told him she was pregnant.

He resumed chewing and watched his daughter carefully. He couldn't see anything different about her physically, but she was wearing several layers. He then shifted attention to his son-in-law; Tony was eating happily, glancing at his wife every few seconds and grinning at the fast-disappearing food on her plate. Gibbs hid a smile behind his coffee and made a bet with himself. Then he waited.

Tony cleaned up after most of the food was gone. Kelly leaned against him after he sat back down, picking fruit out of another container. She held it out to Gibbs with a questioning expression. He shook his head, raising his second coffee cup. She smiled and held it up to Tony, who took a strawberry and popped it into his mouth. Kelly looked up at him, smiling, then put down the container and reached over to lay one hand on Shannon's gravestone. "We have some news for you," she said softly, smiling.

"Yeah?"

Tony nodded, grinning.

Kelly dropped her hand to her lower abdomen. "Yeah. And we wanted to tell you here, with Mom."

Gibbs was surprised by his eyes filling with tears. "When?" His voice was abnormally husky.

"Due in early July," she said quietly. "We could have told you before, but I wanted it to be here, and it's been a little cold…"

He sat there staring at her, then got to his feet. Kelly stood at the same time and moved into his arms.

Tony sat there, smiling, until she reached for him; he got up and took her hand. Both his wife and his father-in-law pulled him into the hug.

A few minutes later they'd sat down again, with Kelly snuggling into Tony's side for warmth. "By the time we knew for sure, it was too late in the year to tell you while sailing on the Shannon," she explained. "And if we couldn't do it there, I wanted it to be here."

Gibbs nodded. "Maybe you could time the next one better," he teased.

Tony stared at him. "Let's make sure I can survive this one before we start talking about another!" he protested.

Gibbs simply smirked at him. "So," he said to Kelly, "what am I building?"

"A crib?"

He smiled. "I built yours. It's in the attic, if you want it. Or I'll build you a new one."

Kelly gave him a brilliant smile. "You have mine? I'd love that."

"How about a swing set?" Tony asked. "I always wanted one of those."

"Kid won't be able to use it for a while," Gibbs pointed out.

"But a swing set would get a lot more use over the years," Kelly responded, her voice hopeful.

Gibbs smiled. "I'll start the plans tonight."

Decision

Leon Vance looked up as Gibbs knocked on the open office door while striding in, coffee cup in hand. "Gibbs."

"Mornin', Leon."

Vance's eyebrows rose at the informal greeting. "Something on your mind?"

Gibbs nodded.

Vance rose to his feet and gestured toward the door. Gibbs turned to close it, and they both headed for the comfortable seating against the far wall. Once they were settled, Vance asked, "Everything okay with your team?"

Gibbs' lips quirked up in a small smile. "Team's fine."

Vance nodded. "Kelly?"

A hint of exasperation showed on Gibbs' face. "Still doing the occasional farm call."

"Really? Isn't she over six months now?"

Gibbs sighed and nodded, the exasperation mixing with pride. "Takes her job seriously."

Vance shook his head. "I'm surprised neither you nor DiNozzo has had a heart attack yet." He chuckled suddenly. "Never could get Jackie to slow down. She was reorganizing the house and climbing on step ladders the day before Kayla was born."

"I can see that," Gibbs commented lightly, before taking a sip of coffee.

Vance waited for a few seconds, but Gibbs didn't say anything, just reached up to rub the back of his head and looked toward the windows behind Vance's desk.

"Gibbs?"

Gibbs sighed, then looked directly at Vance. "Time for me to retire, Leon."

Vance's jaw dropped, and he stared at Gibbs. "Always thought it would take a direct order from SecNav to get you out of here."

"Thought so too, until recently." Gibbs sat back, relaxing in a way Vance had rarely seen. "I'm going to be a grandfather," he said quietly. "Missed too much when Kelly was a kid. I want to be there… for as much as she and Tony will let me."

Vance nodded, thinking. "When?" he asked, keeping it simple.

"End of June. Kelly's due early July." Gibbs' eyes narrowed slightly. "Tony's ready to lead the team." He spoke firmly, just short of a challenge.

Vance nodded. "No question. He's been your unofficial successor for years. You'll get him up to speed?"

Gibbs nodded. "He's ready. Been stepping back even more over the past few months, letting him lead. He's been with me in MTAC on all the ops in the past year. Doin' a great job. Figure between now and my leaving he can start attending team meetings in my place."

"He knows?"

