Everything was a mess. Wells could think of no other word to describe his current situation. The moment the explosions began around the settlement Wells knew that could only mean one thing. Raven was here. And if Raven was here, it meant so was Skaikru and if they were here it meant Clarke had done it. She had made it to Polis and gotten the commander to help their clan.
His overwhelming joy turn to ashes in his mouth as he also realised what that meant. If Clarke brought the arm of the eleven clans then that means somewhere out there in all the chaos and fighting is his sister. The Floukru army made haste to help join in the fight. They weren't going to stay inside and hide while everyone else fought their war for them. The people of the ocean clan would see this war to the bitter end. Even if they hated war, it was theirs to end. Not the other clans.
Desperate to find his sister he doesn't just dive into the fray. He stops and scans the battlefield. Multiple small battles are taking place between different fractions. He comes to the conclusion it will be impossible to pick her out in all of this chaos. As much as he hates it he might just have to wait till the battle is over before he can find her. All he can really do right now is pray she is alright and make sure to help stop more of his people from dying in this pointless war.
However, before he can move forward Storm arrives at his hide barking at him before running off in one direction. Taking off after the wolf he runs off into the battle. If Storm wants to take him somewhere you can be damn sure he is going to follow her. You know when he was a kid back on the ark he never would have thought that he would end up on the ground chasing after a wolf through a warzone. Young him would have been so confused if he knew where his life was heading.
Fire blazed all around him and he tried to block out the sounds of people screaming. Death surrounded him yet he was able to swiftly make it through the ranks coming into a clearing just in time to witness the one thing he hoped never to see.
In front of him, Clarke stood with an arrow in her chest. She didn't look in pain or scared. She looked more confused. Storm who had halted in her own charge at seeing Clarke being hit howled before sprinting off in one direction. Wells stood frozen and could only watch in horror as a second arrow glided through the air smacking into her followed by a third. By the time Clarke had hit the ground, Wells had somehow managed to gain control of his body again. Racing towards her he beats Anya who rides up next to him. He wasn't aware he was screaming at her all he was aware of was his sister lying in the mud blood pouring out of her.
Trying to suppress his panic he recalls everything Clarke had taught him about injuries. Put pressure on the wounds. Don't pull them out. He debates whether he should try cauterising the wounds but if she's bleeding internally then he could make it worse and not realise. He needs to find a healer. Adria was Clarke's second, but he has no idea if she's ready to handle these type of wounds on her own.
Thankfully Anya chose this moment to interject into his rapid panic. "Her mother is at the healer's tent." If anyone can save her it will be Abbey. Nodding he carefully picks Clarke up and hands her to the mounted Anya. As much as he doesn't want to leave his sister he knows that Anya can get her to Abbey faster then he could. He watches as Anya turns her horse around and gallops away. He prays to every god that will listen to protect his sister. He can't lose. Not now. Not ever.
Storm reappears at his side coat smothered in blood holding a bow in her mouth. Well, at least he knows the person who did this is dead. Stroking her head he quickly scans the battlefield. Most of the fighting has come to an end.
Finding the tent in which Clarke was currently undergoing surgery wasn't difficult. The medical tent was the only one put up. And if that wasn't enough the pacing Anya outside of the tent would have been a major giveaway. On the way over he had spotted Rora talking to two members of Trikru before shouting her over and informing her of what happened to Clarke. Rora took the news as best as she could considering one of her closest friends had been seriously injured. But she promised she would find Luna right away and tell her. Wells had wanted to tell her himself, but he couldn't bare being away from Clarke. He needed to be by her side. He couldn't waste time looking for Luna.
"How is she," Wells asks the moment he gets close enough to Anya.
The General pauses in her pacing her hands clenched at her side. "I don't know." She admits through gritted teeth. "Abbi won't tell me anything and kicked me out the moment I put Clarke down." He's not surprised at this. Once Abbey is in doctor mood there is nothing that will get in her way. The need to save her own daughter pushing her to be better.
A part of him wishes to storm inside the tent and demand to know what's happening. But he knows he can't. Abbey can't have anyone distracting her now. Not when Clarke's life is on the line. He won't let anyone, but medical staff enter. He will guard his sister from all harm.
As if having the same thought Storm appears on his left sitting down next to him while Anubis shows up on his right. Both wolves' eyes watching out for any threats. Feeling a swell of love towards Clarke's and Luna's companions he strokes both of them telling them how good they are and how proud he is of them. He earns a happy bark in response.