Gibbs nodded. "Spoke with him and Kelly over the weekend. He's got mixed feelings, but he's more worried about impending fatherhood than about being team lead." Gibbs smiled. "Says at least he knows he can lead the team."

Vance grinned. "I remember those days. First time I changed a diaper, Jackie couldn't stop laughing." He shook his head, then looked at Gibbs seriously. "You want to lead the team while DiNozzo's on paternity leave?"

Gibbs shook his head. "Unless the kid comes early, no. Figure I'll be more useful giving the new parents a break. Tim and Ziva can work cold cases or get farmed out to other teams until Tony's leave is up."

"Or take vacation time," Vance pointed out. "They have plenty on the books." He sat forward. "They ready for this?"

"If they haven't seen this coming, they shouldn't be on my team. They're investigators, Leon."

Vance mock glared at him, but accepted the point. "You'll help DiNozzo pick a fourth?"

Gibbs nodded. "If he wants my input."

Vance sighed. "Then I think we're good." They both stood, and Vance smiled as he reached out to shake Gibbs' hand. "Not sure what this job's gonna be like without you keeping me in line, Gibbs."

Gibbs smiled at him. "You'll manage. I'll tell Tony to barge into your office at least once a week."

Vance lifted an eyebrow. "Not sure that's his style." He smiled. "You've earned this, Gibbs."

Gibbs saluted him with his coffee. "Thanks, Leon." He turned and made his way to the door.

"Bring the kid around to say hi," Vance called out. "If nothing else, everyone's shock at seeing you with a baby will be entertaining."

Gibbs laughed and headed out the door.

Addition

Gibbs sat up straight and motionless, staring ahead at the blank wall. The only sign of the tension he was feeling were his hands clenched together in his lap.

Abby sat next to him, one hand on his forearm, squeezing gently while she talked to Jimmy, who was describing aspects of Victoria's birth. Tim, Delilah, Ziva, and Ducky were in the opposite row of seats, talking earnestly about baby gifts.

Gibbs had tuned everyone out long ago. His gaze shifted from the wall to the door and back, the pattern broken occasionally by glances at his watch. It was going on seven hours since he'd arrived at the hospital in time to see Kelly ride the wave of a contraction before she grinned up at him and called him Gramps. Tony's face had been a mix of excitement and panic as he followed Kelly and the nurse past the 'Authorized Persons Only Beyond This Point' door.

Gibbs unclenched his hands and reached up to run one through his hair, noting absently that he was overdue for a haircut. He'd been spending time with Kelly at home after his official retirement and hadn't bothered to get it done; he vaguely remembered her praising his 'new look.' He smiled softly at the memory; she'd been bugging him about his hair for years, but he hadn't given in.

Something blocked his view of the door and he looked up to see Tim standing there, holding out a coffee; the logo was from his favorite shop near the hospital. Gibbs reached for it, smiling at Tim. "Thanks," he said, a little sheepishly, since he hadn't noticed Tim leaving.

Tim grinned at him. "You're going to be a great grandpa, you know."

Gibbs huffed out a breath. "Let's get that kid born before we make any predictions," he cautioned.

Ducky looked over at him and smiled. "I'm sure everything is fine, Jethro. Kelly is healthy; her obstetrician had no concerns."

"Do you think it's a boy or a girl, Ducky?" Abby asked.

Ducky stared at her. "My dear girl, what on earth makes you think I would be able to tell? Besides, Anthony and Kelly want the surprise, so even if I could tell, I wouldn't say anything."

"It's not like they're here in the room," Abby said. She pouted slightly. "I wish they'd at least shared the names they chose."

The conversation turned to name speculation; Gibbs focused his attention on the door… which burst open just a few minutes later.

Tony stood there, wide-eyed, staring at them all. His eyes met Gibbs', who had jumped to his feet; they all had.

"I'm a dad," Tony blurted out.

Cheers erupted in the waiting room. Gibbs simply stared at his son-in-law, waiting.

Tony's expression softened. "Sammie and the baby are doing great."

Gibbs exhaled and half-collapsed into his chair.

Tony grinned, then blinked as he realized his friends were peppering him with questions. He held up a hand. "Sammie says we've gotta do some sort of skin on skin thing, so I'll come get you later." He turned to leave.

"Tony!" Abby was outraged. "Boy or girl?!"

Tony pivoted back to face them, his eyes seeking Gibbs' again. "Boy," he grinned. Then he was gone.

Gibbs ignored the babbling voices. He closed his eyes, thanking whatever powers he could think of that his daughter and grandson were safe. For just a moment, he thought he could feel Shannon's presence in the empty chair next to him.

Jimmy and Abby made a run for take-out when the nurse told them it would be a while yet before they could join the new parents. Gibbs ate mechanically, oblivious to the glances everyone kept throwing his way.

Some time later, Tony came through the door, smiling broadly. "Come on back, everyone."

They all hung back, letting Gibbs follow behind Tony, crowding after him and speaking in excited whispers. Tony led them to a room where Kelly sat up in bed, holding her newborn son swaddled in a soft blanket.

Kelly beamed up at her father, tilting the sleeping baby just enough for Gibbs to get a good look at his face. "Say hi to your grandson, Dad… Jason William DiNozzo."

Gibbs sat down on the bed, leaning in to place a kiss on Kelly's forehead before he really looked at the baby, his eyebrows rising at the shock of dark hair. He glanced at Tony, who grinned at him. "DiNozzo genes," Tony stated proudly. "I looked just like that."

Gibbs smiled at him, then looked at Kelly.

"We chose Jason to keep the tradition going… Jackson, Jethro, Jason." She looked down at her son. "William for Pop." She cradled Jason firmly in her arm, then reached for Gibbs' hand, gripping firmly. "You don't mind the last name, do you?"

Gibbs grinned at her and shook his head. "Of course not. Tony's son deserves his name."

Kelly squeezed his hand, then let go and looked back down at Jason while Tony fielded questions from the crowd. Gibbs watched his daughter watch her baby, then looked at Jason, seeing the resemblance to both Tony and Kelly. Look at Kelly's life, Shan, he thought. You'd be so proud.

Work

Tony drummed his fingers on the arm of the chair, looking from one team member to the other. "Our campfires usually get us further than this," he mused.

Tim and Ziva exchanged glances, while Ellie Bishop, the team's probie, bit her lip. "Sorry, Boss," she said.

Tony shook his head. "No worries, Bish. I'm calling in the big guns."

Tim straightened up. "You mean…"

Grinning, Tony flung out his arm in a grand gesture that almost hit Ziva in the face, earning him a glare. "Boss-man's a comin'," he stated.

Ziva's glare turned into a smile. "It will be good to have him here. I have not seen him since your son was born."

"He's been amazing," Tony said, smiling. "Kept us from going crazy after we got Jace home. And now that Sammie's back at work, free child care!"

Tim rolled his eyes. "Well, you can forget that now that you've called him in. Vance will deduct the consultation fee from the team budget… and who's going to babysit?"

Tony shot Tim a triumphant smirk. "No one." He pointed toward the elevator just before it dinged and the doors slid open. They all stood, and several jaws dropped as Gibbs stepped off the elevator with a large bag slung over his shoulder and Jason cradled in his arms.

Gibbs shot Tony a grin as he came around the corner of Ziva's desk. He handed Jason off to his father and set the bag down on the floor in front of Tony's desk. Ziva moved forward to give him a quick hug, and Tim shook his hand. Gibbs raised an eyebrow at Ellie, who smiled and stepped up for a handshake and a quick question and answer session on how she was doing.

Several people from all over the floor drifted closer, wanting to see both Gibbs and Tony's son. There were whispers about Gibbs' hair and the fact that he was smiling. Gibbs ignored them all.

Tony was proudly showing off his baby and letting various agents and staff exclaim over him, when he suddenly sniffed the air. "Someone needs a diaper change!"

Gibbs broke off his conversation with Ellie in mid-sentence, grabbed the bag, tossed it next to Tim's desk, where Tony was standing. He held out his hands. Tony looked at him, raised an eyebrow, then grinned and handed Jason over to his grandfather.

Gibbs held Jason expertly in one arm while he cleared space on Tim's desk with the other, laying Jason down and beginning an efficient and precise diaper change. Tim started to voice a protest, but Ziva elbowed him in the side and he shut his mouth. The entire floor was silent as they watched the legendary Leroy Jethro Gibbs in action.

Once Gibbs was done, having handed off the dirty diaper to a green-faced Tim for him to dispose of, he looked up at the watching crowd. Keeping one hand on Jason, he rested the other on his hip. "What?!"

The crowd dispersed.

Tony managed not to laugh. Ziva smirked at Ellie, who grinned back at her. Gibbs fished a bottle out of the insulated portion of the bag, tested the temperature of the milk, then hoisted Jason into his arms and began feeding him. Tim returned from a vigorous hand-washing, and Gibbs surveyed the team. "So, you gonna read me in on this or what?"

Tony laughed, delighted, and called on Ellie to start them off.