It isn't long till Bellamy Octavia Raven Monty Harper Miller and a few other members of the hundred to appear asking how Clarke is. He tells them nothing yet and they all take a seat on the ground. At least they are showing some care and loyalty towards Clarke. His own feelings regarding the hundred are mixed. He does care for them. After everything they all went through together, they are bonded. But he can't ever forgive the way they turned on Clarke inside the mountain. Maybe if they had just listened to her then none of this would have happened. Clarke never would have spiralled. And as much as he loves being in Floukru and loves having Luna as his sister. He would rather have Clarke not having to live with the genocide she committed.
In a different world, the mountain men would have surrendered when Clarke issued the threat of genocide she wouldn't have that on her shoulders. Maybe she would still feel the need to leave. The aftermath of the weight put upon her to fight two wars and build alliances while trying to keep everyone alive when most people don't respect her enough to follow her as their leader. He and Clarke would have snuck away from the camp wanting to be free of all responsibilities. Their alliance with the commander would have meant they were free to roam the lands of the twelve clans. Together they would have explored the vast continent they landed on before ending up at Floukru. Where Clarke would do some stupid and nearly get herself killed. Probably try cliff diving on a different cliff and mess it up and Luna would have saved her. Just like in real life. From there he and Clarke would follow Luna back to her town and experience their culture falling in love with the people of the boat clan. Luna and Clarke would have fallen in love without the baggage that nearly ripped them apart. Their wedding would have been the same only this time Skaikru would be there. Clarke's mother and his father would show up and express how happy they are for her.
In a perfect world, everyone the two of them cared about would have been there. Jake, his mother, Eliza, Alex Riley, and Callie.
But this isn't a perfect world. It's fucked up and messy but still filled with so much light. What was it Luna had told him. There cannot be light without darkness and darkness without light. You need both to survive. Well, he is. His village is now safe from their impending doom. But his sister is in life-threatening surgery. Light and dark. Good and bad. For once can't the world just give them a break and allow them to have the good without the bad. It can happily give them the bad with the bad why not mix it up and do double good.
Someone coming out of the tent draws everyone's attention. It's clearly a member of Skaikru but not someone he recognises. Then again, he didn't really know the medical staff on the ark well apart from Clarke and Abbey. "How is she." Wells immediately asks dying to know what his sister's situation is. Maybe dying wasn't the correct word to use there.
The doctor looks at Wells and the gathered group. His eyes shifted uneasily over Anya. Bloody Sky people and their inability to play nice with others. "Considering she was shot with three arrows the wounds themselves aren't all life-threatening on their own. However, because of her being shoot three times she's lost a lot of blood. And we simply don't have enough blood to keep her alive."
The doctor's words slam into Wells like a truck. His sister will live if they find more blood. All they need to do is find the right blood type. He looks towards members of the hundred. Surely one of them has the same blood type. He would do it himself but Clarke's is O negative. Meaning she can only receive blood from someone that is also O-negative. Yet her blood can be given to anyone else. It's just so in her character for that to be the case. She can give to anyone but only people like her can give back.
Octavia volunteers first. "If it's blood you need then take mine." Everyone else is quick to offer as well. He ignores the look Octavia gives him when she notices he hasn't offered her his.
The doctor sighs. As nice as it is for everyone to offer if they don't have the same blood type it means nothing. Giving her the wrong blood will kill her. She has a better chance of recovering from blood loss then she does from having the wrong blood. Or at least that's what he gathered from when Abbey give him Eliza and Alex the speech back on the ark. "It's not that simple."
"What do you mean." Raven snaps. "You need blood we have blood."
"Yes, but how many of you know what your blood type actually is." The doctor replies in a calm manner. All members of the hundred look between each other. "If we give her the wrong blood then she will die. We need someone with O-negative blood. Do any of you know for absolute certainty that you are O negative."
There is a silence among the gathered young adults. No one for certain. Everyone looks from one to the other begging that someone will say yes. But none of them step forward.
The doctor shakes his head. Wells thinks about getting the hundred to start running the battlefield. There are other members of Skaikru here. All guards know their blood type. Maybe one of them is a match. Someone here has to be. It's just a case of finding them beforeā¦
"I'm a match." A voice calls out coming up behind him. A voice Wells knows so well. His head snaps in the direction, his eyes not believing who just appeared answering all of his prays. "I can donate blood. It's only fair that I give her back the blood she used to save lives back when we were fourteen. That's why you have a twin after all." Riley jokes as the hundred move out of his way. Like Moses parting the red sea everyone moves to one side to allow him to pass. The doctor practically grabs him and hauls him into the tent. As Riley moves past him he shoots Wells a wink.
As the tent shuts behind him all Wells can utter is. "He's alive."
Alex was frantically pacing up and down the corridor while Wells was rooted to his seat. Eliza was rambling to herself saying that everything was going to be ok. The three fourteen year olds were to put it lightly a terrified anxious mess as they waited for news.
"How could we not have realised something was wrong." Alex mutters angrily under her breath.
"How could we have known." Wells tries to argue knowing that they had no way of knowing but that still doesn't remove the guilt and worry in himself never mind the others.
Alex stops to glare at him. "We are his friend's we should have known something was wrong. He was in pain and feeling ill and none of us noticed." She's right and now Riley is in surgery because they didn't see the warning signs.
Alex goes back to pacing. Wells reaches over to take hold of Eliza's hand before she picked the skin clean away on her nails. They all know that Abbey and Clarke will do everything in their power in order to save Riley's life. A burst appendix is life threatening if it's not caught in time. So the three friends remain outside of the surgery room waiting to see the fate of their friend.
Death is still a strange concept to them. Being Fourteen, they understand it well enough. They know what happens to people who commit crimes over the age of eighteen. They know that sometimes work accidents take place. That illness and infection on the ark has to be very carefully monitored or people will die. Wells's own mother caught one of the airborne illnesses that swept through the ark when he was elven. Hundred of people died as the medical staff here weren't able to keep up with the vast amount of serious cases and even if they did they didn't have the supplies to save everyone. So yes, the teens are understanding and have experienced death.
But to them this is different. Most people who die are adults. They were ignorant and naive in this false belief that because they weren't over eighteen meant they couldn't possibly be at risk of dying from something like this. Being killed yes but not for natural reasons like this. So, when Riley's started roaring out in pain as he collapsed to the floor, they knew something was horribly wrong.
And they were right.
They had been out here for nearly two hours by now. Their parents had come to take the home, but they refused to leave Riley's side. Refused to leave Clarke's who right now is fighting to keep her twin alive. If the two of them were here fighting a war, then you can bet the three of them won't be leaving anytime soon. They support one another. It's all in the blood pact they made.
More time passes over them feeling like a year before Abbey comes to talk to them. At the sight of her, all three of them jump up practically running over to meet her. "He's alright." The head of medical tells them with a tired smile. "We caught it in time and were able to repair the damage." She doesn't go into details knowing that the three of them don't care other then the fact that Riley is alight.
Abbey allows them to see him before she sends them all home. Walking into the medical centre Wells is the first to notice Clarke also passed out on one of the beds. "What's wrong with Clarke." He asks turning to abbey wondering if she's also injured.
"Riley's lost a lot of blood. And blood is limited on the ark." Wells nods at hearing this. The lack of resources has made medical supplies difficult to produce. He knows that there are limits to every surgery. If someone needs more then they are left to die. It's a waste of resources according to the council. Personally, Wells thinks it's a stupid law, but the law is the law. "We needed more then the limit and Clarke offered the use of her own blood in order to give Riley the extra he needs to survive."
Given from the way Clarke is passed out Wells can assume that Clarke gave a lot of blood to help protect her friend. Wells smirks to himself already knowing this is something that Clarke will forever hold over Riley in order to get favours or her way.
That thought makes all the dead weight drop from his shoulders as it sets in. Riley and Clarke are both ok. And for the first-time sin hours, Wells lets out a genuine smile in relief.
After watching Riley head into the medical tent, the howling of wolves is echoed through the woods. two from close but one from further away coming closer. He and Anya look towards each other nodding as they know what is coming. A second later a panicked Luna rushes out of the forests. She freezes at the sight of everyone gathered before eyes narrow on Wells and she sprints towards him asking him what happened. The pure frantic fear in his voice is painful to hear coming from his normally composed and calm leader.
He wonders what she was told. Who told and how. He prays it was one of their people who would understand the relationship between Luna and Clarke. If it was it someone from another clan then they might not have cared on how to tell her leaving her with more questions, then answers as her own terror set in. It's why he asked Rora to find Luna. He really hopes it was her to tell Luna what had happened. It's no secret that Luna's weakness is Clarke.
Wells gently pulls Luna into his arms ignoring the way Lincoln and the rest of Skaikru are looking at him. His eyes flicker over to Anya who nods. She then moves to usher everyone back and away from the two of them giving them so space. He ignores the sounds of his old clan's protests trusting Anya to deal with them.
Wells wants to assure Luna that Clarke will be fine. That everything will be alright. But he can't seem to find the words to do this. Instead, he pulls her tighter into him as she weeps into his shoulder. The three wolves around them whimpering towards the medical tent.
Clarke is strong. She will survive this. She has too. He can't lose her too.
